HARRY ELLIS v HENRY TOMLINSON FOR ENGLISH AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

NEWS RELEASE FROM ENGLAND GOLF
Harry Ellis from Hampshire will meet Lancashire’s Henry Tomlinson in a North v South battle over 36-holes tomorrow for the English men's amateur championship, supported by abacus, at Silloth-on-Solway.
Both had to go to the 19th hole in their semi-finals before Ellis overcame Jordan Smith, while Tomlinson edged past Nathan Kimsey.
Ellis, perhaps the youngest at 16 ever to reach the final, found himself three down through six holes but he battled back to go two up with three to play.
But in the see-saw semi, Smith won the 16th and 17th to square the match and they couldn’t be separated at the last. Returning to the first hole, Smith fired his approach through the back and failed to get up-and-down, while Ellis needed just a regular par 4 to win.
“This is unbelievable,” said the Hampshire teenager. “I felt my game was suited to match play but I had to dig deep today. Even when I was three down I never stopped believing and I haven’t felt under pressure all week.
“I think it was a bonus playing the Carris Trophy last week on a links course and I felt if I could get through the qualifying I had a good chance. I’ve been playing well this season and felt it was only a matter of time before something good happened.”
In the other semi-final, Kimsey twice held the lead only for the durable Tomlinson to battle back. The 19 year old from the Royal Lytham club eagled the 13th to get back to all square then gained a great break at the next.
His second shot was heading for the heather but struck a buggy and finished on the fairway and from there he pitched on and holed for birdie to go one up.
He increased that with a birdie at 15, only for Kimsey to win 16 with a par but Tomlinson was still ahead playing the last.
It was here that Kimsey had a lucky break when his approach from the right rough was heading for the mire behind the green until it struck a TV man and dropped on to the fringe.
From there he took two putts for par but it still seemed Tomlinson was in the box seat. But he three-putted from distance, his second putts horseshoeing out. So again the contest went down the 19th.
There they both hit the green in regulation and faced birdie putts from around 20 feet. But while Tomlinson took two for par, Kimsey took three and was out.
“The ball bouncing off the buggy on 14 was a big break for me but it was levelled when Nathan got the break on 18,” said Tomlinson.
“It was a roller-coaster day but I kept telling myself I could win. I felt the eagle at 13 was the key. I hit a five iron to 15 feet and holed the putt. It was unfortunate for Nathan on the 19th but you have to keep going and this will be my first ever final.”
Tomlinson caused the major upset of the day when he put out Brabazon Trophy winner Neil Raymond on the 18th in the morning, while Kimsey ended the dream for his Lincolnshire colleague Shaun Marshall also on the last.
The first tee time is at 08.30 tomorrow and entry to the event for specators is free. More information and scores for the Men's English Amateur can be found on the Championships section of the England Golf website.

SUDDENLY IT'S SUNNY JIM ! FURYK LEADS BY TWO AT HALFWAY IN BRIDGESTONE INVITATIONAL

Jim Furyk, pictured, has been fairly quiet all season. But the American has come into the limelight to set a cracking pace in the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational at the Firestone Country Club.
The man with the most unorthodox swing among the world's top players has shot 63-66 to lead by two shots on 11-under-par 129 at the end of play on the second day at Akron, Ohio.
His closest challenger is Spain's Rafael Cabrera-Bello with 66-65 for 131.
Former Open champion Louis Oosthuizen from South Africa is lying third on 132 after rounds of 67-65.
Northern Irishmen Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell moved up the leaderboard, but actually lost ground on Furyk, both shooting 67s over the par-70 course. They are on 137.
Martin Laird could do no better than a two-over 72 for 140, the same halfway tally as fellow-Scot Paul Lawrie could improved by four shots with a 68. Paul had a double bogey 6 in his first round.
Tiger Woods, like Martin Laird, shot a 72 and he is on 142.
New Open champion Ernie Els, who missed the cut in last week's Canadian Open, is on 146 after a pair of uninspired 73s.
And what on earth has happened to Tom Lewis, the Walker Cup player who did so well as an amateur and in his rookie year as a pro. Rounds of 78-76 for 154 suggest that something is far wrong somewhere, probably between his ears.

HUTCHEON LAST TO FIRST, CAMERON SHOOTS AN ALBATROSS

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
The odd golden eagle can be seen in the North-east of Scotland but never an albatross!
One did pop up on the McDonald Golf Club course at Ellon, Aberdeenshire today in the annual pro-am - a hole in one at a par-4 hole by Tartan Tour pro Ross Cameron (pictured)
An Ellon man who used to be attached to the McDonald club - he is now sponsored by Saltire Energy, Cameron holed his tee shot at the 14th hole (255yd) on his way to a round of six-over-par 76.

Having "shot" an albatross, does that mean Ross Cameron will end up like the Ancient Mariner (google it!).
Banchory's Greig Hutcheon lived up to the "last shall be first" biblical statement in winning the £1,100 top prize with a five-under-par round of 66.

Hutcheon was the last of the 29 pros off the first tee and his score pipped long-time clubhouse leader James McKinnon (Irvine) who earned a £879 consolation prize.
Hutcheon's card included seven birdies, four of them in a row from the 13th. He had earlier birdied the second, sixth and seventh but dropped shots at the third and 12th.
Scott Henderson (Kings Links) finished third on 67 for a £660 pay-out. He had five birdies.
Host club pro Sandy Aird who earned £497 for finishing joint fourth on 68 picked up a £132 bonus for leading home the winning pro-am team - also locals - James Callander (handicap 18), Gavin Morrison (13) and John Hutchison (22).

First off the tee at 9am, their net total of 15-under-par 125 stood up all day as the winning score.

CHALLENGE TOUR REPORT AND SCORES

From Sarah Gwynn, Challenge Tour Press Officer
sgwynn@europeantour.com
Swede Kristoffer Broberg stormed into the halfway lead in the Finnish Challenge courtesy of a sublime five under par 66 in the second round at Kytäjä Golf.
The 22 year old would have enjoyed a greater advantage at the top of the leaderboard were it not for a double bogey at the last, but nevertheless at seven under leads by one shot from Dutchmen Wil Besseling and Reinier Saxton, Austrian Roland Steiner, Chile’s Mark Tullo and Norwegian Espen Kofstad, who is enjoying a fine run of form having won the Doubletree by Hilton Acaya Open two weeks ago and finished third in last week’s English Challenge.
“It was a disappointing finish, especially on a short hole, but overall I’m very happy with how I’m playing and to be in this position,” said Broberg.
“My putting was great today – it felt like I couldn’t miss. This is only my second Challenge Tour event and it’s still very new to me, so I’m happy to play like this. It’s an unfamiliar situation to be leading a Challenge Tour event, but I’m used to it from the Nordic League, so hopefully I will cope with it well at the weekend.
“The course is very similar to Bro Hof Slott, where I play in Sweden, so it suits my game and I like it a lot.”
Kofstad, one of the quintet at six under par, is riding a wave following his maiden Challenge Tour victory a fortnight ago, and a 67 propelled him up the leaderboard.
“It doesn’t feel as though I can play badly at the moment,” said the 24 year old. “All my drives are hitting the fairways and all my iron shots are going where I want them to on the greens. I’m holing a few putts as well, so it all feels very simple right now.
“It’s a great spell for me and it’s all down to confidence. I know now that I can beat everyone else here and I’ve calmed down so much in the last few weeks.
"A few weeks ago I wasn’t getting into the big events like the Rolex Trophy in three weeks’ time which is only for the top 45 in the Rankings, but now I can relax and just do my thing and it feels very easy.
“Winning was certainly a tough hurdle to get over because I didn’t know if I could do it. Last year I never had the feeling that I could pull it off. This year I seem to have turned a corner and I’m riding that wave.
“This is the third weekend in a row I’m going into the weekend near the top of the leaderboard and it’s amazing. I just need to keep doing what I’m doing and enjoy myself. This is such a beautiful place, it’s hard not to enjoy playing this golf course. I just want to savour every minute.”
Steiner endured a shaky start to his second round of 69, but recovered well and added gloss to his score with a birdie at the last.
Former World Number One tennis player Yevgeny Kafelnikov, who is pursuing a professional golf career and had a sponsor’s invitation to the tournament, missed the cut after rounds of 80 and 74, while three-time European Tour winner Nick Dougherty is six shots off the lead at one under par.
SCOTSWATCH: Scots Raymond Russell (67-138 for T9), Scott Henry (66-139 for T12), Jack Doherty (68-141 ) and Andrew McArthur (71-143) made the cut. Scots who missed out were Lloyd Saltman (73 for six-over 148), Calum Macaulay (76 for 159) and Gavin Dear (75 for 153). Alastair Forsyth retired after a few holes of his opening round.

LAW, STEWART TOP SCOTS IN EUROPRO TOUR EVENT

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Aberdeen's David Law and Duncan Stewart (Grantown on Spey) finished top Scots in the PGA EuroPro Tour event, the Eagle Orchid Scottish Masters, at Rowallan Castle GC, Ayrshire today.
They earned £775 apiece for a joint eighth place finish on two-under 211. Law, playing out of the Paul Lawrie Golf Centre, had rounds of 73,66 and 72, Stewart 66, 72 and 73. Both had double bogeys on the final day.

Law, pictured, might have made the top five but for a bad run from the ninth to 11th which cost him bogey-bogey-double bogey. He did recoup some of the lost shots with birdies at the 12th and 16th.
Stewart's double bogey 6 came at the 12th.
Chris Kelly (Cawder) collected £575 for joint 14th place on 212 (71,69,72).
Banchory's James Byrne (IMG) had a double bogey 7 at the long 17th after a bogey at the 15th but the former Walker Cup player finished inside the top 20 with scores of 67, 75 and 72 for one-over 214 and joint 19th place. He earned £385 - and he has not had many cheques in this his rookie year.
Elliot Saltman (Archerfield Links) earned £285 for joint 32nd place on 217 (73,73,71) while Fraserburgh's Jordan Findlay, who has no club attachment or sponsor, had a disastrous last round of 78 with back-to-back double bogeys at the sixth and seventh.

He had earlier scores of 73 and 71 and finished joint 4th on 222. His payslip was £222. Like Byrne, Findlay has had a lean first year as a pro.
Welshmen finished first and joint second Stuart Manley (Machynys Peninsula), a Walker Cup player in 2003, earned the £10,000 first prize with scores of 72, 66 and 68 for seven-under 206.
Oliver Farr, also born in Wales and playing out of Worcester GC, tied with Irishman Michael McGeady) for second place, a shot behind the winner on 207. Farr scored 71, 67 and 69, McGeady 67, 70 and 70. They earned £3,750 each.

IT'S A DOCHERTY v FORREST FINAL IN SCOTTISH AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP AT ROYAL DORNOCH

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Tomorrow's 36-hole final of the Scottish amateur championship at Royal Dornoch will be contested by two unseeded players - San Diego University, California student Grant Forrest (Craigielaw), pictured right, Scottish boys match-play champion in 2010 and Under-16s title-winner before that, and Richard Docherty (Bearsden), pictured below, who spent most of the past four years at Lindenwood University, St Charles, Missouri and who won the Dunbartonshire county championship before heading north.
Forrest, who had his 19th birthday on June 19, was Freshman of the Year (2011-2012) in the West Coast Conference. Docherty is 22.
Forrest is No 305 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings. Docherty is No 2,236. Neither has ever won an SGU 72-hole Order of Merit event.
Both young men have obviously played very well this week to come through seven rounds of cut-and-thrust and though, on paper, the 2012 final does not have the appeal of the last two Scottish finals at Royal Dornoch - Steven O'Hara versus Craig Heap in 2000 and Dean Robertson versus Raymond Russell in 1993, it could surprise us all and be a match-play classic played out in front of, hopefully, a big gallery.
The last Scottish boys' match-play champion to win the Scottish men's title was, of course, David Law (Hazlehead). He did it in the same year (2009) and repeated his Scottish men's amateur championship triumph last year.
The first round will tee off at 8.30am.
Docherty halted the great run of North man Bryan Fotheringham (Inverness), beating him by two holes in the semi-finals after Fotheringham had held the lead in the early stage.
At 34, Bryan's legs were perhaps beginning to feel the strain at the end of a long and tiring week. His wife, a former British women's police golf champion, will be proud of him.
In the morning Fotherham had removed the last seed from the championship, albeit the top one, Graeme Robertson (Glenbervie) in a quality match that would have graced the final. Both men were under par as Fotheringham reached the semi-finals for the first time with a one-hole victory.
Forrest, whose father died recently - it would have been his birthday, has used that as a spur to play to his best form. His dad would certainly have been proud of him this week, win or lose in the final.
Grant, North Berwick-based, beat Banff teenager Lewis Mutch (Duff House Royal) by 4 and 3 in the semi-finals, having beaten Fraser Moore 6 and 5 in the quarter-finals.

TODAY'S RESULTS

QUARTER-FINALS
Bryan Fotheringham bt Graeme Robertson (No 1 seed) 1 hole.

Lewis Mutch bt Elliot Wilson 5 and 3.
Grant Forrest bt Fraser Moore 6 and 5.

SEMI-FINALS

Docherty bt Fotheringham 2 holes

STARS COME OUT FOR FARMFOODS BRITISH PAR-3 CHAMPIONSHIP IN ENGLAND NEXT WEEK

NEWS RELEASE
Ryder Cup winning captain Ian Woosnam, fresh from a top 10 finish in the Senior Open at Turnberry, will have a challenge of a shorter variety when he competes in the Farmfoods British Par-3 Championship next week.
The Welshman, a winner of 48 titles across the globe including the 1991 Masters, will be part of a star-studded field including Tony Jacklin, Brian Barnes - making a competitive comeback after a decade and Solheim Cup-winning captain Alison Nicholas, for the championship at Warwickshire's Nailcote Hall.
Matthew Hayes, managing director of event organiser Champions (UK) Plc, is delighted to have Woosnam in the field.
"Ian Woosnam playing at this year's event reflects the ongoing ambition of the Farmfoods British Par 3 Championship to be one of the biggest events on the golfing calendar," he said.
"We are looking forward to four days of action packed and entertaining golf."
A number of past and current European Tour players plus a posse of PGA aces will descend on the venue which hosts the tournament from August 7-10.
Celebrity pro-ams sandwich the 36-hole championship, which has a £15,000 top prize for the winner over the challenging Cromwell Course, which has seen a number holes remodelled.
Among some of the other star names in action at Nailcote Hall are Ryder Cup stars Tommy Horton, Des Smyth and Paul Broadhurst, record European Senior Tour money and tournament winner Carl Mason and Sky pundit and Tour star Tony Johnstone.
Midland favourite Paul Wesselingh, who achieved his breakthrough win on the European Senior Tour with victory in the ISPS Handa PGA Seniors Championship, is also in action as is Gary Wolstenholme, winner of the first two European Senior Tour events of the season.
Wolstenholme, who famously defeated Tiger Woods in the 1995 Walker Cup, paid tribute to the primer mover behind the tournament, Rick Cressman - the owner of Nailcote Hall.
"For us to play a Par 3 tournament like this, and all it entails including playing with some celebrities and raising money for charity, is superb," said Wolstenholme.
"It s a break from the norm, but the benefit is that most people enjoy this format of golf. Once they have tried, you struggle to get them off the course as everyone wants that hole in one.
"You don't get too many opportunities on a normal round of golf as there's only about four, where here you have one every hole.
"I've not seen anyone have a hole in one on the course and maybe I'll get the opportunity to have one here. I've had 15 in my life but to do one here would be special."
Wolstenholme also rates the new-look changes made to the Nailcote track.
"The changes are phenomenally good. They've landscaped the golf course to make one half of the course as interesting as the other.
“It looks like they've been there all the time but he's made the course more interesting. Water is one of those great mental hazards. You can't get away with going into the water, unlike a bunker.
"The fact you're not hitting more than a six iron, some of those down wind holes become more difficult selecting the right club.”

PROQUIP LINK TO RYDER CUP TO BE EXTENDED AT GLENEAGLES 2014

NEWS RELEASE
Langholm: ProQuip will continue its long association with The Ryder Cup following its appointment as Preferred Supplier to The 2014 European Ryder Cup Team at Gleneagles.
The Scottish golf weatherwear specialist has a rich heritage in the prestigious event and will design and supply its 20th Ryder Cup waterproof suit when the biennial match between Europe and the USA returns to the home of golf, Scotland, in two years’ time.
The 2014 Ryder Cup will mark the 31st anniversary of ProQuip’s involvement in the Ryder Cup.
But it hasn’t always been one-sided – ProQuip was first selected to design rain suits for the 1983 USA Team, captained by Jack Nicklaus, at PGA National Golf Club, Florida.
Since then, ProQuip, famous for its innovative, lightweight waterproof-breathable performance fabrics, has been selected as the Preferred Supplier to six American Teams and 12 European Teams, making it the most popular golf weatherwear brand in Ryder Cup history.
This includes the new high-performance rain suit designed for José María Olazábal’s European Team at Medinah Country Club, Chicago, Illinois, September 25-30.
ProQuip General Manager Russell Brooks said: “ProQuip is synonymous with the Ryder Cup, becoming famous for ultra-lightweight rain suits worn by the world’s best players.
“The company really did revolutionise golf weatherwear, especially with the award-winning Ultralite range in the early 1990s, leading the market with significantly lighter, softer and easier-to-swing-in waterproofs than were commonly available at the time.
“ProQuip led the market again in 2006 when the European Ryder Cup Team wore Silk Touch, the lightest and quietest waterproofs anyone had ever seen in golf. And who will forget what happened in Wales in 2010 when Europe, captained by Colin Montgomerie, won a famous victory in the worst weather the Ryder Cup has ever seen?”
