RUSSELL KNOX (64) MAKES FLYING START AT PEBBLE BEACH

FROM THE US PGA TOUR WEBSITE
PEBBLE BEACH, California. -- Hunter Mahan was bracing for the worst of Pebble Beach, his golf bag weighed down with rain gear and everything else to handle nasty weather.
Instead, he was reminded how much he loves this place.
It helps that Mahan drilled a 3-wood onto the 18th green for a two-putt birdie that gave him a 6-under 66 and a share of the lead to par with Russell Knox (pictured above) in the AT and T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am
Better yet, the rain everyone was expecting early in the afternoon never showed up.
So when Mahan was asked about the most interesting part of the day, all he could think of was that it was boring -- in a good way.
"I had a good time with my partner. The pace was great. The weather was good," he said. "I think the most interesting thing was we had perfect weather when it was supposed to rain at noon. We were all expecting rain. The bag probably weighs 100 pounds right now."
Mahan took advantage of a gorgeous day by attacking Pebble Beach, the place to be when the conditions are calm. He missed only two greens -- one of those on the edge -- and only had one birdie attempt longer than 20 feet.
It was a good start, but nothing more. With three very different courses in the rotation, weather can change without notice and one course with a different par, no one has a good idea where they stand until after three rounds on Saturday.
Knox, who grew up at Inverness in  northern Scotland and has family roots in California, made the most of his limited starts on the US PGA Tour. He had a 6-under 64 on the Shore Course at Monterey Peninsula.
Knox finished out of the top 125 on the money list last year as a rookie, so his opportunities will be limited this year.
"I came in here with a lot of confidence because I feel like I've been playing very well," Knox said. "Just haven't had the chance to play. It was nice to get off to a good start."
The best round might have belonged to Seung-yul Noh of South Korea, who played at Spyglass Hill. It's typically the toughest of the three courses when conditions are benign, and such was the case on Thursday.
Pebble and Monterey Peninsula played nearly a half-shot under par, while Spyglass was almost a half-shot over par.
Noh reached 7 under until making bogeys on the last two holes for a 5-under 67, which only slightly soured his day. He still had the best score at Spyglass.
"Still a good score. I'm really happy with that," Noh said.
Even more impressive is that he felt half-asleep. Noh played in Dubai last week and is still coping with jet lag.
Also at 5 under were Scott Langley (65 at Monterey Peninsula) – the first graduate of The First Tee program to make it to the PGA TOUR -- and Matt Every, who had a bogey on his final hole at Pebble Beach for a 67.The day was not without a few adventures. Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, among the newest members at Augusta National, beaned a spectator on the sixth hole. Dustin Johnson, a two-time winner here, had a four-putt on his way to a 3-over 73 at Monterey Peninsula. John Daly had a three-putt from 3 feet on the seventh hole and took four to get down from about 18 feet just off the ninth green. He had a 77.

Phil Mickelson, going after a record-tying fifth win in this tournament, couldn't make as many putts at Monterey Peninsula as he did in his wire-to-wire win at the Waste Management Phoenix Open last week. He opened with a 69 at Monterey Peninsula.
"One of the things I've learned over the years here is you need to be patient," Mickelson said. "There's plenty of birdie holes throughout the three courses. Hopefully, I'll get a good run tomorrow and try to shoot myself up into contention."
Lee Westwood made his debut in this tournament by playing with his father, and while he had a 68, he's not sure the score had any bearing on having a good time. Westwood was at Pebble Beach, and while it was a good start for him, he made up ground in the wrong places.
The scoring at Pebble comes on the opening seven holes. He played those in 1 under, missed three putts inside about 12 feet. Then, he picked up four birdies over his final 10 holes.
"But it was nice doing it all with Dad and being able to walk the fairways," Westwood said. "You sort of tick off bucket-list courses, and Pebble Beach would definitely be one of them. To actually play in a competition in the AT&T with your dad and tick that one off is something really special."
About the only thing Mahan doesn't like about this tournament are his memories, particularly two years ago. He made a furious rally on the back nine, twice was tied for the lead, and then reached the par-5 18th in two in the final round. But he three-putted for par, giving D.A. Points a cushion. Mahan was runner-up by two shots.
"It was disappointing to finish second in 2011, so I definitely want to win here," he said. "This is an historic tournament, so I think anyone that tees it up here knows the importance of it and knows that to be a champion, what this would mean. I'm excited to be in this position right now, but obviously there's a lot of work to do. I do look forward to this every year, and definitely want to win this tournament at some point in my career."
DIVOTS: Heath Slocum made four eagles in 1,602 holes that he played on the US PGA Tour last year. He made two in a 13-hole stretch on Thursday, hitting a 3-wood to 7 feet on the sixth hole at Pebble Beach and a 3-wood to 7 feet on the 18th hole. He opened with a 69. ... David Duval, making his first start of the year, opened with a 79 at Spyglass and later said on Twitter his knees were troubling him and he had a hard time walking the course. ... Geoff Ogilvy had a 73 at Spyglass. He needs to finish about fifth this week to qualify for the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship, which he has won twice.

DAVID DRYSDALE LEADING SCOT IN JOBURG OPEN

FROM EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
By MICHAEL GIBBONS, European Tour Press Officer
South Africa’s Richard Sterne and German Max Kieffer produced a pair of sparkling eight under par 63s to share the first round lead at the Joburg Open.
Both players continued the fine form they displayed in Dubai last week, where Sterne finished second and Kieffer shared 17th place behind Stephen Gallacher, as they tackled the West Course at the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Course.
The first two rounds of the Joburg Open are being played over the West and East Courses, with each of the 209 players in action playing one round on each before the tournament reverts to the more difficult East Course for the final two days.
The prospect of a tougher challenge for the next three days certainly does not phase the 2008 Joburg Open champion Sterne, though.
He said: “I had three good rounds around the East Course the year I won here. If I can do that again I’ll have a chance on Sunday.”

Sterne’s 2008 victory was the start of a clean sweep of the three co-sanctioned European Tour and Sunshine Tour events that winter, but a back injury ravaged his 2010 and 2011 campaigns.

Kieffer, who graduated the Challenge Tour last year, continued the impressive start to his rookie year on The European Tour, having already finished tied for fourth at the Nelson Mandela Championship in Durban and tied for 17th last week in Dubai.

“When you come from the Challenge Tour everyone says that you have enough to play out here, but you still want to prove it,” said Kieffer.

“It’s a new world and you don’t really know what to expect, so I’m happy that it went pretty good so far. That round was great. I’ve been playing well the last few weeks and I just tried to stay positive on the golf course, and luckily today was another good round.”

South Africa’s Bryce Easton had a hole-in-one en route to posting a seven under 65 on the East Course, which gave him third place on seven under.

Defending champion Branden Grace and two-time winner Charl Schwartzel were also on the East Course on day one, but while former Masters Tournament winner Schwartzel opened with a four under 68, Grace could only produce a level par 72.
SCOTSWATCH
David Drysdale has the honour of being the leading Scot with a four-under-par 68 which puts him no higher than joint 36th, so high is the standard of scoring. If Drysdale (pictured) can eliminate the one "bad" round that usually drags him down, he could build on a solid start.
Scott Henry had a 69, which was a good effort in the Big League for the former Scottish boys and men's amateur stroke-play champion.

Callum Macaulay had a 70, one shot ahead of Marc Warren and George Murray.
Peter Whitehead had a 72 while Chris Doak and Craig Lee recorded 73s.
Alastair Forsyth is unlikely to survive the cut after struggling to an opening round of five-over 77.

McLEARY AND CAMPBELL WIN EAST ALLIANCE GREENSOMES TROPHY

REPORT FROM ALAN GREENSHIELDS
Edinburgh and East of Scotland Alliance secretary/treasurer

The northerly breeze certainly delivered a few red cheeks at Winterfield this week but I think most were happy to get out to play without any rain or snow.

It was a healthy turn-out of 49 partnerships competing for the Richardson and Brownlee Greensomes Trophy. Victors on the day were Jamie McLeary (Dalmahoy) and guest Colin Campbell (Dundas Parks) with a solid net 63.6 (68 less 4.4).

Second place went to the Uphall pairing of Ron Comber and John McDermott with a 64.2 (76 less 11.8)
Andrew Millar and Peter Millar of Musselburgh finished third with 65.6 (73 less 7.4)
Neil Fenwick (Dunbar) and Archie Mason (Musselburgh) came fourth with 66.4 (72 less 5.6)
Chris Gamble and David J Russell of Archerfield finished fifth with 67.0 (69 less 2)
Clear winners of the top scratch prize were Keir McNicoll and Robert Jack of Gullane with a level par 65
Joint second Scratch, four shots behind on 69, were
Ian Taylor (Royal Burgess) and Alan O'Neill (West Lothian),  Eric Walker and Don West of Burntisland
Third scratch on 70 was shared by two Duddingston partnerships, Iain Stavert and Stuart Smith, and Alastair McLean and Keith Millar.

We now have a break of two weeks with the next outing taking place at The Glen, North Berwick on February 20.

STERNE SETS PACE WITH A 63 IN JOBURG OPEN FIRST DAY

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Richard Sterne’s sublime eight under par 63 gave him a two shot clubhouse lead midway through the opening round of the Joburg Open.
The 31 year old South African, who finished runner-up to Stephen Gallacher in Dubai last week, began with a hat-trick of birdies at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington’s West Course.

Another gain at the eighth was followed by an eagle on the long ninth as the five-time European Tour winner turned in 30, with birdies at the short 13th and 15th completing his scoring.

Sterne, the winner of this event in 2008, was chasing a first win since a back injury reduced him to ten appearances in two years during 2010 and 2011.

His nearest challenger on six under par was America’s former World No 1 amateur from the United States, Peter Uihlein.

The Challenge Tour regular, appearing on a sponsor’s invite, eagled the second and had five birdies before a late bogey at the 17th.

While the best of the scoring was taking place on the West Course, South African Bryce Easton and Swede Björn Åkesson reached five under on the East Course to be in a share of third place - the former acing the par three 12th.

Two-time winner Charl Schwartzel was amongst the later starters and reached one under through three holes on the East Course.
