JOHN FORBES WINS NORTH ALLIANCE AT STORMY BRORA

By ROBIN WILSON
Stormy weather welcomed the 44 members of the North Golf Alliance who began the second half of their season at Brora where conditions were so bad for the early local members teeing off at 8.30am that  they all returned to the clubhouse after just four holes.
Conditions got a little better when the morning sun made sporadic appearances between the squally showers rose and out of the original entry 23 returned cards.
Muir of Ord's +1 handicap John Forbes (pictured) made his début in the North Alliance at the Tain fixture last November, taking a second place, and on his second appearance at Brora he carded two halves of 37 for a very worthy 74 and first place.
Forbes' birdie 2 at the 13th hole repaired some the damage of his double bogey 6 at the first inward hole played into the stiff wind, and with the help of the wind at the par five 8th hole he also made a birdie on the outward half.
Only three players broke 80, the others being second placed Billy Ferries (Tain) with the help of a miraculous inward 36 for gross 77, and local member Robert MacDonald whose halves of 40-38 reduced to a nett of 72  to win the Class 1 section from John Hunter (Wick) nett 75, off 6.
The Durness experience of the conditions was again beneficial to their members and the top two in Class 2 were Donnie Hossack, using all of his 16 handicap allowance to record a nett 74, and, with the same nett score club mate Davie Ross, off 14, who dropped back to second place on the count back.
Tain's Ali Melville broke a 1-2-3 Durness finish when he claimed  third place and into fourth position came Ali Morrison from Durness, the apprentice greenkeeper at Brora.
On Sunday the twice postponed Reay fixture will hopefully be played, and followed the next weekend by Invergordon.

DAVID DRYSDALE JUST OUTSIDE TOP TEN AT HALFWAY IN JOBURG OPEN

REPORT FROM EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
By MICHAEL GIBBONS

Trevor Fisher junior posted a superb round of 62 on the second day of the Joburg Open to share the lead with his compatriot Richard Sterne at the midway stage of the €1.3million event.

The South African’s nine under par round  - "I was patient ... I walked slowly and did everything slowly" - was just one shot outside Charl Schwartzel’s West Course record at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club, and moved him to 15 under par after an impressive opening effort of 66 on the more challenging East Course.

Fisher’s day got off to the perfect start with an eagle on the par five second  hole, and seven birdies followed – with three of them coming in succession from the 15th hole – in a flawless display in Johannesburg, South African’s largest city by population.

The seven-time Sunshine Tour champion: “The last three or four years have been good for me on the Sunshine Tour, but I need to get to the next level now. It’s been good for me in terms of the stepping stones I’ve taken in the last ten years. But I’ve stepped on a lot of stones, so I need to get to the top now.

“I think it’s a case of maturity. I’m a late bloomer unfortunately – I’ve played better as I’ve got older. Last year was good for me. I finished fourth on the Sunshine Tour Order of Merit, which was my best performance. I’ve given myself chances before this, but I’m not putting any pressure on myself.”

In-form Sterne, second in Dubai last week, is yet to drop a shot, having added a flawless 65 to his opening round of 63 to join Fisher Junior on 15 under par.

He said: “I did the right things and putted well. It’s nice to not be behind going into the weekend. But it won’t be easy over the weekend. The players that are five or six back can catch us, so it’s a long way from over.”

Both players, whose 36-hole total is the lowest in the history of the Joburg Open, currently lead by three shots from George Coetzee, while another South African, Schwartzel, is in a group five strokes off the pace.

Coetzee’s quest for a debut European Tour victory has included 21 top ten finishes, but he is in contention to break his duck after signing for a round of 64 on the East Course.

Two-time Joburg Open Champion Schwartzel also moved firmly into contention with a six under par round of 65 on the West Course. The World Number 18 is playing his first tournament of 2013, having signed off 2012 with back-to-back victories by a combined margin of 23 shots.

“I’ve had five and a half weeks' nothing, then I started practising a bit,” Schwartzel said of his seven-week absence. “My ball striking is good enough, I’m not putting as well as I was. Those short putts are the ones you have to make to win tournaments.”

  SCOTSWATCH
David Drysdale has strung two good rounds together - 68 and 67 - for a nine-under-par tally of 135 but so high is the standard of scoring that does not even get him into the top 10 at halfway.
But joint 11th is a good platform for a surge over the weekend rounds for the Scot.
Players had to shoot five-under-par 139 or better to make sure of surviving the cut
Only three Scots in all made it - Drysdale, George Murray and Scott Henry. Murray had a splendid second-round 66 for 137 while Henry
went through on 139 with rounds of 69 and 70.
Marc Warren was on four-under 140 but failed by one shot to beat the cut.
Craig Lee shot a 68 for three-under 141 - another non-qualifier.
Calum Macaulay missed the cut despite a two-under 142 tally while Peter Whiteford, also under par on 143, was another Scot who will be idle this weekend.

TREVOR FISHER JUN SETS JOBURG OPEN CLUBHOUSE TARGET

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Trevor Fisher Junior carded a scintillating second round 62 to set the clubhouse target midway through the second day of the Joburg Open.
The South African’s nine under par effort was just one shy of Charl Schwartzel’s West Course record at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington, and took him to 15 under after an impressive 66 on the more challenging East Course yesterday.

Fisher Junior made an ideal start to his round with an eagle at the long second, and seven birdies followed in a bogey-free effort - three of them coming in a brilliant run from the 15th.

The Sunshine Tour regular started his hattrick with a five footer, left his tee shot within six feet at the short 16th then, after missing the fairway, conjured a fine approach to two feet at the penultimate hole.

That left the 33 year old, who finished tied third in this event last year, five clear of compatriot Schwartzel.

A two-time winner here, the former Masters Tournament champion moved into contention with a six under 65 on the West Course.

The World Number 18 is playing his first tournament of 2013 after finishing 2012 with back-to-back victories by a combined margin of 23 shots.

“I’ve had five and a half weeks nothing, then i started practising a bit,” Schwartzel said of his seven-week absence.
“I took notes of what I was thinking of when I stopped to keep the same thought processes. My ball striking is good enough; I’m not putting as well - those short ones are the ones you have to make to win tournaments.”

On Fisher Junior’s remarkable halfway total he added: “We played foursomes for South Africa Under-23s - I know how good he can be.”

Overnight joint-leader Richard Sterne was two under through six holes on the East Course to join Schwartzel on ten under, while the player who joined him in front on day one - German Maximilian Kieffer - carded a level par 72.
Sterne, second last week in Dubai, picked up further shots at the seventh and ninth and by turning in a four under 33 reduced Fisher Junior’s advantage to three.
George Coetzee’s wait for a first European Tour victory has taken in 21 top-ten finishes, but he gave himself another title shot with five six birdies in his first ten holes over the East Course, the last coming after a magnificent approach to three feet.
He was alongside Schwartzel on ten under as a result, while Sterne narrowed the deficit to two with an approach to five feet at the 15th for another birdie

TANI WINS ONEASIA Q SCHOOL IN MALAYSIA

NEWS RELEASE FROM THE ONEASIA TOUR
KOTA KINABALU, Malaysia - Japan's Akinori Tani held his nerve with a final-round even-par 71 today to win OneAsia's Q-School at Sutera Harbour Golf & Country Club and book his place into all the tour's million-dollar tournaments for 2013.

Tani, who led from the second round, finished the tournament at seven under -- two strokes ahead of hard-charging Canadian Richard Lee, who shot a tournament-best 63 to finish runner-up.

Koreans Park Il-hwan (68) and Won Doo-kyun (73) shared third, a shot further back.

Nearly 200 players from around the world signed up for Q-School this year. Ten spots went to the top finishers at last week's qualifier at Industry Hills Golf Club in Los Angeles, California, and 14 to Sutera Harbour.

The winners of both legs of Q-School are guaranteed starts at all OneAsia's tournaments in 2013, while those who finish second and third will likely start most events. Positions are then accorded proportionally between the Malaysian and U.S. Q-Schools.

Tani lost his card after finishing 79th on the Japan Golf Tour Organisation's (JGTO) Order of Merit last year and was looking for a new tour to supplement the exemptions he will get at home.

"I am really pleased to get onto OneAsia," he said. "I was a bit nervous in the last round, but I got the job done. I'm now looking forward to playing all the events -- particularly the first two."

Tani was referring to the Thailand Open (March 14 -17) and Indonesian PGA Championship (March 28 - 31),  which will be sanctioned by both OneAsia and the JGTO as part of a burgeoning partnership between the tours. Earnings from the two events count towards both Orders of Merit.

At 38 Tani was one of the most experienced players in the field -- evidenced by him recruiting professional Malaysian caddy Mazlan Bulan to carry his bag while much of the field made do with part-timers.

Bulan, who has worked in the past for countryman Danny Chia and Chinese ace Zhang Lianwei, proved invaluable around around the tricky 6,440-metre (6,867-yard) seaside course.

"He really know the greens so I just took his advice," said Tani. "This is a really important tournament, so I wanted to do my best."

Runner-up Lee will be spoilt for choice on where to play this year having also finished second at the Asian Tour's Q-School in Thailand last month.

Canadian-born to Korean parents, Lee lost his card last season after four years on the Web.com Tour and is now considering a long-term stay in the Asia-Pacific.

"I'll talk it over with my parents," said Lee, 22, who turned pro after competing in the U.S. Open as a 17-year-old in 2007.

"On the Asian Tour you have to go step-by-step and play well to get in the big ones, but here (OneAsia) there is a lot more money and it looks a lot more competitive.

"Basically I'll try to follow the money

EUROPEAN SENIOR TOUR ANNOUNCE 2013 SCHEDULE

NEWS RELEASE FROM EUROPEAN SENIOR TOUR
The European Senior Tour today announced its schedule for the 2013 season, with the contest to succeed Roger Chapman as Order of Merit winner taking in four continents across eight months.

Following a record number of entries for the 2013 Qualifying School in January, the new season will begin with the US Senior PGA Championship presented by KitchenAid at Bellerive Country Club, St. Louis, Missouri, from May 23-26, where Chapman will defend the first of his two Senior Major Championships.

There will be a minimum of 13 tournaments counting towards the 2013 Order of Merit, including the new Russian Open Golf Championship (Senior) at Moscow Country Club, from September 13-15, which is the Senior Tour’s first visit to Russia since 2008.

There will be three events in England, with the prestigious PGA Seniors Championship moving to De Vere Mottram Hall, in Cheshire, for the first time from June 6-9; The Senior Open Championship Presented by Rolex visiting Royal Birkdale for the first time from July 25-28; and the ever-popular Travis Perkins plc Senior Masters returning to Woburn Golf Club for a 13th consecutive year from August 30 to September 1.

Germany will again host two events – both run by Langer Sport Marketing - with the Berenberg Masters returning to 2011 venue Golf- und Land-Club Köln, Refrath from August 2-4, and the second edition of the WINSTONgolf Senior Open remaining at WINSTONopen Course, in Vorbeck, from September 6-8.

Two of the Senior Tour’s longest running events continue  with the Bad Ragaz PGA Seniors Open returning to Bad Ragaz Golf Club in Switzerland for a 17th consecutive year from July 5-7, while the Scottish Hydro Senior Open celebrates its 21st edition by returning to Fairmont St Andrews for the fifth year in a row, from August 16-18.

There is a new date and venue for the Speedy Services Wales Senior Open, which will be played from June 14-16 at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club, which will then host The Senior Open Championship Presented by Rolex in 2014.

The French Riviera Masters, the final event of the season in continental Europe, remains at Terre Blanche Resort for a second consecutive year, from September 20-22, before the Senior Tour moves east for the third edition of the Fubon Senior Open, at Miramar Golf and Country Club, in Taiwan, from November 15-17.

The 22nd Senior Tour season will again conclude in Mauritius, when Constance Belle Mare Plage hosts the MCB Tour Championship, where Chapman’s successor as winner of the Order of Merit will be presented with the John Jacobs Trophy.

Andy Stubbs, Managing Director of the Senior Tour, said: “We can look forward to another strong schedule of events for 2013, with an exciting new event in Russia and the return to many of our favourite destinations for our more established events. We are also confident of adding more events to this schedule over the coming weeks.

“We are extremely grateful for all of the support we have received from our various promoters and sponsors, and we thank them for helping to create opportunities for our members to compete on the international stage so they can try to emulate the success achieved by Roger Chapman, who won two Senior Major Championships in 2012.”

Chapman will also defend his US Senior Open Championship when he leads the European contingent at Omaha Country Club in Nebraska, from July 11-14, although the event does not count towards the Senior Tour Order of Merit.

Q.  What's your status this year?

RUSSELL KNOX:
Automatic conditional status.  I finished 143 on the Money List last year and it was good enough to get me in this week and hopefully I can take advantage of it.

Q.  Because the reshuffle is coming up

RUSSELL KNOX:
I don't think my category reshuffles.  I don't think it does.  I mean, just try to play good when I get the chance.

Q.  Talk about today.

RUSSELL KNOX:
Putted very well.  That was the first thing, holed a couple nice medium to long putts which helped.  Playing a new Cleveland driver this week.  After Phil went on about trying a new driver last week, I thought I'd give it    it worked.  Drove it very well and from the fairway on this course, you can have some shorter clubs in.  Hit nice iron shots.  Putted great.
So it was a good round, eight birdies.  The birdie on the second, I had just bogeyed No. 1 it was nice to get birdie there.  Forgot about my mistake and a couple holes later, I picked one up so that was nice.

Q.  Did you make another bogey?

RUSSELL KNOX:
Yeah, I bogeyed the par 3 on the back, 14.  I 3 putted.

Q.  Were there any other highlights of those birdies?

RUSSELL KNOX:
No.  Hit a good 5 iron in to the long par 4 on the back, 15 uphill there.  Hit a good driver and 5 iron to a couple feet that.  Was probably my best round of the day.
16, I had like 204 to the pin.  So that was one of those holes you just kind of want to make a par, so to knock it up to three or four feet was a bonus.

Q.  How many events do you get into this year?

RUSSELL KNOX:
Sony, Top 10'ed from my last event at Disney.  So that's the only one I've played so far.  I missed the cut by one shot there.  I tried to Monday qualify for Torrey Pines and Phoenix.  Played nicely both times but didn't make it.
So I came in here with a lot of confidence, because I feel like I've been playing very well.  Just haven't had the chance to play.  It was nice to get off to a good start.

Q.  How do you keep your spirits up when you're not playing and you want to be playing?

RUSSELL KNOX:
Well, it's going to be a mammoth year, so it's kind of nice to take a break to be honest.  But I have been itching to go because I feel like my game has improved a lot.  I finished last year so well, and so I'm just trying to keep the confident high and just waiting for my chance to play good.

Q.  Will you play Web.com in South America?

RUSSELL KNOX:
I'm go to Panama and Colombia and I should get in in Puerto Rico.

Q.  So you're tied for the lead now, but you're not coming back to this course.  How do you play that strategy?

RUSSELL KNOX:
Yeah, I think it's great.  I mean, played great here.  I can just forget about it and it's over and I don't have to do all the pressure of playing well for back to back days because it's a totally different course.  So I can go to Spyglass tomorrow and it's a new challenge and tee it up and get after it again.

Q.  Have you been on the road pretty much all year?

RUSSELL KNOX:
Yeah, I've been gone, this will be my fifth week.  I left January 2, so I've been gone five weeks.  I'm going home on Sunday unless something good happens.

Q.  You're based in Jacksonville?

RUSSELL KNOX:
Yeah.

Q.  What are you doing between tournaments?

RUSSELL KNOX:
I have a family in San Diego, down in Santa Fe and they are nice enough to let me stay in the guest house and take good care of me.  So I've been with them.

Q.  How did you meet them?

RUSSELL KNOX:
I met the wife at a Vision 54 clinic with Pia  Nilsson in Scottsdale.  I work with them on my game and I bumped into her and she was nice enough to ask me to her house one time and I said, sweet.
