SIR BOB SHOOTS A 66 - TEN YEARS BELOW HIS AGE!

From Michael Gibbons
At the age of 76 years young, Sir Bob Charles added another extraordinary chapter to his golfing legend at the European Senior Tour’s Bad Ragaz PGA Seniors Open by beating his age by an incredible ten strokes to move into a share of third place on four under par.
Charles’s incredible first round 66 – which smashes his own previous Senior Tour record of five strokes less than his age – started with a terrible drive into the left-hand rough at the Golf Club Bad Ragaz which led to a bogey five.
But the man from New Zealand – the first left-hander to win a Major at The 1963 Open Championship – then proceeded to put on a golfing master class as he rolled back the years and rolled home the putts to claim five birdies and join the six-way tie for third place, two strokes behind leader David J Russell.
“That was one of those dream rounds,” smiled Charles, who played alongside another 76 year old legend, Gary Player, who posted his own exceptional round of 72.
“I have just bettered my age by ten shots – I have never got anywhere near that figure before. It’s quite remarkable really. I hope it’s a record.
“I have had some great days in my career and this is one of them. I felt young again. My putting certainly reminded of the days of my youth. I hit a lot of good shots and never missed any short putts and that was the secret really. I made two really big 15-foot par putts to and they were crucial.
“I take a lot of satisfaction from today. These days that is the goal and today was, as I said, like a dream and one I will never forget.”
Stephen McAllister leads the Scottish challenge after a two under par 68 left him one stroke ahead of Sam Torrance and Bill Longmuir, while Gordon Brand Jnr matched Player’s two over par 72.

RUSSELL KNOX MAKES CUT - BUT TIGER LIKELY TO MISS IT

Russell Knox has made the cut in this weekend's US PGA Tour event - but Tiger (back-in-form) Woods looks certain to miss it. Same goes for Phil Mickelson.
Bad weather forced a long delay in the second day's play in the Greenbrier Classic at White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. The second round will not be completed until Saturday morning local time.
Webb Simpson has completed his first 36 holes and he leads at nine-under-par 131 with scores of 65-66.
Russell Knox, desperately needing to win some prizemoney to avoid losing his player's card, tied together two good rounds, 69 and 68, to be T36 on 137.
The projected cut mark once the second round is completed is 139 or better to qualify. Well, Tiger Woods has shot 71-69 for 140 and Phil Mickelson is even worse off - a pair of 71s for 142.

MARCEL SIEM LEADS BY ONE AT FRENCH OPEN HALFWAY STAGE

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Germany’s Marcel Siem will take a one-shot lead into round three of the Alstom Open de France following a late surge by Alexander Noren at Le Golf National.
Siem, who finished sixth on home soil at last month’s BMW International Open, hit the front courtesy of a second successive 68, which was completed following a mid-afternoon storm that saw play suspended for around 80 minutes.
He was briefly joined by Noren after the Swede recorded birdies at 14, 15 and 16 to reach five under for his second round.
However, Noren then found water at the last and made bogey to drop back into second, one shot clear of Denmark’s Anders Hansen and South African George Coetzee.
David Lynn, Francesco Molinari and Raphael Jacquelin shared fifth on three under, but world number three Lee Westwood - who had reached that mark after 10 holes - was back at one over - having taken three penalty drops on his back nine.
DOUBLE BOGEY AT 17

Starting on the tenth, Siem birdied 14 but double bogeyed 17 before picking up a shot at each of the first, third, fifth and seventh holes to end on six under par.
He said: “If you shoot a few under on the golf course, it doesn't matter what are the conditions, it's a good score. I've shot two times three under now, so I'm very happy and I hope I keep it going like that.”
The 31 year old admitted that the suspension in play came at the right time for him.
“I had just made double bogey before that. Then on 18, would have been my first shot after the lightning. I was a bit steamy there, and actually it was good for me I reckon that we got called off the course,” he added.

FLAT CALM IN THE END
“It was nearly flat calm in the end. On the last four holes, there was a little breeze off the left, half a club of wind. It was very comfortable and nice to play and I'm really happy that I made something out of it.”
Noren, who birdied the sixth and 11th prior to his trio of birdies on the way in, was also delighted to be among the later starters on day two.
“It was tough the first nine holes, and then we got really lucky on the back nine,” he said.
“I hit a lot of fairways and a lot of greens, and then got a lot of good putts on the back nine coming in, so it was a steady round and I’m really pleased."
Hansen, beginning on the tenth, parred his first five holes before making birdies at 15, 16 and 18 with a sole blemish on his first nine a bogey at 17.
SUPERB APPROACH

He then made birdie threes at four and six, the latter courtesy of a superb approach from just off the left side of the fairway. However, a bogey four on his penultimate hole saw him drop back.
Hansen said: “I'm very proud of myself to keep doing what I've done, even though there's a few shots that didn't come as I wanted them to, but all in all, I'm still in the learning process of trying to figure this thing out.
“To go out on a course like this with a few new things in the golf swing is not exactly easy. When you get out there, you have to trust what you're doing.”
Westwood, meanwhile, retained a positive outlook despite his troubles on the homeward nine.
“It's that kind of golf course.  You don't have to be far off,” he said.
“I would liked to have played a bit better coming in but I'm not out of it.”

RAMSAY AND GALLACHER MISS THE CUT
Biggest shock of the day for Scottish followers of the European Tour was the failure of Richie Ramsay and Stephen Gallacher to make the cut. Ramsay followed up a 69 with a lacklustre 77 (39-38) and he missed out by one shot.
So too did Gallacher who went from a smooth 70 to a very ragged 76.
Scots who are played at the weekend are the consistent David Drysdale, tied eighth on 140 (70-70), Craig Lee, tied 46th on 144 (73-71) and Marc Warren (76-69) and Scott Jamieson (71-74) who hit the limit mark of 145 in joint 59th place.

DEBUT MAN LINDSAY BLAIR WINS SCOTTISH SENIORS TITLE

And the winner is ... Lindsay Blair from Grangemouth. Image by courtesy of Steve Ellis.

NEWS RELEASE FROM THE SCOTTISH GOLF UNION
Lindsay Blair of Grangemouth Golf Club held his nerve to land a debut success and the biggest title of his golfing career at the Scottish Seniors Stroke Play Championship today.
The 55-year-old Scot, eligible for the seniors’ event for the first time, claimed a narrow one-stroke victory over the links of Luffness New after a superb up-and-down at the last.
During a difficult three days for scoring on the east coast, with play delayed for a lengthy spell yesterday due to fog, Blair posted a nine-over-par total to edge out Liberton’s Robert Jack.
The Stirlingshire County player, a member at Grangemouth for 24 years and a six-time club champion, posted scores of 74, 70 and 75 for a 219 total over the demanding par-70 course where the rough was high.
Blair used all his powers of recovery to muster what proved a clinching bogey at the last, putting up the ridge off the left-hand fringe to get down in two.
IN SUPERB CONDITION
“I didn’t believe I could win, so I just did my best,” admitted Lindsay. “I didn’t realise how big an event it is, playing in it for the first time, so that probably helped me.
“The course was in superb condition, but it was really tough. I putted well the whole week, especially my long putting like at the last. It’s an amazing win for me.”
Blair’s win was also tinged with a hint of sadness, his famous triumph coming exactly a month after the funeral of his father, Peter. “He was my No 1 fan and he would have been proud of me,” added Lindsay, a one-handicapper who had already posted two top-12 finishes in Order of Merit events this season.
“The competition was played in fantastic spirit in difficult conditions and I’m delighted.”
Jack was the only man to match the par on the final day and his rounds of 73, 78 and 70 for 220 saw him surge up the leaderboard to within a shot of the victor.
COSTLY CLOSING BOGEYS
The Lothians man was to rue bogeys at the closing two holes which saw him just miss out.
Former shinty player John Fraser (Royal Burgess) finished joint third on 223, alongside long-time leader John Baldwin (Sunningdale), with Callander’s Gordon Macdonald sharing fifth with Andrew Stracey (Denham).
Bladwin claimed the over-65s first prize, but dropped out of the chase for the trophy with a final round 81. Fellow Englishman and defending champion, Charles Banks, shared 14th spot.
The challenge of last year’s Order of Merit winner, Tulliallan’s Bob Stewart, also petered out after his closing score of 80.
Next year’s Scottish senior men's amateur championship will be held on the Fife links of Elie.

ELLIOT SALTMAN SHOOTS A 61 TO WIN EUROPR0 TOUR £10,000 PRIZE

£10,000 and a crystal trophy for Elliot Saltman

Lothians man Elliot Saltman began the week by coming through a qualifying play-off to earn a place in the Open and he finished it by breaking the course record to win the Audi Cork Irish Masters by eight shots at Fota Island Resort and move top of the PGA EuroPro Tour Order of Merit
At the start of the final round in Cork, the Archerfield Links man was tied for the lead with Australian Rika Batibasaga and Welshman Stuart Manley but a superb ten-under-par 61 saw the Scotsman to a comfortable victory.
He opened with a par at the first and then hit four consecutive birdies from the second. He completed the remaining four front-nine holes to par and made his fifth birdie of the round at the 10th. A birdie three followed at 12 before back-to-back threes at 14 and 15, both par fours.
He then completed his round with back-to-back par breakers at 17 and 18 to returne to the clubhouse to sign for 61 and collect his £10,000 winner’s cheque.
“I have always had that there to be honest,” he reflected after the round. “I felt it was a matter of time until I came out and produced something like that.
“Last time I was in Ireland [for the Ulster Bank Open at Galgorm Castle, Ballymena] I got five under in the last round and came second, and then to shoot a combined six under par at Open Qualifying meant my confidence was flying coming to Fota Island.
“I made a target of nine under for the tournament so to shoot ten under in one round was a great performance that I am very proud of.
“Fota Island is an immaculate golf course. It is very, very good and a lot of the players have been giving it very high praise. Everything was immaculate, it was a very well-run tournament and it is something Fota Island should be proud of.”
MANLEY MOVES UP
Manley (Machynys Peninsula) has moved up to fourth on the Tour Order of Merit after finishing second and collecting £5,000. The top five golfers at the end of the season will be rewarded with a card for the 2013 Challenge Tour, putting them just one step away from the European Tour.
The Welshman signed for a 69 at the end of his final round, beating Scotland’s Duncan Stewart to second by one shot.
Stewart (Grantown on Spey), who has sold shares in himself to cover his tour expenses (Paul Lawrie is one of his "investors") had been tied for fourth overnight and shot two under par in his final round to move to five under for the tournament.
Batibasaga (Indoorphilly GC) carded a three-over-par 74 in his final round and finished the competition tied for 15th.
The PGA EuroPro Tour remains in Ireland for the Kingspan Concra Wood Open, which gets underway next Wednesday, July 11.
