AMERICAN ROOKIE SHARES FINNISH CHALLENGE LEAD

EUROPEAN CHALLENGE REPORT
From: Sarah Gwynn
American Brooks Koepka continued his smooth transition into professional golf by taking a share of the first-round lead in the Finnish Challenge, thanks to a four under par 67.
Playing his fourth event since joining the paid ranks, Koepka set the benchmark at Kytäjä Golf in southern Finland, and was later joined by Englishman Matt Haines, Austrian Roland Steiner and Swede Bjorn Åkesson.
The 22 year old has had three sponsors’ invitations so far this season, and last week’s tied seventh place finish in the English Challenge earned him a ticket to Finland, the first stop of a three-leg swing in the Nordic region.
“It was great out there,” said Koepka. “I really didn’t have any chances to make a bogey today. The only disappointment was that I played the par fives in level par, but four under is a good start.
“Things are going well so far and I’m having a great time. I played in the US Open as an amateur and then came over to Europe and turned professional.
“I’ve played okay so far, and I’m just hoping to improve every week and get the hang of it. I decided to come to Europe because I just wanted to play, and this gives me the best opportunity to do that and prepare for the Qualifying School at the end of the year. That’s the main goal.”
Haines was also tied seventh at Stoke by Nayland last week, and he has been showing some promising form of late having returned to the Challenge Tour after a disappointing rookie season on The European Tour last year.
“I did everything very steadily today,” said the 22 year old. “I drove the ball well and didn’t miss many fairways. And my short putting was good, so I holed out nicely. When I hit it to about ten to 12 feet, I managed to hole a few birdie putts.
“The course is very different from most courses we’ve played this year. Usually they are short and tight, but this is long and quite open. It’s wet as well, so the ball is just stopping, which means it is playing even longer. I like it.
“I started the season very shakily, but the last few weeks I’ve been playing better, although I haven’t quite managed to finish it off at the weekend.
"I can’t complain about coming back to the Challenge Tour after the way I played last year, but it was still a bit of a comedown. I’m playing better now though, and hopefully I can build on it in the second half of the season.”
Åkesson is another player in form, having notched five top 20 finishes this season, and was delighted to grab a share of the lead with a birdie at the last.
“I bogeyed the 16th, so it was nice to get back to four under at the 18th,” he said. “I had five putts for the first five holes, so my short game was good. I like this course a lot and my game feels in great shape, so it should be a fun week.”
Steiner, who represented Austria in the Mission Hills World Cup last year alongside fellow Challenge Tour player Florian Praegant, made a flying start to the first round, carding five consecutive birdies from the 12th, but his progress was halted by a bogey at the turn.
He said: “I was playing really well and had a great start, but I made a stupid mistake on the 18th, my ninth, when I missed a putt from about 80cm.
“That stopped the flow and although I played well after that, I was not so confident on the greens. I missed two good chances at the first and second.
“I made a bad shot into the seventh which resulted in another bogey, but luckily I was able to finish well with a birdie at the last.”
Englishman Chris Gane opened with a three under par 67, while 12 players, including three-time European Tour winner Nick Dougherty, were another shot back at two under.

RAYMOND BATTLES BACK TO KEEP DOUBLE HOPES ALIVE AT ENGLISH AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

                   NEWS RELEASE FROM ENGLAND GOLF
Image Neil raymond copyright Tom WardThe double of the Brabazon Trophy and English Amateur, supported by Abacus, is still alive for Neil Raymond. But he had to dig deep in his two contests today to make tomorrow’s quarter-finals in a dramatic day at Silloth-on-Solway GC.
Having edged past Adam Hedges on the 18th green in the morning, Raymond (image © Tom Ward) found himself four down to Marcus Mohr at the turn. It seemed all over for the Hampshire golfer, but he staged a remarkable recovery to stand on the 18th tee just one down.
But that was only half of the drama. Both made the final green in regulation but Raymond faced a putt of around 40 feet, while Mohr was about six feet away.
Incredibly Raymond rolled his in and Mohr missed to take the tussle into extra holes.
They halved the 19th then, at the next, both missed the green, but while Mohr chipped long, Raymond hit his recovery to four feet and while Mohr failed with his putt, Raymond holed his for victory.
“I’m exhausted,” said Raymond. “I was definitely on the back foot more than I wanted today. I gave Marcus too many holes on the front nine but I’m still in the tournament.
"I looked at that putt on 18 from every angle as I hadn’t holed anything all week. But thankfully it dropped in the left side and then I was surprised that Marcus missed his.
“On the 19th I hit a poor drive, had a horrendous lie but gripped as hard as I could on a nine iron and found the green. Then I lipped out for birdie as I had on the 11th and 16th.
“Then on the 20th when we both missed the green I had a good lie, pitched to four feet and holed out after he missed from around 20 feet.”
In the all-Surrey clash, Ben Taylor came out on top against his county foursomes partner Josh White 3 and 2, gaining revenge for a defeat in a county championship two years ago.
“In the only time we’ve played each other, Josh beat me in the quarter-finals at Croham Hurst two years ago and went on to win the title. So we are level now,” said Taylor.
“We are foursomes partners in county matches and know each other’s game well. But I made a terrible start this afternoon, losing balls on the first two holes.”
That left Taylor with a hill to climb but he played solidly after that, cutting the deficit with a birdie at the fourth. But it wasn’t until the 11th that he managed to draw level with another birdie, then birdies at the 13th, 14th and 15th sealed his victory.
With a considerable crowd watching his every move, Seb Crookall-Nixon hardly put a foot wrong as he overcame Adam Chapman 5 and 3 in an all-Cumbrian match.
“I know Adam quite well,” said Crookall-Nixon. “I’ve played county golf with him and he’s done well to get this far.  But I played solid, didn’t drop a shot, had 13 pars and two birdies. I won the third with a par then Adam lost a ball on the fifth so I was gifted those two holes.”
The England boy cap won the ninth and 12th with pars to go four up and while they both birdied the 14th, Crookall-Nixon’s second birdie came at 15 with a 20ft putt to settle the issue.
Jordan Smith has been enjoying a successful season and he reached the quarter-finals with a 2 and 1 win over international Garrick Porteous.
“That wasn’t the best I’ve played,” said Smith. “We both struggled for the first five holes but we settled down and we swapped holes on the front nine.”
Smith drove the green at the tenth for birdie to go ahead for the second time and he increased it at the 12th with a par. But Porteous hit back again with birdies at 13 and 14 to square the match only for Smith to win 15 with a par and 16 with a birdie to go two ahead again. They halved the 17th in birdies which saw Smith over the line.
Harry Ellis secured his last-eight place with a 6 and 5 win over Tom Brown, who admitted he had ‘run out of gas’.
“I got spanked out there and had nothing left in the tank,” he said. “I’ve never played five rounds in four days before.”
Ellis, who bogeyed the first to slip behind, soon hit back and took the lead on the fifth with a par. “After that I hit every green and was always putting for birdie,” he said.
He increased it with a two-foot birdie at six while a par at eight put him 3-up. That was when Brown began to wilt and Ellis won three of the next five holes for a comprehensive victory.
“I’m keeping my good form from last week’s Carris Trophy,” he added. “I’m playing Seb Crookall-Nixon tomorrow. I’m looking forward to it and I know all about him.”
Lincolnshire's Shaun Marshall birdied four of the closing seven holes to turn a two-hole deficit into a two-hole victory over surprise package James Ashman, the lad who put out international Ben Stow in the first round.
“I’m a bit shocked,” said Marshall. “I didn’t get through the qualifying at Woburn last year but I came back well this morning and this afternoon.
“Now I’ve got to check back into my hotel again. I did the same last night and I’ve got a puncture in my van. I picked up a nail going back last night.”
The first tee time is at 08.15 tomorrow and entry to the event for specators is free.
More information and scores for the men's English Amateur can be found on the Championships section of the England Golf website.

Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Newmachar's Martin Lawrence won the top prize of £584 in today's Craigielaw Young Pros' 36-hole tournament at the East Lothian links today.
Lawrence has made appearances on the EuroPro Tour but this is his best performance since winning the inaugural Sandy Pipey Masters young pros' tournament at Royal Dornoch GC last season.
At Craigielaw, he shot 70-68 for a four-under-par total of 138 and a two-shot victory from joint runners-up Michael Patterson (Kilmacolm) (69-71) and Paul Betty (Hamilton). Each earned £362.
The shot that separated the winner from his pursuers came at the long 15th where he recorded an eagle 3 to set beside his birdies at the first, fourth, 13th, 15th and 18th.
On the downside, Lawrence bogeyed the eighth, 10th, 12th and 16th.
Former Curtis Cup player and British women's open amateur champion in 1990 and 1995, Julie (Wade/Hall) Otto, now a teaching pro at Elie Sports Centre, earned £62 for an aggregate of 148 (77-71).

BRORA FOUR-DAY REPORT FROM ROBIN WILSON

Three former winners of the Clynelish Salver will appear in Friday's semi finals of the Brora four-day competition - local Roddie Cameron (2005 and 2008 winner), Dougal Chalmers (Panmure) (1985) and Iain Powell (Murcar Links), the holder and winner also in 2002.
Completing the semi-final line-up which has Cameron drawn against Powell is local Liam MacDonald-MacLeod who is making his first appearance in the event at this stage and today meets the 1985 winner, Chalmers.
MacDonald-MacLeod has his eyes set on becoming a teaching and club professional at the end of this season and this is the first time he has got past the first round.
In round two he accounted for the 2010 winner Euan Polson (The Nairn) on the last green.
Cameron beat the leading qualifier, Deeside's Andrew Powell, with a birdie on the 16th green while  Powell's younger brother Iain cruised past first time scratch qualifier, local youth Owen MacLennan, after 15 holes.
Chalmers at 54 is the oldest of the four semi-finalists and he produced an eagle 2 on the first hole to proceed to his 5 and 4 win over Cameron's son Neil, a greenkeeper at Castle Stuart.

STEWART LEADS SIX SCOTS INTO LAST DAY AT ROWALLAN CASTLE

By COLIN FARQUHARSONColin@scottishgolfview.com

Duncan Stewart is still in with a chance of a last-day crack at winning a £10,000 jackpot prize for a second time on the PGA EuroPro Tour - and he has five fellow Scots for company in the last round of the Eagle Orchid Scottish Masters at Rowallan Castle GC, Ayrshire.
David Law, Chris Kelly, James Byrne, Elliot Saltman and Jordan Findlay, alongwith Stewart, survived the second-round cut at 150 or better.
Stewart, the overnight leader with a 66, slipped back to a one-over 72.
However, on 138 and in joint third place, two shots behind leader Graham Benson (Leighton Buzzard), he

has a sporting chance of winning if the putts start to drop with regularity.
Law, now playing out of the Paul Lawrie Golf Centre, shot up the leaderboard with the joint best score of the day, a 66, despite a double bogey 6 at the last after a bag of eight birdies. The Aberdonian rookie is joint seventh on 139 - a shot ahead of Cawder's Chris Kelly who had a double bogey 6 at the 15th in the midst of six birdies.
James Byrne (IMG) slipped from an opening 67 to 75 and is joint 18th on 142.
Jordan Findlay, the former British boys champion from Fraserburgh, had a 71 (which included three birdie 2s and a triple bogey 7 at the 15th) for 144.
Elliot Saltman (Archerfield Links) (73-73) and made the cut to the top 50 and ties right on the limit mark of 146. Younger brother Zack missed it by two.

In fact it was not a good day for Lothians players in general, although some, like Greg Nicolson (68) had good second-round scores, only Elliot Saltman from that area is through to the last day's play.
Mark Kerr was disqualified and Myles Cunningham retired.

Top seed - the only surviving one - Graeme Robertson (Glenbervie) swept into the last eight of the Scottish amateur championship with a 6 and 4 win over Craig Deerness at Royal Dornoch GC this afternoon.

STABLEFORD SCORING IN THIS WEEK'S US PGA TOUR EVENT

RENO, Nevada (AP) - Add the score to the list of complicated numbers Padraig Harrington, Justin Leonard, Stewart Cink and others will be calculating along with the elevation changes and gusty mountain wind at the Reno-Tahoe Open.
For the first time since the 2006 International in Castle Rock, Colorado, the modified Stableford will be used in a US PGA Tour event. The system designed to reward aggressive play awards 8 points for eagle, 5 for birdie, zero for par, and minus 1 for bogey and minus 3 for double bogey or worse.
John Daly, Mike Weir, David Duval, Ricky Barnes, Lee Janzen, Rocco Mediate, Stuart Appleby and Chris DiMarco also are in the event on the edge of the Sierra Nevada while the world's best compete at the World Golf Championships in Ohio.
