Report by ED HODGE, SGU PR and Media Executive
The much-fancied players in the field for the Paul Lawrie Foundation cottish boys' championship made strong progress today, with notable names booking their place in the last-32 at Murcar Links, only for Anthony Blaney to exit in the final game of the day.
The Liberton ace, 18, looked set to make a strong bid for the championship crown after he shared top spot in the opening Scottish Hydro Junior Tour event of the season.
But the SGU National Boys squad player, who has a +0.9 handicap, met his match in Jordan Shaw (Kingussie), who claimed a fine victory at the 18th.
"It's my third time in the Scottish Boys and this is my best-ever win, beating a Scotland squad player," said Shaw, a two-handicapper.
David Wilson, bidding to become the first player to defend successfully the prestigious Under-18 event since Scott Henry in 2005, eased into the fourth round with two comfortable wins.
After seeing off Gregor Cannon, Wilson racked up his biggest victory in the championship this week after defeating David Cleland from Hamilton 5 and 4.
The Troon Welbeck player, who staged a phenomenal comeback at Dunbar 12 months ago to defeat Liam Johnston in the final, is pleased at his progress. “So far so good,” the 17-year-old said. “I’m pretty confident and I’ve got good feelings after last year.
“I knew it was going to be a tough match but I was four up after nine and in control. I feel my game is a lot more consistent now, all-round really.”
Wilson was joined by a number of other National Boys’ Squad players in tomorrow’s last-32, with Ben Kinsley, the reigning Scottish Under-16 champion and a semi-finalist last year, looking good in his hard-fought 2 and 1 win over Craig Oram (Nairn Dunbar).
It was a repeat success for Kinsley, from St Andrews, after he defeated Oram by the same margin of victory at the quarter-final stage 12 months ago.
“It was a really difficult game and I had to play well. He definitely wanted revenge and came out really strong,” the 16-year-old admitted. “It was a tough game and I knew I had to play well.”
It was a tense affair, with the match nip and tuck through 15 holes. But Oram’s three-putt at the 16th gave Kinsley the edge and he sealed success with a glorious approach to nine feet at the 17th.
Fellow St Andrews player Ewan Scott also progressed, closing out a one-hole success over Andrew Loch (Pumphertson).
Meanwhile, Cawder’s Jamie Savage continued his bid for glory, again drawing on all his battling qualities to defeat Peebles’ Daniel Flannery.
Savage, who looked out when he was four down with eight to play against Andrew Thomson yesterday before a remarkable rescue mission, this time went to the 20th to edge past Flannery.
Blairgowrie’s Bradley Neil joined Savage in round four, again impressing in a 4 and 3 win over fellow Boys’ Squad team-mate Euan Walker (Kilmarnock Barassie).
It looked a tricky tie on paper for Neil, the former Scottish and English Under-14 champion, but he is making strong progress.
“I feel I’m in good form, holing putts and have momentum,” Bradley said.
Others to stay on the winning trail included left-hander Robert MacIntyre from the Glencruitten club in Oban.
Bidding to become the first ‘leftie’ to win the title since Callendar’s Ben Collier in 1990, MacIntyre looks a dark horse for success after a thumping 6 and 4 triumph over Connor Syme (Dumfries and County).
He said: “I’m hitting fairways and greens which is the key. I also feel in good form after helping Scotland win the Quads event near Belfast at the weekend.”
Performance of the day, though, goes to Lochwinnoch’s Paul Reilly, who equalled the biggest win of the week with an 8 and 7 victory over Ross Millar (Whitekirk) to reach the fourth round.

COLIN FARQUHARSON'S NORTH AND NORTH-EAST NOTES
Six North and North-east teenagers are through to the last 32 - Andrew Burgess (Nairn), Jake Scott (Buckpool), Andrew Carrell (Royal Aberdeen), Josh Halliday (Inchmarlo), Kerr Baptie (Duff House Royal and Jordan Shaw (Kingussie).
Earlier in the week I tipped Burgess, Scott and Carrell to make good progress and they have. Now comes the crunch. There are no "easy" matches after you get to the fourth round.
The Burgess family lived in Aberdeen until about seven years ago. Andrew, who plays off +1, credits the move to Nairn and the one-on-one coaching he has received from Nairn Dunbar GC pro David Torrance since then as the reasons behind his improvement to Scotland Under-16 cap level last year.
In October, he won the Sandy Aird Trophy at the North of Scotland Junior Open match-play championship at Forres.
Scott has proved as fine a prospect as the Buckpool bush telegraph has been signalling for the past year but Jake will have a tiger (with a lower-case 't') by the tail in the morning when he tangles with Ben Kinsley (St Andrews), winner of the Scotland Under-16 open stroke-play over 54 holes at Forfar last season.
If Burgess and Scott both win their fourth-round ties, they will meet in the round of the last 16 tomorrow afternoon. Now that would be something!
North-east District officials expected Andrew Carrell to do well on a links course which is an extension of the neighbouring Balgownie conditions he knows so well.

GALLAGHER, HENRY JOINT BEST SCOTS ON DAY 1 OF Q SCHOOL

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Former Scottish amateur champion John Gallagher (Swanston) and John Henry (Clydebank) were the joint best Scots at the end of the first day of the PGA EuroPro Tour Final Qualifying School over 54 holes at Frilford Heath, Oxfordshire.
In a huge field of 240, Gallagher and John, brother of the more successful Scott Henry, were a creditable joint 17th.
Both shot two-under-par 70s with Gallagher getting birdies at the long
fourth, fifth, long eighth, ninth and long 15th - but also three bogeys, at the short sixth, short 16th and 18th.
Henry bogeyed the first and second but covered the next 12 holes in five under par with biredis at the third, sixth, eigth, 12th and 14th before he bogeyed the 16th.
They are six shots behind  leader Tommy King who had a bogey-free round of eight birdies for a 64.
Walker Cup hero at Royal Aberdeen last September, rookie pro Jack Senior from Heysham was lying third with a 66 which included and eagle and six birdies.
GB and I team-mate Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck) had a par-matching 72, despite a shaky run early on in his round. He birdied the second but then ran up a double bogey 5 at the short third followed by a bogey 4 at the next short hole, the sixth.
Stewart, who has failed to gain playing rights on any of the recognised circuits, did finish well with birdies at the long 15th and short 16th followed by solid pars at the last two holes. He is in joint 50th position alongside Mark Kerr (Marriott Dalmahoy), Mark Rae (Alyth) and Myles Cunningham (Longside) who turned pro only last week.
Ellon's Ross Cameron had a double bogey at the first and a double bogey at the 18th in a round of three-over 75. Birdies at the fourth, sixth and 15th repaired some of the damage. He is joint 124th.
Late in the day Scott Young (Turnhouse) came in with a 77 to be joint 178th going into the second round.
Rookie pro Greg Nicolson (Mortonhall) had a nightmare 81 after taking 42 blows for the first nine. He had double bogeys at the first and short 11th and only one birdie on his card, at the sixth. He is tied for 229th place.
The field of 240 will be cut to 120 after Thursday's second round. The qualifiers will go forward to play the final 18 holes on Friday.

MADE OF THE WRIGHT STUFF - GARETH GOES CLEAR WITH A 63

Gareth Wright, brilliant round of 63 over Dundonald Links

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Welshman Gareth Wright spreadeagled the field on the opening day of the Optical Express PGA Tour 54-hole tournament with a brilliant round of nine-under-par 63 at the Dundonald Links, Ayrshire today.
It won't remove the official course lowest mark of 65 from the record books because preferred lies were in operation but that doesn't detract from the 30-year-old West Linton's man brilliant effort.
Scotland's No 1 from last season, Stephen Gray (Hayston) had earlier posted the clubhouse leading score of five-under 67 but Wright motored past him with a bogey-free round which included an eagle 3 at the third, where he chipped in from 15yd, and birdies at the first, short fourth and long fifth on his way to a five-under-par outward half of 31.
"I holed a 20ft putt on the first green and that kind of start always make you feel confident about what's to come," said Gareth who finished fifth on the Tartan Tour's Order of Merit last season.
After the turn he birdied the 10th, 12th, long 14th and long 18th for four-under 32 home.
"I finished last season very well but I never usually start the season well because I have, until now, had to concentrate on studying for PGA exams. But that's behind me now and maybe today's round is a sign that, for a change, I will get off to a good start," said Wright.
So Gareth is four shots clear of the Stephen Gray and five ahead of joint third-placed Banchory's Greig Hutcheon, Scott Herald (Mearns Castle) and Motherwell's Steven O'Hara on the 68 mark. O'Hara had an eagle 3 at the 14th.
And Wright is a good deal more ahead of the host of Scottish stars from the various tours who have responded to the PGA in Scotland's take-over of the tour originally set up by Alan Tait and Nigel Scott-Smith.
Gray had seven birdies and two bogeys - both at short holes -- as he set the early pace with his  67.
Not all the big guns had a good day on a course measuring around 6,900yd but with little or no wind.
Andrew Oldcorn (Kingsacre), from the European Seniors Tour, could do no better than a seven-over 79 and one time Scottish PGA champion Mark Loftus (Mearns Castle) had an 80.
Oldcorn is in joint 61st place in a field of 75 players.
They are in danger of missing the cut which will reduce the field for Friday's final 18 holes to only the leading 30 players and ties at the end of Thursday's second round.
The prize fund is round about £10,000.

PAUL LAWRIE FOUNDATION SCOTTISH BOYS CHAMPIONSHIP

FROM THE SCOTTISH GOLF UNION WEBSITE
By ED HODGE, SGU PR and Media Executive
On the busiest day for the Paul Lawrie Foundation Scottish boys' championship, when the second round and third round ties are all completed, this morning’s games at Murcar Links went largely as expected.
Defending champion David Wilson, victor at Dunbar last year after his astonishing comeback, booked a third-round meeting with David Cleland (Hamilton) this afternoon.
Troon Welbeck’s Wilson, who was taken to the 19th by Alisdair McDougall in the opening round on Monday, eased to a 4 and 3 success over Gregor Cannon (Wigtown and Bladnoch).
There were are also convincing wins for the likes of Alexander Wilson of The Renaissance who took care of Lothian rival Daniel Eardley of Liberton 7 and 5, while Lenzie’s Craig Chalmers was an emphatic winner 7 and 6 against Peter Maxwell from Glenbervie.
Elsewhere, Euan Walker (Kilmarnock (Barassie)) and Bradley Neil of Blairgowrie set up an attractive third-round clash after easy wins for the SGU National Boys’ Squad pair.
Neil achieved a second 6 and 4 triumph, this time over Sam Fitzsimmons from Windyhill, while Walker won 5 and 4 against Greg Forrester of Lundin.
Walker and Neil will meet in the tie of the competition so far just after 3pm.
Another Boys’ Squad member, Ewan Scott (St Andrews), also continued his strong recent form with a straightforward 5 and 4 victory over Fergus Sandison (Blairgowrie) to progress to round three.
OTHER NOTES BY COLIN FARQUHARSON
The curse of beating a Paul Lawrie offspring struck again with Aaron McManus (Tantallon), conqueror of 13-year-old Michael Lawrie (Deeside) yesterday, making his exit today, beaten 3 and 2 by Scotland Under-16 cap Innes Ferguson.
On Tuesday, Scott Finlay (Liberton) who had KO'd Craig Lawrie (Deeside) on the opening day, went down by 3 and 1 to Craig Howie (Peebles).
Ben Craggs, son of SLGA national coach Kevin Craggs, advanced to the third round with a last-green win over Jay Hainie (Bothwell Castle). Craggs, a junior member at Glenbervie GC, won by one hole.
