BELGIAN COLSAERTS BLASTS HIS WAY INTO RYDER CUP PICTURE

FROM THE DAILY TELEGRAPH WEBSITE
The Belgian outblasted and ultimately outlasted Graeme McDowell here at the Volvo World Matchplay today, hauling himself into an automatic place on José María Olazábal’s team.
Looking on, the captain must have been impressed with Nicolas Colsaerts’ collection of the £555,000 first prize, regardless of his late wobble. He survived the guile of McDowell and the gales of the Finca Cortesin foothills – as well as his nerves – to win on the last and finally secure a cheque that matches his length of shot: huge.
The 29 year-old has always possessed the swing, the physique and the talent to crack the elite. And by entering the world’s top 50 for the first time he is now assured entry into next month’s US Open, the Open and the campaign’s other main events.
At the very least Colsaerts seems destined to be a notable runner in the qualifying race. Not bad for a player who waited a decade for his first top-flight win (in China last year) and had been written off by many as an under-achiever.
“It was really tough out there but I managed to hang on,” said Colsaerts, who also beat McDowell on his way to last year’s semi-final. “It has always been a dream of mind to play in the Ryder Cup and I hope this win helps me realise it.”
Certainly the tall Belgian would be a worthy addition, especially in the four-balls. Colsaerts leads the driving stats in Europe and his average of 316 yards is a yard longer than Bubba Watson, the Masters winner who heads the US PGA Tour’s charts.
While Colsaerts is No 1 in this category, McDowell is way down in 155th, conceding an average of 35 yards to Colsaerts, although at times his deficit was twice that distance. However in devilishly windy conditions, the Ulsterman contributed to his own downfall.
McDowell’s worst moment was a shank on the 13th at the end of a three-bogey run. When Colsaerts eventually tapped in on the 18th — having missed a four-footer for victory on the previous hole – he was four over par, which highlighted the arduous nature of the task as well as his opponent’s struggles.
Despite his disappointment, this could be rated as McDowell’s best result since his annus mirablis in 2010, which brought the US Open and, of course, Ryder Cup legend status with his decisive point at Celtic Manor.
McDowell was six under par in his morning semi-final victory over Rafael Cabrera-Bello and that alone should mean he heads to Wentworth this week with confidence restored.
As will Paul Lawrie, once he calms down following his semi-final loss to Colsaerts on the second extra hole. After eight holes the Scot – who harbours such hopes of making the flight to Chicago in four months’ time — was four up. But Colsaerts battled back to force the play-off and then had to suffer a rather ridiculous shoot-out which meant the pair had to go back to the par-three 17th and play behind the second semi-final.
Lawrie’s 18-footer to win on the par-three almost went in, but then he was forced to wait for 10 minutes on his third shot into the 18th as McDowell closed out his win. Colsaerts duly birdied leaving Lawrie to march off without a word.

Paul Lawrie earned 154,825 Euros for being a beaten semi-finalist.

CASTLE STUART LINKS CHANGES TO MAKE A MORE DEMANDING TEST

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
World Number Two Luke Donald will defend his Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open title over a new-look Castle Stuart Golf Links when the £2.5 million event returns to Inverness from July 12-15.
Using their experience of hosting the event for the first time in 2011, together with conversations with a number of players and European Tour officials, staff at Castle Stuart Golf Links undertook several changes to the course to ensure that the world-class field will face a more interesting and demanding test this year.
A total of four new bunkers have been added to the fifth and 14th holes, while new tees have been constructed on the ninth, 12th and 15th holes, meaning that the course now measures 7,193 yards - approximately 150 yards longer than last year.
Stuart McColm, the General Manager at Castle Stuart Golf Links, believes the changes will challenge the players without removing the enjoyment and feel-good factor which were integral to the original vision of how the course, and indeed the game of golf, should be approached even for professionals.
He said: “We’re confident the changes will make the course more challenging without losing any of its original character or charm. The changes certainly weren’t knee-jerk – it was always our intention to consider making changes after last year’s tournament to see what might improve the experience for players and spectators alike.
“A number of our fairways are considerably wider than what the players usually encounter on tour; but, they require precise positioning off the tee to improve the odds of making birdies to certain hole locations and to reduce the risk of making bogeys or worse. We gathered data on last year’s tournament-tee-shots and scoring on several holes to show that indeed this is true. Our changes have been made to make positioning and choice even more important and demanding on several holes. If we get a stiff prevailing wind and greens less receptive than was the case during last year’s wet conditions, the players will be very grateful for the wider fairways.
“We want the players to enjoy coming here and the spectators to enjoy the drama of the best golfers in the world making birdies and eagles. With The Open Championship being played the following week, we see this as a links golf opportunity where the players can both compete on a course where they feel they can score well if they play well, and adequately prepare themselves for the following week’s test. The new changes, should guarantee a challenging yet fair test of the players’ full set of skills, both with regard to ball-striking and decision-making.”
In addition to the course changes, greenkeeping staff at Castle Stuart Golf Links have implemented an investment of more than £70,000 in an extensive and mostly underground storm-drainage system to ensure that the course is well-equipped to withstand the most severe weather conditions.
Chris Haspell, Course Manager at Castle Stuart Golf Links, said: “Our added storm drainage will also help low spots drain faster, and along with tying new bunker drains into the system, it will help keep play moving at all times.
"In any normal weather year, this wouldn’t be necessary, but we were very keen to work with The European Tour and the players to help make Castle Stuart a great venue for tournament golf even under the severest of conditions. Normally, our micro-climate is one of the driest and brightest in Britain.”
To facilitate easier movement, better viewing for the public, and an improved spectator experience, club staff have also added new paths and walkways, levelled the ground in several places and removed and cut back a number of gorse bushes.
Mike Stewart, Tournament Director of the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open, said: “The staff at Castle Stuart have carried out a magnificent job of making improvements in a number of areas, and we should applaud them for taking the initiative in making the tournament better for players, spectators and tournament organisers after thorough scrutiny of last year’s event.
"Everyone who competed at last year’s tournament was hugely impressed with the course layout. The changes – together with new drainage facilities – have improved what was already a world-class venue.
“We look forward to welcoming the players and spectators to Castle Stuart in July for what promises to be another superb edition of the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open.”
Advance ticket savings are still available for the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open, with adult one day tickets currently costing £30  – a reduction of £5 on the gate price. Adult season tickets are currently priced at £70, offering a £10 saving on the gate price.

PAUL LAWRIE CONQUEROR COLSAERTS BEATS McDOWELL IN VOLVO MATCH-PLAY FINAL

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Nicolas Colsaerts led three times on the front nine but turned all square with Graeme McDowell in the Volvo World Match Play Championship final.
Last year’s semi-finalist from Belgium struck first with an eagle at the long third, after McDowell made an 18 footer on the first and holed from nine at the next to remain level after missing both greens.
The pair met in the quarter-finals last year, with Colsaerts winning 2 and 1 - and his 25 foot putt on the long third after McDowell almost drove into the lake saw him lead.
The European tour’s longest hitter gave away his early advantage by driving into the lake on the fourth and double-bogeying.
He should have gone back in front on the next, but missed a three foot birdie putt after McDowell had holed from further away for his par five.
Colsaerts made amends with a five foot birdie putt to win the sixth, bogeyed the next, but then went ahead for the third time after McDowell drove into the bushes and had to take a penalty drop, only to once more bogey the very next hole. McDowell hit his second into the bushes on the long 11th as the wind gusts went over 30mph, but after losing it to a par five it looked as if he would draw level instantly again.
However, he missed from three feet for a half in bogey fours.

PERTH AND KINROSS WIN MONEYGATE SCOTTISH AREA TEAM TITLE

NEWS RELEASE FROM THE SCOTTISH GOLF UNION
By ROSS DUNCAN
Marketing, Media and Sponsorship Manager
Blairgowrie’s Glenn Campbell clinched the winning point as Perth and Kinross lifted the Moneygate Scottish Area Team Championship for the first time in ten year,  beating Fife in a closely contested final.
The host area, boasting no fewer than five Blairgowrie club champions in their six-man side, made home advantage count as they ran out 3.5 – 1.5 winners against the defending champions.Campbell, pictured by Cal Carson Golf Agency, the 2005 Scottish champion who played in Perth and Kinross’s back-to-back wins in 2001-02 (when it was an all-in match-play format) won at the 19th in a pulsating match against last year’s SGU Order of Merit no. 1 James White, to put his side in an unassailable position.
It was a fitting finish for the final, with the duo of Campbell and White having shared top spot in the individual scoring during yesterday’s qualifying stage.
Stuart Graham got his side off to a flyer, firing 9 birdies in 13 holes to ease past Scotland international Scott Crichton and get the first point on the board for the hosts. However the Fife foursomes pairing of Colin Martin and Alister Hain levelled the match, winning at the 20th against Scott Michie and George Brass.
The home club’s Bradley Neil was behind in much of his match against South African Amateur Champion Brian Soutar, but produced three birdies in four holes from the 14th to put his side back into the driving seat. Neil, just 16, birdied the 14th, before hitting a wedge to 7-feet at the short 15th which he sank for a two to move ahead. He and Soutar halved the long 16th, but rifled a 7-iron to 2 feet for a winning two at the 17th.
Campbell enjoyed the better of the front nine against White, but the Fifer battled back to take the match to extra holes, before three-putting the 19th to hand victory to a jubilant Perth and Kinross team.
“The boys have played superbly all weekend, from lading the stroke play qualifying to both our games today,” said Stuart McKendrick, who was captaining the team for the first time.“I’m delighted for the boys. We came into the final with no pressure on us as we knew Fife were a really strong team. Stuart (Graham) played stunning golf and young Bradley was nerveless as usual. Glenn’s been the stalwart of the team and George (Brass) was great on his debut. Everyone contributed to the win and it’s all down to them.” he added.
For Campbell and Neil, both players expressed their delight at winning the title on home turf.
“It’s extra special to win at Blairgowrie. We knew we had a chance at the start of the week with five club champions in our ranks and our knowledge of the course was an advantage, but all the guys have gone out and played fantastic golf.” said Campbell who was Scottish champion at Southerness in 2005.
Neil, who finished runner-up at last weekend’s Golfdatalab Scottish Youhs Championship, added:
“I knew I would have to make birdies in my match to beat Brian and I managed a great run towards the end of the round. My birdie on 15 was big for momentum. Then I was very nervous on the 17th as I knew it was crucial in the overall match, but I managed to pull it off.  It is a very special moment for everyone in our Area and at the club.”
Stirlingshire, with wins for Graeme Rbertson, Fraser Moore and Chris Lawton, took the bronze medal thanks to a 3 – 2 win over Renfrewshire.

McCARROLL BEATS SHAW IN ALL-IRELAND PLAY-OFF IN AUSTRIA

FROM THE ALPS TOUR WEBSITE
Ireland's Brendan Mc Carroll won the 20th Gösser Open presented by Martin Wiegele at the Austrian venue today. He defeated one of his golfing friends, Northern Ireland's Gareth Shaw at the second hole of a sudden death play-off.
A group of three players took third place on the podium - France's Julien Gressier and Dominique Nouailhac and Italy's Joon Kim
It was one of the most amazing day of Alps Tour history. No fewer than seven players were on course at one time with a total of -13. Walkie-talkies kept on announcing ties and photographers ran from one group to another to be sure to have the winner in the box.
First to lead at the clubhouse was France's Domnique Nouailhac. He shot 65. A few minutes later, fellow Julien Gressier signed for same score and same total, -13. At that moment, players in the last group were -12.
Austrian Jürgen Maurer stayed close to his playing partner during 10 holes but his swing seemed to abandon him after that.
Brendan McCarroll holed for birdie on the 13th to get to -13. He hit great shot on 16th to improve to -14 at the same time as Shw birdied the 18th to finish on-14. The 2012 Gösser Open was in Irish hands - Brendan McCarroll (68 for 202) or Gareth Shaw (67-202).
In the play-off, playing the 18th hole for the second time, Shaw missed his tee shot on the left behind a tree and had to play 90° to the fairway and he couldn't save par. Mc Carroll, 26,  grabbed his maiden trophy as a pro.
"I like the shape of the course, I can see the shots I have to play. It was easier than at home on links (Ballyliffin GC). I putted well this week but I didn't look at the leaderboard on the 18th tee. I just wanted to play for a par. I felt very relaxed all day long," said McCarroll
"My shot of the day? Maybe the second on the par 5 16th. I hit the green and I rolled a really good 20metre putt up to within three inches of the hole.
"It was funny to get into a play off against Gareth. We went fishing together yesterday. I am happy not to be second any more and obviously I would like to keep on playing well. My goal in the European tour."
The new top five in the Alps Tour order of merit is:
1 Jack Senior
2 Brendan McCarroll
3 Jesus Legarrea
4 Gareth Shaw
5 Joon Kim.

SCOTSWATCH. Ross Kellett finished T26 with a 71 for 209, a shot ahead of Kris Nicholl (Fraserburgh who signed off with a 69 for T31.
Philip McLean (Peterhead), the third Scot in the field, missed the 36-hole cut with scores of 75-72 for 147 (141 or better qualified for the final round.

PAUL LAWRIE, FOUR UP AFTER FOUR, LOSES AT 20th TO NICOLAS COLSAERTS

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Nicolas Colsaerts recovered from losing the first four holes to beat Paul Lawrie at the second extra hole of their Volvo World Match Play Championship semi-final.
Former Open Champion Lawrie won the first four holes against Belgian Colsaerts, but was hauled back to level by the 14th and after going in front again could not match his opponent's birdie on the last.
That meant sudden death and after Lawrie had narrowly missed from 18 feet on the first, the big-hitting Colsaerts got up and down again from just off the final green to go through.
Colsaerts was set to face Graeme McDowell in the final after the Northern Irish Ryder Cup hero overcame home favourite Rafael Cabrera-Bello.
“It was a very intense game,” said last year’s semi-finalist Colsaerts. “I gave away a lot of holes too easily to Paul early on.
“Four down after four holes, and he made one mistake, he opened the door a little bit and I started to play good at that time. I lost 16 after getting back to all square, and you start to go ‘I'm running out of holes’. 18 obviously plays a little bit in my favour, I can get to the green in two.
“I didn't really feel that much pressure because I was four down all day and I was starting to play good towards the end, and I could see that Paul was not very happy - he wanted the match to finish a little earlier.
“I was probably feeling a lot better than he did, and I thought I was going to capitalise on that.
“I played well here and I probably deserved a place in the final last year, got one now, so I’m very excited.”
LAWRIE won 1-2-3-4-16
COLSAERTS won 8-9-13-14-18-20

Colsaerts won at the 20th.

GRAEME McDOWELL THROUGH TO FINAL

Graeme McDowell was pushed all the way by Spain’s Rafael Cabrera-Bello, but the Northern Irishman eventually secured a thrilling victory on the final green in their Volvo World Match Play Championship semi-final.
McDowell will play Nicolas Colsaerts for the title at Finca Cortesin after the Belgian recovered from four holes down against Paul Lawrie.
McDowell won three of the first four against Cabrera-Bello, but as against Sergio Garcia in his quarter-final was taken to the last before winning.
After a one-hour lightning delay Cabrera-Bello birdied the 16th to be only one behind, but ran up a six at the 18th to lose by two holes.
The final began 20 minutes later, with McDowell saying: "I just need my putting boots on.
"I've simply not putted well enough. I didn't want to see the 18th again, but I did."

McDOWELL won 2-3-4-11-13-18
CABRERA-BELLO won 5-9-12-16

McDOWELL won by two holes.

FIFE v PERTH AND KINROSS IN MONEYGATE SCOTTISH AMATEUR TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

FROM THE SGU WEBSITE
Defending champions Fife will take on hosts Perth and Kinross in the final of the Moneygate Scottish Area Team Championship this afternoon after both sides enjoyed comfortable semi-final wins in the Blairgowrie sunshine this morning
Perth and Kinross, with four of their team benefiting from local knowledge of being a member of the Blairgowrie club, eased to a 3.5 – 1.5 win over Stirlingshire, while Fife maintained their hopes of back-to-back title wins by overcoming Renfrewshire 4.5 – 0.5.
It was Stirlingshire who seized the initiative in the opening semi-final, with Mark Cox partnering Hugh Nelson to a one hole foursomes win over Scott Michie and Scott Brass. However, Perth and Kinross stormed back with a fine 4 and 3 win for Glenn Campbell over University of Stirling student Graeme Robertson, before youngster Bradley Neil put them into the lead by defeating Ryan Campbell 3 and 2.
Stuart Graham booked his side’s place in their first final since 2007 with a 2 and 1 win over Fraser Moore, while the match between Mark Cameron and Chris Lawton was halved.
Fife were always in command against 4-times champions Renfrewshire, taking the opening foursomes match after Colin Martin and Alister Hain overcame Ronnie Clark and Andrew Farmer 2 and 1.
Last year’s SGU Order of Merit champion James White won a hard fought battle over Matt Clark 2 and 1, before Brian Soutar saw off the challenge from Gordon Stevenson 4 and 3.
Scott Crichton, who fired a best of the day 65 yesterday, clinched Fife’s final berth with an impressive 5 and 4 win over former Amateur Champion Craig Watson, while Scott Stewart-Cation shook hands for a half with Sam Binning.

The final tees off at 1330 with the 3rd and 4th place play-off at 1300.

TWO IN A ROW FOR KIM BI-O ON ONE ASIA TOUR

NEWS RELEASE
JEJU ISLAND, South Korea -  Kim Bi-o secured his second OneAsia victory in a row and leaped to the top of the Order of Merit on Sunday with a three-shot victory in the SK Telecom Open at Pinx Golf Club on the SouthKorean holiday island of Jeju.
The 21-year-old home favourite fired rounds of 68-68-67-67 for an 18-under-par total of 270 around the tricky 7,361yd course, beating a hard-charging Park Sang-hyun into sole second place.

He earned 200 million Korean won for the win (around U.S.$ 170,000), bringing his earnings on OneAsia, the Asia-Pacific's most lucrative regional tour, to nearly a quarter of a million dollars in 2012 alone.

It was his third title on the burgeoning OneAsia circuit following a five-shot triumph in last week's GS Caltex Maekyung Open, and a play-off victory at last year's Nanshan China Masters.

Only China's Liang Wenchong has won three OneAsia titles, although Greg Chalmers claimed back-to-back victories at last year's Emirates Australian Open and Australian PGA Championship, presented by Coca-Cola.

Bi-o had seen his two-stroke overnight lead evaporate when Park, playing in the group ahead, started like a bullet train to score three birdies and an eagle on his first four holes. He made the turn in just 30, and then eagled the 10th to move two strokes clear.
"I could hear a few roars up front, but I'm kind of glad I had no idea what was going on," said Bi-o.

"I think if I knew how he was playing, what he was doing, I would probably have tried to be a bit more aggressive -- and that could have been dangerous."

The game turned on a half-hour spell over the closing holes where Bi-o showed the class that suggests it is only a matter of time before he is back playing on the U.S. PGA Tour.

After making birdie on the 14th, Bi-o hit an aggressive second shot on the par-five 16th behind a thick clump of grass, in deep rough, before pulling off a miraculous rescue that landed the ball four feet from the pin, which he converted for another birdie.

Ahead on the par-three 17th, Park put his tee shot in a greenside bunker and splashed out too far, making bogey for a two-shot swing.

A disconsolate Park saw any remaining hopes of victory evaporate with a bogey on the 18th, while Bi-o closed out with a routine par to claim the traditional red jacket.

"Its a great feeling to be playing so well," said Bi-o, who at 20 was the youngest player on the PGA circuit in 2011, but lost his card at the end of the year and is back playing the Nationwide Tour.

"I am delighted to have done so well on OneAsia. The rewards for the hard work have paid off."

Bi-o nevertheless looks like a veteran compared to 16-year-old amateur Kim Si-woo who closed with a two-under par round to share third place with Joo Heung-chol.

New Zealander Mark Brown shot a 69 to finish nine-under for the tournament in sixth place, the best of the non-Koreans, while Indonesian Rory Hie was a shot further back after finishing Sunday level par.

US PGA Tour veteran K J Choi, arguably the best player Asia has produced and a three-time winner of this event, finished four under for the tournament in joint 13th place.

The OneAsia circuit now takes a break for two months, but many of its members are traveling to the United States as the USGA gives the top 25 on the Order of Merit exemption to final qualifying for the U.S. Open in June.

Several members have also qualified to play in The Open Championship in England in July.

The next event on OneAsia is the U.S.$1 million Thailand Open at Suwan Golf and Country Club from August 9-12
