MORE WRIGHT STUFF FOR SCOTS AS THEY TAKE THREE-SHOT LEAD IN PORTUGAL

 By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Scotland have jumped into a three-shot lead at the halfway stage of the PGAs of Europe international team championship at Palmares Golf Resort on Portugal's Algarve.
The Scots' low-scoring hero was against West Linton's Welshman, Gareth Wright, the Glenmuir club  professional champion.
He followed up his first-day four-under-par 68 with a 69 despite starting with a bogey 5. It turned out to be the only blemish on his card. Wright covered the remaining 17 holes in four under par with birdies at the fifth, 10th, 15th and 16th.]
David Patrick (Elie Sports Club) and David Orr (Mearns Castle) both returned solid par-matching 72s for Scotland to post a best two-from-three day's total of 141, four shots inferior to their first-round total but good enough to go clear with a 10-under-par 278 tally.
England, joint leaders at the start of the day, could manage only a second-round total of 144 for a 281 36-hole aggregate.
Stuart Little had their best score of 71 and team-mates Craig Slave and Steve Parry both reutrned 73s.Holland are third on 286, five adrift of England with defending champions France, nine shots off Scotland's hot pace on 287.

KRIS NICOL JOINS THE ROUND-IN-59 SELECT CLUB OF WORLD GOLFERS

KRIS NICOL IN THE MONTROSE MERCANTILE CLUBHOUSE WITH HIS
               MEMORABLE SCORECARD FOR A 10-UNDER-PAR 59 TODAY

Fraserburgh tour pro Kris Nicol today joined the select few golfers around the world who have returned a tournament score of 59.
He did it in the North-east Alliance over the winter course at Montrose - one of the oldest links layouts in the world - which is only 5,566yd long and has a par of 69 - but, nevertheless, it was a fantastic display of precision golf by the 28-year-old who plies his trade on the Alps Tour.
Nicol's figures were:
OUT - 4 3 3 3 3 3 3 3 4: 29 (five under)
IN - 3 3 3 4 3 4 3 4 3 - 30 (five under)
He did not chip in at any hole and had 25 putts in claiming 10 birdies in a bogey-free round. Another highlight was seven consecutive 3s from the second to the eighth inclusive.
"It was a perfect, sunny day for golf, with no wind at all" said Kris later. "I was fairly relaxed about it all until I stood on the 17th tee and knew I had to finish par-birdie or birdie-par to get a 59. That made me a bit nervous!
"I had to settle for a par 4 at the 17th which really put me under pressure to birdie the last. It boiled down to a 6ft putt on the 18th green, which I managed to hole to complete my memorable round.
"I think my wedge play had a lot to do with it. I was wedging it pretty close to the hole all the way round."
Nicol won a £150 prize for heading a field of 97 players.
Runner-up with a 62 was Tartan Tour supremo Greig Hutcheon who also covered the outward half in five-under-par 29 but hooked a ball out of bounds to bogey the 13th and could not repair the damage well enough to threaten Nicol who was winning for the fourth time in eight weeks.
"No disgrace to be beaten by a 59 - that was some round by Kris!" said Hutcheon who had won three of the previous four weeks' competitions.
Nicol's wins have been at Aboyne, Inchmarlo, Buckpool and Montrose.
Hutcheon's three wins were at Cruden Bay, Newburgh and Craibstone.
There have been 11 NE Alliance fixtures so far this season and Nicol and Hutcheon have won seven between them.

Fraserburgh amateur Justin Duff climbed into third place on the back of a grandstand finish - four 3s in a row: eagle at 15th, par at 16th, birdies at 17 and 18 for 31 home and a 65.
On a balmy day of brilliant score,  we also had arguably the highest ever one-hole score - a 15 at the par-4 14th by Ian Grant (Huntly) who went on to finish with 104 strokes to his credit.
Good for Ian that he did not settle for a No Return.
"I got into a little bit of bunker trouble at the 14th," said the jovial Ian. "Having got out of the sand in umpteen strokes, I promptly pitched back into the bunker again!  I played out backwards in one that time."
There were other oddities on a day when one or two players said they were bothered with the sun in their eyes - and they were not joking!
Nevada Bob-attached pro Steven Mann went out in 42 and back in 32.
And David Law (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre) surprisingly did not share in the low scoring bonanza. He took 76 blows to get round. He had a triple bogey 7 at the fifth and a double bogey 6 at the ninth in taking 40 to the turn.
Inchmarlo teaching pro Keil Beveridge, who will soon be off to Morocco with girl friend and Scottish amateur champion Laura Murray (Alford) for the Ladies European Tour Q School at Marrakech, played some of his "best golf for years" to come home in 30 after taking 39 for the first nine.
The Rev Manson Merchant (Newmachar) had a No Return after marking up decent enough scores for the first 17 holes. What calamity befell him at the 18th, I can only guess.

JAMES BYRNE SHARING EIGHTH PLACE

Banchory's James Byrne, seeking a third successive top-10 finish on the Asian Developmental Tour, moved up to joint eighth in the Yeangdor ADT tournament with a three-under-par 69 for a halfway total of 139 at Taipei.
He is 10 shots behind the leader by four, local player Lu Chien-soon.

PRESS RELEASE FROM ASIAN DEVELOPMENTAL TOUR

Taipei, November 21: Veteran golfer Lu Chien-soon shot 11 birdies en-route to a sizzling nine-under-par 63 as he charged into a five-shot lead at the halfway stage of the Yeangder ADT today.
Co-overnight leader Lu, who won multiple titles in Asia during the 1980s, blitzed the course with a hot putter, making only 25 putts, to take the lead over Korean T.J. Kim (66) at the season-ending US$120,000 Asian Development Tour (ADT) event.
Brian Locke of the United States, who won his first ADT title a fortnight ago in Malaysia, posted a 67 for third place, six shots from playing partner Lu at the National Garden Country Club.
Lu, who plies his trade on the Champions (Seniors) Tour in the United States, was hot off the blocks, shooting seven straight birdies including a 24-footer on the 12th hole and reeled in four further birdies on the back against two bogeys.

At the age of 52, Lu said a strict practice regime kept him on top of his game and he is aiming for back-to-back victories after winning a senior’s event on home soil last week.

“The last time I made so many birdies was way back in 1983. I remember it was six birdies in a row so this beats that personal record,” smiled Lu, who leads on 15-under-par 129.

“There’s no secret to my fitness because I practise from 7am to 5 or 6pm every day! I don’t do any jogging except for push-ups. When I won last week, I shot a 62 in the second round and many people were saying you can only do that in a seniors’ event. I guess I proved them wrong,” he added.

ADT regular, T.J. Kim, who finished fourth on the Order of Merit in 2010, crafted a flawless score with three birdies in each half. The Korean, who recently opened a golf academy in Korea, had something to prove to his student, Yong Jun, who was on his bag.

“My student is caddying for me this week. Right now, I only have two students so I thought it would be a treat to bring him here. I love this golf course and the weather. When I play here, I don’t feel any pressure,” said the 43-year-old.

The battle for the top-three positions on the Order of Merit, which rewards the players with 2013 Asian Tour cards, is beginning to heat up as Hsu Mong-nan (second), Peter Richardson (third) and Hsieh Chi-hsien (fourth), who won on this venue in August are tied in eighth place on 139.

Nearly over US$4,500 separates second and fourth place on the Order of Merit and Richardson knows it will be a close fight to the finishing line.

“Today’s round helps with my cause. I struggled a bit on the first day but it was a good bounce back. Some of the guys are playing very well so I can’t let my guard down. It is going to be an exciting last two days,” said Richardson, who played college golf at the Purdue University with Asian Tour winners Shiv Kapur and Pariya Junhasavasdikul of Thailand.

Current Order of Merit leader Jay Bayron of the Philippines is likely to earn playing rights on the Asian Tour as he shot a 70 to lie in 21st position.

The halfway cut was set at even-par 144 with a total of 60 players making it through to the last two rounds.

BROADCASTING BOOTH MAY BE NEXT FOR Q SCHOOL FAILURE RICH BEEM

                                         FROM THE CBS SPORTS.COM WEBSITE

Former US PGA champion Rich Beem (pictured) failed to make it through the second stage of US Q-school last week, leaving him only limited status as a past winner for what would appear to be limited room in a short season.
So what's next for the Beemer? Perhaps a move to the broadcast booth - in Europe.
Beem said he has been contacted by Sky Sports to do commentary for US PGA Tour events that are shown in Europe, similar to what Butch Harmon does at the majors and the World Golf Championships.
Beem says his broadcasting experience is limited, though the job would come naturally to him.
"I've got the gift of gab," Beem said. "I am full of a lot of things I want to say "
Beem worked for TNT Sports at the US PGA Championship in 2010 at Whistling Straits, with two days for the 3-D coverage on the par-3 11th and par-3 17th, and then Saturday and Sunday covering the marquee group.

AZINGER, THE MAN WHO POPULARISED THE BELLY PUTTER

FROM THE CBS SPORTS.COM WEBSITE

NAPLES, Florida (AP) - If it had not been for Paul Azinger (pictured) picking up a long putter that belonged to a short man, there might not be such a fuss over belly putters.
The USGA and R and A are close to announcing their position on long putters that are anchored to the body. That they have pledged to make an announcement by the end of the year has most believing a ban is imminent.
If that's the case, the guy who started it all thinks that would be a shame.
"Everybody is looking to improve their game," Azinger said in an interview last week. "That technique is good for some, and it didn't work for others."
What befuddles him is the advancements in equipment over the last 20 years, particularly with golf clubs. He referred specifically to the Great Big Bertha driver, which at the time looked enormous and had a big sweet spot. Azinger was only partially joking when he said that club now looks like a 4-wood.
"It's OK for manufacturers to figure out game improvement," Azinger said. "But if a player figures it out, we're going to ban it?"
For the former PGA champion, it was more of a fluke.
He was putting poorly when he went into the pro shop while at home in Florida in late 1999, grabbing putters of the rack when he came across a long putter that is anchored to the chest. Only this one belonged to someone much shorter than Azinger.
"I grabbed it, was lining it up perfect and stuck it into my belly because of the length," Azinger said. "I hit it all over the pro shop and made everything, and then walked outside and made everything."
Azinger checked to make sure it was legal, and he was on his way. At the mixed-team event, he says he made 13 birdies and an eagle in two days of four-balls with Se Ri Pak as his partner. Alas, they lost in a playoff to John Daly and Laura Davies. Azinger took his belly putter to Hawaii and won the Sony Open by seven shots.
But here's the other side to this magical belly putter - he never won again. And he was quick to point out that while three of the last five major champions had a belly putter, it took 11 years before someone (Keegan Bradley) won a major.
"Then all of a sudden it's being looked at because some guys have success doing it," Azinger said. "You don't see guys shooting 57, 58, 59 with the belly putter. ... It can help you - there's no two ways about it. But it's not helping everybody."
In a subsequent text message, Azinger again suggested that the USGA and R&A were concerned about the wrong piece of equipment.
"The belly putter doesn't guarantee you'll putt better," he said. "But today's drivers will guarantee you'll hit the ball farther."
