DUNCAN STEWART SHARES EUR0PRO TOUR LEAD AT MAR HALL

Grantown-on-Spey's Duncan Stewart and Englishman Warren Harmston share a one-shot lead after the opening round of the MarHall.com Scottish Classic.
Both signed for five-under-par 65s on the first day of the 54-hole 888poker.com PGA EuroPro Tour event at Mar Hall near Glasgow and lead Daniel Wardrop and Mark Laskey who are tied for third on four under par.
With a further 14 players just two shots off the lead, the tournament looks set to be one of the closest-fought contests of the 2012 campaign.
Stewart started at the 10th but was level par on completing his first nine holes after birdies at 12 and 17 were cancelled out by a double bogey at the par-five 15th, a hole which treated most other golfers well on the opening day, witnessing almost twice as many birdies as it did pars.
An eagle at the first got the Scot’s final nine off to a flyer and back-to-back birdies at three and four took him to four under before a three at the ninth saw him take the clubhouse lead.
Harmston (Wentworth Golf Club) had a more straight forward opening round than his co-leader. Also starting at the 10th, he made five birdies and 13 pars in an unblemished first 18.
Welshman Laskey is 13th on the Tour Order of Merit and a win this week could propel him as high as second, with the top five at the end of the season earning a category on the 2013 Challenge Tour.
Wardrop is 66th and is looking for his first top-ten finish of the season. Only the top 60 golfers are invited to compete in the season-final Tour Championship.
Laskey (Brocket Hall) made a confident start, registering birdies at three, five and nine to turn home three under par. Coming in he made eight pars and a birdie four at the 15th took him to four under par.
Manchester golfer Wardrop (Didsbury Golf Club) made birdie at eight but made really strides on the back nine, where four birdies were marred only by a bogey at 16. He negotiated the par-four 11th in three strokes and made consecutive birdies at 13, 14 and 15, though the five shots he took on the 16th cost him a share of the lead.
Among the 14 golfers two shots behind the leading pair of Stewart and Harmston are Stuart Manley (Machynys Peninsula) and Martin LeMesurier (South Winchester Golf Club).
Manley leads the Order of Merit after claiming victory at Rowallan Castle last week and a win at Mar Hall would all but guarantee he finished the summer among the top five Tour golfers. LeMesurier is fourth and could overtake Manley at the top should he win and the Welshman finished lower than 12th this week.
Elliot Saltman and George Woolgar (third and fifth respectively on the Order of Merit) are both among 15 golfers three shots off the lead.
The second round of the MarHall.com Scottish Classic gets underway at 7:30am on Thursday morning (August 9). Entry to the venue is free for spectators and live scoring is available at www.europrotour.com.
A cut will be made following Thursday’s play with the top 50 plus ties proceeding to play Friday’s final round.

GARETH IS MADE OF WRIGHT STUFF

By NATHANIEL SYLVESTER
PGA Press Officer
Lothians-based WelshmanGareth Wright bagged two eagles in a rollercoaster second round at the Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship at De Vere Carden Park.
The West Linton pro (pictured) followed up his first round 66 with a three-under-par 69 that took the Welsh-born ace through the gamut of emotions.
He bogeyed the third, birdied the fourth then had back to back dropped shots on seven and eight before an eagle on the 568-yard par-5 ninth got him back on track.
A further birdie came at 13 with a brilliant seven iron to four feet on the par five 18th taking him to nine under for the £78,000 event and just a shot behind leader Craig Shave.
“I felt good on the range in the morning but struggled for rhythm early on but something clicked into place on the ninth and I played really nicely the rest of the round,” said Wright who is tied second with former European Tour player Stuart Little who recorded a 66.
“On the last I hit three wood leaving me 170 yards and hit a seven iron to four feet for eagle which turned a mediocre round into a really nice round.
“My game has been pretty good all year, bar a spell where I had tendonitis in my arm, but apart from that it’s been going well.”
PGA Cup captain Russell Weir is in attendance at the Cheshire resort to run the rule over potential candidates for his team with a captain’s pick available to him for next year's matches against the United States at Slaley Hall

ANGLER CRAIG SHAVE IN LINE TO HOOK BIG GLENMUIR PRIZE

NEWS RELEASE FROM THE PGA
Keen angler Craig Shave has given himself a great opportunity of hooking one of golf's most prestigious tournaments.
The Whestone pro birdied three of his last four holes to card a second successive 67 to sit 10-under-par at the halfway stage of the Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship which is celebrating its 40th anniversary.
His burst of scoring at De Vere Carden Park's Nicklaus Course left him one ahead of nearest challengers Stuart Little (Minchinhampton New GC) and Gareth Wright (West Linton) who posted 66 and 69 respectively.
Joint overnight leader John Dwyer (Ashbourne) is at eight under following a 70 and Steve Parry (North West Golf Academy) three behind after a 67.
Shave has struggled for his best form on the Midland PGA circuit but a tip on his set up from his father plus a new putter have reaped dividends in the £78,000 tournament which is supported by Peugeot.
"My alignment was out which happens when I'm not playing well. My parents spotted that on the range and I've put that right," he said
"I've also got a new putter in the bag which has made a difference.
"I didn't hole anything from distance but just hit them all pretty close, I probably left a few out there and missed a few from eight to 10 feet.
"There are still two more rounds to go so I could chuck in a couple of 80s and end up last but I'll just doing what I'm doing and see where we finish up."
Little served up the round of the day with some sparkling iron play in his six under 66 as he exploded into life with four birdies in five holes from the sixth, saving his best till last too with an eagle on the 507-yard par five 18th.
And with the sun blazing down on the Cheshire resort, the only cloud on the horizon for veteran Little was the state of his body.
"My biggest concern is my body and if it will hold up for five days on the spin so I'll rest up and get ready to go again," he said.
"But I'm excited especially with what's at the end of it in terms of qualifying for the PGA Cup."
Little, who represented Great Britain and Ireland's in last year's PGA Cup in California, has adopted a strategy of patience and it paid off with just one dropped shot over his opening 36 holes
"The course is in good condition, it is set up well but you still have to be careful, treat it with a bit of respect," he added.
"You have to concentrate and be on you're a game thinking wise because there a lot of holes where you can just slip up on."
Wright, out in the second last group of the day, had two eagles, two birdies and three bogeys in an eventful round but was still happy with his performance.
"I felt good on the range in the morning but struggled for rhythm early on but something clicked into place on the ninth and I played really nicely the rest of the round," he said.
"On the last I hit three wood leaving me 170 yards and hit a seven iron to four feet for eagle which turned a mediocre round into a really nice round."
Former champion Dwyer was one over through six holes after two bogeys but hit back with three birdies in four holes from the 11th.
"I made a shaky start and lost it for a few holes but thankfully got a few birdies back and played some of the kind of golf I played yesterday," he said.
"I'm happy to have shot 70, it's always hard to follow the kind of score I had in the first round and keep it going.
"The most important thing is to hold position and I'm still very much in there."
