RUSSELL KNOX MAKES TOP TEN BUT LOSES CARD

Russell Knox shot a final round of five-under-par 67 to finish joint ninth in the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Classic at Lake Buena Vista, Florida today (Sunday) but the $112,800 he won was not enough to save losing his USA PGA Tour card. The Inverness-born, Jacksonville Beach-based Scot, who had earlier rounds of 66, 72 and 72, finished 143rd on the final money table with earnings of $512,584. He moved up 13 places with his last-ditch effort but only the top 125 kept their playing rights for next season. Kevin Chappell was the man in 125th place with earnings of $647,510. The weekend tournament winner was American Charlie Beljan with rounds of 68, 64, 71 and 69 for 16-under-par 272. He won by two shots from Matt Every and Robert Garrigus. His wild week at Disney ended with a comfortable lead and his first PGA TOUR victory. What a turnaround in just two days. Beljan struggled to breathe and his blood pressure spiked during the second round, which ended with him being wheeled out of the scoring room on a stretcher. He spent the night at the hospital. It turned out to be a panic attack that was out of control. For 36 holes, he feared the panic attack might return. By the end of play Sunday, the 6ft 4in 28-year-old rookie had completed a dream week. Beljan ran off four straight birdies around the turn and built a five-shot lead on the back nine. He closed with a bogey for a 3-under 69 and a two-shot win at the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Classic. After knocking in the last putt, he tossed his putter and walked around the 18th green on the Magnolia Course pumping his fists as it all began to sink in. Beljan was No. 139 on the PGA TOUR money list coming into the final event of the year and figured he was headed back to Q-school. His win gives him a two-year exemption, a trip to Maui for the Hyundai Tournament of Championship and a spot in the PGA Championship next year. "What a joy," he said. "This is the greatest feeling ever." He hoisted his 7-week-old son on the 18th green as a band played "Zippity-Do-Dah." Even by Disney's standards, this was an unimaginable journey. Beljan thought he was going to die on Friday when his chest was heaving as he tried to breathe. He sat in the fairway and paramedics followed him around the back nine of Palm Course in his second round. He got only an hour of sleep in the hospital Friday night, leaving his golf shoes on until about 4:30 a.m., then came to the course Saturday not knowing if he could finish one hole, let alone all 18. And when he woke Sunday, he had a pounding headache and an uneasy stomach. All that is forgotten. Beljan, who finished on 16-under 272, became the fourth rookie to win on tour this year. Robert Garrigus got within two shots of him with about an hour to go until he stopped making birdies and had to settle for a 68. He finished two shots behind, along with Matt Every, who closed with a 68. Tim Herron was the other big winner Sunday, closing with a 69 to tie for ninth. That gave him enough money to move from No. 138 to No. 124 on the money list, giving him full status on TOUR for the 2013 season. Kevin Chappell finished at No. 125. He wound up $1,809 ahead of Jerry Kelly, but Chappell wasn't safe until Charlie Wi and Josh Teater each made par on the last hole. If either had made bogey, Kelly would have moved up one position -- from a six-way tie for ninth to a seven-way tie for eighth -- that would have allowed him to pass Chappell. Instead, Kelly is out of the top 125 for the first time in his career. Beljan earned $846,000 for the victory, capping a long, hectic season in which he learned he was going to be a father, got married in March and first began suffering panic attacks after he passed out on a flight home from the Reno-Tahoe Open in early August. Beljan showed a few signs that he might crack. He three-putted from behind the fifth green, and then was disgusted with an approach that just missed the green to the left on No. 7. After getting a drop because his left foot was on a sprinkler head, he rolled in an 18-foot birdie off the green, screamed "Go!" at a wedge that obeyed him and settled a foot away for a tap-in birdie on the eighth, and then holed a 30-foot birdie on the ninth. He's so long off the tee that the par-5 10th was the easiest of his four straight birdies, and when he knocked in a 30-footer on No. 12, Beljan's lead was up to five shots. There was only one nervous moment after that. Instead of playing it safe off the tee at the 13th, he hit driver into the woods, went into a bunker, then across the green, and made a quick double bogey. Garrigus made a birdie ahead of him on the 14th, and suddenly, the lead was only two shots. No need to panic. Beljan's 12-foot birdie putt on the 14th caught just enough of the right side of the cup to fall. Garrigus didn't make another birdie, and Beljan's only other big blunder was knocking a birdie attempt some 7 feet by the cup at No. 16. He made that one coming back for par, and reached the 18th tee with a three-shot lead. Typical of the final event of the year, the biggest drama was surrounding the ever-changing money list. Herron looked to be in good shape until he hit his tee shot into the water on the 17th hole and made double bogey, and then had a 20-foot birdie putt hang on the edge of the cup on the 18th hole. He figured he needed that to get his card, and walking off the green he stepped on his bag and gave it a swift kick. He was ready to give the bag another kick when Golf Channel announcer Billy Andrade said he might be safe. Wi and Teater, playing one group apart, hit the fairway and the green on the 18th for regulation pars to spare Chappell, who started the week at No. 123. Teater, in the final group, ran his birdie putt about 2 feet by the hole, but knocked that in and Chappell was safe. Chappell tweeted, "Well I am glad that is over thanks for all the support. It was a level 1 and 2 event. The juniors showed great spirit in playing on through a very wet afternoon. 

Connor McKinney had the best score of the day with 65 against a par of 54. Not far behind was Craig Jackman with 66.

CAMERON TOPS FIELD OF 105 AT NORTH SCOTTISH ALLIANCE

Two under par 68 was the leading scratch score in Saturday's North Scottish Golfers' Alliance fixture at Forres. 

Near perfect overhead conditions enabled Allan Cameron (Fortrose and Rosemarkie) to garner six birdies - 3rd, 4th, 6th, 14th, 16th, and 18th against bogeys at the par-3 fifth and seventh and a double at the second. 

He led home the field of 105 (highest for three years) by two strokes.

Leading handicap competitor Mike Lyall (Torvean) will have a smaller handicap next week after a 63 off 11 won Class 2 by three strokes.

MANASSERO BEATS OOSTHUIZEN IN SINGAPORE PLAY-OFF

Italian teenager Manassero finished a marathon final day in style to win the Barclays Singapore Open after a play-off with Louis Oosthuizen at Sentosa GC.
The 19 year old eagled the third play-off hole from 15 feet to deny Oosthuizen a third win of the season, and hand The Race to Dubai title to Rory McIlroy after the World Number One finished third.
With much of the third round incomplete at the start of the day after lengthy storm delays on Thursday and Friday, Manassero set about completing a seven under par 64 to lead by two going into the final round.
The Italian, who became The European Tour’s youngest winner two years ago and added a second title in neighbouring Malaysia last season, then birdied the par five 18th for a final round 69 to tie with Oosthuizen on 13 under after the former Open Champion had followed a 65 with a closing 67.
Two trips back down the 18th failed to split the pair – Oosthuizen bravely holing a seven foot birdie putt after Manassero chipped to two feet first time around, before the 30 year old missed from five feet after his opponent failed to get up-and-down from the edge of the green.
Both were on the putting surface in two at the third time of asking, but when Oosthuizen missed from 30 feet Manassero showed nerves of steel to become the first teenager to win three European Tour titles.
“It’s been an extremely long day,” said Manassero. “The adrenaline kept me going and the key was starting really well this morning. Starting with some birdies gave me a lot of adrenaline to go forward.
“The play-off was just a great honour to play with Louis - it’s been amazing really. This year has been a tough year for me going through a few swing changes, but it has been amazing this week. I’m glad this came in such a great tournament.”
Manassero had four birdies in a row from the fourth in his third round to hit the front early this morning, and when overnight leader Thomas Björn faded on the back nine Oosthuizen emerged as his nearest challenger.
The Masters Tournament runner-up was two behind with a round to play before birdieing the first to get within one.
He found trouble off the tee at fifth, however, and missed his par putt from 18 feet.
Manassero birdied the second before chipping from sand to within two feet at fourth for an obligatory gain, as Oosthuizen found water at the seventh only to almost hole his fourth from the fairway and save par.
Oosthuizen caught Manassero with a hat-trick of birdies from the ninth, but looked to have thrown away his chances of winning with back-to-back bogeys at the 12th and 13th.
He chipped in at the 14th, though, and a brilliant pitch to within two feet at the par five 18th saw him set the target at 13 under.
After bogeying the 15th Manassero needed a birdie, and although The European Tour’s youngest winner saw his putt slide by on the 17th, he made no mistake at the last after reaching the green in two.
McIlroy shot 69-65 on the final day, an eagle at the last confirming his status as European Number One and allowing the Northern Irishman to match Ryder Cup teammate Luke Donald’s 2011 achievement of topping the money list on both sides of the Atlantic.
Björn recovered from his third round 74 with a 68 to take fourth on nine under, with Italy’s Francesco Molinari and three-time winner of the event Adam Scott tied for fifth.

JAMES BYRNE FINISHES JOINT THIRD AT KUALA LUMPUR

	Kuala Lumpur, Sunday: Brian Locke of the United States dominated the PGM-MIDF-KLGCC Masters with a sensational final round of five-under-par 66 to win by six shots today. Locke outplayed the field from start-to-finish for his biggest and first professional win outside of the United States at the weather-shortened RM180,000 (approximately US$60,000) Asian Development Tour (ADT) event. Hsu Mong-nan of Chinese Taipei capped his second successive runner-up finish on the ADT following a 69 while Scotland’s James Byrne and Chang Tse-peng of Chinese Taipei were a further shot back in tied third place at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club East course.  It was Scottish Northern Open champion Byrne's second top-10 finish in a row. Byrne said later: QUOTES FROM JAMES BYRNE "I'm happy with a third place finish as I was well off the pace going into the last six holes but managed to play them in four under par to move up about 10 spots," said Byrne later. "It's nice to back up a top 10 last week with another good result. I've really enjoyed the two ADT (Asian Developmental Tour) events I've played. They are well run tournaments and very competitive, but the standard obviously isn't quite as high as on the main Asian Tour. "One more to go in Taiwan this coming week before getting back on the main circuit. There's a chance I can secure a full card with a win there, but even if I don't its still been very worthwhile playing these events and they've set me up well for a good finish to the year."  Despite playing in only his second ADT event this season, Locke put on a virtuoso performance where he turned in 34 and romped home with two pairs of birdies for a winning total of 12-under-par 201. “It is exciting to win. This is probably my biggest professional win in my career. I won five little events back home. This is the most exciting moment of my golf career, minus the time when I qualified for the US Open last year,” said the 25-year-old Locke. “I’m still new in Asia but I hit the ball good and my game was in a good place. This is a really nice golf course and the conditions were very good, which made it easier to score,” he added. Locke was unfamiliar with the constant weather delays which forced the tournament to be reduced to 54 holes but he kept a cool head through the week and was rewarded with a winner’s pay cheque of US$10,500. “We don’t get much rain back home so this is new for me. We had to wait around two or three hours here and there. I tried to stay focus and hydrated. It took some patience to come in early and finish the round,” said Locke, who turned professional in 2009. He missed out on earning an Asian Tour card at the Qualifying School earlier this year but hopes this victory will provide the motivation to a successful attempt at the 2013 Qualifying School. “I decided not to go to the PGA Tour Q-School because I’m young and I want to travel the world a bit. I think the Asian Tour provides an overall travelling experience. I’ve been in the states my whole life and I decided I wanted to play the three final three ADT events. I hope I have full status on the Asian Tour next year,” said Locke. OOSTHUIZEN SETS CLUBHOUSE TARGET IN BARCLAYS SINGAPORE OPEN

With no redraw the players headed straight back out for the final round, and Oosthuizen birdied the first to get within one.
He found trouble off the tee at fifth, however, and missed his par putt from 18 feet.Manassero birdied the second before chipping from sand to within two feet at the fourth for an obligatory gain, as Oosthuizen found water at the seventh only to almost hole his fourth from the fairway and save par.
That left Manassero three clear of the former Open Champion on 13 under, with England’s Chris Wood – still chasing a first European Tour win after 17 top-ten finishes – third on nine under, one ahead of Björn and compatriot Anders Hansen. Wood holed from 35 feet for birdie at the sixth to join Oosthuizen, but the South African swiftly added gains from ten feet at the ninth and five feet at the tenth to trim Manassero’s lead to one.
Oosthuizen completed a hat-trick of birdies at the 11th from eight feet, and suddenly Manassero’s three shot lead was gone without the 19 year old doing anything wrong.

TIM HELEN WINS TAIWAN SENIOR EVENT BY FIVE

Tim Thelen claimed his third European Senior Tour title of the year after the American soared to a five shot victory at the Fubon Senior Open thanks to a three under par final round of 69.

In the process, Thelen ensured that he will finish in the top four of the 2012 Senior Tour Order of Merit and has therefore earned a place in next year’s US Senior Open Championship.

In trying conditions at Miramar Golf & Country Club, Thelen flourished as his closest challenger and overnight leader going into the final round, Jong Duck Kim, struggling to a nine over par 81.

The man from Texas, who has become the first American to claim three Senior Tour titles in one season since John Grace in 2000, started steadily with pars at the first six holes and by the time he reached the seventh tee, Thelen had made up the three shot overnight deficit as Kim bogeyed the third, fifth and sixth.

Thelen seized the opportunity and vanquished his contender to the throne in clinical fashion as he recorded back to back birdies at the seventh and eighth while Kim dropped a further three shots with a bogey followed by a double bogey.

Suddenly, the 51 year old was five shots clear and not even his first bogey of the tournament at the ninth hole, after finding water, could halt him in his path as he sank a superb 18 foot putt at the 13^th to card another birdie and put one hand firmly on the trophy.

Thereafter, Thelen was never going to be caught but he finished in style nonetheless, splitting the fairway with his drive down the par five 18^th before firing a two iron to 18 feet and two-putting for a birdie which earned him a winning score of 14 under par – the exact score he had targeted at the beginning of the week.

“It’s unbelievable,” said Thelen. “Words cannot describe how incredible this is for me. I had been a teaching pro for over 20 years and I was just delighted to get on the Senior Tour last year but to win three times this year is just unfathomable.

“The fact that I am out here playing with some of the best Senior players in the world is so great but to be competing and winning is just way beyond my wildest dreams.

“I played really well all three days out here and the wind blew hard today and when it rained, it rained really heavily but I hung in there and thankfully I came out with the win.”

Frankie Minoza of the Philippines and South African Chris Williams both had opportunities at the last hole to narrow the winning margin to four but both missed close putts for birdie and settled for a share of second place on nine under par.

Former Senior Tour Order of Merit winner Boonchu Ruangkit finished in fourth place on eight under par while the best of the Taiwanese was Ji-xiang Lin, who carded a final round 75 to finish in tenth place on four under par.

Thelen’s rise to prominence has been one of the stories of the 2012 Senior Tour season and provides a beacon of hope for any players attempting to gain entry to the tour via the Qualifying School system.

A former college mate of Colin Montgomerie at Houston Baptist University, Thelen won Qualifying School by five shots to gain an exemption for the 2011 campaign and he retained that card thanks to a 24^th place finish in the Order of Merit last year.

But this year his career has been launched to a whole new stratosphere, as the two-time National PGA Club Professional Championship winner claimed his maiden Senior Tour title at the Berenberg Bank Masters before following that up immediately with a second win at the Bad Ragaz PGA Seniors Open the following week.

His latest victory caps an incredible year for Thelen and he will be hoping to build on that at the season-ending MCB Tour Championship in Mauritius in December.

BELJAN COMES OUT OF HOSPITAL TO KEEP LEAD IN FLORIDA

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Florida -- Charlie Beljan was in a hospital bed in the middle of Friday-Saturday night, still wearing his golf shoes, thinking his season was over.

He was about six hours from his tee time Saturday at Disney. Just 12 hours earlier, he was having a panic attack on the golf course so severe that he could barely breathe, his blood pressure spiked and his arms felt numb. After signing his card, he was strapped into a stretcher, loaded into an ambulance and taken to a hospital.
"I thought I literally had a chance to die," Beljan said.
In a turnaround that even by Disney's standards seems like a fairy tale, the 28-year-old rookie now has a chance to win his first PGA TOUR title.
Beljan was released from the hospital, overcame two early bogeys and was solid over the final hour in the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Classic for a 1-under 71 that gave him a two-shot lead going into the final round.
"I honestly didn't know if I was going to play one hole, any holes or was I going to get through the day," Beljan said. "I felt good, better as the day went on, and I just hung tough, hung in there. I knew what the rewards were at the end of the week if I could pull something off, and that's kind of what kept me going."
The rewards were ample.
This is the final US PGA Tour event of the year, and Beljan is No. 139 on the money list. Only the top 125 get full cards for next year. Doctors told him he was in good enough health to be released, but perhaps not to play golf. He ignored their recommendations.
"The position I'm in, it's kind of hard not to show up," he said before teeing off.
Beljan had a pair of three-putt bogeys that cost him his three-shot lead after three holes, and felt some tightening in his chest as he approached the turn, the same symptoms that caused much fear Friday. But he steadied himself, began the back nine with back-to-back birdies, and kept in front.
He was at 13-under 203, two shots ahead of Brian Gay (67), Josh Teater (67) and Charlie Wi, who was tied for the lead until closing with two bogeys for a 70.
"It's nice to be able to walk around and smile," Beljan said. "Yesterday, I was hanging on for my life."
When last seen at Disney, Beljan was gasping to draw a big breath and sitting in the fairway to wait his turn to hit. Paramedics followed him around the back nine after taking his blood pressure on the 10th tee. After signing for a 64, Beljan emerged from the scoring room strapped into a stretcher and was loaded into an ambulance.
For most of the night, he felt 99 percent sure he wouldn't be playing. But with the comfort of knowing that he was physically fine, he went back to his hotel for a shower, breakfast and headed to the golf course. Despite being nervous that another episode could strike again, he was steady for so much of the day.

Now comes the hard work.
Beljan's wife, 7-week-old son and mother-in-law were flying in from Phoenix for the final round. He has long dreamed of how cool it would be to have his family come onto the green to celebrate his first US PGA Tour win.
But there's a long way to go.
Beljan's three-shot lead was gone before he stepped onto the fourth tee in the third round. He will start Sunday with 11 players separated by three shots. That includes McGladrey Classic winner Tommy Gainey and Camilo Villegas, along with Robert Garrigus, who won at Disney two years ago. The group at 205 included Vaughn Taylor, who like Beljan is making a last-ditch effort to keep his card.
Beljan was simply thrilled to be playing.
"I think the big advantage for me is I'm not thinking about the golf or the putts or the chips or the shots or the swings," said Beljan, who didn't even realize he was in the lead until about 10:30 p.m. Friday at the hospital. "I'm just thinking about my health, one shot at a time, one hole at a time. And shoot, the last 36 holes it's worked out pretty well."
Beljan showed off his power on the opening hole when he was behind a tree 183 yards from the hole. He hit a pitching wedge straight up and over the tree, with enough on it to reach the green. He three-putted from 50 feet, however, and then dropped another shot on the par-3 third with a three-putt from about 25 feet on the fringe.
His only other bogey came from a bunker on the 12th.
Several players made a run at him -- Wi, Gainey among them -- and Charles Howell III was right in the mix. Howell was one shot out of the lead until driving into the water on the 17th to make triple bogey, and then making bogey on the last hole to finish five shots behind.
Beljan said a variety of tests showed nothing was wrong with him.
"Physically, everything is wonderful," he said. "It's that little space between those ears that I've got to work on."
This all started about three months ago when he fainted on a flight home from the Reno-Tahoe Open as he was going to the bathroom. Since then, Beljan said he has had a half-dozen panic attacks, usually in controlled environments when he can settle himself down. This one came on a golf course, and it spiraled out of control on Friday.
When he showed up at the course, he felt nervous and a little embarrassed about Friday's afternoon's episodes. But he doesn't mind if it means a chance to win a tournament, or even keep his job for next year. Even if he doesn't win, Beljan would need to finish around 10th to move into the top 125.
Besides, it would be a fitting way for a wild year to end.
After getting his card at Q-school last year, he had hand surgery before starting the season. He found out at the Sony Open that he was going to be a father. He was married in March. He played poorly all year except for one week at The Greenbrier Classic. His baby was born at the end of the FedExCup season. He fainted on the plane. He at least secured a spot inside the top 150, only to realise that won't mean as much next year because of a shorter season.
"It's been a long, exciting, hectic, crazy, stressful year," he said. "But hopefully, we're going to end it with a bang."
