BRYCE EASTON WINS FOUR-MAN PLAY-OFF AT SUN CITY CHALLENGE

FROM THE SUNSHINE TOUR WEBSITE
Bryce Easton produced his second eagle of the day on the 18th at the Lost City Golf Course to win a four-man sudden-death playoff for the R550,000 Sun City Challenge.
“The hole kind of sets up for me,” he said, “so I could fade the ball into the pin, even though it was close to the water.” He deposited his approach in regulation play about 10 feet from the hole, and boxed the putt. He did almost exactly the same thing in the playoff, putting the pressure on Brandon Pieters who was 20 feet from the pin.
The other two in the play-off were Andrew Georgiou and Allan Versfeld: Georgiou had put his third within birdie range, but missed, and Versfeld flew the green and was unable to get up and down for birdie – so they were out.
Pieters’ eagle putted lipped cruelly out, and Georgiou went close with his birdie putt, so it was all down to a repeat performance by Easton, and the putt didn’t look like missing.
“Once I got to 18, I was a bit surprised to see the lead was nine-under,” said Easton, who had battled his way around the final round and was two-over heading down the last.
“Once I saw I had a chance, it became a little easier knowing exactly what I had to do,” he said. And those two approach shots – the one in regulation and the other in the playoff – put huge pressure on his competitors.
In the end, it was enough for the win, but it was a close-run thing.
The four all took different routes into the play-off. Easton eagled the 18th, Versfeld made birdie, Georgiou a par, and Pieters dropped a shot as the quartet all finished on nine-under-par 207 and made their way down the 18th one more time for the sudden-death playoff.
James Kamte had a shot at winning the thing outright before that, too: He had a relatively easy second shot into the 18th, and an eagle would have given him victory, a birdie a spot in te ever-expanding playoff.
But he pushed his approach into the water on the right of the 18th green, and although he made a good up-and-down for par, he had let his chance slip – probably even earlier than that final error when he made three bogeys in five holes at the start of the final nine.
For Easton, it was the culmination of a process which got underway when he won the first Sunshine Big Easy Tour event last year, and then got a second-place finish behind Oliver Bekker in the Northern Cape Classic.
“I have been playing well, but haven’t managed to put together three or four consecutive good rounds,” he said.
When he closed with three consecutive birdies in his second round, he put himself into a position to change that – and two consecutive eagles saw his career take flight.

PAUL LAWRIE JOINT FOURTH GOING INTO FINAL DAY OF PGA CHAMPIONSHIP

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Luke Donald is on course to retain his BMW PGA Championship title - and return to World Number One - after defying testing conditions with a third round of 69 in front of record Saturday crowds.
More than 25,000 spectators flocked through the gates at Wentworth Club to witness the English Ryder Cup star showed his class with a joint-best round of the day in strong winds.
Needing only a top eight finish to take the World Number One spot back off Rory McIlroy, who opened the door by missing a second successive cut, the 34 year old is now 11 under par and two ahead of Justin Rose.
Donald is trying to follow Sir Nick Faldo and Colin Montgomerie as the only players to make a successful defence of The European Tour's flagship event. Faldo did it in 1980 and 1981, while Montgomerie had three wins in a row from 1998 to 2000.
Overnight leader James Morrison endured a difficult day, however. Four clear after a sparkling second round 64, the World Number 236 ran up a couple of 8s before signing for an 81 and will go into the closing 18 holes eight strokes off the lead.
In contrast, Donald plotted his way around like the expert he now is, gathering birdies at the first two par fives and then going two clear at the 13th.
Peter Lawrie was the man out in front by then, but as the Irishman hit into the trees and bogeyed, Donald fired in an iron to six feet and picked up another shot.He did bogey the 15th after driving into a ditch, but salvaged a par on the long 17th after going in the trees and hitting an on-course television reporter with his next shot.
Then, to nobody's surprise, he laid up short of the water on the last, pitched to 18 feet and made the birdie putt.
Rose, who played with Donald the first two days and admired his ability to bounce straight back from trouble, and Ian Poulter were the only others to break 70.
Peter Lawrie is in third spot on seven under after a 72, while joint fourth are former Open Champion Paul Lawrie and South African trio Branden Grace, Richard Sterne and Ernie Els.
Donald said: "The tougher the better for me. The good players that can be patient and deal with it are always going to rise to the top usually.
"That was by far my best round of the three. The wind was swirling and I hit a lot of solid shots.
"There were a couple of loose ones coming down the stretch, but I'm very pleased with that finish - it was hugely important for me.
"Physically and mentally it was tough and it's going to be a grind tomorrow."
Rose, who could move to a career-high fifth in the Official World Golf Ranking by winning, commented: "I'm delighted. It was one of those days where I only realised how good a round it was after I signed my card and saw that the course had taken its toll."

CHRIS DOAK ONLY FOUR SHOTS OFF THE LEAD ON CHALLENGE TOUR

EUROPEAN CHALLENGE TOUR REPORT
from Neil Ahern
nahern@europeantour.com
Chris Doak will enter the final day of the Telenet Trophy harbouring hopes of a first Challenge Tour victory after a two under par third round of 69 left him just four shots off the lead at Ravenstein Royal Golf Club of Belgium.
The former Scottish PGA Number One is in tied seventh place after a steady round on a breezy day when low scores were at a premium.
He got off to the perfect start with a birdie on the first hole before two successive bogeys on the fourth and fifth. They were to be the last dropped shots of his round, however, as he picked up shots on the 13th, 16th and 18th holes to finish the day on six under par for the tournament, four shots behind Italian Marco Crespi.
“I thought I was going to finish with three birdies,” said the Greenock man. “I pretty much had chances on every hole down the back nine but I’m just not reading the greens right. There are subtle breaks on the greens but I'm putting well and my whole game is good. Now it’s just a case of moving up and shooting low tomorrow.
“I did well in India and Madeira and it was kind of the same at the start of last year too, but my putting has improved and you can’t improve enough with your putting. The difference is always when you’re holing a few.
“If the wind stays the same and I get a low one, six or seven under, I’ll definitely be there or thereabouts so I’m looking forward to it now.”
Scott Henry was just a shot further back in tied 11th place after a steady level par third round of 70 while Jack Doherty’s two under par round of 69 moved him to tied 16th place on four under par.
Marco Crespi maintained his lead at the Telenet Trophy after a shaky one under par third round of 70 left him a shot clear of Frenchman Alexandre Kaleka, whose eagle at the par four 18th hole set up an intriguing final day in Belgium.
Crespi admitted he could feel the nerves stepping onto the first tee as the outright leader at Ravenstein Royal Golf Club of Belgium and it showed as he bogeyed the first, second and fourth holes.
The Italian steadied himself, however, and picked up shots at the sixth, ninth and 13th before a chip-in at the 14th hole moved him under par for the day. He looked like he would relinquish his outright lead after a bogey at the 17th hole but a birdie on the final hole meant he remained in the driving seat on ten under par.
“I played pretty badly today,” said the 33 year old, who is chasing a first Challenge Tour title. “My game was completely at odds with my previous two rounds. I missed a lot of fairways with the driver and a lot of greens with my approaches.
“I hit only 24 or 25 putts today so that was the only thing that kept me in it and helped me score a one under par round. I was very nervous this morning but I tried to focus and play it shot by shot. This helped me hit a few good shots here and there so it wasn’t so bad.”
Kaleka was right on Crespi’s tail on nine under after an eventful finish to his round. The 25 year old stepped onto the 16th tee three under par for the day and tied for the lead but took a big gamble by trying to clear trees with his approach from the rough. That didn’t go to plan, however, and he carded a triple bogey seven.
His impulsive streak did bear fruit on the 304 yard par four 18th hole when his drive rolled to within 16 feet of the pin and with the anticipating crowds watching on, he held the putt to move into second place.
“It was really cool to finish like that,” said Kaleka, who won the ALLIANZ EurOpen de Lyon in 2009 on his Challenge Tour debut. “I played really well today so I was disappointed to be level par on the 18th tee.
“I just missed my tee shot on the right side on the 16th and I decided to play over the trees but it was an impossible shot. It probably was down to over-confidence but it wasn’t very smart! I played aggressively because it’s a short course and if you drive well you can get close to the greens so that’s what I tried today and it went well on some holes and bad on others.
“I'm confident going into tomorrow. I think I can score well and I’ll try to shoot a low score and we’ll see what happens.”
Olly Whitely was a shot further back in third place on eight under par after a steady one under par round of 70.
Playing with the leader Crespi, the Englishman birdied the second hole and then parred every hole up until the 17th, which he birdied before a bogey on the 17th left him two shots off the lead.
Spain’s Carlos Aguilar, Jurgen Maurer of Austria and Italian Andrea Perrino shared fourth place on seven under par but on a day when low scores were at a premium, Eddie Pepperell’s six under par round of 65 provided one of the stories of the day after he put his change in fortunes down to a YouTube video tutorial featuring none other than Luke Donald.
The 21 year old from England won on his first appearance of the year at the ALLIANZ Open Côtes d’Armor Bretagne two weeks ago but was struggling around the greens in the opening two days in Belgium.
He still made the cut, however, and he had a video lesson on the short game to thank for his emergence as he launched himself right into contention.
“I watched some short game stuff with Luke Donald this morning on YouTube,” said Pepperell, who won the Portuguese Amateur Championship in an impressive amateur career. “I was struggling with chipping and pitching and the feel around the greens so I watched some of his stuff.
“I love watching him, the way he plays and his short game so a few of his tips really helped me out there around the greens.”

ERNIE ELS ANGRY AT LACK OF WATERING OF WENTWORTH GREENS

FROM THE BBC SPORT.COM WEBSITE
Ernie Els has criticised PGA Championship organisers for the state of the greens on the Wentworth course he helped redesign.
Els, who has come under attack for the changes in recent years, was angry at the lack of watering on the course.
"I asked them to put water on the greens, so put water on the greens," said the 42-year-old South African.
"You don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure it out. The guys are not happy and I'm not happy."
A number of big-name players such as Paul Casey and Ian Poulter have criticised the course since it was made more difficult two years ago, though further tweaks for this week seem to have found favour.
But after failing to hold his approach on the 18th green, Els launched an expletive-filled tirade and complained that officials had not heeded his requests.
"I landed my second at the 18th probably five yards too far," said the former world number one. "How much money did we spend on the 18th? We built a dam there. Why the hell was the green not holding?
"My point is, you hit a driver and then a four-iron gets you in the middle of the green. What else must you do next? Must I be the greenkeeper here?
"The Tour has got to play ball - it's not my job. The 15th green is holding, the 16th is not, the 17th is not, the 18th is not.
"They're all inconsistent. I can't keep talking about this. At some point they've got to listen. I do talk, but they don't listen.
"I can't control the wind and it seems like I can't control the greens staff either. They've seen the forecast almost a week in advance, but it's like talking to this wall behind me - I'm fed up.
"This is not a surprise. I've been talking since I landed on Monday - keep the moisture on the greens. It gets to me. I want everybody to have a fair and tough examination.
"Anybody who has half an idea in this game can walk to the 12th green and see - it's dead. Somebody is not doing their job. Why is this happening?"
Els added that he had spoken to Tour chief referee John Paramor out on the course and was told there had been some watering.
But the South African, who could face punishment from the European Tour for his comments, said: "Well, you've got to triple it. I really am annoyed."
Tournament director David Garland said: "We want a tough and fair set-up. The greens have been hand-watered every night after play.
"This was done last night and because we knew that east winds were forecast, sprinklers were also put on every single green to give them more water.
"Because of the conditions some fairways were also watered and tees were moved forward on the 13th, 15th, 17th and 18th."
Despite being bathed in sunshine over the first three days, the condition of the West Course has been causing concern following weeks of cold and wet weather.
Head greenkeeper Chris Kennedy said it had been "the most difficult build-up I have ever known".

STEPHEN GRAY WINS TOP PRIZE AT DALMUIR

Hayston's Stephen Gray, winner of the Tartan Tour's Order of Merit and money table last season, got his first domestic win of 2012 under his belt in today's West Dunbartonshire pro-am at Dalmuir municipal course.
Gray had won pro-ams in Portugal and Spain in February-March but nothing in Scotland until now.
He shot a two-under-par 66 with a mixed bag of a card - an eagle 2 at the eighth, birdies at the second, long third, fourth, ninth and 10th but, on the debit side, a double bogey 5 at the short 11th and bogeys at the sixth, 12th and 14th before he parred the last four holes to secure a two-shot victory from Greg McBain (Gamola Golf).
McBain started well by birdieing the first three holes but his bogeys at 17 and 18 for a 68 were costly.
Gray won £1,270 and McBain £1,015.
Local pro Stewart Savage, who finished joint third on 69, led the amateur trio of Peter Verrecchia (handicap 12), Fraser McGlashan (18) and John Semple (18) to victory in the pro-am team event with a net score of 15-under-par 53.

England's Chris McDonnell managed to deal with "first time" pressure to win LUMAR Slovenian Golf Open. He defeated France's Thomas Fournier who signed for a 67 score of the day to tie lead afetr 54 holes.

McDonnell was playing in the last group for this first time in his career. "I was a kind of nervous during first 9 holes" he said. Then I played better but I made a mistake on the 14th misjudging the wind. I ended one foot short and it rolled in the water"

Meanwhile, Thomas Fournier, one group ahead, was leading with -7 as the Englishman was then -6. But the player from Hexham golf club made putt for birdy on the last 2 holes and stay in contention to go into a play off.

A play-off for a trophy was a first time as well for McDonnell. "I hit a very good second shot on the par 5 18th. Thomas missed his tee shot and was in the trees so you couldn't hit the green. I had 2 putts to win and I did."

US OPEN 36-hole QUAIFIER AT WALTON HEATH ON MONDAY

FROM THE BBCSPORT.COM WEBSITE
Colin Montgomerie and Jose Maria Olazabal will take part in the 36-hole US Open qualifying tournament at Walton Heath in Surrey on Monday.
More than 100 players will compete for about 12 spots for next month's major at the Olympic Club in San Francisco.
Montgomerie, 48, is now 398th in the world and has not played in the US Open since 2008.
The Scot, US Open runner-up three times, is also entered for Open qualifying at Sunningdale on 25 June.
Last year was the first time since 1989 that the eight-time European number one failed to play in any of the majors.
Olazabal, who succeeded Montgomerie as European Ryder Cup captain, last played in the US Open in 2007 and his last attempt to qualify was three years ago.
The US Open takes place from June 14-17 in California
