ENGLAND SQUAD FOR CHIBERTA GRAND PRIX AND BIARRITZ CUP

NEWS RELEASE FROM ENGLAND GOLF
Improvement on past performances is always a goal in golf and Josh Loughrey (Wrag Barn, Wiltshire) will be aiming to do just that after being named in a six-strong squad to represent England Golf in the Chiberta Grand Prix in Biarritz later this week (July 5 to 8).
The group will also compete in the Biarritz Cup next week (July 11 to 13).
Loughrey finished equal fourth in the Grand Prix and tied sixth in the Biarritz Cup a year ago so will be eager to move up the leaderboard this time and is one of four players in the group from the south west.
The other members heading for France are, Craig Adams (Farrington, Somerset), Ryan Evans (Wellingborough, Northamptonshire), Tom Harris (Castletown, Isle of Man), Jimmy Mullen (Royal North Devon, Devon), and Jordan Smith (Bowood G and CC, Wiltshire).
Loughrey, 21, a member of the England ‘A’ squad, won the Scrutton Jug for the lowest aggregate from the Brabazon and Berkshire Trophies last year and was a member of the Wiltshire team that won the English County Championship for the first time.
It followed a successful season in which he finished tied third in the Darwin Salver, fourth in the Duncan Putter, and fifth in the Berkshire Trophy. Earlier this year, he spent four months in Australia playing for the Waverley club in their annual Pennant Series.
Adams, 33, will be making his first overseas trip with England Golf but is a solid performer in the south west. He recently finished joint third in the South West Qualifier at Cumberwell Park and tied 11th in last year’s Brabazon Trophy at Burnham and Berrow.
Evans, 25, is another debutant for England Golf.
TOP TEN FINISHES
Seventh in the South of England Open Amateur last year at Walton Heath, he finished eighth in this year’s Berkhamsted Trophy and equal ninth in the recent France Open Amateur at Chantilly.
Harris, 18, also played at Chiberta last year, finishing joint 15th. Another member of ‘A’ Squad, he was the Isle of Man boy champion in 2010 and finished joint third in the Junior County Champions tournament at Woodhall Spa. Last year he won the Fairhaven Trophy and booked a place in the upcoming Brabazon Trophy by finishing fourth in the Southern Qualifier at Rochester & Cobham.
Mullen, 18, is also tasting his first overseas trip with England Golf. Placed sixth in the Junior County Champions tournament at Woodhall Spa last year, he finished equal seventh in the West of England Stroke Play and South of England Boys Championships.
He reached the first round of the Australian Amateur in the winter and has since finished tied third in the Lagonda Trophy at Gog Magog and equal eighth in the South West Qualifying.
CHAMPION AT COLLEGE
Smith, 19, another member of the England ‘A’ Squad,  was the Intercollegiate Tour Players champion for two years during his time at Filton College in Bristol and was an England Schools international. Also a member of the County Championship-winning Wiltshire team at Ganton last year, he joined Loughrey in Australia earlier this year as part of the Waverley team in the Pennant Series.
He also represented England Golf in the Costa Ballena Tournament in Spain and recently finished joint eighth in the South West Qualifying
The Chiberta Grand Prix is medal stroke play over 72 holes with a halfway cut. There is also a team event over the first two days, the best two of the three cards to count.

MCSPORRAN MISSES CALL FOR CRIEFF PLAYOFF

Greig McSporran (Kinross Golf Courses) should have been involved in a seven-man play-off for six places at the conclusion of the regulation 18-hole First Qualifying competition at Crieff Golf Club for the Gleneagles Scottish PGA championship from July 23-26.
But Greig, one of the early starters, went back to his golf-shop base after returning a three-over-par 74 and did not make it back in time when he heard that he was one of seven players with that score who were required to play-off for six places, i.e. to eliminate one.
Tournament director Roy Murray said: "Greg did not answer the call when called to the tee for the play-off, which was unfortunate for him. He was still on his way back to Crieff course from Kinross. So his non-appearance did away with the need to have a play-off."
Leading qualifiers were former Scotland amateur international Keir McNicol (Gullane) and Iain McNab (Dundonald Links), both on the one-under-par 70 mark.
Qualifying competition No 2 - from which 14 players will go forward to the championship - will be held at Crieff tomorrow (Tuesday).
The Monday qualifiers for Gleneagles were:
Par 71
70 Keir McNicoll (Gullane), Iain McNab (Dundonald Links).
72 Scott Grieve (Turnhouse), Jamie Fraser (Renaissance), Gavin Cook (Prestonfield), Jonathan Lomas (unatt), Stewart Savage (Cawder).
73 Michael Patterson (Kilmacolm), Ken Campbell (Machrihanish), Greg Paxton (Ralston), Stuart Williamson (West Kilbide), Kenneth Walker (Castle Park), Alistair Mackenzie (Renaissance Club).
74 Terry Mathieson (Murcar Links), Jonathan Sharp (Carrick on Loch Lomond), Martin Lawrence (Newmachar), Iain Colquhoun (Dundonald Links), Andrew McMahon (Grove), Paul Robinson (Largs).
NON-QUALIFIERS INCLUDED
74 Greig McSporran (Kinross Golf Course). (Failed to appear in time for play-off)
75 Lee Vannet (Carnoustie Links), Emma Fairnie (Gullane).
76 Heather MacRae (Gleneagles), Malcolm Isaacs (Nairn Dunbar).

HUGH HUNTER'S CLACKMANNAN COUNTY NEWS

CLACKMANNAN MEN SHINE IN THE EAST

In the East of Scotland Championship held over 72 holes at Lundin Links at the weekend, there was some success for two locals.  Best performance in this Scottish Golf Union Order of Merit event came from Dollar’s Scott Borrowman who is currently playing to a much better standard, a reminder of his form when he won the Scottish Youths Championship a few years back.
Scott eased his way towards the top of the field with steady rounds, and when he holed from 15ft at the 12th he was sitting in second place on four under par, still five shots behind leader Allyn Dick, the eventual winner.
However, further birdies evaded Scott and the combination of a lost ball at the 17th and a sub-par display from his playing partner meant that he had to be content with a share of third place at three-under-par. With the Scottish Amateur coming up at the end of July, Scott must be pleased with his golfing form.
Alloa’s Jamie Aitken started with a fine 2 under par 69,easily made the cut, but fell back on the last 36 holes…… he is proving a good competitor at this level.  The next 72 hole event in the Order of Merit is at Haggs Castle.
Lawrence Allan (Alva), with rounds of 73 and 74, agonisingly missed the cut at Lundin Links by one shot.  This weekend, Lawrence will be off to Sweden, representing Scotland in the European Boys Team event, and locals will be wishing him the best of luck.
These performances will do wonders for their rankings--- Scott is at World Amateur Ranking of 832 (up 190 places), and eighth in the Scottish Golf Union rankings.

CALLUM BACK CHALLENGING AGAIN

In the Challenge Tour event in Italy last week, Tulliallan’s Callum Macaulay recovered a bit from recent missed cuts finishing 44th  with rounds of 72, 68, 69 and 69, to give  two under par score and earn some euros.  There is no event scheduled this week and next week Callum is off to Lucerne in Switzerland to play in the Credit Suisse event.
The Golf Sempachersee course stretches to some 7147 yards, and one hole measures 624 yards. That would be like hitting from the 17th tee at Schawpark to a hole in the middle of the Sauchie Juniors football park!!

ALEXANDER TROPHY

The Alexander Trophy for Golf Clubs in Stirling and Clackmannan is being played this weekend at Glenbervie Golf club and it is pleasing to see 5 out of the 6 Clackmannan Clubs participating.  Alva won the event at Falkirk Tryst last year, and there will be keen competition with a total of  12  Clubs playing.

TIGER WOODS WINS ATandT NATIONAL TO BEAT JACK NICKLAUS'S US PGA TOUR HAUL OF WINS

FROM THE BBCSPORT.COM WEBSITE
Tiger Woods passed Jack Nicklaus on the all-time US PGA Tour victory list as he won the AT and T National at the Congressional Country Club, Bethseda, Maryland on Sunday.
The former world number one secured his 74th United States Tour win by two shots from Bo Van Pelt after a final round of 69 left him eight under.
It means Woods has won more US PGA events than any golfer bar Sam Snead, who recorded 82 victories on the Tour.
"To do it at 36, I feel like I have a lot of years ahead of me," Woods said after his third win of the year.
"I remember there was a time when people were saying I could never win again. That was, I think, six months ago and here we are."
Overnight leader Brendon de Jonge had a nightmare round of six over par to finish in a share of 11th on one under.
And it was Woods, who began the day one shot behind, who took advantage of the Zimbabwean's collapse, although when he and fellow American Van Pelt both bogeyed the 16th, it was all square with two holes remaining.
But Van Pelt dropped a further shot at each of the final two holes, allowing Woods, who followed up his win at the Memorial Tournament in Ohio last month, to seal victory by two strokes with a pair of pars.
Van Pelt was level for his final round to finish second on six under, one clear of Australia's Adam Scott.
