SURPISE LEADERS IN NEWLANDS TROPHY

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Hamilton's Stewart Henderson and Michael Daily (Erskine) are the surprise halfway leaders in this weekend's SGU 72-hole Order of Merit tournament, the Newlands Trophy at Lanark Golf Club.
They share the lead of four-under-par 136, both with rounds of 69 and 67.
They have a one-shot advantage over first-round leader Matthew Clark (Kilmacolm) (66-71) and Paul Ferrier (Baberton) (69-68), semi-finalist in the British amateur championship at Royal Troon last month.
Former Scottish youths champion Scott Borrowman (Dollar) maintained his recent improved form to post scores of 68 and 70 for 138, which gives him joint fifth place going into the final two rounds with Alan Sutherland (Ladybank) (69-69), Paul Shields (Bathgate) (72-66) and James White (Lundin) (70-68)
The cut fell at 149 and on the wrong side of that mark was Allyn Dick (Kingsknowe), winner of the Newlands Trophy for the past two years. He had scores of 76 and 74 for 150. Another surprise non-qualifier for the Sunday action was Fraser McKenna (Balmore), a winner more than once on the elite circuit this season. He had scores of 77 and 73.

SCOTT LEADS BY FOUR FROM McDOWELL WITH A ROUND TO GO

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
For the second Major in a row Graeme McDowell goes into the final round playing in the last group out.
The 2010 US Open champion, second in that event last month, is four behind Australian Adam Scott after a third-round 67 at Royal Lytham and St Annes.
McDowell, pictured, was only level par for the day with six to play, but then birdied the 13th, 14th and 17th to earn himself a head-to-head with Scott.
While being in the final group did not work out as he hoped in San Francisco, it did at Pebble Beach two years ago.
The Northern Irishman, up into joint second with American Brandt Snedeker, came from three shots back on the final day to win the 2010 US Open and only last month was one putt away from forcing a play-off in the same event.
And then there is Tiger Woods, one stroke further back in fourth place. He senses a chance to grab his fourth Claret Jug and 15th Major four traumatic years after he last tasted success at the highest level.
Taking advantage of Snedeker running into all sorts of problems following his Major-record-equalling first two rounds, 32 year old Scott moved to 11 under par and back out in front with a 68.
His 199 total is only one outside The Open Championship record set by Tom Lehman on these Lancashire links in 1996.
Snedeker had not been in a single bunker or registered a single bogey in his opening 36 holes - but it was not long before that all changed.
He three-putted the 219 yard fifth from just short of the green and then found sand with his approach to the next.
It cost him another dropped shot after he came out sideways and Scott's six straight pars were good enough to take him back into the lead he had held with his opening 64.
Both birdied the long seventh, but while Scott then added a 25ft putt for another at the 416yd eighth Snedeker ran up his third bogey after finding the rough.
That made the gap three and when it became four after Snedeker visited another bunker at the ninth, the Nashville golfer was not even second on his own.
Alongside him was Woods. Six back after bogeys at the first and third, he re-ignited his bid with an outrageous 60 footer at the difficult sixth and followed with more birdies at the seventh and ninth.
Ideally he would have wanted to be in the final group alongside Scott in order to be able to apply some close-range pressure but he will have to settle for being in the penultimate flight, which tees off at 2.20pm.

"I've just got to execute my game plan," said Woods, who was sceptical about the forecast for 30mph gusting winds.

"I know the forecast is one thing but let's see what actually happens.
"But whether the wind blows or not, I've still got to go out there and post the round that I know I need to post and execute my plan."

Snedeker's day got worse when he ran up a six on the long 11th, but Scott was on in two and not far away from an eagle. The tap-in birdie swept him five clear.

He did bogey the next, but six closing pars kept him in firm control and on course to become Australia's first winner of the title since Greg Norman in 1993 and their first Major champion since Geoff Ogilvy at the 2006 US Open.

Snedeker rallied with two birdies in the last three for a 73 that pushed Woods down to fourth - and it ought to be remembered that Tiger has never come from behind to win a Major yet.

Joint fifth are 2002 winner Ernie Els and former Masters Tournament champion Zach Johnson, who flew to Britain after capturing the John Deere Classic last Sunday.
Paul Lawrie tumbled down the leaderboard with a six-over-par 76 for a two-over tally of 212. The 1999 Open champion reached the turn in level par 34 with a bogey at the sixth and a birdie 2 at the short ninth.
Lawrie dropped a shot at the 10th but was only one over for the round with five holes to play. But holes 14 to 18 cost him five shots over par with a bogeys at 14 and 17th and a three-putt, triple bogey 7 at the last hole for 43 shots home.
Paul says on his website:
"Without question, today is the worst I have ever putted in a tournament, which is a pity as I hit it really good today and could easily have shot under par but I finished with 76 which included 40 putts.
"For some reason I misjudged the speed all day on the greens and holed out very poorly. Never mind, it's head down tomorrow and shoot the best."
At least Paul did better than Martin Laird who blew up big time with an 82 after earlier scores of 70 and 69.

Laird slumped from T15 to be the last of the 83 qualifiers after three rounds on 222. He will be first off the tee in the final round.
Laird had fouor double bogeys and five bogeys and only one birdie, at the 12th

TIGHT AT TOP IN PETROFAC MONTROSE PRO-AM

For the second day in a row, three players tied for the top spot in the Tartan Tour event, the Petrofac Montrose Golf Links pro-am.
James McKinnon (Irvine), David Patrick (Elie Sports Centre) and Hayston's Stephen Gray all returned four-under-par 67s and won £952 each.
They finished a shot ahead of the local man, Graeme Brown (Montrose Golf Links). His 68 earned him £535.
Greig Hutcheon (Banchory) and Scott Henderson (Kings Links) had a joint off day. Normally nearer the top than the bottom of the scoreboard, they both recorded 75s today - well out of the money.
Jamie Wales (Kings Acre Golf Centre) led the Montrose Mercantile Ladies Golf Club team of Teresa Dye (handicap 21), Doreen Gordon (18) and Edna Wallwork (14) to victoy in the team event with a net score of 13-under-par 129. They won by two shots.

KELLETT JT SECOND FINISH IN MADRID - WINS EXEMPTION FROM TOUR SCHOOL STAGE ONE

Motherwell's Ross Kellett followed up his first pro win last weekend by finishing joint second in the Peugeot Tour Alps de Madrid in the Spanish capital today.
Kellett shot rounds of 73, 63 and 68 for a total of eight-under-par 205, the same score as Ultsterman Gareth Shaw (68-70-67).
The finished two shots behind the winner, Spain's Santiago Luna who had scores of 73-66-64, who had an albatross 2 at the par-5 14th where he holed his five-wood second from 221yds range.
Kellett will be rueing the double bogey 6 he had at the fourth hole in his first round. After bogeying the second and third in his final round, the Scot covered his last 15 holes in four under par with birdies at the seventh, eighth, 12th and 18th.
Kellett is currently second in the Alps Tour Order of Merit with 20,559 Euros won and because he is in the top six at the conclusion of this tournament in Madrid, he gains exemption from the European Tour School First Stage.
Kellett is also leading the Alps Tour Rookie of the Year table from 2011 Walker Cup player Jack Senior.

KOFSTAD GRANDSTAND FINISH WINS CHALLENGE TOUR EVENT

CHALLENGE TOUR REPORT
from Sarah Gwynn
Norwegian Espen Kofstad finished eagle-birdie-par to claim his maiden Challenge Tour victory in the Doubletree by Hilton Acaya Open, edging out Joachim Hansen of Denmark at the last hole today.
A superb five under par 65 took the 24 year old to nine under, but he was helped by Hansen’s bogey at the 18th, when he failed to get up and down from the rough at the back of the green.
Until those last three holes, it had looked to be Hansen’s day, the Dane carding four birdies and an eagle – at the first hole, which was a whisker away from being an albatross – but Kofstad turned it around in sublime style.
He drained a 40-footer at the 17th to tie with Hansen at the top of the leaderboard, and showed nerves of steel to hole out on the last for par after the Dane bogeyed.
“I’m so excited I’m shaking like a leaf,” said Kofstad. “I’m buzzing. It’s so great to win. The shots just came off all day and I’m so proud of the way I played, as I’ve never been in the lead in a final round before.
LUCKY BOUNCE
“I had a lucky bounce on the 16th with my second shot and it went to within three feet of the pin, and then I made the putt across the green from the left edge on the 17th. That was unreal.
“I had a feeling it might be my day when I holed the bunker shot on the first, but then Joachim was playing amazingly well and flushing every shot. He was unlucky hitting it long on the last and it’s tough to see a fellow pro do that. I was fully expecting a play-off. It’s unfortunate for him, but he’s played unbelievably all week.
“That putt on the 17th was definitely the highlight of the day. It just magically dropped and there were quite a few people watching who went crazy.
“I’m going to try and play as much as I can in the next few weeks, while I’m playing well. There’s no point taking time off if I’m in this form, I’ve just got to keep going.
“The goal for the season was always to finish in the top 15 in the Rankings, so this will obviously help a lot in achieving that.”
Hansen, 21, has been in fine form of late, making the cut in his last four appearances before this week and finishing no worse than 28th from those. He was bitterly disappointed not to have at least gone into a play-off, but credited Kofstad’s final charge.
SO DISAPPOINTED
“I’m so disappointed with the last hole,” he said. “I knew Espen was playing well and I couldn’t think of victory, but to make bogey on the last is extremely tough to take. Well played to Espen, though. He played so well all day and to finish like that was unbelievable.
Finland’s Roope Kakko took third place with a final round 68, it was a productive day for Englishmen Matthew Southgate (65) and Lloyd Kennedy (64) to finish fourth and fifth respectively.
