GRAHAM FOX, KENNY HUTTON SET THE PACE AT GLENEAGLES

KENNY HUTTON in action at Gleneagles today. Picture by ANDY FORMAN for the PGA of Scotland.

FROM RON MARSHALL, PGA PRESS OFFICER
Graham Fox, father of a 10-month old son, and Kenny Hutton, the second oldest player in the field, are the contrasting leaders at the halfway stage of the Gleneagles Scottish PGA Championship over the King's Course.
Fox admitted that he was staying away from home in East Kilbride this week for two reasons – to earn enough money to buy nappies, and to get some decent sleep.
And 48-year-old Hutton, 18 years the professional at Downfield in Dundee ("I'm glad Robert Arnott's playing – he's four months older!"), dragged wearying legs over a total of 32 holes today, with only a 20-minute break between rounds, as the championship got back onto an even keel after Monday's deluge brought play to a premature end.
Hutton's splendid seven-under aggregate of 135 (68-67) leaves him tied with Fox, and a shot ahead of Banchory's Greig Hutcheon, who carded two 68's, and last year's champion, Alan Lockhart, with former European Rookie of the Year, Scott Henderson, a further shot behind.
Fox, who had identical scores to Hutton's, missed a tiddler on the 13th green but made amends down the par-5 last, hitting a rescue club to 20 feet and holing for an eagle.
Hutcheon, easily the most battle-hardened of the 75-man field, won the title 13 years ago, but is cautious about his chances of regaining the trophy.
"I want to win, but I don't want to win it too much by getting ahead of myself."
Lockhart was always in a challenging position but seemed to have slipped off the pace after three putts at the 17th.  But a drive and a 3-wood to 15 feet at the last was followed by an eagle putt that restored the gloss to a round of 69.
Hutton recalled one of the first TV programmes he'd watched, the Double Diamond over the King's Course. "It's just one of the great courses, and to win the Scottish PGA championship here would be special."
The Dundee pro's scores were cemented by 'hitting lots of green and some nice iron play'.
Some 'encouragement' from a PGA official to speed up play affected Hutcheon at the seventh, and this resulted in a three-putt 'because I rushed at it – my own fault.'
The rest of his game was  generally solid, three bogeys outweighed by six birdies, and, as so often in this championship, he is the man to beat.
The halfway cut fell at five-over-par 147 with players of the calibre of former champion Mark Loftus (75-75 for 150), Mark Kerr (73-77 for 150) and Graeme Brown (Montrose Links) (76-80 for 156) on the wrong side of the diving line.

DEFENDING CHAMPION ALAN LOCKHART CARRIES ON WHERE HE LEFT OFF LAST YEAR AT GLENEAGLES

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.comDefending champion Alan Lockhart (Ladybank) led at the end of the Gleneagles Scottish PGA championship's first round which was completed this morning over the King's Course.

Overnight leader of the 15 scores completed on Monday, Jonathan Cliff (Murrayfield) comes next on 70, alongside Jason McCreadie (Buchanan Castle) and David Patrick (Elie Sports Centre)

Golfing Clothing in 2012

It's a different animal!

For many people golf was considered a conservative sport and it was probably fair to say that for many years the clothing matched. However something has happened recently and it seems that it has become a whole new different animal. Not an albatross, or an eagle or a birdie, but more of a bold bright tropical bird of paradise.

Over the past few years golf clothing has gradually undergone somewhat of a transformation in that it has a relaxed and casual feel to it. Add to this the fact that the styles have been getting younger, brighter and bolder and the main reason for this is that companies such as Puma, Nike and Oakley are making products that emulate the fresh faced youth of the pros that these companies are sponsoring.

For example Nike have gone bright pink, whereas Puma have adopted a orange feel to their clothing and Oakley are looking cool in fluorescent lime. Other companies are also following suit and bringing out bright plaids, vibrant hues and are mixing colours that you wouldn't normally see together.

It's not just the younger crowd that has been embracing the trend. Has anyone taken a look at John Daly recently? It's as much fun guessing which outrageous colour scheme he will come out in next as watching him play. John is sponsored by Loudmouth Clothing and thinks nothing of stepping onto the green in shockingly vibrant colours.

Along with bright colours the other theme that is prominent in 2012 ladies golf clothes is comfort. All the makers seem to be edging towards using technical fabrics that are lightweight, breathable and can soak up and expel moisture. The goal is to keep the player cool on the course. As far as technology goes, some of those leading the way are products that incorporate 'coldblack'. This is a dye that has recently been developed that resists and reflects UV rays, meaning the hotter the sun gets, the cooler the player will feel.

So to sum up...Golf trends for 2012 and beyond are all about comfort and brightness that reflect your personality. So if you don't mind standing out from the crowd, then you could be in for a treat.

EUROPRO TOUR EVENT AT ROWALLAN CASTLE NEXT WEEK

NEWS RELEASE
Chris Kelly is hoping home support will help guide one of the 888poker.com PGA EuroPro Tour’s Scottish regulars to victory in the Eagle Orchid Scottish Masters at Rowallan Castle Golf Club (pictured) next week (August 1 to 3).
Kelly, who is based at Cawder Golf Club in Bishopbriggs, Glasgow, is currently 22nd on the Tour’s Order of Merit. A victory at Rowallan Castle would put him within touching distance of earning a category on the 2013 Challenge Tour, a reward handed out to the top five golfers at the end of the season.
Rowallan Castle is the first course designed by eight times European No 1 golfer and 2010 Ryder Cup winning captain Colin Montgomerie and the Tour takes over the stunning Scottish venue on August 1-3.
It’s the first of two consecutive events in Scotland, with the Tour heading to Mar Hall in Bishopton the following week.
Kelly is one sixth of ‘Team Scotland’, a self-titled group of players who travel together on the Tour. Despite their name, two of the six are English but Kelly is hopeful that playing on home territory will bring success to their ranks.
“Team Scotland started as a bit of fun,” he explained. “There are six of us (myself, Duncan Stewart, Ed Wood, John Henry and Englishmen Steve Surry and Zane Scotland) and we all travel to the tournaments together and try and help each other out.
“I think there is a good chance that one of us will win one of the last five events; the boys are playing some good golf at the moment. Duncan has been playing well all year, I had a good start, Zane is a great player and at any point he could click and Steve has experience and has won on the Tour before. I think the chances of one of us winning are quite good.
“It would be great if we find some home support at Rowallan Castle. Hopefully a few people can make it out and support the boys because it is always nice when you have some people following you; it always spurs you on and is a boost to be playing in front of a few people.
“I don’t know the course that well, I have only played it once but I remember it was a very good golf course. A few of the boys played there last week in a PGA event, they said the greens were fantastic and I am sure it will be in good shape for the EuroPro Tour.
“I haven’t been playing that well recently but my game is coming on a little bit better now. I came third in the first tournament but I feel you are going to have to win one this year if you want to finish in the top five because so far this season there has been a different winner at each tournament. But hopefully I can produce a win and where better than in Scotland!”
Nineteen of the current Order of Merit top 20 will be in action at Rowallan Castle, including Scotland’s Elliot Saltman who returns to the Tour having competed in the Open Championship last week. Dale Whitnell, who finished tied 60th at Royal Lytham & St Annes, will also make his return to the Tour at Rowallan Castle.
Niall Campbell, Managing Director of Rowallan Castle Golf Club, commented: “We are delighted to be hosting the Euro Pro Tour this year and looking forward to showcasing our championship course to both players and spectators. It is the first time this prestigious event has been held in Ayrshire and is a fantastic opportunity for Rowallan Castle and local businesses.”
Eagle Orchid CEO Neil Armour said: "We are delighted to support the 888poker.com PGA EuroPro Tour, and so to help the next Ross Fisher, Louis Oosthuizen or Charl Schwartzel break through and move on to golfing greatness and take a path also followed by Marc Warren, the leading Scot at the 2012 US Open.  This is a key event on the Tour's schedule, and the first of two events this year in Scotland, the home of golf.
“The PGA EuroPro Tour is about professionalism, focus and excellence to achieve performance improvement up to a higher level.  So is Eagle Orchid - corporate financial advice and hands-on practical support that will take your business to the next level and beyond.
“From all at Eagle Orchid, we hope that everyone involved in the event - organisers, media partners, spectators and, of course, the players - have an outstanding week".
A field of 156 golfers will participate in the 54-hole event with a cut of the leading 50 players plus ties made after 36 holes. Spectator entry is free throughout the event, which begins on Wednesday, August 1 with the final round played on Friday, August 3. Directions to the course at Kilmaurs, Ayrshire are available here:
