SCOTT HENRY SHARES LEAD, DAVID LAW MISSES CUT

by NEIL AHERN
CHALLENGE TOUR PRESS OFFICER

Peter Uihlein maintained his place at the top of the leaderboard after the second day of the Kazakhstan Open, alongside co-leaders Scott Henry and Alexander Levy, as the American carded a two under par 70 at Zhailjau Golf Resort in Almaty.
The former World Amateur Number One was the overnight leader after a superb nine under par opening round of 63 but his second day got off to a disappointing start as a bogey at the second hole knocked him back to eight under par, three shots off the clubhouse lead set by Frenchman Levy.
But Uihlein showed true grit as he battled back with consecutive birdies at the eighth and ninth holes.
Two more birdies at the 13th and 14th holes moved him into the outright lead on 12 under par at Zhailjau Golf Resort but he had a disappointing finish as his second shot from the bunker at the 458 yard par four last found the water to the left of the green, resulting in a bogey.
While he was not happy with his finish, the in-form 23 year old is hoping that it will prove his worst round of the week as he chases his first title as a professional.
“I didn’t hit my short irons particularly well today,” said the former US Amateur Champion. “I pulled it on the second for my bogey. I had chances after that and didn’t take them but I drove the ball well so I gave myself opportunities. I just didn’t hit it close enough today.
“On a course like this there are a lot of birdies, you just have to stay patient. I knew I was going to have a lot of wedges and I started hitting it a little bit better towards the end but I wasn’t as sharp as yesterday.
“I caught my wedge heavy from the bunker on the 18th and it went in the water. In a four round tournament where you’re going to have a lot of birdies, you might have a round where it’s a bit flat and I'm hoping today was my flat round for the week.
“If I keep driving the ball well I think I’ll keep having chances and I’ll just work on my wedges tomorrow and be ready to go. I got myself in contention again and hopefully I can put together two good rounds and see how it goes.”
All three of the leaders at the Challenge Tour’s ‘Major’ are chasing their first wins and Levy is a player who has emerged from off the radar, his only top five this season coming at the Fred Olsen Challenge de España in June, where he was third.
It was a rollercoaster round for the 22 year old as he opened with a birdie and followed that with another at the third. Back to back bogeys at the fourth and fifth, however, took him back to level par before a superb run of three birdies in four holes took him through the turn in three under par.
A double-bogey at the par four 11th hole looked to have put a dampener on his day, but once again he bounced superbly by bettering his front nine feat as he birdied four of the final five holes with a par sandwiched in between at the 17th.
Henry is also vying for the biggest win of his career after the Glaswegian’s five under par round of 67 moved him into the tied lead, after starting the day three shots off the pace set by Uihlein.
The 25 year old once again produced a superb finish to move into contention with two birdies on his final two holes, although not quite as impressive as the eagle-eagle finish of the opening day.
HP Bacher of Austria and Englishman Seve Benson were a shot further back on ten under par in a crowded leaderboard, with 24 players all within four shots of the lead.

NOTHING BLAND ABOUT RICHARD'S FINISH

  FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR SITE
Richard Bland birdied the last three holes of his second round to snatch the halfway lead at the BMW Italian Open presented by CartaSi.
The 39 year old Englishman is yet to win on The European Tour despite ten years of trying, but now has a fantastic chance to break his duck at Royal Park I Roveri after a six under par 66 took him to 12 under in Turin.
That is one stroke ahead of France’s Grégory Bourdy, Spaniard Gonzalo Fernandez-Castaño, South Africa’s Garth Mulroy and Scot Marc Warren.
As well as trying to secure a first title, Bland is also in need of a good week to retain his place on The European Tour for 2013. He currently lies 126th on The Race to Dubai, with only the top 115 keeping their cards.
"I've had a tough couple of years, but that's behind me now and I'm just trying to move forward and improve every day,” said Bland, who had to return to Qualifying School last season after failing to keep his card.
“When it wasn't going my way on the front nine, I didn't panic. I knew there were chances out there and it was just a question of waiting. I don't go for the panic button which I might've done five or six years ago.

"There's still 36 holes to go - all it is right now is a great position. There are great players behind me, it's low scoring, so two 70s isn't going to get it done.

“I'll probably have to shoot ten under from here, but that's a good thing. You've got to keep making birdies, you have to keep your foot on the accelerator."

Having birdied the first Bland could have become frustrated on a day of low scoring when he parred the next nine, but after gains at the 11th and 14th an approach to six feet at the 16th sparked his tremendous finish.

"It was a strange day because I birdied the first then struggled to get anything going,” he added. “I missed a couple of chances and struggled to get the pace of the greens.

"But I holed a nice putt at the 14th for birdie, then hit a couple of shots really close at the 16th and 17th, then hit two great shots at the 18th. It all happened at once really.

"You'd expect in a 66 that you'd hit a lot of really good shots, but I'm hitting a lot of okay shots. I'm not putting myself in any problems, which is great, but on this course you have a lot of short irons and you feel like you should be hitting it close all the time.

"I'm leading and I'm not going to complain, but I feel there's a lot of room of improvement. When you don't feel like you've got your A-game and you're 12 under and leading, it's fantastic. If I can get my swing clicked into place, it should be a good weekend.”
Fernandez-Castaño admitted the advice of Ryder Cup Captain José María Olazábal had helped his putting in a round of 65.
"Olly (Olazabal) helped me with my putting two years ago, when he recommended that I putt with my feet together,” said the five-time European Tour winner. “Last year I had another tip from a fellow Spaniard, telling me to use the claw grip, and it has made a massive difference.
“I've been working with psychologists too, but it's not until you see the ball rolling into the hole on a regular basis that your confident levels go up and you believe you can putt."
Bourdy’s eight birdie 64 was the best round of the day, while Mulroy and Warren carded 67 and 65 respectively.
England’s Richard McEvoy holds solo possession of sixth on ten under, with overnight leader Joel Sjöholm part of a seven-way tie for seventh after a 71.
Martin Kaymer is the best-placed of the three Ryder Cup players in the field after a 66 left him eight under, one ahead of Francesco Molinari and two clear of Nicolas Colsaerts.
Meanwhile Olazábal made the cut on the mark at four under, as did defending champion Robert Rock.

E-mail from Ian Kerr

Colin, Thought you may be interested in the undernoted article re our achievement in providing 2 out of 6 for the Gents and Ladies upcoming world amateur golf championships.
We are proud of Matt, Eilidh and Megan Briggs’ achievements, as well as the past international and national honours of our other members, Andy Farmer and Colin Christy. Andy Farmer. as well as being 8 times Club Champion at Kilmacolm, also is current Club Champion at Western Gailes, Renfrewshire County Strokeplay Champion and Winner of Renfrewshire Golf Union’s Order of Merit for 2012 (2nd time in 3 years).
Not bad for a small village club in Renfrewshire, I’m sure you will agree.

Ian Kerr
Immediate Past Captain
Kilmacolm Golf Club

KILMACOLM COMPETING WITH
THE BEST OF THEM

A small Scots village golf club with a unique record is again punching way above it 500-member weight...
For two of Kilmacolm's young talented players are creating a first-ever European, and perhaps World, golf double.
Eilidh Briggs, 19, and Matthew Clark, 30, are two of only six players representing Scotland in the upcoming World Amateur Golf Championships for Gents and Ladies to be held in Turkey later this month and early October.
And Eilidh helping to carry the torch for the modest Renfrewshire club is appropriate as her name is Gaelic for "Torch"...
It also means that the club, tucked away up on the moorlands and described as "a miniature Gleneagles", now has no fewer than three Scottish internationalists - the third, keeping it in the family, being Eilidh's 22 year old sister Megan, former Scottish champion.
Eilidh is first into the fray as part of a 3 woman team to capture the Women’s World Team Championship, the Espirito Santo Trophy, for Scotland in Turkey from 27-30 September.
It crowns an excellent 2012 season for Eilidh, of Lochwinnoch, in her second year of sports studies at Stirling University,  following her first international call up last year. She is the current West of Scotland Ladies Champion, Scottish Universities Champion and lies 3rd in the SLGA Order of Merit.
Last year among many titles she was Scottish Champion of Champions, Scottish Girl Champion, and West of Scotland Ladies Champion.
She said yesterday: "I am really so excited about this Turkish clash. I'm a bit nervous but it is going to be a great experience. "
Matt Clark is hoping to repeat his sparkling form recently when he joins the other two Scots  to contest the Eisenhower Trophy in Turkey from 4th to 7th October.
He got his first International Cap this year in the victorious Scottish team that won the Home Internationals at Glasgow Gailes, and leads the standings in overall scoring average in Scotland. He has won the Newlands Trophy and posted four other top-four finishes domestically, while finishing tied eighth at the European Amateur Championship over the demanding Carton House layout in Dublin.
But the Kilmacolm club also boasts two previous internationalists, club champion Andrew Farmer, and vice-captain Colin Christy.
In 2010 it also uniquely had two 'bosses' of golf and religion as members - Colin Brown was the Captain of the R&A, and the Rev. Bill Hewitt was the Moderator of the Church of Scotland!
Club Captain Sandy Greenhorn commented: "It's quite fantastic for a village club with a smallish membership to have the honour of having three members who are Scottish internationalists.
" We all wish Eilidh and Matt all the best in Turkey for Scotland - and Kilmacolm."

DUNCAN STEWART HEADS FOR CHALLENGE TOUR

Highlander Duncan Stewart secured his 2013 Challenge Tour card with a second successive PGA EuroPro Tour victory, winning the Sweetspot Masters with a 54-hole score of 17 under par.
The Grantown on Spey man won his second £10,000 prize of the season and his third over the past two years by eight strokes from runners-up Billy Fowles (Wentworth) and Dale Whitnell (Five Lakes) at Hunley Hotel and Golf Club after signing for a final-round 69 (four under par) after a testing day on the windy North Yorkshire coast.
Stewart can expect a congratulatory E-mail from Inverness-born but US-based Russell Knox, now a US PGA Tour player but a member of the Jacksonville University golf team for four years alongside Stewart.

The Scot got off to a perfect start with a birdie three at the first and gained another shot at the fifth. A bogey at six was only a brief setback, with a birdie at eight making amends. Back-to-back birdies at 12 and 13 improved his score further. A bogey at 14 never looked like costing him and he added a final birdie at the 16th.
Upon sinking his final putt Stewart's 'Team Scotland' teammates drenched their compatriot in champagne to celebrate his success. His second consecutive £10,000 winner's cheque assures Stewart a top five finish on this season's Order of Merit and with it a place on the 2013 Challenge Tour, one tier below the European Tour.
"To get the Challenge Tour card is massive," he said afterwards. "It is what you are working towards all season so to be one of the five who achieve it is superb.
"My putting was outstanding this week. I got some momentum going on the first but there was a lot of scrambling out there because of the winds.
"I would rather play in flat, calm and sunny conditions every day but you cannot help the weather and it becomes about how you go around the course and deal with the conditions."
The top 60 in the current Order of Merit will be invited to Tour Championships, which take place at Woburn Golf Club in November.

SJOHOLM LEADS ITALIAN OPEN AFTER MISSING TWO CUTS

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Joel Sjöholm put two missed cuts behind him to lead after the first round of the BMW Italian Open presented by CartaSi.
The Swede missed the weekend by a single shot in both Switzerland and The Netherlands the last two weeks, but rather than scrapping for survival on Friday he will resume with a one shot lead.
An eight under par 64 gave the 27 year old that advantage - even though Sjöholm felt he could have played better.
“I want revenge,” he said. “The last two weeks I actually played quite good golf.
“Normally when I score well, I have to putt well. The last few weeks I've putted quite poorly and missed the cut by one stroke. Both times I felt like I had a good chance to make the cut, but you have to forget and keep moving on.
“I hit it basically everywhere. I was in the woods a lot and made some funny birdies today. It was a big, fighting 64 rather than a solid 64, but it's great fun to be eight under.”
Sjöholm’s first encounter with the trees at Royal Park I Roveri came at the third after a mis-cued three wood off the tree, but after threading his approach he holed a putt from the fringe for birdie.
He repeated the trick at the 13th, this time the putt dropping from 20 feet, en route to accumulating eight birdies in a blemish-free round.
“I know that I have to play better golf tomorrow; I'm not going to make these sort of birdies four rounds in a row,” he added.

England’s Lee Slattery picked up three shots in his last four holes to snatch second late in the day on seven under, while France’s Victor Dubuisson, South Africans Keith Horne and Garth Mulroy, Northern Ireland’s Gareth Maybin and English trio Richard Bland, David Howell and Richard McEvoy all shot rounds off 66 to form a seven-way tie for third.
"It's a place I always play well for some reason,” said Slattery. “I think I've had two 65s round here before. Last week in Holland, although it's a great golf course, I tend to struggle on it, whereas this week I can see the shots. It's nice to open the shoulders a little bit, which you can do here because the rough is not thick.”
Bland and McEvoy both lie outside the top 115 that will retain their cards on The Race to Dubai, so were pleased to enhance their chances of returning to The European Tour next season.
“My game has been solid, but I've been unhappy a lot this season,” said McEvoy. “I started seeing a new coach a couple of months ago - Jonathan Yarwood - and the work we've been doing has been going really well. But I haven't shot a round of five or six under for a while, so it's pleasing to do it today.
“I haven't been hitting the ball close enough to make many birdies, and I haven't been confident enough with my swing to go at pins. That's been the main reason, but now I'm feeling a lot better with my swing and my game.”
Bland added: “At times this season I've felt l like I've played really good golf and got nothing for it, missed the cut even."
Defending champion Robert Rock opened with a two under par 70, while Francesco Molinari’s 68 was the best score of those heading to The Ryder Cup in a fortnight’s time.
The 2006 winner of this event was two shots better than German Martin Kaymer and Captain José María Olazábal, while Nicolas Colsaerts was a shot further back on one under.
"It's fun playing in front of the home crowd, but there's a lot of pressure and everyone wants you to do well,” said Molinari. “It would be nice to give them a nice week, but it's quite tough.
"It was nice to spend some time together [with Nicolas Colsaerts and Martin Kaymer] and I'm sure we'll have a lot of fun in America as well. We talked a little about a few things, but not too much."
