FROM RON MARSHALL. SCOTTISH PGA PRESS OFFICER
Unrelenting rain forced play to be abandoned in today's opening round of the Gleneagles Scottish professional championship over the King’s Course at the Perthshire venue.
Waterlogged greens meant play halted at 12.45pm, and almost three hours later PGA officials had to concede that, despite the best efforts of the greenkeeping staff, no further play would be possible.
Of the 15 players from a field of 75 who completed their rounds, Jonny Cliff (Murrayfield) was the only one who sneaked under the par of 71, by a stroke. Leading on the course is 2003 champion, Chris Kelly, who was two under after 14 holes.
Tuesday's play will start at 7.30, and it’s hoped the second round will get under way before lunchtime.
Said PGA tournament controller, Roy Murray “ There was no prospect of getting the course properly playable again today, and we’ve taken a realistic view. We’re grateful to Gleneagles Hotel, who’re being very accommodating in helping ensure the championship remains a 72-hole event.”
