CHALLENGE TOUR REPORT AND SCORES FROM NORWAY

By Neil Ahern
nahern@europeantour.com
Glasgow's former Scottish amateur champion Andrew McArthur launched himself right into contention at the Norwegian Challenge after he carded a second successive five under par round of 67 to move to within four shots of the lead held by former Ryder Cup player Oliver Wilson.
The  Windyhill player has been on confident form of late, with his best finish of the season coming in Italy six weeks ago while he earned a top 20 in Finland last week, and he continued on that form in Byneset GK, near Trondheim.
McArthur opened with two birdies at the first and second holes before reaching the turn in two under after a birdie at the par five seventh and a bogey at the par four eighth. That proved to be his only dropped shot of the first two rounds, however, and he picked up shots at the 11th, 14th and 17th to move into the race for a second Challenge Tour title.
“It’s been good consistency so far,” said the 33 year old, who has won once before on the Challenge Tour. “I’ve missed two greens in 36 holes so you have to be happy with that.
“I just had to be patient and wait for my chances and I did that so I just need to keep that up. Confidence is high but that can evaporate quickly on this tour. Since my first round in Italy I have been playing well and I managed to keep that going.
“It’s a lot more fun to be playing well and seeing myself up there on the leaderboard because I haven’t been shooting too many good scores this year. I've really been working hard and doing everything right but for some reason it just wasn’t happening for me. All of a sudden now a few putts are dropping and it feels nice.”
Steve O’Hara joined McArthur on ten under late in the day after he eagled two par fives on the way to another five under par 67 to stay in touch with the top of the leaderboard.
Chris Doak was also in the hunt one shot further back after a six under par 66 moved him to nine under par while Gavin Dear (-5) also made the cut.
Meanwhile, former Ryder Cup player Oliver Wilson carded the lowest round of his professional career as the Englishman’s stunning ten under par 62 moved him into the tied lead, alongside Alvaro Velasco, going into the weekend’s play.
Velasco, who was the overnight leader after the first day, matched his opening round of 65 to move into a two-way tie for the lead on 14 under par but it was his English compatriot who stole the show earlier in the day after a two hour rain delay at Byneset GK, near Trondheim.

CHIP LUTZ RETAINS SENIOR BRITISH OPEN AMATEUR TITLE

NEWS RELEASE FROM THE R AND A
American Chip Lutz became only the third player in history to retain the Seniors Open Amateur title today and he did so in style with his best round of the week at Machynys Peninsula in Wales.
Lutz follows the legendary Charlie Green and Ron White as back-to-back winners and earns a place at the 2013 Senior Open Championship at Royal Birkdale and this year's US Senior Amateur Championship.
The 57-year-old from Pennsylvania, the runner-up two years ago and winner at Royal Portrush last summer, overcame a one-stroke deficit to claim to a four-stroke victory with his best performance of the week.
Lutz, who won the Silver Medal as top amateur at the recent Senior Open at Turnberry, posted a closing four-under par 68 for a 54-hole aggregate of 211, on five-under par, to finish ahead of fellow countrymen Douglas Pool, Steve Rogers and three-time winner Paul Simson.
Pool, from Las Vegas, was presented with the Silver Medal as the runner-up by virtue of his last round score.
Steadiness won the day for Lutz as he carded level halves of 34, had just one bogey, on the fourth, and collected five birdies, three on the outward half and two on the way home.
Three-time champion Simson went into the final round one stroke clear of the field and led for much of the day but after the turn missed birdie opportunities while Lutz took his and edged clear.
"It feels unreal to have won again. It is a significant achievement as it has not been done for about 20 years and then by Charlie Green who I believe was something special. He won six times in seven years and I certainly have some way to go to catch him up.
“I felt good coming in to the tournament but the standard is so high these days that winning events like this is a tall order and I am just thrilled to have done it and I am really looking forward to Royal Birkdale and The Seniors Open Amateur at Royal Aberdeen next year,” said Lutz.
One of the most impressive achievements was that of Pool, a 61-year-old former Casino operator, who almost pulled out of the event because of excruciating back pain. He shot a splendid 71 to clinch the runner-up spot. "I am really delighted. This is beyond my wildest dreams."
Simson was disappointed with a 73 in his final round. “Just after the turn things went wrong. I bogeyed the 12th and failed to make birdie at the 13th and then Chip put breathing space between us,” said the 61-year-old from North Carolina.
Americans occupied the first five places with Scotland’s Ian Brotherston finishing tied sixth on 217, one-over par.
Former winner Arthur Pierse from Ireland slipped back in the final round scoring 75 for a 219 total and ninth place.
There was some joy for the host country, however, as 68-year-old John Jermine, the Chairman of the Golf Union of Wales, won the over 65’s award with a 54-hole aggregate of 224 to finish in a tie for 25th.
“I am delighted but if my putttoing had been better I could have been closer to the main prizes as I missed many putts of under a yard over the three days,” said Jermine.
Full results and updates can be viewed at RandA.org.
The 2013 Seniors Open Amateur will take place at Royal Aberdeen from August 7 to 9.

GARETH WRIGHT GRABS GLENMUIR VICTORY WITH LAST ROUND OF 65

NEWS RELEASE FROM PGA
Big-hitting Gareth Wright boomed his way to a superb victory in the Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship at De Vere Carden Park.
The West Linton pro's seven-under-par 65 on the last day of the £78,000 championship, supported by Peugeot, proved to hot for his rivals with his 17-under total leaving him four strokes clear of nearest challenger Craig Shave who carded his third 67.

Wright's flawless display, which yielded seven birdies and no bogies, earned him a winner's cheque for £10,000, use of a Peugeot 208 car for a year and booked his place in the end of season Titleist PGA Play-Offs in Turkey where PGA pros compete for a number of European Tour starts.

Steve Parry (North West Golf Academy) surged through the field with a 66 to share third place at 11 under with Stuart Little (Minchinhampton) who carded a 70.

Scottish-based Wright, who represented Wales as an amateur, began the day two shots adrift of leader John Dwyer but as he walked onto the third tee he was two ahead thanks to back-to-back birdies and successive bogeys from the Ashbourne pro.

It set the stone for the rest of the round with Wright overpowering the Nicklaus Course with some brilliant golf while Dwyer slumped to a 76.

"I hit a good tee shot down the first but had a flier with the second and went over the green but chipped in for a dream start," he said.

"I then holed a nice putt on two and just stuck to my game plan all the week. A friend of the family David Bunnell caddied for me and he's been great on the bag and kept me focused.

"But a last round of 65 is the stuff of dreams. I came off yesterday and said to Dave six under would be nice and I beat it by one.

"However that score was on all week, the course is in good condition and we've been blessed by the weather.

"I didn't know how much of a lead I had coming up the last. A couple of clutch pars in the end were crucial. I holed a 20 footer on 11 which was big and kept the momentum going and then on
15 I got the wind wrong but still made par and once I got through 15 I knew there was a couple of birdies coming in."

His win also virtually guarantees him a place in next year's Great Britain & Ireland's PGA Cup team to face America at Slaley Hall and will prompt the Welsh-born pro to weigh up his options.

"I might have to reconsider some things because I was thinking of going to Tour school in a couple of weeks but PGA Cup was one of my goals," he added.
Whetstone pro Shave headed back to the Midlands rueing a third round 74 but still took plenty of positives away with his performance also securing his spot in the PGA Play-Offs.

"I got off to a good start, missed four within 10 feet on the front nine and holed a few undee," he said.

"I had a target in mind (14 under) but 17 under is a great effort by Gareth.

"Hopefully this can be the turning point for my season, I've been practicing and working hard but not getting the res28ults but this week it has all come together."

£10,000 EUROPRO TOUR WINNER'S PRIZE FOR WALLACE BOOTH

Wallace Booth from Comrie,Pertshire moved to second in the 888poker.com PGA EuroPro Tour Order of Merit after registering his first win of the season in the MarHall.com Scottish Classic today.
The £10,000 first prize was his best since he turned pro after a stellar amateur career only to be handicapped by a shoulder injury which saw him "lose" most of last season.
Now Wallace has followed in the footsteps of younger sister Carly as a pro tourney winner this year.
With the lead changing hands constantly, and seven golfers in close contention throughout the final round, it was one of the closest finishes of the campaign. Booth, who shot a four-under-par 66 in the final round, concluded the 54-hole event 11 under par to win by two strokes, with Paul Maddy, Daniel Wardrop and Order of Merit leader Stuart Manley tied for second.
Booth (Comrie Golf Club) had been one shot off the lead after 36 holes but bogeyed the fourth and couldn’t find a birdie on the front nine, leaving him three shots behind at the halfway point of his round.
He replied, though, with three consecutive birdies from the tenth and a fourth at 15 took him to the top of the leaderboard on 10 under. Coming down the 18th Booth had the advantage of being in the final group and knew he needed to avoid error while also matching what playing-partner Wardrop (Didsbury Golf Club) did.
The overnight leader from Manchester had slipped down the leaderboard after bogeys at one and two, though a birdie at the seventh kept him close. He gained further shots at 14 and 15 to stay in touch but was unable to better Booth’s 18th-hole birdie and he finished with a par to tie for second on nine under.
Manley (Machynys Peninsula), victor at Rowallan Castle last week, enjoyed a faultless final round which included five birdies, but his 65 was only enough to share second place with Wardrop and Maddy (Gog Mgog), who made birdies at seven, nine and 10 and an eagle at 15 to sign for a final-round 65.
Martin LeMesurier (South Winchester Golf Club) had been two shots clear as he began his back nine thanks to birdies at one, seven and eight but a run of six straight pars ended with a bogey at 15 and the Hampshire golfer signed for a two-under-par 68 to end the week eight under. He tied for fifth alongside James Scade (Ingrebourne Links) and South African Darryn Lloyd (Acrabuold Ltd).
“I looked at the leaderboards and knew where I stood but I didn’t allow that to bother me,” said Booth after his win. “I was three behind at one point but I just relaxed and played my golf. I had missed my last three cuts and I had a chat with my coach so he told me to relax because I was just trying too hard.
“My caddy kept me in a good frame of mind on the last round and I didn’t put too much pressure on myself. On the 18th I knew I needed to match Wardrop with a par or better and I managed to hit a really good second shot in to about five feet below the flag. He had a 20-footer for birdie and left it just short so I knew I had two putts and that helped relax me a little bit.”

D J RUSSELL WINS FARMFOODS BRITISH PAR 3 CHAMPIONSHIP

NEWS RELEASE FROM THE PGAD J Russell returned to his roots to take the honours at the Farmfoods British Par 3 Championship with back-to-back rounds of 50 for a record eight-under par total at Nailcote Hall near Solihull.
A regular on the Seniors Tour and a two-time winner on the European Tour, he used his vast experience to pull clear of the chasing pack that included Gary Boyd, overnight leader Simon Lilly and former Amateur Champion Gary Wolstenholme – picking up a cheque for £15,000 in the process.
Russell, who grew up in Birmingham, was three shots behind Lilly at the start of the day. But after dropping shots early on, he finished in style with birdies at the 14th, 15th and 17th.
“Yesterday was a little easier as you are not having to win the event on the opening day,” Russell admitted. “Today was a little more nerve-racking as every hole is a potential disaster. But I was very pleased how I handled the situation.
“I knew that no-one had ever broke 100 for the tournament so I knew that if I could have a half decent round then everyone else would have to play extremely well.
“It was only in the last three or four holes that winning became an issue – I didn’t want to go in the water and I didn’t want to hit a branch.”
And he admitted he called on an old friend to help him to the title.
“I was aware of the other scores because Mark Mouland and I go back a long way and he was giving me updates,” he added.
“I knew that with about five holes to go the others were having trouble and it was mine to throw away. I meant I had to concentrate on what I was doing.
“To win any professional tournament means you have to get over the finish line. This event is different though as there is danger at every hole – there have been so many double-bogeys out there today.
“There were some quality golfers out there and to put them all a few shots behind me is excellent. I’m absolutely delighted.”
Lilly finished as runner up on five-under with Mark Murphy and Gary Wolstenholme sharing third place on three-under. Murphy had surged through the field earlier in the day with a scintillating 49.
The prize for the super senior, to the highest placed competitor over the age of 60, went to Ryder Cup legend Brian Barnes, who was playing in his first professional tournament since 2000.

ANDREW FARMER LEADS RENFREWSHIRE ORDER OF MERIT

PRESS RELEASE FROM RENFREWSHIRE GOLF UNION

With only the County Championship at Bonnyton, the A P Scott Trophy at Caldwell and the Herbie Pirie Trophy at Renfrew left to play in the Order of Merit, Andrew Farmer (Kilmacolm) has a healthy lead.
His victories at the Eastwood Quaich and the Craigston Rose Bowl together with strong performances elsewhere have given him 673 points, more than 200 points ahead of Cochrane Castle’s Derek Anderson and 300 ahead of Steven Higgins of Gourock.   With everything to play for, the final three events will be fiercely competed.
The Junior Order of Merit is a much closer affair.  Ross Robertson of Old Ranfurly had been leading but chose to compete and qualify at the St Andrews Boys instead of competing at Port Glasgow.  In his absence, Colin Edgar (Cochrane Castle) shot an outstanding cpi67 to grab first place and 100 points.  Josh Beatt (Fereneze) added 85 points to his total in second place with a solid 71.  Both players leapfrogged Ross and the top three are Colin – 735, Josh 685 and Ross 656.  There are three events to be played – Eastwood, Lochwinnoch and Kilmacolm.
There is a separate Order of Merit for under 15 year olds and Josh Beatt (1090), Conor Toal (850) and Ross Robertson (782) will fight it out at the remaining three events for that award.

STEVEN O'HARA MAKES GOOD START TO CHALLENGE TOUR EVENT IN NORWAY

Report from Neil Ahern, Challenge Tour Press Officer

Steven O’Hara announced his belief that he could win the Norwegian Challenge prior to the tournament this week, and the Motherwell man backed up those claims with a five under par opening round of 67 which put him within just two shots of the lead at Byneset GK.
In his second Challenge Tour appearance of the season, O’Hara carded five birdies and not a single bogey as he shared third place going into the second day at the venue just outside Trondheim.
The 32 year old opened with four pars before birdies at the fifth and seventh holes helped him reach the turn in two under par and he gained shots at the par four 12th, the par three 15th and par five 17th to finish the day two shots behind overnight leader Alvaro Velasco.
“I hit the ball really well again today,” said O’Hara, who claimed his best finish of The European Tour season at the Lyoness Open powered by Greenfinity two weeks ago. “I even left a few shots out there. I think I had a putt for birdie at every hole.
“I was hitting all the fairways and all the greens and that left me in good positions all day. I've just continued on from Austria. I'm swinging it really good and striking the ball very well so I just need to keep that going and keep giving myself chances.”
Andrew McArthur joined O’Hara and ten others in tied third place after he also signed for a bogey-free 67, with four birdies in five holes earning him a four under par back nine.
Gavin Dear was two shots further back on three under par after opening with a round of 69 and the 28 year old revealed that, having given his compatriot and friend Scott
Henry putting advice which helped him to a 13th place finish in Finland last week,
Henry returned the favour with some valuable advice on Dear’s driving.
“I played good today and actually enjoyed it, which makes a change,” said the Perth man. “I've been trying a few different things this week. I gave Scott putting lessons last week and we had a chat about my long game this week and he gave me some really good advice.
“It was just mental stuff, talking about ways of doing things. He suggested some things which changed the way I was thinking and how I approached my driving so it really helped.”
Chris Doak and Lloyd Saltman were alongside Dear in tied 27th place while Jack Doherty and Callum Macaulay both carded level par rounds of 72 and Scott Henry was one under par after a 73.
Meanwhile, former Rankings winner Alvaro Velasco returned to the top of the pile on the Challenge Tour, this time at the Norwegian Challenge as the Spaniard carded a superb seven under par round of 65 to take the overnight lead after the first day.
That handed Velasco a one shot advantage over Englishman Matt Haines at Byneset GK, where the interest in local man Elias Bertheussen was growing as the 21 year old was just three shots off the pace.
Coincidentally, Haines was the man who finished second to Velasco in the 2010 Challenge Tour Rankings, having won the season-ending Apulia San Domenico Grand Final right before his Spanish counter-part was crowned Number One.
