PUMA SIGN UP IAN POULTER IN FOOTWEAR AND BELTS DEAL

FROM THE GOLFWEEK WEBSITE
By Gene Yasuda
Ian Poulter, a long-time Cobra staff player, is expanding his endorsement duties to the company’s sister brand, Puma Golf.
Beginning this season, Poulter will wear Puma footwear and belts, and continue to use Cobra equipment.
By tapping Poulter, pictured, Puma adds another marquee name to help increase its profile and credibility as a legitimate golf brand. Puma, which acquired Cobra in 2010, has steadily increased its footprint in the golf category, and its marketing stable includes Rickie Fowler, Lexi Thompson, Anna Nordqvist, Johan Edfors.
“Ian’s worldwide presence on multiple tours will help drive home Cobra Puma Golf’s core message to enjoy golf through innovative, performance products with a stylish edge…” said Bob Philion, president of Cobra Puma Golf, in a statement.
Initially, Poulter will wear Puma’s new Neo Classic Pro-Type shoe. This model won’t be immediately available to consumers, but a limited release is scheduled for mid-summer.
Among the shoe’s features: a full-grain upper leather with brogue details in the formstripe; the company’s proprietary S2C Pro (Swing Speed Chassis Pro) outsole; S2 Quill Technology – a combination of directionally molded spikes and replaceable spikes for traction.
As part of his responsibilities, Poulter also will serve as a consultant to help develop new footwear styles for market. A Cobra staff player for more than five years, Poulter this season is using the ZL Encore driver, AMP 3 wood, Baffler Rail 2/H, and S3 Pro CB irons (4-6) and MB irons (7-PW).

US PGA TOUR GIVE COMMISSIONER FINCHEM CONTRACT EXTENSION

FROM THE SKY SPORTS.COM WEBSITE
United States PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem has been handed a new four-year contract to remain in his position until June 2016.
Finchem, 64, has been in his role since 1994 but had said he would welcome an extension to the contract which was due to expire in 2012.
Finchem is the third commissioner of the US PGA Tour after following on from Joe Dey and Deane Beman, and he recently agreed huge new nine-year deals with American broadcasters CBS and NBC.
The new contract for Finchem was agreed by a policy board containing five independent directors and four player directors.
"Tim has positioned the tour for continued growth in areas such as player prize money, charity, sponsor value and growing the game around the world and we are fortunate that he has agreed to continue as commissioner for another four years," said Victor Ganzi, the chairman of the PGA Tour policy board.
Finchem played a leading role in continuing the financial success of the US PGA Tour despite darkening financial situations in America and around the world.
"We have accomplished a lot, but there remains a great opportunity to continue to grow over the next four years," Finchem said.
"It is an honour to work in such a wonderful sport with the world's best athletes and a terrific management team. I look forward to continuing to work closely with them in the future."
Finchem also played a key part in the development of events such as The Presidents Cup, the World Golf Championships and the money-spinning FedEx Cup play-offs.

E-mail from Ross Cameron

Just a short note to say I am over in Turkey to compete in the four EPD winter series events, starting on January 19 at the Gloria course in Antalya.
I am really looking forward to getting started and i wouldn't be here without the great support of my oil industry sponsors 'Saltire Energy' who i will be solely representing this year.
However Day One hasn't gone so well as my clubs haven't arrived yet (but will be with me soon) and it has rained all day!
Day two WILL be better!!
Kind regards

Ross Cameron

EDITOR'S NOTE: Jordan Findlay and David Law will be joining Ross Cameron on the EPD Tour events and Scottishgolfview.com will be keeping you up todate on their exploits. Hopefully, they will be able to E-mail me during their tournaments to give us the news that website scoreboards don't convey.

PAUL LAWRIE FOUNDATION SPONSORS SCOTTISH BOYS' CH/SHIP

David Law and Paul Lawrie pictured at Gleneagles today. Image by Andy Forman.
NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE SCOTTISH GOLF UNION
Paul Lawrie, Scotland’s leading player on The European Tour last year, has further strengthened his support for junior golf with his Foundation today announced as the new sponsor of the Scottish Boys Championship.
First played for in 1935, the event is one of the most famous titles in Scottish Golf and will become the Paul Lawrie Foundation Scottish Boys Championship when the country’s 256 young golfers line up at Murcar Links in Aberdeen from April 9 to 14.
The deal – announced at Ryder Cup 2014 host venue Gleneagles - marks the first time a professional golfer in Scotland has sponsored a SGU national championship event and underlines Lawrie’s massive commitment to junior golf, following the establishment of the Paul Lawrie Foundation 11 years ago. Among its supported graduates is David Law, who won the Scottish Boys Championship in 2009 before going on to claim two Scottish Amateur Championship titles.
The 1999 Open Champion, who finished 18th in the Race to Dubai rankings last season, said: “We are delighted to be lending our support to the Scottish Boys Championship and strengthening what is already a fantastic event. It is championship with a rich history and one which attracts the best young golfers from all over Scotland.
“The Paul Lawrie Foundation is committed to supporting junior golf and increasing the opportunities for our young golfers to develop. We are proud to be working towards these goals alongside the Scottish Golf Union and confident our sponsorship can enhance what has already been achieved.”
The Scottish Boys Championship provides the traditional kick-start to the domestic amateur golf season and attracted players from more than 140 different clubs in 2011, when Troon Welbeck’s David Wilson emerged as the champion, defeating Liam Johnston at the second extra hole after a remarkable comeback.
The event has been staged at some of Scotland’s most historic venues, including North Berwick, Royal Aberdeen, West Kilbride and Dunbar, and returns to Lawrie’s native north-east in April when Murcar Links hosts the championship for the third time.
Previous winners include Andrew Coltart (1987) and Steven O’Hara (1998), while recent champions Michael Stewart and James White, in addition to Law, have progressed to achieve great success in the Men’s game.
In welcoming Lawrie’s support, SGU chairman Douglas Connon said: “This sponsorship is a great boost for the Scottish Boys Championship and highlights Paul’s fantastic commitment to helping develop young golfers across Scotland.
“He is a superb ambassador for Scottish Golf and a great role model for young sportsmen and women to follow, given how he conducts himself on and off the course. He has been a trailblazer already through what he has achieved with the Paul Lawrie Foundation and we are delighted to have him on board as one of our growing list of sponsors.”
Entries for the 2012 Paul Lawrie Foundation Scottish Boys Championship will open at the end of January with a handicap limit of 6.4, costing £36.
This year’s Scottish Hydro Boys Order of Merit will also include the Paul Lawrie Foundation Junior Jug Final, taking place at Elgin (September 1-2).

***The Scottish Boys Championship is open to any male amateur golfer who was either born in Scotland, has one parent or grandparent born in Scotland or can prove principal, permanent residency in Scotland for a period of not less than three years, and has not played for any other country’s International Team at Boys level or higher, be under the age of 18 at 00.01 on January 1, 2012. The 2012 staging of the Championship is at Murcar Links from 9-14 April 9 to 14.. The starting field will be 256 and, in the event of an over-entry, the number shall be reduced in order of exact handicap. The handicap limit is 6.4.

BRATTON'S INVERALLOCHY ACE IS TRUMPED BY WINNER MUNRO

THE MAN, THE CLUB AND THE BALL ... Ian Bratton who had a hole in one at the 10th at Inverallochy today when the North-east Alliance season resumed. Image by Cal Carson Golf Agency.

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Newburgh club professional Ian Bratton has been waiting weeks to have a wrist operation scheduled. He expected to have had it by now but no sign yet and he has to take pain-killers to get through a round of golf.
But every cloud has a silver lining and the popular Ian scored his first ever competitive hole in one - his fifth ace in all - to win the standing special £50 prize for a hole in one at the North-east Alliance competition over the Inverallochy Golf Club winter course ("summer" greens but a much shortened lay-out - maybe by too much?: seven par-3s and 11 par-4s)
With a gesture appreciated by his fellow competitors, Ian bought a bottle of whisky to mark the occasion, opened it and stood it on the bar counter with an invitation for all to have a drink on him. By the end of play, there was just about one nip left in the bottle.
Bratton’s ace with a nine-iron at the 110yd 10th hole helped him match the par of 65 but, on a day of very low scoring, that placed him only joint fifth overall in a field of 80.

Robert Gordon University student Gordon Munro, pictured right, a member at the nearby Fraserburgh course, scored his second win of the season with a three-under 62, following up his success at Craibstone in November.
The big-hitting Munro covered the last seven holes in five under par with an eagle 2 at the 12th, a birdie 3 at the 14th and a grandstand finish of birdie 2s at both the 17th and 18th
Even with a bogey at the 11th, he came home in only 28 shots (six under par) to win by one stroke from two other Fraserburgh players, rookie pro Jordan Findlay (34-29) and Kris Nicol (32-31)
Nice to see Paul Lawrie's nephew Sean - he goes back to Midland College, Texas tomorrow after his Festive holidays - squeezing in an Alliance round before he heads back to the States. Portlethen GC scratch player Sean had a 70. Is he enjoying college life and golf in America? "You bet!" he told me.
Northern's Gary Homer wants an asterisk next to his score of 79 ... to denote he had 13 putts over the last four greens.  I would have thought he would like to keep that kind of statistic quiet but there it is.
Speak about a game of two halves: Grant Leslie Newburgh's 75 was made up of 42 shots to the turn and 33 for the second nine.
Metal drivers are not indestructible - just ask Philip McLean who cracked the head of his driver during his round today. You or I would have to save up for a new one but Philip tells me his equipment supplier (whose name escapes me for the moment) will have a new one through to him within a couple of days).
Net returns under 60 are few and far between - thank goodness - but we had TWO today. Colin Duffus (Kemnay) had a net 59 off 7 and Mike Smith (Inverurie) a net 58 off 16. With mats in use, no handicap cuts ... although the late Ron Menzies was not averse to lowering handicaps in winter conditios if he thought such action was "deserved."
Still thinking of you every Wednesday, Ron.

GARY WOODLAND SWITCHES TO BUTCH HARMON AS SWING COACH

FROM THE CBS Sports.com website
KAPALUA, Hawaii -- Gary Woodland left Hawaii for a two-week break but instead of heading to his home in Florida, he made a detour to Las Vegas to work with new swing coach Butch Harmon.
Golfweek magazine reported Woodland will start working with Harmon immediately. This follows an awkward offseason in which Woodland left agent Blake Smith of Hambric Sports Management to sign with Mark Steinberg at Excel Sports Management. Smith is the son of Woodland's coach, Randy Smith, who thought it best that he and the big hitter part ways.
Woodland told the magazine: "Butch has taken people where I want to go."
Woodland won his first US PGA Tour event last year at Innisbrook, and he teamed with Matt Kuchar in the World Cup to lead the Americans to victory for the first time in 10 years.
Harmon has taken two golfers, Greg Norman and Tiger Woods, to No. 1 in the world. His current list of clients include four-time major champion Phil Mickelson, Nick Watney and Dustin Johnson.

TOWNSEND, CULLEN AND HALL QUALIFY FOR OPEN 2012

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE R AND A
Melbourne, Australia: Australians Aaron Townsend, Nick Cullen and Ashley Hall qualified for the 2012 Open Championship at Australasia International Final Qualifying (IFQ) today.
In unseasonal conditions at Melbourne’s Kingston Heath, which saw wind gusts of more than 55mph and lightning storms, players were forced off the course for over two hours before Townsend eventually won the 36-hole event with a 4-under-par 140.
“It was such a grind out there today. It was so hard to hit the right club any kind of distance so it was just a guessing game,” said Townsend.
“Thankfully my short game was brilliant, I was able to hit the ball up and down a lot and just keep things going along in the right direction.
“It’s fantastic. It’s going to finally sink in over tonight and tomorrow but I couldn’t be happier.”
Also finding the conditions challenging were Cullen and Hall who, along with Peter Senior, finished tied for second with 1-under-par totals.
Senior, who finished his round earlier in the day, had an anxious wait in the clubhouse as Hall went on to birdie the 18th to join him on 143. Cullen bogeyed his final hole to give up his outright second place and join Senior and Hall in a playoff.
Just one playoff hole, the 7th, was needed to decide the final two qualifiers as Senior’s par was not good enough to match birdie fours by Cullen and Hall as the pair booked their places at Royal Lytham & St Annes for the 141st Open Championship this July.
Hall was delighted to have finally qualified after several failed attempts over previous years.
“It’s amazing,” said Hall. “I have been thinking about this ever since they brought the IFQ out to Australia so I have had a few goes at this, at least five or six, so I am pretty pumped right now.
“This is exactly like The Open is going to be, my short game is going to be important so I just have to stay pretty patient and I was patient today.”
For all three this will be their first trip to a Major Championship. Cullen, the youngest of the trio at 27, is not intimidated by the prospect.
“I really haven’t had time to think about it too much. Of course you always dream of playing Majors when you are a kid and playing next to the best guys in the world and I am just looking forward to a chance to do that,” said Cullen.
“I think I’ll go well, I like the wind and as long as I work hard I think I will do alright.”
The next International Final Qualifying event of 2012 takes place in South Africa on Wednesday 18 and Thursday 19 January at Royal Johannesburg. Kensington.
