HARRINGTON HARD ON LEADER BOURDY'S HEELS IN IRISH OPEN

FROM EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Frenchman Grégory Bourdy continues to lead the Irish Open but Padraig Harrington is hard on his heels after the three-time Major Champion posted his second successive round of 67, much to the delight of the huge crowds who had gathered at Royal Portrush Golf Club.
Having compiled what he considered the finest round of his European Tour career on the opening day, Bourdy joked that his second day 67 was “maybe the second best round of my career” as he moved to 12 under par at the midway stage of the €2million event.
FOSTER ONE OFF THE PACEEngland’s Mark Foster is one stroke off the lead after a flawless round of 67, whilst his compatriot Paul Waring – playing his first European Tour event after a year-long absence with a wrist injury – is in a share of third place on ten under par alongside Italian Lorenzo Gagli (66) and Harrington (67).
Harrington was again taken aback by the record crowds in attendance, with 27,194 lining the fairways of the Dunluce Links to cheer on their heroes including Northern Ireland’s trio of Major Champions, Darren Clarke (four under par), Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell (both five under) – all of whom comfortably made the cut.
Harrington said: “It sounded like an Open Championship coming down 18. The crowds were clapping us from 150 yards short of the green, as they were all day. Particularly on the last six holes, when the rain went away and the umbrellas went down, there was rapturous applause and cheering as we approached the green.
PLAYERS APPRECIATE SUPPORT
“It’s unique, and it’s great to see. I think all of the players, especially the players down the rankings, aren’t used to this, so they really appreciate it. We all appreciate it, because it’s great to play golf tournaments amongst big crowds.”
The roars will be deafening if Harrington can win the Irish Open for a second time, but a certain Frenchman is determined to gate-crash the party.

BARRIE EDMOND REGAINS ABERDEEN LINKS CHAMPIONSHIP

Barrie Edmond, the 2010 champion, beat Bon Accord clubmate Matty Greig by 3 and 2 in the rescheduled final of the Aberdeen Links championship.
Rescheduled from last Friday when the course was flooded, the conditions were only marginally better.
Greig lost a ball off the tee at the 13th, extending Edmond's lead to three holes - possibly the clinching moment of the final. Greig won back the 14th but a birdie by Edmond at the next restored his three-hole advantage.
Greig, 32, was making his first appearance in the final. Edmond, 34, was roughly level par at the finish, which represented very good golf in conditions which were very wet overhead and also underfoot.

ANDREW OLDCORN HAS TO FIND A WAY TO BEAT LEGEND LANGER

From Michael Gibbons:
After two successive second place finishes, Andrew Oldcorn is looking to strike while the iron is hot and grab his first Senior Tour win of the season at this weekend’s Berenberg Bank Masters.
If he is to take his first Senior title of 2012 at the Golfclub Wörthsee on the outskirts of Munich, the Scot will have to overcome a true legend of the game in his own back yard – none other than the great Bernhard Langer.
Langer, back home to support the Senior Tour event that is promoted by his brother, Erwin, will be the overwhelming favourite to take the title in front of an adoring German public but Oldcorn is hoping to sneak under the radar and continue the outstanding form of the past few weeks that saw him finish second in the PGA Seniors at Slaley Hall before another runner-up finish in Holland last week.
Oldcorn is certainly the form Scot on the Senior Tour for the moment, and he is joined at Wörthsee by six of his fellow countrymen including former Ryder Cup Captain Sam Torrance.

RAYMOND RUSSELL SHARING EUROPEAN CHALLENGE TOUR LEAD

FROM SARAH GWYNN
Home favourite Marco Crespi joined a three-way tie for the lead at the halfway point of the Challenge Provincia di Varesi after a four under par second round of 66.
The 33 year old joined Argentine Daniel Vancsik, who impressed with a 65, and Scot Raymond Russell, who signed for a 67, on ten under par, while Switzerland’s Raphael De Sousa carded a 67 to be one shot back.
Crespi has missed the cut in his last three tournaments following his maiden Challenge Tour win in the Telenet Trophy last month, but spent time practising at Golf Club Varese last week to prepare, which is looking like a shrewd decision.
“I’ve been playing very badly ever since I won, so last week I took a week off to work with my coach and practise hard here,” he said. “Fortunately the preparation is paying off.
“I played very well on the front nine. I’m not doing anything spectacular, just trying to keep the ball on the fairways, which is what you have to do on this course as the rough is punishing. I missed a couple of putts on the back nine but overall I’m very happy to be leading the tournament going into the weekend.
“It would be great to win in my home country, and I believe I can do it if I just keep playing steadily.”
Russell’s second round was more of a battle than his first, when he shot 63, and he was delighted to remain in contention.
“I struggled on the front nine and didn’t play particularly well, but hung in there and made a few good up and downs,” said the 39 year old, who missed almost all of last season with a debilitating virus. “That was the best it could have been.
“Fortunately I gathered myself and got it together on the back nine and had a good finish. I’m very happy with that considering how I played on the front nine. It was damage limitation at that point.
“It’s a great golf course but it’s extremely hot. Not only is it difficult to concentrate, the ball is travelling a little bit further so you have to factor that in.
“It’s great to give myself a chance, that’s all I’m trying to do. There’s a lot of golf to be played between now and Sunday afternoon.”
Vancsik set the pace in the morning with his second consecutive round of 65, a feat he attributes to simply staying patient.
He said: “For 11 holes I played very well, but on the 12th I made a mistake and dropped a shot, and for the last six holes it felt like I was fighting the course. I lost my concentration a bit, which is the reason my score is not lower.
“The last few weeks I’ve been playing much better. The problem is that when I miss one shot it usually ends up in a double bogey. But this week if I’ve missed a shot I’ve managed to save par or at the worst make a bogey. That’s the difference.
“I’ve been working very hard with my coach for the last two weeks, working on not just my swing but on my focus, concentration and patience. On the Challenge Tour you have to be very patient. There have been times when I’ve been in a good position and thought about winning, and then everything has gone wrong. I’m trying hard to take it shot by shot and not think too far ahead.”
Alessandro Tadini is another player trying not to get ahead of himself, but he has the advantage of local knowledge, having grown up playing the course.
A second successive 66 leaves him well placed at eight under, although he admits he is trying to quell the excitement of his army of supporters.
He said: “I know the course very well because I’ve played here all my life. I know where the good places are to hit the ball and where not to hit it. I am very familiar with the greens too, so if my putting is good I know I will hole many putts.
“It would be fantastic to win here. I have many, many family and friends here this week so it is already very special to be playing a Challenge Tour event in my town. But to win the title would be a dream come true. Everyone wants me to do it but I’m trying not to think about it too much because it will be very hard and I’ll have to continue playing very well.”
SCOTSWATCH
Raymond Russell remained at the top of the leaderboard at the Challenge Provincia di Varese, sharing a one shot lead with Argentine Daniel Vancsik and Italy’s Marco Crespi after a three under par 67.
The 39 year old did not meet the heights of his first round 63, but battled well and had three birdies in his last three holes to stay in contention.
“I struggled on the front nine and didn’t play particularly well, but hung in there and made a few good up and downs,” said Russell, who missed nearly all of last season with a virus.
There’s a lot of golf to be played between now and Sunday afternoon though.”
Russell’s compatriot Andrew McArthur was also well placed, carding a two under par 68 to move to eight under overall.
He said: “I didn’t putt as well as yesterday, but other than that I played fairly solid. I just missed a couple of short putts. A couple of three-putts on the card is always going to hinder you a bit.
“But I had plenty of chances and I’m still just focusing on hitting it straight. I’m not getting ahead of myself. You can’t think about winning golf tournaments when you’ve been playing as badly as I have. But I’m pleased to be in the mix going into the weekend and I’ll just keep trying to do what I’ve been doing, as it’s worked well so far.”
Scott Henry, who is three under, and Callum Macaulay, level par, were the only other Scots to make the halfway cut at Golf Club Varese in northern Italy.
