ALLYN DICK NOT TOO OLD TO WIN EAST OPEN BY THREE

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Twice past Scottish mid-amateur champion Allyn Dick (Kingsknowe) won the East of Scotland Open amateur stroke-play championship by a comfortable three strokes at Lundin Links today.
At the start of this season Dick was axed from the Scottish Golf Union funding list for elite players.
"I was told I was too old at the age of 33!" Dick said at the time.
Well, he was not too old to show this good-class field a clean pair of heels with an eight-under-par total of 276 with rounds of 71, 63, 71 and 71.
It was that eight-under-par second round that put Dick ahead to stay.  He led by three shots from Neil Henderson (Glen) with 18 holes to play but it was defending champion Paul Ferrier (Baberton), semi-finalist in the recent British amateur championship at Royal Troon, who came through to fill the runner-up spot with a closing 69 for 279.
Four players shared third place on 271 - Scott Borrowman (Dollar), the former Scottish youths' champion's best open event performance for some time, Michael Daily (Erskine), Steven Maxwell (Windyhill) and Henderson.

NEIL RAYMOND MAKES SUCCESSFUL BRABAZON TROPHY DEFENCE

FROM THE ENGLAND GOLF WEBSITE
Neil Raymond achieved his goal when he successfully defended the Brabazon Trophy in the wind and rain at Walton Heath. A closing round of 72 left him two strokes clear of playing partner Kevin Phelan from Ireland, also with 72, and three ahead of the fast-finishing Jamie Rutherford.

The 26 year old from Hampshire made history by becoming the first player in over 20 years to win two Brabazons in-a-row and the first for over 50 years to hold the trophy on his own in successive years.
“I’m delighted,” he said modestly, “I didn’t play as well today as in previous rounds but I got the job done. I had a few touchy moments but I made a couple of good saves when I needed.”
The save that counted most came on the 190-yard seventh when he fired a six iron over the green into the trees.
“I had nowhere to drop so I had to move 80 yards away on to a path with a blind shot over the trees and the ball almost went in,” he added. “It lipped out so I only dropped one shot.”
He was out in 37 but birdied the 12th and 13th to get back into red figures and also birdied the long 16th. He made a great sand save at the 206-yard 17th and could even afford to drop a shot at the last and still win comfortably.
Raymond also revealed that he received a pre-round boost from Andrew Sullivan, the man he beat by a stroke at Burnham and Berrow last year.
“Andy sent me a twitter so I called him last night and he said I could win again. He said he threw everything at me last year and it didn’t work, that I knew how to win and that I had done it before.
“It was an unbelievable chat and it was nice to hear this from a European Tour player.”
Phelan, who started the day two behind Raymond, needed a fast start but it eluded him as he double-bogeyed the par-four fourth to match Raymond’s front nine 37, while a couple of back nine birdies still couldn’t make up the difference.
“I had a lot of chances but I couldn’t get any momentum going,” he said. “Neil played well and deserved his victory.”
It was another day when the weather was extremely mixed with sunshine, a testing wind that blew all week, and occasional showers, sometimes heavy. And with temperature dipping it was more like April than July.
But that didn’t deter Rutherford. The 20 year old from Hertfordshire signed for 68, the best round of the day and equal to the best of the week, for 290 and third place.
“I played as well as the previous days but today I holed a few more putts at the right time,” he admitted. “I got it going on the back nine but I made a bad swing on 15 and put my ball on the 16th fairway.
“But I fired a four-iron from there to eight feet and holed for birdie, then I eagled 16. It would have been better but I missed a three-foot birdie at 14.”
Jack Bartlett from Sussex was another to make up ground, a closing 70 hoisting him into fourth place on 291, while Kent’s Michael Saunders, joint ninth on 296, also signed for 70 which would have been a 68 but for a double-bogey six at the last.
The George Henriques Salver for the best performance by a player aged under 20 from Britain and Ireland went to Rutherford while Josh White from Surrey won the Scrutton Jug on 580 for the best aggregate from the Brabazon and Berkshire Trophies.

JAMIE DONALDSON WINS IRISH OPEN AFTER 255 EVENTS WITHOUT SUCCESS

FROM THE BBCSPORT.COM WEBSITE
Jamie Donaldson finally won his first European Tour title at the 255th attempt by taking the Irish Open title at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland today.
The Welshman, 36, carded a final-round six-under 66 to win by four shots. I'm buzzing and I'm so happy to have won on this course - I don't think we have played a better one on the European Tour
Jamie Donaldson Irish Open winner
England's Anthony Wall, Spaniard Rafa Cabrera-Bello and Fabrizio Zanotti of Paraguay were tied for second.
Ireland's Padraig Harrington was in a tie for seventh six shots back, and Northern Ireland's Rory McIlory finished on 11 under with five others.
Donaldson previously had 32 top-10 finishes to his name since turning professional 12 years ago and his last tournament win was the Mauritius Open in 2008.
TRAILING BY TWO
He went into the final round leading by one shot, but at one point was two adrift of Swede Mikael Lundberg who was eight under for the opening 10 holes.
But Donaldson kept his composure to finish with five birdies in the last seven holes, including a 25-foot putt at the last, his closing 66 only one off the lowest round of the week.
The Welshman, who has had to battle with a genetic spine problem during his career, said: "It feels a bit surreal to be honest. I don't think it will sink in until later.
"I'm buzzing and I'm so happy to have won on this course - I don't think we have played a better one on the European Tour."
Reminded of his long wait for a Tour victory, Donaldson added: "It's just been a case of keeping going. I knew that what I was doing was right."
Last week at Sunningdale, Donaldson qualified for the Open Championship, which is being held at at Royal Lytham from July 19 to 22.
The first Irish Open in Northern Ireland since 1953 was watched by sell-out crowds totalling more than 112,000.

ANDREW OLDCORN TOP SCOT WITH SIXTH PLACE FINISH IN GERMANY

From Michael Gibbons
Andrew Oldcorn continued his rich vein of form with a sixth place finish in the Berenberg Bank Masters after a final round 68 left him the leading Scot in the field.
The Edinburgh professional, second in his last two Senior Tour appearances, was left to rue what might have been after a one over par disappointing first round left him too much to do over the next two days, as he finished six shots behind the champion, Tim Thelen from the United States (pictured above with the trophy, by courtesy of Getty Images(c).
Ross Drummond was the next best Scot on eight under and in a tie for eighth place, with the other Scots in the field – Bill Longmuir (+1), Gordon Brand junior (+2), Sam Torrance (+4), Stephen McAllister (+7) and John Chillas (+9) – enduring an uninspiring week at the Golfclub Wörthsee in Munich.
Thelen, however, was truly inspired as he began his final round with an albatross two at the par five first hole before finishing the day with three birdies in his closing four holes to hold off the serious challenge of Peter Fowler, Barry Lane and German legend Bernhard Langer.
GENERAL SUMMARY
Tim Thelen secured his maiden Senior Tour victory in the most thrilling fashion with a final round that included an albatross and a rampaging finish to hold of the challenges of some of the senior game’s biggest names at the Berenberg Bank Masters.
With 2011 Senior Tour Numbers One and Two Peter Fowler and Barry Lane, Mark Mouland and the legendary Bernhard Langer piling on the back nine pressure, Thelen produced three birdies in his closing four holes to card a four under par 68 and slam the door closed on his first victory to secure the €60,000 first prize at the Golfclub Wörthsee in Munich.
“I can’t actually put it into words what this means to me,” said Thelen after being presented with the Berenberg Masters trophy by tournament Ambassador Gary Player.
“To beat these guys – real legends of the game – makes it so special to win here. It feels amazing and I actually can’t believe it right now.
“Guys like Bernhard Langer, Barry Lane, Peter Fowler and Mark Mouland are real legends of the game. When you look at what they have done, what they have won around the world it really puts in into perspective.
“I have won once in my career so I can’t really hold myself up against those guys, but it feel pretty good right now to have come out on top here today.”
MODEST WINNER
The modest Thelen may have a point when analysing the careers of his nearest final round challengers, but for four hours on Sunday afternoon the 51 year old American outplayed them all.
His final round simply could not have got off to a better start as he holed out his perfect six iron approach from 192 yards for an albatross two on the par five.
He suffered an immediate set-back with a double bogey at the next hole, but he steadied the ship after a birdie on the third and, after back-to-back bogeys on the fifth and sixth, he played some stunning golf, holing 20 foot birdie putts on the ninth and tenth before that storming finish of three birdies in his closing holes secured him a three shot victory over Fowler, Lane and Mouland, with Langer a further shot back on 11 under.
“It was so tight out there all day that all I could really do was try to concentrate on my game and not give it up,” said Thelen, who moves to fifth place in the Senior Tour Order of Merit.
“Even when Mark chipped in for eagle on the 12th to go two ahead I still felt I had a chance if I could make some birdies. Obviously I managed to do that and then we had the two shot swing on 15 with Mark making bogey to my birdie, so after that I just got the head down and tried to make some birdies.
“As I said before, this still doesn’t seem believable – someone might have to come up and slap me just to make sure this has happened. It has been a great tournament for everyone, and to win this event is very special.”

GREENOCK GC DOMINATES RENFREWSHIRE CHSHIPS

PRESS RELEASE

The Renfrewshire Golf Union Handicap Championships were contested at Ranfurly Castle Golf Club where, despite heavy rain on the previous day, the course was in excellent condition for the large field competing for the two handicap category trophies.
Despite this being an individual event, entrants from Greenock were very organised for the event with a team bus, individual competitors acting as coaches for others and, it is rumoured, one of them even taking the role of sports psychologist!  The careful planning obviously worked as both trophies will grace the trophy room at Greenock Golf Club until next year.
In the handicap 6 to 12 section, Whinhill’s Mark McCorkell set an early target with 81 less 10 for net 71.  This was bettered by Kenny Weir from Gleddoch who dropped two shots at the seventeenth but recovered to par the last for 81 and a net 70.  This stayed on the leader board until the final game with Jim McNeill from Greenock needing a par at eighteen to match it.  A birdie from Jim saved the count back.
In the 13 plus section, Old Ranfurly’s Sam McDonald finished with two pars for 89 and a net 72.  The same score was recorded by Chris Jones (Whinhill) who took the second place cheque on the better inward half.  Ian Wright from the all-conquering Greenock club stood on the 18th tee needing a par for 83 and a net 68.  With four shots in hand, his final hole six was good enough to ensure that both big cheques were available to celebrate the double victory.

ERSKINE GOLF CLUB JUNIOR OPEN

The seventh Annual Junior Open was held on Friday 29th June at Erskine Golf Club on a day when swimwear was more the order of the day. This however did not deter the 85 participants who took part, including a contingent of 11 players who travelled north for the day from Dumfries and Galloway Junior Section. The course itself stood up to the very wet conditions and remained playable despite the heavy rain. This is due in no small measure to the great work carried out by the green keeping staff over the past few years, and again the course was presented in superb condition for the competition.
The competition was once again sponsored by local family run, Paisley based STRATHAND SECURITY, and their sponsorship was invaluable giving the organisers the opportunity to increase the Prize Fund for the various categories and to provide numerous novelty prizes. .
The Scratch Trophy was a close fought affair with no less than 4 players scoring 73 Gross, Calum Aiken – Kilmacolm, Ross Robertson – Old Course Ranfurly, Colin Edgar – Cochrane Castle and Martin McCorkell – Gleddoch with Calum winning on countback with the better inward half.
The Strathand Trophy, awarded to the player with the best net score saw 2 players, Jonathan Brown and Andrew MacAlpine both from Erskine tied on net 64, but with Jonathan winning on countback with the better inward 9 holes. Both will now see their handicaps reduced as a result of the good scores.
Apart from Jonathan, all the boys mentioned are in the Renfrewshire Golf Union coaching squad giving a sure indication that this is working.
The Girls Trophy generously provided as a result of the STRATHAND SECURITY sponsorship was won by Samantha Cowan – Cochrane Castle. The girls playing in the competition were in the last games out and suffered the worst of the weather, so well done to them for completing their rounds.
This is a Renfrewshire Junior Order of Merit Competition and Ross Robertson – Old Course Ranfurly currently leads both the Under 18 and Under 15 Competitions, with Colin Edgar – Cochrane Castle lying second in the Under 18’s and Kyle Turner – Cochrane Castle second in the Under15’s.

LEST WE FORGET: Aberdonian Bendelow who designed first US public course

JULY 1, 1895
Van Cortlandt Park, located in the Bronx in New York City, was opened this day 117 years ago.
The golf course, the first public course in the United States, was designed by Aberdeen-born Tom Bendelow.
The park is named for Stephanus Van Cortlandt, the first native-born mayor of New York, and the Van Cortlandt family, which was prominent in the area during the Dutch and English colonial periods. The park is today operated by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation.

ROBERT ARNOTT STRIKES AGAIN TO WIN AT HAYSTON

Bishopbriggs Golf Range professional Robert Arnott scored his sixth one-day win of the season - and his second in three days - on the Tartan Tour with a fine round of six-under-par 66 to head a big field of 51 players in the Hayston Charity pro-am at Hayston Golf Club, Glasgow on Saturday.
Arnott, following up his Thursday success at Douglas Park, had an eagle 2 at the third and birdies at the long second, fifth, short eighth, 10th, long 16th and 17th. He dropped shots at the short fourth and short 16th in collecting the £1,408 top prize ahead of three players on 65 - David Orr (Mearns Castle Golf Academy), Thailand-based Kenny Walker (Castle Park) and Banchory's Greig Hutcheon each of whom earned £868.
Orr had eight birdies but, on the debit side, a double bogey 6 at the seventh and a bogey at the short 14th.
Walker had a five-birdie, bogey-free 65 while Hutcheon had six birdies and one bogey.
In a tight finish to the pro-am section, two teams tied on 16-under-par 54. Host club pro Stephen Gray's trio of Billy Peterkin (handicap 17), Scott Winter (18) and Malcolm Laverock (7) won on the better second nine from the team of Jason McCreadie (Buchanan Castle).
+Arnott's latest success brought his season's earnings up to £11,036 and he is lying second in the PGA of Scotland money table to Greig Hutcheon (£12,868) with last year's leading money-winner, Stephen Gray, in third place with £10,532.
