FRED COUPLES SHOOTS A 62 TO GO SEVEN SHOTS CLEAR

FROM THE US CHAMPIONS (Seniors) TOUR WEBSITE
SAN ANTONIO (AP) -- Fred Couples birdied six of the first seven holes and finished with a course-record 10-under 62 on Saturday to take a seven-stroke lead in the Champions Tour's AT&T Championship.
Couples had 12 birdies -- six in a back-nine 30 -- and a double bogey to reach 17 under at TPC San Antonio's Canyons Course, the first-year venue after nine years at Oak Hills.
"It was just a lot of birdies, which you need to do, though I don't think you need to get 12 of them," said Couples, who only remembers shooting a 61 in a competitive round at the Scandinavian Masters in Sweden. "You don't get leads like this very often."
On the par-3 fourth, Couples pushed his tee shot and dumped a chip into a bunker en route to the double bogey. He won the Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship on Aug. 21 at Westchester for his first senior major title.
Mark Calcavecchia was second after a bogey-free 66. He made a 20-foot birdie putt on the 18th.
The seven-stroke lead is the largest 36-hole margin on the 50-and-over tour since 1998 when Isao Aoki, Hale Irwin and Larry Nelson led events by eight shots.
"Odds are we've identified this year's champion," Calcavecchia said. "I don't see Fred having a bad day."
Couples broke the tournament record of 130 set by Mark McNulty in his 2004 victory, and the 62 tied the event record set by Gil Morgan in 2004 and matched by John Harris in 2005.
"I thought after the double bogey that I wasn't going to let that get to me," Couples said. "I don't remember having any really good rounds with a double, but most of the time today I put my iron shots where I had nice, flat putts."
Nick Price (69) was third at 9 under. Scott Simpson had a chance to join Calcavecchia in second, but bogeyed the 18th and finished at 8 under after a 67. John Cook (67), Tom Lehman (67) and Peter Senior (67) also were 8 under. First-round co-leader Steve Lowery (72) was 7 under.
Calcavecchia, second in the Charles Schwab Cup, is trying to cut Lehman's lead. The top 30 after the tournament will advance to the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship on Nov. 3-6 at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco.

GREG OWEN SHARING FIFTH ON NATIONWIDE TOUR

FROM  THE US NATIONWIDE TOUR WEBSITE
MIAMI, Florida -- Jason Kokrak held steady during a windy third round at the Miccosukee Championship and maintained his three-stroke lead heading into Sunday's finale. Kokrak fired a 3-under 68 and his 15-under 198 total is three better than Florida's Matt Every (67).

Chris Nallen (66) and Roger Tambellini (67) share third place, four back of the leader.
South Carolina's Mark Anderson (66) and England's Greg Owen (66) share fifth place, five behind Kokrak, who is in search of his second win in the past five weeks.
"It allowed for players hitting the ball well to play well," Kokrak said of the 10-20 mph winds. "It kept somebody from shooting 7, 8 or 9-under par today. I had a fair lead to start the round and I knew it would play to my advantage."
Kokrak started with a three-shot bulge and saved par on his first two holes, the second from about 18 feet. From there he added three birdies and was up by six at the turn.
"I knew I was up by a comfortable margin," he said. "I wouldn't say I played conservatively on the back, I just made sure that if I was going to miss, it would be on the right side of the hole."
With most of his closest challengers unable to mount a charge, Kokrak miscues didn't cost him. He hit only half the fairways and only 12 greens in regulation but managed his game and never saw his lead drop below three strokes.
He was up by four after a thin 8-iron tee shot wound up two feet from the cup at the par-3, 17th hole. The lead was cut to three when his 18-inch par putt on the final hole did a 360-degree spin out of the cup.
"It was just like any other day," he said. "I put myself in solid position and hopefully I can do that again tomorrow."
Every rolled in an eight-foot birdie putt on the closing hole to grab a spot in Sunday's final pairing.
"You've got to realize the value of par out here today," he said. "Even on the easy holes, when you make a par, it's not the worst thing in the world. "
Third-Round Notes
• The largest 54-hole lead on the Nationwide Tour this year is 8 strokes by Steve Wheatcroft at the Melwood Prince George's County Open. J.J. Killeen led by four at the Cox Classic. Both Wheatcroft and Killeen won those events. No other player has held a lead greater than two strokes in the other events.
• Kokrak's three-shot lead ties the largest 54-hole lead in tournament history. Craig Bowden was up by three in 2003, the tournament's initial year. Bowden needed only an even-par 71 in the final round to win by one.
• Kokrak could guarantee himself a place among THE-25 leading money winners for the 2011 season with a win this weekend. Kokrak is No. 15 on the money list and the first-place check for $108,000 would push him over the $300,000 mark for the year and get him to No. 4 with only two events left to play.
• Luke List, playing in the final pairing with leader Jason Kokrak, stumbled badly on the opening nine with an 8-over 43 that knocked him out of contention. List had six bogeys and a double-bogey to start his day. He two-putted eight times and three-putted on the other hole on the front. He finished with an 8-over 79 and dropped into a tie for 56th place.
English, who turned pro three weeks ago, continues his impressive summer play. English fired a 4-under 67 Saturday and is now 9-under for the week and T7. After graduating from the University of Gerogia in May, English won the Nationwide Children's Hospital Invitational in July as an amateur. He continued to play amateur events and closed out his career as a member of the United States' losing Walker Cup team at Royal Aberdeen
English finished T49 in his pro debut at the Soboba Golf Classic. He lost a playoff the following week to Danny Lee at the WNB Golf Classic but missed the cut at last week's Children's Hospital Classic in Chattanooga, where he attended high school. English is No. 81 on the money list and has two weeks to get into the top-60 on the money list and qualify for the Nationwide Tour Championship at Daniel Island.

BAD NEWS FOR LUIKE DONALD, WEBB SIMPSON STAYS IN HUNT

FROM THE GOLF.COM WEBSITE
ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Georgia (AP) — Webb Simpson shot a 1-under 69 on Saturday and is tied for third heading into the final round of the McGladrey Classic.
Simpson and world No. 1 Luke Donald are vying for the PGA Tour money title and both have said they will play next week at Disney. Simpson trails Donald by $68,971, but could move into the top spot with a strong round Sunday.
Simpson also is looking for a tour-leading third win this year, which could make him the favourite for US PGA Tour player of the year.
Michael Thompson had three early birdies and finished with a 67 to move into the lead at Sea Island, one shot better than second-round leader Billy Horschel. Thompson had one of three bogey-free rounds on the day and is 13-under 197.
Trevor Immelman, who has only two top-10 finishes on Tour since winning the 2008 Masters, matched the Seaside Course record with a 62 and is tied with Simpson at 11 under. Louis Oosthuizen (69), the 2010 British Open champion, Jeff Overton (66), Kris Blanks (66) and Nick O'Hern (69) are tied at 9 under.
Horschel (70) led by as many as three shots and had a one-shot margin when he hit his tee shot at the par-4 16th hole into a lateral hazard. He eventually posted a double-bogey.
Thompson made all three of his birdies on the front nine and parred every hole on the back. He had an 8-foot putt for birdie on the closing hole, but the ball caught a piece of the cup and trickled out.
"I thought it was the best putt I hit all day," Thompson said. "Something yanked it left. But I'm very happy. I played bogey-free on Saturday, which is always a good thing no matter where I stand."
Horschel, a second-year pro, has competed against Thompson before. Horschel was a three-time All-American at the University of Florida, and Thompson went to Alabama.
Horschel was 14 under through 15 holes on the sunny, windless day. But he got "too quick" on his tee shot at No. 16, and watched in dismay as the ball started left and stayed left, dropping into the hazard. He had an 11-foot putt for bogey, and missed it after playing his previous 20 holes at 7-under par, with no bogeys.
"I guess the ball wanted to go in there," Horschel said of his shot at No. 16. "It was a quick swing ... I get a little quick at the top. I'm fortunate to be as close to Michael as I am. I could be two or three shots behind."
Horschel got up and down for par at No. 18 after his second shot went into a sandy area right of the green. He splashed the ball out and made a 10-foot putt.
"I was rooting for him," Thompson said. "I never root for someone to hit a bad shot."
Thompson and Horschel continue to thrive on familiar ground. Thompson won the 2008 Southeastern Conference individual championship at nearby Frederica Golf Club, and Horschel won the 2009 SEC title at Sea Island.
"You can't win the tournament on Saturday," Horschel said. "I'm one back and in the final twosome. It would be nice to be one ahead but I'll take it."
