CHINESE 14-YEAR-OLD LEADS BY TWO IN ASIA-PACIFIC AMATEUR

Tianlang Guan will take a two-shot lead into the final round at the Asia-Pacific Amateur. The 14-year-old star prospect from China is at 14 under through three rounds at Amata Spring Country Club in Bangkok, Thailand, after a third-round even-par 72.
Guan has held the lead after each round, but Australia’s Oliver Goss made up ground in Round 3 with a 3-under 69. Goss sits at 12 under for the championship. Goss, a quarterfinalist at this year’s U.S. Amateur, had three birdies and no bogeys. Guan, meanwhile, started the day with a 2-over 38 before rebounding on the back nine with a 2-under 34 to get back to even for the day.
“We all started a little bit slow,” Guan said. “I felt a bit nervous and everybody looked a little bit nervous to start with, and there was not much talking. I then started focus on my own game and felt pretty relaxed on the back nine, got a few birdies, so it was all right.”
Thailand’s Prin Sirisommai is third at 9 under and Korea’s Soo-Min Lee is another shot back in solo fourth.
Washington sophomore Cheng-Tsung Pan started Round 3 with a birdie and an eagle in the first two holes, and finished at 5-under 67. It helped him climb to the fifth position on the leaderboard.
The Asia-Pacific Amateur’s winner earns an invitation to the Masters. The winner and runner(s)-up earn exemptions into International Final Qualifying for the Open Championship

BRILLIANT WESTWOOD 61 JOINS OOSTHUISEN IN LEAD

NEWS RELEASE FROM THE ASIAN TOUR

Dongguan, China: Lee Westwood produced a magnificent 11-under-par 61 to tie Louis Oosthuizen for the lead after an action-packed third round at the US$7 million WGC-HSBC Champions today
The Englishman, an Asian specialist where he has won 11 tournaments in the region, was in irrepressible form to shoot 11 birdies for an 18-under-par 196 aggregate at the Mission Hills Golf Club’s Olazabal course.
South Africa’s Oosthuizen started the day five shots ahead of the pack but his lead quickly dwindled as he signed for a 70.
Four-time Major champion Phil Mickelson shot a 66 to trail by three strokes in third place as he kept up his bid for an unprecedented third HSBC Champions title, Asia’s richest championship and lone World Golf Championships event.
American Brand Snedeker, who won the FedEx Cup after winning the season-ending Tour Championship on the US PGA Tour, flirted with the magical 59 but his birdie putt from 18 feet on the last hole slid past the cup.
He settled for a remarkable 60, which is the lowest round ever in a World Golf Championships event, and moved up from equal 38th place to tied seventh.
Westwood came charging through the field with an imperious display of approach play as he birdied five of his first seven holes before rolling in an eight footer at the ninth to turn in 30.
He drained a 30 footer for birdie at the 14th – playing partner Ian Poulter sank his approach from a fairway bunker for eagle at the same hole – and continued to putt well as he added further gains at the 15th, 16th and 17th.
“As the week's gone on, and we've played it and walked it more, I started to sort of get a feel for the golf course more and sort of see the lower scores around it,” said Westwood.
“I played very solidly, got off to a nice start, birdied the first three holes and kept ticking over, birdieing the odd hole and finished strongly. I hit it good, hit it in the fairway, hit it close, and made a couple of 20 footers which has been missing.”
Making a record 41st appearance at a World Golf Championship event, Westwood has another chance to try to record a first WGC victory.
“It does surprise me I've played more than anyone else,” said the 39-year-old, who has finished second three times at WGC events, most recently to Francesco Molinari in this event two years ago.
“I didn't realise I was that old! I know I've played a lot but I’ve never won one.”
Oosthuizen had to wait four holes for his first birdie of the day, and followed it with a three-putt bogey at the fifth before a gain at the long seventh. The Masters Tournament runner-up had further birdies at the par fives on the back nine – the 11th and 15th – but dropped a shot at the 12th in a round he described afterwards as “frustrating”.
He added: “Early I didn't play really well and then started to find a little bit of form on the back nine, but just didn't make any putts. Knowing all the birdies that were out there, you look at the leaderboard, but I'm still in a good position for going into tomorrow.
“I still gave myself birdie opportunities, just normal ones and the ones I hit really close I just didn't make. So the putter went cold on me today, but I still hit good putts which is very frustrating.”
Snedeker wasn’t too disappointed to miss the 59 as he tied the Asian Tour’s low 18-hole record. “You don't get a chance to shoot 59 too often, maybe a couple times in your career and to do in a World Golf Championships event is special. I played great today, made a lot of putts.  Can't be too disappointed with how I played today, but you always want to make that last one,” he said.

JAY HAAS HAS A 10-UNDER 60 TO GO FIVE CLEAR IN US SENIORS FINALE

FROM THE US CHAMPIONS TOUR WEBSITE
SCOTTSDALE, Arizona (AP) -- Taking advantage of perfect conditions and a relaxed pairing with close friend Fred Couples, Jay Haas matched the Champions Tour record with a 10-under 60 to open a five-stroke lead Friday in the Charles Schwab Cup Championship.
The 58-year-old Haas made a 5ft birdie putt on the par-5 18th after hitting his second shot into a greenside bunker and leaving his eagle blast short. "It was just a very magical day for me," Haas said. "I had a great pairing. I love playing with Freddie. ... It was a wonderful day. One of those that you don't want to end."
Haas became the eighth player in the history of the 50-and-over tour to shoot 60, and the first since Nick Price last year in the Toshiba Classic.
"I can't remember another time that I've had a chance to shoot a 59," Haas said. "I was thinking about it without question. I hit a decent bunker shot. It stopped a little quicker for me than I thought."
Haas also broke the course record on Desert Mountain's Cochise layout, closing with a 7-under 28 on the back nine to finish a stroke off the tour's nine-hole record.
Tom Lehman was second in the season-ending event after a 63, moving into position to win the Charles Schwab Cup points race. Bernhard Langer, 211 points ahead of second-place Lehman, was tied for fifth at 6 under after a 65.
Couples was third at 8 under after a 66.
"Wow! What a round he had," Couples said about Haas. "I had a good time, 4-under par. I'm not going to complain, but when a guy is shooting 10 under it seems like you're shooting 80."
Haas is 14 under after two days in perfect conditions on the mountainside course. The nine-time PGA TOUR winner won the Principal Charity Classic in Iowa in June for his 16th victory on the senior tour.
"The course is magnificent," Haas said. "The fairways are like carpets. The greens are perfect. So, if you hit a poor shot, it's my fault."
After making three birdies on the front nine to take the lead at 7 under, Haas chipped in for birdie from 35 feet on the par-4 10th after his 8-iron approach landed on the false front and spun off into the rough.
That was the only green he missed in regulation, and gave him a chance to test his work Monday with noted short-game instructor Stan Utley.
"I spent about an hour with Stan Utley up here at Grayhawk and he gave me some tips," Haas said. "I told him I was chipping really poorly, and he gave me some things to think about. ... I certainly have to applaud Stan for that."
He also birdied the next three holes, holing a 7-foot putt on No. 11 and 15-footers on 12 and 13.
"I kind of should have known my day was going really well because I thought I pushed the putt on 11," he said. "I started walking and I misread it. It broke a lot more than I thought and it caught the high edge and went into the hole."
Haas missed an 8-foot birdie try on the par-4 14th and settled for a birdie on the par-5 15th after missing a 9-foot eagle putt.
"Fifteen was the break of the day, really," Haas said. "I had too much club in my hand with 21-degree hybrid. Hit it in the neck just a little bit, and it hit just short and kicked up. ... I didn't hit it the way I wanted to, but it turned out nicely."
He parred the par-4 16th after a 117-yard wedge shot that came up 20 feet short and right, then hit a 5-iron to 8 feet to set up a birdie on the par-3 17th.
Couples is playing for the first time since a back injury forced him to withdraw during the first round of the Boeing Classic outside Seattle in late August. Before this week, he hadn't completed a competitive round since winning the Senior British Open in July for his second victory of the year.
"I'm excited to be out here playing," Couples said.
Lehman's 63 was his lowest round on the Champions Tour.
"I was extremely pleased with my play today," Lehman said. "As disappointed as I was with my finish yesterday, it was just the opposite today."
Langer and Lehman would win the season title with a victory, while third-placed Roger Chapman (69-70 for 139) needs a victory and some help to top the standings.
The tournament winner will get 880 points, with players receiving a point for every $500 they earn in the $2.5 million event.
Langer won the points title in 2010, and Lehman won last year.
"We're out there to do the best we can and at the end of the day we'll find out what happens," Langer said.
Chapman was tied for 21st in the 30-man field at 1 under after a 70.
Jay Don Blake, the defending champion and first-round leader, followed his opening 64 with a 71 to drop into a tie for eighth at 5 under. Blake won last year at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco.

JAMES BYRNE HAS TOP TEN FINISH ON ASIAN DEVELOPMENTAL TOUR

BY COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com

Banchory's James Byrne produced his best performance since winning the Northern Open at Meldrum House at the end of August when he finished ninth in the $80,000 PGM Eastwood Valley Masters, an Asian Developmental Tour event, at Eastwood Valley Golf and Country Club, Miri, Malaysia today.
The 2011 Walker Cup player and former British amateur chamionship finalist had scores of 74, 70, 70 and 71 for a three-under-par total of 285.
Byrne finished 11 shots behind the winner of the $14,000 first prize, Jay Bayron of the Philippines who was winning on the tour for a third time.

  REPORT FROM THE ASIAN TOUR
Miri, Malaysia, November 3: Jay Bayron of the Philippines won his third Asian Development Tour (ADT) title by defeating Hsu Mong-nan of Chinese Taipei and Malaysian Nicholas Fung by one-shot at the $80,000 PGM Eastwood Valley Masters on Saturday.
Bayron, who started the final round with a three-shot lead, carded an even-par 72 to win his second ADT title of the season, which propelled him to the top of the Order of Merit.
Hsu and Fung made a final round charge of 70 and 68 respectively but had to settle for tied second at the US$80,000 ADT event staged at the Eastwood Valley Golf and Country Club.
Bayron was delighted to overcome the pressure from Hsu and Fung as he held on to his overnight lead with three birdies against as many bogeys.
“I felt the pressure throughout the round. I came from behind to win in Indonesia so to be leading going into the last day was different for me,” said Bayron, who totalled 11-under-par 277 and won US$14,000.
The Filipino is now a step closer to securing a 2013 Asian Tour card as the top three players on the Order of Merit will earn playing rights on the region’s established Tour.
“I knew how important this win would mean to me and my rankings on the Order of Merit. It isn’t easy to finish in the top three of the Merit list but I know that it is even more stressful trying to earn your Asian Tour card in Qualifying School.
“This win means a lot to me. I’m happy I won and now I’m quite confident of staying inside the safety zone. I just need a good result in Chinese Taipei (Yeangder ADT, which is the last event of the season) to cement my position,” said Bayron.
After his birdie on the fourth hole, Hsu played par golf and needed a final push to secure his first ADT win. He was rewarded with a birdie on 15 but his title hopes was dashed when he ended his campaign with a bogey and birdie finish.
“I’m happy with how I finished. This is my second runner-up result on the ADT and I feel that I’m coming closer to a victory,” said Hsu, who has played on the Asian Tour since 1997
Fung was aiming for a third straight victory after winning in Indonesia and Malaysia in the past two weeks but took pride in his battling performance. He said the result will prepare him for the Barclays Singapore Open next week and the Asian Tour Qualifying School in Thailand in 2013.
“I’m very happy with how I played because I was bogey free. I’ve learned a lot about my game and I’m feeling very confident. Hopefully I can continue in Singapore next week then my ultimate goal will be to earn an Asian Tour card next year,” said the Sabahan.
The ADT has grown from five events since its inauguration in 2010 and has expanded to a record of 13 events this year. The ADT will also be afforded with Official World Golf Ranking status in 2013 which is a huge boost for the development of the game in Asia.
