"I shot 70 level par today which was ok as it was pretty windy with strong gusts making club selection pretty tough. Terry Mathieson shot a very good 65 with Greg McBain and Jordan Findlay shooting very good 67s.
"I havn't played much golf the past week so looking forward to getting two more rounds under my belt before next week.
"Huge thanks to Aberdeen Asset Management, Hunting, Saltire Energy, Marcliffe Hotel and Spa, Farmfoods and Simmons for their sponsorship this week"

FIRST DAY SUMMARY FROM BIELDSIDE

One time leading North-east amateur Terry Mathieson, now a tour pro attached to Murcar Links, returned to one of his happy hunting grounds in his pre-pro days, to lead the field with a five-under-par 65 in the first round of the Paul Lawrie Invitational 54-hole tournament at Deeside Golf Club's Bieldside course on the western suburbs of Aberdeen.
Terry made his score with a bogey-free outward half of four-under 32 with birdies at the short first, long sixth, seventh and eighth.
That was good scoring on a blustery day and he had another purple patch sandwiched between his only bogeys, at the 10th and long 18th
Mathieson birdied the 11th, long 13th and 15th, coming home in one-under-par 33 for a useful two-shot lead in a three-round event over the parkland course on the banks of the River Dee.
Joint second overnight are another Aberdonian, Greg McBain (Gamola Golf) and twice past British boys championship finalist (he won one of them) Jordan Findlay (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre) whose only win of note in his pro career so far was the Scottish Alliance championship a couple of years ago.
McBain, who has been making steady progress up the Tartan rankings all season, had one of the best finishes of the opening day. He was three under par for the last four holes with a birdie at the 15th and an eagle 2 at the par-4 17th.
Findlay had a bag of five birdies.
Paul Lawrie not only dreamed up the concept of this tournament, which is played only two drivers and a long iron from his Bieldside home, he raises the sponsorship money for it as well;

 And he is an honorary member of Deeside Golf Club. Add to that he fact that he will be back in the Ryder Cup spotlight the week after next, and you get an idea of why Paul is the North-east of Scotland golf's favourite son (Yes, he was the man who should have carried the Olympic Torch through Aberdeen!)
