ANOTHER GOOD PERFORMANCE BY PAUL SHIELDS ON US PRO TOUR

Scotland amateur international Paul Shields (Kirkhill), enjoying a golfing holiday in America, has put in another good performance in his second competition on the All-American Professional Golf Tour
Paul broke 70 in one of his rounds last week and he has done it again with a five-under-par 66 in the second round of the tournament at Golf Club at Vistoso, Tucson in Arizona.
His first round was a creditable 73 so he is lying in 15th place on three-under-par 139 and is almost certain to survive cut for the second week in a row.
Nice work, Paul!
Leading the field on 133 is American pro Brady Schnell with rounds of 63 and 67 for 130.
Play is not finished for the day at the time of writing.

ELS HAS NOT PLAYED 13 EVENTS SO HIS NAME COMES OFF EURO TOUR MONEY LIST

FROM THE AOL.COM SPORTS SERVICE
Ernie Els has had his name removed from the European Tour money list and the Open champion is no longer eligible for the £5million DP World Tour Championship in Dubai in two weeks or a share of the £2.4million end-of-season bonus pool.
Tour members are required to play 13 counting events in a year and the 43-year-old South African's joint runner-up finish at the WGC-HSBC Champions in China this weekend was only his 10th appearance on the circuit.
To stay on the Order of Merit and play in Dubai Els would have had to compete in this week's Singapore Open and then either the South African Open or Hong Kong Open next week, but his next scheduled tournament is the Asian Tour's Iskandar Johor Open in Malaysia on December 13-16.
Winner of his fourth major at Royal Lytham in July, Els was initially listed in sixth place on the "Race to Dubai" following Ian Poulter's win this weekend, but now it will be the first time since 1997 that he does not appear on the final list.
The top 60 at the end of next week qualify for Dubai and, with no Els, England's Lee Slattery moves into 60th place. He plays in both Singapore and Hong Kong.
There is a first prize of nearly £850,000 in Dubai and the bonus pool, even though it has been slashed in half this season, ranges from £642,000 to the leading money-winner - almost certainly Rory McIlroy - to £64,000 for the player finishing 10th.
Scot Martin Laird and American John Daly, currently 64th and 81st respectively, have also only played 10 events, but they stay on the list. Laird joined as an affiliate member, while in his "past winner" category Daly was not guaranteed 13 starts.
McIlroy, with the US PGA Tour money list title already secured, has a lead of more than £616,000 over Ryder Cup team-mate Peter Hanson, who has decided not to join the world number one in the next two tournaments and could therefore be too far back come Dubai.
The same applies to third-placed Justin Rose and fourth-placed Poulter.

McILROY DEFENDS DECISION TO MISS HSBC CHAMPIONS TO WATCH GIRLFRIEND PLAY TENNIS

FROM BT YAHOO.COM SPORTS SERVICE
World number one Rory McIlroy has defended his decision to skip last week's WGC-HSBC Champions tournament in China to watch his girlfriend play tennis but admits that the criticism of his no-show was fair.
The Ulsterman returns to action at this week's co-sanctioned Singapore Open after taking a week off to cheer on Caroline Wozniacki at the Tournament of Champions in Bulgaria, a break he said was necessary despite the disappointment of golf fans.
"I think the criticism is fair... it's a World Golf Championship event, one of the big ones. It was a tough one to miss, especially watching it on television," McIlroy said.
"But I can't play every week. If I had played that I would have finished the season having played in Turkey, after the Ryder Cup and the FedEx Cup stuff. It's just too much and one event had to miss out and that was it.
"I played the course at Mission Hills a couple of years ago and didn't really like it. I thought it was a course where I would get frustrated and am glad the event is going back to Shanghai next year."
World number two Tiger Woods also skipped the Shenzhen event in favour of rest and McIlroy realises that since rising to the top of the game, he too needs to strike the right balance between playing, fulfilling media commitments and taking time off.
"Managing time is a very important part of my life," the 23-year-old  added. "I thought I did a little bit better this season than I did last year after I won the US Open in 2011.
"People want more of you, they want you to do more things and you have to learn how to say 'no'.
"You have to be selfish sometimes. First and foremost, you have to look after yourself and fit in the things that you want to do.
"I am in a fortunate position that I can dictate where I want to play, what I want to do and where I want to go and as long as I am in that position then that's lovely."
Before taking their break, McIlroy and Woods squared off in a lucrative 18-hole exhibition in Guangzhou and despite beating the American in a good-natured showdown, Rory maintains their friendship does not compromise their rivalry.
"It's not difficult to be competitive against him at all," McIlroy said. "For me, I never go into a tournament trying to beat just one player I try to play the golf course the best I can.
"There are going to be times where I come up against friends and guys I have close links with and you don't think about those things.
"You just try and play the best you can. I am happy for the guy next to me to shoot seven-under as long as I shoot eight-under and win. I don't care if they play well or not, I just want to play better."

MACAULAY, LAW, DOHERTY START WELL IN SPAIN

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Calum Macaulay (69), David Law (70) and Jack Doherty (70) made the best start of the 15 Scots in action at the four Spanish golf courses in Stage 2 of the European Tour Qualifying School process today (Wed).
But Lloyd Saltman (79), Craig Matheson (80) and Ross Kellett (81) will need three excellent scores apiece by Saturday if they are to make up considerable lost ground on the opening day.
There is no cut in any of the Stage 2 tournaments and how many will qualifying from each venue has not been made public by Inverness-born tournament director Mike Stewart (brother of Gillian). It could be around 12 to 15.
Macaulay (pictured above) and Law got off to a flyer at the El Valle course (par 71) near Murcia. The Tulliallan man was out in 37 and home in 32 to be joint 5th in a field of 76 at the end of the day.
Law, playing out of the Paul Lawrie Golf Centre, had halves of 36-34 to be joint 10th.
The Aberdonian had two early bogeys but bounced back with a crop of birdies, including the fifth, seventh, eighth, 10th, 14th and 15th.
Also at El Valle, Banchory's Paul Cormack had a 74 (38-37) to be joint 39th, Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck) a 76 (36-40) to be sharing 55th place while Neil Fenwick (Dunbar) toiled for a 78 (38-40) and joint 64th place in a field of 76.
At the par-72 El Saler course near Valencia, Jamie McLeary's 72 (36-36) has him in joint seventh place and Graham Fox is sharing 13th place with a 73 (36-37).
Lloyd Saltman had two double bogeys in his first five holes on his way to an outward half of 41. He came back in 38 for a 79 which has him in joint 59th place in a field of 75.Craig Matheson sagged after the turn with 43 blows for an 80 which puts him in joint 62nd position.
Ross Kellett, whose Alps Tour form has earned him a place on next year's Challenge Tour, failed to show that kind of form. He started with a double bogey 6 and then bogeyed the fourth, fifth, sixth and eighth in taking 42 to the turn on his way to an 81 for joint 64th place in a field of 75.
At Las Colinas near Alicante, Wallace Booth is in joint 23rd place after a one-over-par 72 (36-36), four shots better than Scott Henderson who had halves of 38-36 for joint 61st place.
Jack Doherty got his one-under-par 70 at
the Lumine course near Tarragona where the scoring was the lowest of the four venues.Welshman Liam Bond and England's Jamie Abbot lead the field with seven-under-par 64s.

Doherty had halves of 34-36
Steven O'Hara had a 73 (34-39) but that earned him only a share of 64th place.Elliot Saltman had halves of 35-41 (a double bogey 6 at the 10th) and his 76 leaves him last of 76 at this venue.
