DAVIS LOVE III NAMES FOUR RYDER CUP WILDCARDS

FROM THE BBC SPORTS.COM WEBSITE
United States captain Davis Love III has named Dustin Johnson, Jim Furyk, Brandt Snedeker and Steve Stricker as his four Ryder Cup wildcards.
Furyk, 42, will be playing in his eighth Ryder Cup while Stricker, 45, has played twice and Johnson, 28, once. Snedeker, 33, will make his debut.
"There's four great players we have picked that bring a lot to the team, but it was a tough call," Love said.

US Ryder Cup wildcards

Dustin Johnson (age 28)
World ranking: 14
Ryder Cups: 1 (1 point won, 4 lost)
2012 earnings : $2,910,060 (1 PGA Tour win)

Jim Furyk (age 42)
World ranking: 30
Ryder Cups: 7 (10½-17½)
2012 earnings: $2,847,805 (0 PGA Tour wins)

Brandt Snedeker (age 32)
World ranking : 18

2012 earnings: $3,512,939 (1 PGA Tour win)

Steve Stricker (age 45)
World ranking: 10
Ryder Cups : 2 (3½-3½)
2012 earnings: $3,210,021 (1 PGA Tour win)

The US play holders Europe at Medinah near Chicago from 28-30 September.
Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson spearhead the American challenge, with Bubba Watson, Jason Dufner, Keegan Bradley, Webb Simpson, Zach Johnson and Matt Kuchar the other automatic qualifiers.
Hunter Mahan, Rickie Fowler and Nick Watney were in contention for wildcard places but missed out.
Love said he chose Stricker and Furyk to add some experience to a team which has four Ryder Cup rookies.
"We needed experience, Jim is one of the most consistent players on the tour and one of the most respected," said the captain.
"Stricker has been the best player in my mind on tour the last five or six years. He's another guy that pairs well with anybody and another great putter, and he's somebody I really trust on and off the course - he's been a great asset to me already getting prepared for this day."
Stricker is regarded as an ideal partner for 14-time major winner Woods, while Furyk, whose first Ryder Cup was in 1997, is considered compatible with anyone.
Furyk said: "I've had the opportunity to play in quite a few Ryder Cups but Davis has been a good friend, someone we all respect and look up to.
"It'll be fun playing for one of the guys that I've played a lot of years on the PGA Tour with. I'm looking forward to it, I couldn't be more excited."
Stricker added: "It's a tremendous lot of fun trying to get that one common goal and win that cup back. It's what we're all appearing for and I'm looking forward to it."
The 48-year-old Love, who played on six Ryder Cup teams from 1993-2004, will have four assistant captains in Fred Couples, Mike Hulbert, Scott Verplank and Jeff Sluman.
Love's European counterpart Jose Maria Olazabal chose England's Ian Poulter and Belgium's Nicolas Colsaerts as his two wildcard picks.
The 10 players who qualified by right for the European team were Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose, Graeme McDowell, Paul Lawrie, Francesco Molinari, Luke Donald, Lee Westwood, Sergio Garcia, Peter Hanson and Martin Kaymer.
Europe have beaten the United States in four of the past five competitions.

McCREADIE FAILS TO BREAK 100 AT SKIBO

Twice Northern Open champion Jason McCreadie ran up an astonishing score of 102 - 31 over par - in a gale-force wind that threatened to wreck the first round of the 36-hole Carnegie Invitational over the Skibo Castle course near Dornoch today McCreadie, who led for a spell in last week's Aberdeen Asset Management Northern Open, coped well for half the round, reaching the turn in only three-over-par 38.
Then the roof fell in, metaphorically.
The Buchanan Castle tour pro took 64 blows for the second nine, including a 10 at the par-4 11th, another 10 at the par-4 12th, a 12 at the par-5 15th, and an 8 at the par-4 17th.
Jason was not alone in trials and tribulations.
Even the bang-in-form Paul Lawrie had a four-over-par 75 which led for most of the day. Paul had a triple bogey 7 at the 16th and double bogeys at the short fourth and also the 11th. He had only one birdie.
Then along came former Northern Open champion Gordon Law, almost the last man to finish, and he took the lead with a three-over 74.
Birdie 2s at the sixth and 15th were the backbone of his score but, unlike most of his rivals, he had no double bogeys on his card.
Third placed Stephen Gray (Hayston) had a 76 which included a 7 and only one birdie.

PGA of Scotland supremo Michael MacDougall said later: "It was borderline unplayable. We positioned the flags in the least exposed parts of the greens and the greenkeeping staff did not cut the greens this morning so that the balls would hold on the greens.
"But there was some movement and, as I say, it was borderline unplayable. Jason McCreadie has a hip and back injury which contributed to his high score."

FORTROSE AND ROSEMARKIE SHOW THE WAY WITH 70 NEW MEMBERS

NEWS RELEASE FROM SCOTTISH GOLF UNION

Highland links golf club Fortrose and Rosemarkie are celebrating the success of their recent membership campaign, adding over 70 new recruits to prove clubs in Scotland can attract new members through effective marketing in these difficult economic times.
Thanks to a structured marketing plan, including an Open Evening at the end of June, Fortrose and Rosemarkie Golf Club have added 75 new members with further enquiries coming in on a daily basis.
Indeed, new members have been attracted from as far afield as the United States, Switzerland and England, with an enquiry only last week coming in from Canada. Resultantly, the club, a classic Scottish links course located on the Chanonry Peninsula in the ‘Black Isle’ with breathtaking views over the Moray Firth, has increased its total membership to 834.
For a limited period only between June and August, the club waived their joining fee, allowing golfers to become a member for just £275 for the remainder of the 2012 season. Country/overseas membership (anyone living 50 miles out with the club) was offered at £175, with junior membership £30 and social membership £20.
While budgets remain tight for the vast majority of golf clubs, Fortrose and Rosemarkie agreed to invest funds in an organised campaign. Distributing glossy flyers in the area via a local supplier and advertising their Open Evening on the official SGU website and other online sites, the club spread their net far and wide.
The Open Evening at Fortrose also allowed potential members the chance to sample the facilities and experience a warm welcome with a free welcome drink and complimentary canapés. They could also talk to Committee members and the Club Secretary to have any questions answered.
Whilst practice facilities at the club are fantastic with a 300-yard long practice area, driving bays, practice nets, practice bunkers, short game practice area (with green) the real ‘gem’ is the course itself. Situated amid stunning scenery just 15 miles north east of Inverness, the course was re-designed by the five times Open Champion James Braid in 1932.
Next year is the 125th anniversary of the club and such is the popularity of the course that Fortrose and Rosemarkie will host three national tournaments next year, including the Loretto Scottish Boys and Girls Under-14 Championship from the 11 – 12 August.
The Club also has reciprocal agreements in place for all playing members, featuring discounts at Royal Dornoch, Brora, Moray, Nairn Dunbar, Golspie, Tain, Inverness and Forres. This entitles each playing member to play up to three rounds of golf at these other courses at considerably reduced rates just by being a member of Fortrose and Rosemarkie Golf Club.
Each member also receives a membership loyalty card which entitles them to a 10% discount off all products purchased in the bar, shop or for any catering at the club.
Mike MacDonald, Club Secretary at Fortrose and Rosemarkie, said: “We’ve had great success with our membership campaign. The best kind of advertising is quality.
“With the uniqueness of the course and setting not really found anywhere else, in addition to the course condition and facilities on offer we feel we have that quality in abundance for any new prospective members wishing to join a links course with year round playability.”
Reflecting on the membership figures, MacDonald added: “We have now increased the membership by 75 bringing the total membership to 834.  Further enquiries are coming in to me all the time which is a sure sign the product we are offering is a good one. We’ve also had new members who have recently joined from the United States.

“The reciprocal agreements we have with other courses in the area are certainly an added bonus for new members so it gives something back to them too and there is no doubt it’s a big plus for overseas members, especially.

We are such a unique Scottish links golf course and despite the economic downturn more visitors are coming to visit the course. Being so close to both Royal Dornoch Golf Club and Castle Stuart Golf Links, we are certainly worth a visit as we really do offer true value for money and our popularity and status is growing with the Club hosting three national tournaments in 2013 in what will be the Club’s 125th anniversary.

“Thanks to all involved for helping our club prosper through this campaign, including the support from the Scottish Golf Union.”

Ross Duncan, Marketing and Sponsorship Manager for the Scottish Golf Union, praised the work being done by the Highlands club. “We are delighted to see the efforts of Mike and his team at Fortrose and Rosemarkie being rewarded with a significant increase in membership,” Duncan said.

“This highlights that a proactive approach to marketing can help attract new members and provides a great example to other clubs looking to implement their own marketing campaigns.

“The SGU and SLGA continue to support clubs in this area and we invested increased resource in our national membership awareness marketing activity this year to highlight the benefits of being a golf club member to an even wider audience.”
