ALASTAIR FORSYTH BEATEN IN PLAY-OFF FOR LAST PLACES AT SUNNINGDALE

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE RandA
England’s James Morrison can look forward to his first appearance at The Open Championship after leading the qualifiers at the 36-hole International Final Qualifying -Europe event over the Old and New courses at Sunningdale today.
Morrison put together rounds of 63 and 68 for an eight-under-par total of 131 and a two shot victory over compatriot, Sam Walker, who had to endure a 500 mile dash from the Scottish Highlands before carding rounds of 68 and 65 to get into the field for The Open on six-under-par 133.
Welshman, Jamie Donaldson, fired a course record equalling 62 on the New course to share third place with Spain’s Alejandro Canizares, Australia’s Marcus Fraser and Englishmen, Richard Finch, Ross Fisher and Matthew Baldwin on five-under-par 134.
FORSYTH BEATEN IN PLAY-OFF
The final places in the field for the 141st Open Championship went to Denmark’s Thorbjorn Olesen and England’s Lee Slattery who finished on four-under-par 135 in regulation play and then survived the subsequent sudden-death play-off against Oliver Fisher, Oscar Floren and Alastair Forsyth. Englishman, Fisher, and Floren from Sweden both went out on the first extra hole. Olesen birdied the second extra hole to book his place at The Open before Forsyth missed from three feet on the third extra hole to allow his English rival through.
Morrison went out at 6.48 am on the New course in what was the third group on the golf course and quickly put his name on the top of the leaderboard with a six-under-par 63 which included seven birdies and just one dropped shot at the 446-yard par-4 11th. After lunch he raced to the turn in three-under-par 33 on the Old Course and then came home in level par 35 for a two-under-par 68 which confirmed his place at Royal Lytham and St Annes on July 19-22.
“This means a lot to me,” said the 26-year-old from Chertsey whose wife, Jessica, gave birth to their first child, Finley, just 12 days ago.
PAINFUL MEMORIES OF 2011
“Last year I bogeyed the last two holes to miss out by just one shot so there was a few anxious moments coming down the stretch but I played solid and holed some good putts for pars.
“I’m really looking forward to making my debut in The Open,” he added. “I remember when I was a kid coming home from school at 4.30 and watching it on TV so it will be great to be a part of it.”
Sam Walker spent the previous day winning a play-off at the rain-shortened Scottish Hydro Challenge at Macdonald Spey Valley Golf Club in the Scottish Highlands but then flew back to Birmingham before setting out for Sunningdale at 4.00am this morning.
He opened with a 68 on the New course but then carded a 65 on the Old which included six birdies and an eagle on the 503-yard par-5 14th hole. It was enough to move him up to second behind Donaldson and to give him his first start in The Open Championship.
“I played in the 2007 US Open Championship at Oakmont but this will be the first time I have ever played in The Open,” said the 34 year-old Englishman whose father, Tim, was a semi-professional footballer.
“To be honest I was so tired I don’t know how I did it. I felt a bit like a robot. I just put my head down and concentrated on putting one foot in front of the other and it seemed to work. It has been a massive 24 hours for me.”
NEW DAD JAMIE FINISHES THIRD
Welshman Jamie Donaldson is another player who has had a child recently. His son, Max, was born three months ago but that did not stop the 36-year-old from Tredegar from adding a seven under par 62 on the New course to his opening 72 on the Old to move from 51st up into third place on the leaderboard.
The 62 equalled the score recorded by Graeme Storm while qualifying for The Open in 2009 and was matched Colin Montgomerie 12 months later.
Donaldson’s run started with a birdie on the 409-yard 3rd hole. He also fired birdies of the 6th, 8th and 9th before completing a flawless round with further birdies on the 12th, 15th and 16th.
“I played terrible this morning but this afternoon was much better,” said the man who lost out in a play-off in this event two years ago. “I thought about pulling out at lunch but I haven’t played much golf since Max was born so I decided to go out again and see if I could find some form.”
Ryder Cup player, Ross Fisher, finished second behind James Heath at the 2004 Lytham Trophy and he can look forward to another trip to the famous Lancashire course after putting together rounds of 64 and 70 which will give him his sixth successive appearance in golf's oldest Major.
Fisher’s best finish to date came in 2009 at Turnberry where he challenged for a while before dropping into a share 13th place behind Stewart Cink but he can look forward to another chance at winning the Claret Jug.
The same cannot be said for some of the biggest names in the Sunningdale field.
Italy’s Matteo Manassero, the top-ranked player in the field on the Official World Golf Ranking, carded two rounds of 68 to miss the play-off by one shot. He was joined on three-under-par 136 by 2010 Ryder Cup captain, Colin Montgomerie, who missed out after scoring 66 and 70, while his successor, Jose Maria Olazabal, was another casualty, having opened promisingly with a 67 on the New course but then faltering with a 71 on the Old.
OLAZABAL DISAPPOINTED
“It’s disappointing,” said the 46 year-old Spaniard, who finished third in the 1992 Open Championship at Muirfield and then tied third 13 years later at St Andrews.
“I had it going but then hit a couple of loose shots coming home.
“That the story of my game at the moment,” he added. “I see sparks of good play but I’m just not consistent enough. I’m letting too many shots leak away.”
The only route Manassero, Montgomerie and Olazabal now have into The Open is by finishing as the leading non-exempt player within the top five at either the Alstrom Open de France at Golf National, Paris, on July 5-8 or the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open at Castle Stuart, Inverness, the following weekend.

OPTICAL EXPRESS TOUR SUCCESS CONTINUES AT DUDDINGSTON TOMORROW

NEWS RELEASE FROM PGA IN SCOTLAND
Duddingston Golf Club in Edinburgh will host the fourth “Optical Express PGA Tour” event of 2012, tomorrow and Wednesday this week (June 26 and 27).
With a field of over 100 players, the Duddingston tournament has attracted the highest number of entries so far in this series, and again there is a mixture of Challenge, EuroPro and Tartan Tour players in the draw.
Former Ryder Cup star Ronan Rafferty is amongst those who are due to tee up, and he is paired in the first round with Russell Weir, who has returned to playing in domestic tournaments this season after spending many years on the European Seniors Tour.
West Linton’s Gareth Wright, winner at Dundonald, and David Patrick (Elie), who triumphed in the Tain/Brora tournament, are both competing, as are seven Tartan Tour regulars who played in the Scottish Hydro Challenge at Spey Valley last week.
Included amongst those is Scott Henderson (Kings Links), who recently won three times on the Tartan Tour in a 10- day stretch.
Michael MacDougall secretary of the PGA in Scotland commented “I’m delighted to see such a large number of entries. As a more traditional “inland” type of course, Duddingston will provide a different test for the players to the ones that they have faced in the three previous events, and it’ll be interesting to see who emerges as the winner this time around.”
David Moulsdale, Chairman and Chief Executive of Optical Express Group, noted, "We hope the players show the same exceptional form at Duddingston as they've done in the first three Optical Express PGA Tour 2012 events. This is all about our, and the PGA's, desire to see the next generation of Scotland's elite golfers flourish and take their rightful place on the global golfing stage."
Speaking on behalf of Duddingston Golf Club, Secretary Duncan Ireland added “The Optical Express PGA Tour provides a tremendous platform for Scottish golfers to show their talents, and Duddingston Golf Club is proud to be associated with it. We believe we have an excellent course here, and the fact that there has been such a large entry is testament to that.”

NOW FRIDAY SELL-OUT AT IRISH OPEN THIS WEEK

NEWS RELEASE FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR
The unprecedented success of this year’s Irish Open continued today with the news that the second day’s play on Friday June 29 at Royal Portrush Golf Club is now also a complete sell-out.
Last Thursday, The European Tour announced that Saturday June 30 and Sunday July 1 had officially sold out, the Tour, for the first time in its 40 year history, having to close tickets sales for a tournament with the 27,000 limit for each day reached.
But now, with three days to go to the start of the championship proper, tournament organisers have confirmed that Friday is now also in the same situation as expectation surrounding the first staging of the Irish Open in Northern Ireland since 1953 reaches fever pitch.
Spectators without tickets can still pay on the gate to watch the action in Tuesday’s first official practice day, Wednesday’s Pro-Am featuring stars from the worlds of showbusiness and sport and the first round play on Thursday, but after that, to gain entry to the action on the world-famous Dunluce Course, spectators need to be in possession of a valid ticket.
100,000 ROYAL PORTRUSH CROWD
Spectators are also reminded that due to the close proximity of the start of the tournament on Thursday, there is no ability now to buy advance tickets from the Tour’s ticket website.
“When we announced, in January, that the Irish Open was coming to Royal Portrush we were told to expect a hugely positive reaction from golfing public but this has exceeded all our expectations and is fantastic news for the tournament. We are well on course for in excess of 100,000 spectators here over the week,” said Championship Director Antonia Beggs.
“We have planned for this and our traffic management is in place, however we remind spectators that it is vitally important to follow the official Automobile Association event signage to and from the tournament rather than rely on ‘SatNav technology’ as the signs will direct spectators to the best available car park at the time.
“We also ask spectators to remember that this is a major sporting occasion and to exercise patience in their journeys to and from the event.”
As outlined last week and since consultation began on the tournament six months ago, public transport will play a huge part in moving spectators in and out of Portrush.
• In addition to normal scheduled services, extra trains will run from Belfast and Derry–Londonderry to Portrush with tickets available to book online or purchase in advance from main train stations.
• Dedicated golf coach services will depart locations across Northern Ireland and are available to book online only. Ulsterbus Tours is also offering both travel and Irish Open ticket packages.
• Golf rail service online ticket bookings will close at 2pm three days prior to travel. However, additional rail tickets will also be available to purchase from selected stations on day of travel.
• Golf coach ticket bookings will close at 5pm on day prior to travel and are only available to purchase online
• Golf coach and train return services are £15 per adult and £7.50 per child. Ulsterbus Tours packages are £40 per person.
For travel information including bus and rail ticket bookings click www.translink.co.uk/irishopen or call the Translink contact centre on 00 44 (0) 28 9066 6630.

EUROPEAN AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS FOR THE DUKE'S IN 2014

NEWS RELEASE
In what already promises to be an exceptional sporting year with both the Commonwealth Games and Ryder Cup coming to Scotland, The Old Course Hotel, Golf Resort and Spa in St Andrews has announced another major event is to be staged in 2014.
The world’s leading amateur stroke-play championship will be hosted by The Duke's, the resort's award-winning heathland course, overlooking the home of golf.
A number of the game’s biggest names have used the International European Amateur Championships as a springboard to their professional careers including Rory McIlroy, Sergio Garcia and Carl Pettersson – all former winners of the prestigious title, with Scotland’s European Tour star Stephen Gallacher claiming victory in 1994.
The tournament – in its 25th year - has been staged in countries across Europe including France, Germany, Sweden, Italy, Finland, Belgium, Portugal, Wales, Switzerland, Spain, England, The Netherlands and Ireland.
David Scott, Manager at The Duke's Golf Club is "absolutely thrilled" with the announcement saying: "The last time Scotland hosted the Championships was at Nairn in 2003, so we are delighted to see the event come back to Scotland.” David adds: “We know many clubs would love to host the championships, so we are delighted the decision has been taken to entrust The Duke's with such a major event in the amateur golfing calendar."
The event will be the perfect test for the world’s leading amateurs. David explains: "The European Amateur Championship will see 144 of the very best amateur golfers gather to do battle. The stakes could not be higher as the winner has an automatic place in the following year's Open Championship and, in 2015, that will be back in St Andrews on the Old Course, so we are expecting the strongest field and an exceptional contest for such a sought-after prize."
Hamish Grey, Chief Executive of the Scottish Golf Union, is "delighted" with the decision, saying: “We are looking forward to staging one of the world’s premier amateur events at The Duke’s and working with David and his team on what promises to be a fantastic championship. This will be our third major event at The Duke’s, having hosted both the Scottish Amateur Championship and Scottish Stroke Play Championship.”
David concludes: "We will be working hand-in-hand with the Scottish Golf Union over the two year countdown, ensuring we maintain the highest of standards, not only for our members, but also for visitors who will want to come and try out the course in light of this announcement."
Daniel Pereira, General Manager at the five red star resort expresses his delight, saying: "David and the team at The Duke's have done an amazing job in bringing the amateur championship to St Andrews." Daniel adds: "Over recent years, David has overseen significant investment not only in the course – and in particular the greens - but also in the Clubhouse and our facilities which are amongst the very best available for golfers visiting the home of the game. It is no wonder The Duke’s now takes pride of place in the UK’s top 100 courses.”
The European men's amateur championship will be played at The Duke's Course, St Andrews from Monday 4th to Saturday 9th August 2014.

WHINHILL'S STEPHEN WILSON WINS FREEDMAN TROPHY

RENFREWSHIRE GOLF UNION
PRESS RELEASE

The Freedman Trophy is awarded by Renfrewshire Golf Union to the County Boys’ Match Play Champion.  It is contested by the leading sixteen boys from the Stroke Play Championship.
Kilmacolm Golf Club provide the venue and the four who fought their way to the semi finals were Jack McAlpine (Kilmacolm), Stephen Wilson (Greenock Whinhill), Martin McCorkell (Gleddoch) and Stuart Cameron (Renfrew).
The first semi-final between Jack McAlpine and Stephen Wilson was a tense affair with Stephen building an early lead, Jack sticking to the task and squaring the game on the sixteenth hole.    The eighteenth was a catalogue of errors with Jack safely on the fairway while Stephen had to take a penalty drop from an unplayable lie. Jack then hit his ball out of bounds allowing Stephen to win the hole and the match. The other game was an easy victory for Stuart Cameron who built a six hole lead at one point and, despite a late fight back by Martin McCorkell, ran out a comfortable winner by 4 and 3.
In the final, Stephen started strongly and had a three hole lead by the fifth. He lost the next two holes but recovered to be three up again at the turn. Stuart fought back and solid golf saw him square the match on the sixteenth green. With the seventeenth halved, it was all to play for on the final hole. What was to follow will remain in the memory of the players and the spectators for a long time.
First, Stuart hit a magnificent tee shot down the left of the fairway while Stephen hit his ball out of bounds. Stephen’s second ball found the middle of the fairway and his next shot was played to the front of the green. Stuart then hit two balls through the green and out of bounds and conceded the hole and the match.  A disappointing end to what had been a great final.

ASPIRE TAKEOVER: BECOMES PAUL LAWRIE GOLF CENTRE

NEWS RELEASE
Paul Lawrie has today acquired the Aspire Golf Centre (on the South Deeside Road), Aberdeen that will now be re-named the ‘Paul Lawrie Golf Centre’.
Lawrie, who is currently enjoying a rich vein of form on the course - sitting in 6th place on the European Tour’s Race to Dubai rankings and 3rd place on the official points list for the 2012 European Ryder Cup team - has been in discussion with some fellow Aberdonian businessmen for some time, as they have sought the right opportunity to purchase a centre in Aberdeen.
(Robbie Stewart moves from his post at Cruden Bay to become the Director of Golf at the Paul Lawrie Golf Centre).
The golf facility, which currently boasts a 9-hole course, covered driving range bays and short game practice areas, will become the Paul Lawrie Golf Centre with a dedicated approach to the development of junior golf.
The new centre will become the base of the Paul Lawrie Foundation, launched by Lawrie back in 2001 with a mission to get as many young people involved in golf as possible.
In just over 10 years Lawrie has committed much of his own time and money to the Foundation, and along with a number of sponsors and partners has successfully grown the Foundation to now provide coaching and competitive play for 1,000’s of youngsters across the North East of Scotland.
The golf centre will be used for the various junior coaching programmes of the Foundation and will also host a number of the Foundation’s junior flag events across the year. There will also be a dedicated Paul Lawrie Academy to help develop the talents of young Scottish golfers, and Lawrie himself will be heavily involved in coaching short game clinics to children in the Foundation.
In addition to being the base of the Paul Lawrie Foundation, the centre will also have a number of teaching pro’s on hand to encourage participation in golf for all levels through kids and adult summer camps, courses and competitions, with Lawrie putting the emphasis on one common goal – the enjoyment and development of golf for all.
He commented: “I’m delighted to be opening the Paul Lawrie Golf Centre at such a fantastic facility here in Aberdeen. It’s a superb place for the Foundation to be based, and will give us the perfect opportunity to get lots more youngsters involved in golf, as well as develop those that have come through our Elite Squads.
"I’m very thankful to Stewart Spence, my long term friend and sponsor, for his support in this exciting project, and I know that he shares my continued goals of developing golf in Scotland.” He also added:
“We are very excited to have secured the services of Robbie Stewart as our Director of Golf. I have known Robbie for many years and he will bring vast experience and enthusiasm to the role, and I’m very much looking forward to working with him’.

EUROPEAN CALL UP FOR LAWRENCE

With his classy winning performance recently in the Junior Tour event at Rowallan, Alva’s Lawrence Allan clinched a place in the team of six to represent Scotland in the European boys' championship to be held in Sweden at the beginning of July.
In achieving this honour he has brought great credit to his family and Alva Golf Club. In fact, it's probably the biggest honour for Alva Golf Club since Norman Wood played in the Ryder Cup in the 1970s.
Lawrence had an outstanding season in Clackmannanshire last year, winning the boys' stroke play, boys' match play and county championship.  Those who know Lawrence and his golf will be thrilled at this well deserved honour, and will wish him well in Sweden.
The team will play two rounds of stroke play to determine their flight. The top flight of eight play match play to determine the winners of the 2012 European boys' team championship.
Well done, Lawrence!

 TENNANT CUP

The prestigious Tennant Cup was played at the weekend at Glasgow Gailes and Killermont golf courses over 72 holes.
In this Scottish Golf Union Order of Merit event, locals Jamie Aitken (Alloa) and Scott Borrowman (Dollar) featured. Jamie missed the cut with rounds of 82 and 75, but once again demonstrated that he has the golf game to compete at this level.
Scott, a former Scottish youths champion made the cut, finishing at 11 over par with rounds of 75, 75, 74 and 70, and getting close to the elite golfers in Scotland.
Jamie, Scott and Lawrence will all be playing in the 72 hole East of Scotland Championship at Lundin Links this weekend.

WEE COUNTY GOLFERS MOVE UP RANKINGS

In the recent rankings published, Lawrence Allan (Alva) is third in the Scottish Golf Union boys' rankings, and 27th equal in the men’s rankings.
Scott Borrowman is 11th in the men’s rankings. Jamie Aitken is 20th.
In the World Amateur Golf Rankings, calculated differently from the Scottish Golf Union rankings, Lawrence has reached his highest point ever at 925 - that’s 25th best golfer in Scotland.
Scott Borrowman is at 1022 (27th in Scotland). There is still time for improvement.

RAIN STOPS PLAY
The unusual heavy rainfall caused many golf events to be curtailed or cancelled in the last week. The Central Scotland Seniors at Glenbervie was cancelled on both days, the Challenge Tour event at Spey Valley was decided over three rounds, local Callum Macaulay (Tulliallan) just missing the cut.
Callum is in Italy this week, playing in the next Challenge Tour event - the Challenge Provincia di Varese near Milan over a rather shorter course at 6,433yds
