CABRERA, PETTERSSON SHARE RAIN-HIT HOUSTON OPEN LEAD

FROM THE US PGA TOUR WEBSITE
HUMBLE, Texas -- Angel Cabrera and Carl Pettersson took advantage of early tee times to beat the rain and share the early lead in the Shell Houston Open.
Cabrera and Pettersson shot 7-under 65 in calm conditions Thursday morning to set the pace before the first round was suspended by a thunderstorm.
Only 51 players completed play before the horn sounded at 1:27 p.m. local time. Tournament director Steve Timms said the storm dumped about 1 1/4 inches of rain, leaving shallow ponds on many of the fairways.
"You just can't play under the rules of golf with that much casual water," Timms said.
Grounds crews fanned out across the course late in the afternoon, and Timms was optimistic that Redstone would be playable when the first round was scheduled to resume at 7:30 a.m. CDT on Friday.
"Let it drain overnight, and I think it will be just fine," Timms said.
Ricky Barnes and Jeff Maggert completed their rounds in the morning and were one shot off the lead. Jim Herman also was 6 under, but had three holes left.
Defending champion Phil Mickelson, Fred Couples and Ernie Els, who needs a victory to qualify for the Masters next week, were playing their front nines when play was suspended.
The Shell Houston Open became the run-up event to the Masters in 2007. Timms is hoping to finish the tournament by 5 p.m. Sunday to accommodate not only television, but also the players heading to Augusta.
"We do everything we can operationally to hit that window," Timms said.
The morning groups enjoyed sunshine and calm conditions.
Pettersson birdied four of the first six holes, then reached the par-5 eighth in two and two-putted to reach 5 under. He added birdies on Nos. 11 and 15, then found the greenside bunker with his approach on No. 17 en route to a bogey.
Pettersson missed the cut the last two weeks at Innisbrook and Bay Hill and blamed poor iron play. He changed his setup on the range Tuesday and hit 16 of 18 greens in regulation Thursday.
"I felt confident with that, but that doesn't always relate to good play," he said. "But I felt like I was striking the ball well again, and I told myself just to play aggressive and shoot at the pins and see what happens."
The big-hitting Cabrera birdied three of the four par 5s, and rolled in a 22-foot, downhill birdie putt on the 18th hole.
"The course is perfect," Cabrera said before the storm. "It's really spectacular and it's right for making a good score."
The two-time major champion has missed the cut in four or five US PGA Tour starts this year. But Charlie Epps, his Houston-based swing coach and the director of golf at Redstone, says Cabrera has rounded into form in recent weeks.
"He got off to a slow start and he's been working hard and it's coming on," Epps said. "He's been close in a couple of tournaments. It takes time."
Cabrera has played at Redstone every year since 2007, the year he won the U.S. Open. He missed the cut here in 2009, then won the Masters the following week.
Epps said Cabrera is concentrating on this week and not thinking about the Masters just yet.
"He wants to play well this week, he's focused on this week," Epps said.
Barnes overcame a bout of food poisoning early in the week. He skipped the pro-am Wednesday, but felt fine Thursday morning.
"I got a lot of rest, lot of fluids in me," Barnes said. "And I feel good, and I'll probably be able to get a little workout in later in the day."
The 48-year-old Maggert, who lives in Houston, is winless in 23 starts in his home-town event. The 66 on Thursday is his lowest competitive round at the Tournament Course at Redstone.
"Kind of struggled a little bit since we moved to Redstone, but hopefully this week, I can turn it around," Maggert said. "It was a fun day. I felt some confidence on the greens today, and I made a few putts early and (it) kind of carried over for the rest of the day."
Chris Kirk, who tied for second behind Mickelson last year, withdrew Thursday morning to attend to a personal matter.
The tournament was delayed by bad weather for the first time since 2009.

Day 1 in Antequera

It was an early start today as we were having breakfast at 8am. The hotel and restaurant are of a high standard and the buffet makes it even better.
We began our practice round at 9.30 and the course was a stern test for all. The weather was cold to begin with but the jumpers and waterproofs were off by the turn.
We had a lovely buffet in the clubhouse and we are off for a swim before the Gala Dinner tonight.

HUTCHEON-FLEMING v LARKIN-KENNEDY IN NE FOURSOMES FINAL

Former tennis star Harry Roulston in handicap final
... just a few days after his 70th birthday!
By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Tartan Tour star Greig Hutcheon (Banchory) and Portlethen five-handicap amateur David Fleming will start marginal favourites - if only because Hutch is used to playing at a higher level - to win the North-east Alliance foursomes scratch match-play title in tomorrow morning's (9.20am) final at Murcar Links
But the alternate-shot format needs both players to be on song and their amateur opponents, Scott Larkin, a winner on the SGU 72-hole circuit who plays off +2 at Royal Aberdeen, and Euan Kennedy, a one-handicapper at Newmachar, will fancy their chance of  extending the momentum gained with two 5 and 4 victories in the quarter-finals and semi-finals.
Hutcheon and Fleming played 29 holes - one more than Larkin and Kennedy, in winning their quarter-final and semi-final ties by 4 and 3, and 5 and 4 respectively.
Stonehaven seven-handicapper Harry Roulston, a Scotland tennis champion long before Andy Murray was born and now a retired newspaper editor, is through to the handicap final (9am) in partnership with Alistair Petrie (Oldmeldrum). who plays off 10.
They will be conceding three shots to Mark Lawrie (Kemnay) (7) and Paul Cornfield (Auchmill) (15).
Not many people know this but Harry celebrated his 70th birthday this past Monday. He does not look a day over 50!

JAMIE McLEARY FOUR UNDER PAR START TO KENYA OPEN

EUROPEAN CHALLENGE TOUR NEWS RELEASE
By SARAH GWYNN
Scotland’s Jamie McLeary fired a four under par 67 in the first round of the Barclays Kenya Open today to sit three shots off the lead held by Dane Morten Orum Madsen.
The 30 year old Edinburgh-based player continued his fine form from three weeks ago, when he finished tied eighth in the Pacific Rubiales Colombia Classic in his first Challenge Tour appearance of the season.
“I played well today,” said McLeary. “I teed off from the tenth and had birdies at the 13th, 15th, 17th, 18th, fourth and ninth, but I bogeyed the first and the eighth.
“The course is fiery. You need a lot less club because of the altitude, so it’s challenging adjusting your distances. It’s mostly irons off the tee and just a question of hitting it down the middle, because anywhere off the fairway can be punishing.
“The greens are tricky and hard to read, but I managed to hole a couple of nice putts today.”
McLeary finished 84th in the Rankings last season but has much loftier ambitions this year.
“My goal for the season is the same as everyone’s – to finish first in the Rankings,” he said. “That’s got to be the aim, but I’d take anywhere in the top 20. Ideally you want to be in the top few. I’ll have to win a couple of times for that to happen, but hopefully this will be my season.”
Fellow Scots Chris Doak and Scott Henry opened with a one over par 72, while Jack Doherty signed for a 71, Andrew McArthur carded a 73 and Gavin Dear had a 76.

PETER LAWRIE IN OVER-DRIVE FOR COURSE RECORD 64 IN SICILY

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Peter Lawrie stormed to an eight under par 64 to lead after the opening round of the Sicilian Open at Verdura Golf Resort and Spa today.
The 38 year old Irishman, whose only European Tour victory to date came four years ago in Spain, came into the event having made only two cuts in six starts this season.
But Lawrie turned the form book on its head with nine birdies and a single bogey to establish a new course record.
Dane Søren Kjeldsen had held the course record after a 65 in the morning session, and the three-time European Tour winner was joined in a tie for second by Welshman Jamie Donaldson.

JAMES BYRNE JOINT SECOND AT PANASONIC OPEN INDIA

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE ASIAN TOUR
New Delhi: Indian star Anirban Lahiri overcame swirling winds for an opening round three-under-par 69 to ignite his title defence at the Panasonic Open India today.
Lahiri fired five birdies against two bogeys in a round which he described as possibly the toughest conditions he has ever played at the Delhi Golf Club.
Prom Meesawat of Thailand was among eight players tied in second place on 70 with Asian Tour rookie James Byrne from Banchory, Australians Adam Groom and Scott Barr and Indians Shankar Das, Ashok Kumar, Sanjay Kumar and Digvijay Singh at the US$300,000 event.
Lahiri was delighted to overcome the unfamiliar playing conditions at the Delhi Golf Club as gusting winds made it a tough scoring day. Only 15 players broke par in the 156-man field.
“Yes, this is my first time playing in these swirling winds at the Delhi Golf Club. I was talking to Shiv’s (Kapur) long time caddy who was on the bag for Peter (Karmis) and he said he hasn’t experienced this condition in 34 years!” said Lahiri, a two-time Asian Tour winner.
“Today was a brand new experience for me and I’m happy with the way I played especially with the wind blowing at 30 or 40 kilometres per hour. It was all about execution and not much about strategy,” added the 24-year-old, who will make his British Open debut in July.
Prom, third on the Asian Tour Order of Merit, was disappointed to miss his two feet par putt on the last hole which would have given him the share of the lead.
“The wind made it very tricky. You need to try and keep the ball in play. The conditions of the course are very good. I know the course very well but I’m not going to take that for granted. Anyone can shoot a low score here. You need to stay patient out here,” said Prom, who lost in a play-off to Lahiri at the SAIL-SBI Open at the same venue last month.
Barr made a brave comeback after opening with two straight bogeys and credited his strong mental resilience for his solid round.
“My temperament was pretty good after a bad start (two bogeys). My highlight was probably keeping my mental game in check. Hopefully I can tidy it up and be around the leaderboard,” said Barr, who finished third at the Delhi Golf Club last month.
Asian Tour rookie Byrne, a former Walker Cup team winner at Royal Aberdeen GC last September, was the first to tee off in the morning and avoided the blustery conditions for most of the round.
“The wind is making a big difference here. Obviously the scores are showing. It was a good result. I was on a good side of the draw and managed to play my first nine without any wind. That was a big help and I’m glad I managed to stay out of the wind for most of the holes,” said Byrne, who mixed his card with five birdies against three bogeys.
Groom got off to a fast start with two straight birdies and hopes to keep the momentum going in his search for a first Asian Tour win.
“This week is probably the trickiest I’ve seen the Delhi Golf Club because it is blowing. You need to be careful with your tee shots. I missed a couple of putts out there or I would have been three or four-under. I’m pretty happy with how I played,” said Groom.

DEESIDE, CRAIGIELAW JUNIORS IN SPAIN FOR INTER-CLUB EVENT

Deeside GC boys before their departure for Spain. Left to right: Lewys Anderson, Sean Hassard, Jamie Pryde, Calum Sutherland, Craig Lawrie. Kneeling: Benamin Henderson.

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
The boys of Deeside Golf Club, winners of the Aberdeen and District Junior League Pennant last summer, and  the juniors (one girl in their team) of Craigielaw GC, are in Spain to compete in the Junior Team Home Nations Inter-club championship at Antequera Golf Club, Andalucia on Spain's Costa del Sol.
Today is the practice day. The tournament runs from tomorrow until Monday (April 2).
Ireland (Carton House and Mallow), England (West Essex and Bramshaw from Hampshire) and Wales (Celtic Manor and Mold) also have two club teams representing each of them in this match-play tournament.
Teams can have six or seven players. Deeside have six, Craigielaw seven.

Deeside GC team:
Lewys Anderson (Cults Academy) Handicap 4.
Sean Hassard (Westhill Academy) Handicap 8
Benjamin Henderson (Cults Academy). Handicap 6.
Craig Lawrie (Robert Gordon's College) Handicap scratch
Jamie Pryde (Cults Academy) Handicap 3
Calum Sutherland (Cults Academy) Handicap 6

Craigielaw GC team:
Marcus Cullen. Handicap 7.7
Ewan Donaldson. Handicap 1.2.
Jack Dow. Handicap 3.6.
Oliver Duffy. Handicap 5.
Willem Kerr. Handicap 1.7.
Gabrielle MacDonald. Handicap 1.6.
Lewis Ross. Handicap 9.1.

Deeside GC Director of Golf Frank Coutts, generous benefactor Paul Lawrie and club captain Neil Harper with the boys.
Deeside are making their debut in the annual event. Craigielaw teams have appeared four times, winning the title once and being runners-up once. Gabrielle MacDonald will be making her third appearance. She played in he Scottish universities championships at Lossiemouth earlier this week.
Craigielaw officials estimate the trip costs the club around £5,000 all-in - but they think it is well worth it for a number of reasons.
For Deeside it is a multi-sponsored trip with Deeside Golf Club paying the return flights to Malaga
The Paul Lawrie Foundation gave all the Deeside team members shirts and two dozen balls each. Paul Lawrie, who lives not all that far away from Deeside Golf Club, is an honorary member and his elder son Craig, who plays off scratch, has the lowest handicap in the team.
Deeside GC director of golf Frank Coutts gave the boys two shirts each.
Other sponsorships included support from Munro's Travel Agency and Deeside members Jim Sutherland and Brian Smith, covering travel bags, meeting the airlines charges for transporting golf clubs, etc.
To "repay" the club, the Deeside boys have been doing jobs around the Bieldside course, such as finding and digging up plugged balls on the club's driving range - an amazing 850 balls in the first hour search ... then another 750 on the second search. The third is expected to take the total of lost embedded balls from the driving range well over 2,000 mark.
The boys have also been helping in seeding divots on the course.
"It's the trip of a lifetime for the boys. I wish I was going with them!" said club captain Neil Harper. "The future of Deeside Golf Club lies in its junior section."
Junior convener Andrew Henderson said: "The club, Frank Coutts, Paul Lawrie and others have been very supportive of the boys."
In Spain, the eight teams are divided into two sections. The winners of each section will meet in the final. Because the countries are separated, it would be possible for Deeside to meet Craigielaw in the final as winners of the two sections. Fingers crossed!
The format is stroke-play match-play.
+If plans work out, we shall be carrying daily reports from the tournament
