CO-SANCTIONED EVENTS SHUT OUT PLAYERS WHO NEED THE MONEY

T
FROM THE GOLFWEEK WEBSITEBY ALISTAIR TAIT

Englishmen Tommy Fleetwood and Matthew Baldwin could end their European Tour seasons deeply frustrated, “co-sanctioned” victims of the European Tour’s international schedule.
The bad news has already sunk in for both, the news they weren’t told at the end of last season when they gained European Tour cards through the European Challenge Tour.
Fleetwood finished first on the European Challenge Tour order of merit, Baldwin 10th to graduate to this year’s main Tour. So far so good. However, what they probably didn’t realise at the time was that fulfilling certain goals wasn’t going to be as easy as they thought.
Fleetwood is currently 120th on the European Tour money list. He needs to finish inside the top 115 to keep his card for next year.
Baldwin has no worries about keeping his card. He’s 70th on the money list after a stellar rookie year. However, if he can get to 60th then he gains a place in the no cut, end of season $8 million DP World Tour Championship. A good finish in that cash cow could turn a stellar year into a brilliant one.
No problem, you say. There are three tournaments left with a combined prize fund of nearly $9 million. One good finish by either player can take care of business. Problem is, both players only have the chance of one good finish, not three.
The European Tour Schedule may look good on paper, but it has hidden obstacles, especially for guys like Fleetwood and Baldwin. They will only compete for a share of $780,000 of the aforementioned $9 million. All their eggs are in the SA Open Championship.
This week’s $6 million Barclays Singapore Open and next week’s $2 million UBS Hong Kong Open are co-sanctioned events with the Asian Tour.
The field is a 50-50 split. Baldwin and Fleetwood’s categories mean they don’t even get a sniff of a place in either tournament. The SA Open is also co-sanctioned, but the lower purse means guys further down the European food chain get starts.
Indeed, many European Tour pros who had decent seasons last year can’t get into the Singapore or Hong Kong fields.
Scotland’s Peter Whiteford, pictured above, finished 63rd on last year’s European money list, yet he’s first reserve for Singapore. Whiteford isn’t guaranteed his tour card for next year. He’s currently 110th on the money list.
Of course, there’s an obvious answer to the predicament Fleetwood, Baldwin and Whiteford find themselves in: play better. Fleetwood has competed in 30 events this year, Baldwin and Whiteford 25. Had they performed better in those events they’d have nothing to worry about right now.
Every tour pro sets out to do as well as possible in every tournament, but it’s more imperative in Europe nowadays. There was a time when those who earned European Tour cards were given the luxury of competing in more tournaments late in the season.
In the co-sanctioned age, European Tour pros have to make hay while the sun shines or risk missing out on the harvest altogether.

CONSISTENT KELLETT EARNS PROMOTION TO CHALLENGE TOUR

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Calcarsongolf@scottishgolfview.com
Ross Kellett is one of five players who have gained promotion from the Alps Tour to the European Challenge Tour next season.
The Motherwell man, despite a disappointing joint 47th place finish in the weekend's final event of the Alps Tour - the Masters 13 Allianz at Pont Royal GC near Marseille, had done enough to finish fifth in the Tour's Order of Merit.
The top five who are going up are Northern Ireland's Gareth Shaw, France's Thomas Fournier, England's Jack Senior, France's Jérôme Lando-Casanova and Ross Kellett. Italy's Niccolo Quintarelli will play on upper circuit as well thanks to Jack Senior's ranking on Challenge Tour.
Kellett, who will be 23 on January 9, earned 22,168 Euros from 17 Alps Tour events, one of which he won. He also finished third behind Senior and Casanova in the Rookie of the Year table.
“I’m relieved to finally get over the line. People had been saying that the job was almost done for a few weeks, but a few players had really come into the mix in the last few tournaments," said Kellett.
"I’ve kept my focus on the Alps Tour for the whole season as I knew that’s what I was in control of. I turned down a few other events like the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open and I’m delighted it has paid off in the end.”
In the Masters 13 Allianz Kellett had an uncharacteristic triple bogey and three double bogeys in rounds of 73, 78, 73 and 76 for a 12-over-par total of 300 which earned him 720 Euros.
He had double bogey 6s at the sixth and 17th in his final round today (Sunday).
Kellett finished 23 shots behind the winner of the 15,000 Euros first prize - Frenchman Adrien Bernadet who shot 69, 70, 72 and 66 to win by one shot from Northern Ireland's Gareth Shaw (72-70-70-66), runner-up for the fourth time this season.
Shaw earned 10,000 Euros and was the leading Alps Tour money-winner for the season with a total of 34,545 Euros from 17 events.

CHINESE 14-YEAR-OLD WINS PLACE IN NEXT YEAR'S MASTERS

FROM THE DAILY TELEGRAPH WEBSITE
China's Guan Tianlang will create golfing history next April as the first 14-year-old to compete in the Masters at Augusta. He had his 14th birthday only two weeks ago.
Teenage hot-shot Guan earned an invitation to the 2013 Masters after firing an even-par 71 to win the Asia-Pacific amateur championship by one stroke from Taiwan's Pan Chung-Tseng at Amata Spring Country Club.
Pan shot a final-round 65 but Guan hung on to claim a memorable victory with a 15-under total of 269. Australia's Oliver Goss, who finished third a further shot adrift, said that Guan was "too young to be intimidated."
When Guan tees it up at Augusta in April he will beat the previous age record set by Italy's Matteo Manassero, who was 16 when he played at the year's first major in 2010.
Guan is quickly establishing himself as Asia's latest golf sensation, becoming the youngest player to compete at a European Tour event at the China Open earlier this year.
Japan's Ryo Ishikawa and South Korean Noh Seung-yul both burst onto the scene while still at school, blazing a trail for the next generation of Asian golfers.
Ishikawa, 21, has nine Japanese Tour wins to his name, his first coming as a 15-year-old, while Noh, also 21, captured a European Tour title at the co-sanctioned Malaysian Open in 2010

FROM THE GOLF DIGEST WEBSITE

Golf remains largely an elitist sport in China, though it is growing; the number of courses there has increased from 170 to nearly 600 in the last eight years, according to a story by China Daily.
We asked Dan Washburn, an expert on golf in China and a contributor to Golf Digest and Golf World for his thoughts on what impact Guan might have on Chinese golf. His email response:
"Guan's historic achievement certainly can't hurt golf's prospects for growth in China, but the obstacles the sport faces in the country are real. It will be interesting to see how much coverage Guan's Masters adventure attracts in China beyond the niche golf publications. Even Feng Shanshan, winner of China's first major, struggles for recognition in her home country.

"Golf is going to grow in China -- there is no doubt about that. Trying to predict how fast or to what heights, however, is a fool's errand. But if this drumbeat continues -- Feng, Zhang, and now Guan -- Chinese golf is soon going to be hard for the world to ignore, no matter how far from the mainstream the sport continues to be in China."
If China does begin to tap its golf potential, well, consider what happened to women's golf when Korean parents began sending their daughters en masse to train in the U.S. China might not similarly dominate a men's game that has substantially greater depth and international influence, but it might upend the balance of power and put Asia on equal footing with the U.S., Europe and Australia.
Guan, meanwhile, has been playing golf in the U.S. at least since 2005, when he finished fourth in the six-and-under division of the Callaway Junior World Championship in San Diego. He won the 11-and-12 division of the tournament by 11 strokes in 2011 and tied for 22nd in the 15-to-17 division in July.
His introduction to international golf at the elite level came last April, when he was 13 and became the youngest player in European Tour history, at the China Open (he missed the cut). The story received considerable attention in precincts other than the U.S., to the point that the British bookmaker Ladbrokes offered 1,000-to-1 odds that by his 18th birthday he'd be ranked No. 1 in the world.
Don't bet on it. Beyond that, don't bet against him. Among those Guan defeated on Sunday was Australian Oliver Goss, a quarter-finalist in the U.S. Amateur and the winner recently of the Australasia Tour's Western Australian Open.
Guan, of course, won't win the Masters in April, perhaps sparing, to which freelance golf writer Dave Andrews jokingly alluded on Twitter, Augusta National from having to serve Happy Meals at the Champions Dinner in 2014.
But he will make history and headlines, helping fulfill the Asia-Pacific Amateur's mandate, to grow the game, possibly doing so in ways that would have been unimaginable only a few years ago.

TOM LEHMAN TAKES LEAD IN US SENIORS TOUR FINALE

FROM THE US CHAMPIONS TOUR WEBSITE
SCOTTSDALE, Arizona (AP) -- Tom Lehman took the lead in the Charles Schwab Cup Championship and moved closer to becoming the first player to win the season points title for two straight years.
Lehman birdied the final hole for an 8-under 62 and a one-stroke lead over Fred Couples on Saturday in the Champions Tour's season-ending event. Couples also shot a 62, making two eagles in a round that could have been much lower."I really like the pairing," Lehman said. "Hopefully, he plays his best, and, hopefully, I play my best and we'll see what happens. ... You got to go out there and make birdies and shoot low again."
Lehman shot the lowest round of his Champions Tour career for the second straight day. At 63-62 and 15 under, he was a stroke off the tour record for consecutive rounds set by Bruce Fleisher at 60-64 and 16 under in the 2002 RJR Championship.
"I played really well the last two days, probably as well as I've played in six months," said Lehman, a two-time winner this year. "I hit the ball very solidly both days. I gave myself a lot of chances for birdie. I've made my share, obviously. I think the big thing though is the saves. I've made a couple of really amazing key saves over the last couple of days."
Couples is playing for the first time since a back injury forced him to withdraw during the first round of the Boeing Classic outside Seattle in late August. Before this week, he hadn't completed a competitive round since winning the Senior British Open in July for his second victory of the year.
"If I can play like this every two months, I think I might finish my career playing four times a year and just say, "The heck with it,'" Couples said, joking.
Lehman was 17 under after three days in perfect conditions on Desert Mountain's Cochise Course. He entered the week second behind Bernhard Langer in the Charles Schwab Cup competition for a $1 million annuity.
Langer, tied for 10th at 6 under after a 70, was a projected 529 points behind Lehman after starting play Thursday with a 211-point lead. The tournament winner will get 880 points, with players receiving a point for every $500 they earn in the $2.5 million event.
Langer eagled the par-5 18th hole to get a little closer to Lehman, who would win the title with a tournament victory no matter where Langer finishes.
"I was certainly not happy with my day today," Langer said. "My mindset has to be aggressive tomorrow. I'll pretty much go at everything."
Jay Haas, five strokes ahead of Lehman at the start of the round after matching the tour-record Friday with a 60, had a 69 to drop two strokes back.
"I just wasn't as sharp," Haas said. "But the birdie at the last hole still gives me a chance tomorrow, and leaves a better taste in my mouth."
Lehman made his best par save on the par-4 16th, holing a bending 35-foot putt from the fringe after popping up a 3-wood drive into a rock outcropping in the middle of the fairway.
"I might have teed it up a hair too high, but I just popped it up and it landed right in the rocks," Lehman said. "I actually got kind of lucky that I could at least chip it out and hit a 9-iron."
His putt broke about 5 feet.
"It was one of those ones, quite frankly, I was just hoping to get close," Lehman said. "It was going to take my licking and keep on ticking with a bogey."
He then holed a 20-footer for birdie on the par-3 17th and got up and down for birdie from the front greenside bunker on the 18.
Couples chipped in for eagle on the par-5 eighth, his low runner veering to the right in the last few feet. He hit a 3-iron from 239 yards to 8 feet on the par-5 15th to set up his second eagle, and got to 16 under with a 20-foot birdie putt on 17.
He also missed five birdie tries inside 12 feet in the middle of the round, and settled for a par on the 18 after hitting his approach into the greenside bunker well left of the flag.
"I did leave a couple out there, but I made a couple of nice 20-footers and, obviously, chipped in on No. 8 for eagle," Couples said.

IAN POULTER WINS WGC-HSBC CHAMPIONS TITLE IN CHINA

FROM THE ASIAN TOUR WEBSITE

Dongguan, China: Ian Poulter claimed a two-shot victory at the US$7 million WGC-HSBC Champions after overcoming an overnight four-shot deficit with a second successive seven-under 65 on Sunday.
The flamboyant Englishman, Europe’s talisman in the memorable Ryder Cup victory last month when he won all four of his matches, picked up his second title in the World Golf Championships, 12th on the European and third in Asia.
He carded eight birdies to overhaul a faltering Lee Westwood and Louis Oosthuizen, the joint third round leaders, before dropping a shot on the penultimate hole for a four-day total of 21-under-par 267.
South African star Ernie Els and the American trio of Phil Mickelson, Jason Dufner and Scott Piercy all shared second place in Asia’s richest tournament and only World Golf Championships event in the region.
“It’s been an amazing five or six weeks with the Ryder Cup and then coming here in good spirits,” said Poulter, whose triumph was his first of the season.
“As well as I've played this year, it would have been a disappointment personally to have gone that year without winning, and for me and for how I played this year, it's obviously a great and fantastic feeling especially after the Ryder Cup to get my hands back on a great trophy like this.
“I knew that if I stayed patient I’d be right there at the end. It was a special day. I knew there was a good round of golf in me out there on that golf course; as we saw yesterday, if you start going low and get a number on the board then you’re going to be hard to beat.
“I feel confident with the putter right now. It’s so nice to get my hands on another trophy and get back in the winner’s circle.”
World number four Westwood looked solid on the front nine with four birdies and one double bogey but his bid for a first WGC title in his 41st start unraveled with three bogeys after the turn.
Two-time HSBC Champions winner Mickelson was in the thick of action throughout the day. Mickelson’s hopes however ended when he made bogey on the par three 17th hole after a poor tee shot and chip for an eventual 68.
“It was just the worst swing of the week, actually, with that eight iron but it was a very tough pin to get to that I felt like I needed to make birdie. At the time I was two back and trying to make a two,” said Mickelson.
“I tried to carve a few shots into some of the pins and wasn't able to get close enough to them to make birdies to catch him. But he (Poulter) played really well, and I felt like these four days, I played some good golf and I'll hopefully improve on it next week.”
Els, who was returning to action after an ankle injury, signed off with a 67 to challenge Poulter. “Good week. I know where I came up short. I came up short yesterday on 15 and 16, and today on 14 a little putt I missed. I was in contention all week, so that was great,” said the reigning Open champion.

HSBC CHAMPIONS TOURNAMENT BECOMES PART OF US PGA TOUR SCHEDULE

NEWS RELEASE
SHENZHEN, China The stature and growth of golf in Asia was further confirmed today with the announcement by the International Federation of PGA Tours, HSBC, the China Golf Association and the Shanghai Administration of Sport that the HSBC Champions tournament will become part of the US PGA TOUR’s FedExCup schedule, with money earned counting as official money on the US PGA TOUR, and the winner earning a three-year exemption on the US PGA TOUR, with the opportunity to join the organization if he is a non-member.
The HSBC Champions tournament will also award full FedExCup points, plus the 10 percent premium awarded by all World Golf Championships compared to a regular US PGA TOUR event.
The total purse will also increase from US$7 million to US$8.5 million.  These changes bring the HSBC Champions in line with the other three World Golf Championships played in the United States.
Considered some of the most prestigious and important events on golf’s calendar, the World Golf Championships were developed to bring the world’s best players together and have since 1999 delivered the highest-quality, most international fields in the sport.
With today’s announcement, HSBC was proud to announce a new era, extending its title sponsorship of the HSBC Champions for three additional years, through 2015.
Further, the HSBC Champions, which enjoyed a successful, one-year staging on the Olazabal Course at Mission Hills Golf Club Guangdong this week, will return to Shanghai permanently with an official signing ceremony taking place at HSBC’s Headquarters in Shanghai on November 5.
In 2013, the event will once again be played at the Sheshan International Golf Club in Shanghai, where it was staged for seven years (2005-2011).  The 2013 HSBC Champions is scheduled for Oct. 28-Nov. 3.
