EDINBURGH AND EAST OF SCOTLAND ALLIANCE REPORT, SCORES

By ALAN GREENSHIELDS
Secretary/Treasurer
Edinburgh & East of Scotland Golfers' Alliance
After another rain threat last night and early morning course inspection the Edinburgh and East Alliance got under way at Royal Musselburgh by 8am today with all 101 players completing their round well before sundown ( well perhaps sundown is an exaggeration but it felt like it after the early morning weather test!).
Congratulations go to Daniel Airens of Falkirk Tryst who joined the Edinburgh and East Alliance last year and was the winner of The Jordan Trophy today.
Danny had an excellent net 67 (77 less 10) to win by two shots from Stuart Brown of Glencourse 69 (74 less 5).
Third place was shared on 70 by Hugh Fraser of Niddry Castle (72 less 2), Mike Robson of Harrison (72 less 2) and Grant Skinner of Glencourse (73 less 3).
The Scratch prizes were very closely fought with Sean McGarvey of Glencorse first in with the best scratch score of 69 (36,33) but followed a little later by Derek Fish of Glenbervie also with 69 (37,32) despite bogeys at 1st, 2nd and 18th.
Third place was shared three ways on a level par score of 70 by Scott Catlin (Greenburn), Jonnie Cliff (Murrayfield) and Scott Grieve (Turnhouse).
Senior Prize with Net 71 was shared by David Jeffrey of Whitekirk (78 less 7) and David McKean of Cardrona (77 less 6).
Trainee Professional Prize went to Daniel Wood of The Hirsel with 71 (36,35).

RICHARDSON LEADS ALL THE WAY TO WIN DUBAI OPEN

Shaikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum presented the winner’s trophy to Peter Richardson in the presence of Shaikh Fahim bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Arab Golf Federation, and Mohamed Juma Buamaim, Chairman of the MENA Golf Tour.

FROM THE MENA TOUR WEBSITE
By Viren Varma
Peter Richardson led from start to finish to win the Shaikh Maktoum Dubai Open, the third and the penultimate event on the MENA Golf Tour, at Al Badia Golf Club on Wednesday.
Starting the day with a two-shot lead, the 27-year-old from Carlisle, a former US college tour player, closed with a bogey-free 66 to go 16-under for the $50,000 tournament, beating his nearest challengers Lindsay Renolds and Dale Marmion by a good four shots.
Canada’s Renolds made a stunning charge, signing off with a blazing eight-under-par 64, but the best score of the Tour so far wasn’t good enough to prevent a rampaging Richards from registering his first victory in a 54-hole tournament since the former England boy international turned professional four years back.
Even Marmion produced something special coming down the stretch to move up the leaderboard. The Englishman made the turn at three over, but suddenly exploded on the back nine, reeling off seven birdies, including six in a row, in his closing 68. Pakistan’s Shahid Murtaza Javed Ahmed and Faical Serghini finished tied fourth on nine-under-par 207 with the former carding a tidy 66, studded with eight birdies.
The UAE also had something to cheer about when Ahmed Al Musharrekh emerged as the leading amateur from a strong field. With rounds of 72, 71 and 74, the ace national player finished on one over par 217, a good three shots ahead of Morocco’s Mustapha El-Maouas.
The week certainly belonged to a consistent Richardson, who showed great strength of character in getting the job done in such superb fashion. Opening with a 66, he never looked back and comfortably kept up his dominance, shooting just five bogeys in his three rounds.
“I am feeling over the moon,” beamed the champion after receiving the trophy and the winner’s cheque for $9,000 from Shaikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
“It has been a great week, something I will remember for a long time to come. I didn’t get off to an aggressive start, but picked up shots in the middle of the round, which was good,” added Richardson who fired three birdies in each half. “I think I was pretty consistent throughout the week and that was the key to winning this event,” he added.
“Everything about this MENA Tour is just great. I am enjoying playing on it and I believe so is the case with every player,” he said.
Canada’s Renolds attributed his 64, a record for the MENA Golf Tour, to his crisp iron play. “I hit my approaches pretty close to the pins and that made the difference. I didn’t play that bad in my previous two rounds, but today I played much better,” said the Canadian about his bogey-free round.
England’s Marmion surprised himself with an amazing birdie run on the back nine. “My front nine which I played three over was pretty disappointing, but something clicked as the round wore on. It feels nice to finish with a string of birdies, though it was not enough to catch up with Peter (Richardson) in the end.”
The season-ending MENA Tour Championship tees off next Monday with the top 40 professionals and 15 amateurs from their respective orders of merit lining up for honours. There will be no cut in this event, which boasts a prize of $75,000.

McKINNON NEW LEADER of GLENEAGLES SCOTTISH PGA CH/SHIP

 AND THE FOURTH-ROUND TEE TIMES

By RON MARSHALL, PGA Scottish Region Press Officer
Jim McKinnon reckons he’s tried to win the Gleneagles PGA Scottish Championship 14 times – but admits that after a super 66 in today's third round this will be the first time he’s been in real contention to take the major prize.
Over a soggy King’s Course, where the start of play was delayed for two-and-a-half hours because of heavy overnight rain, the 38-year-old Ayrshireman did most of his plundering of par on the front nine, with four birdies.
He then added another at the 10th in a bogey-free round, and even shrugged off the minor irritation of three-putting the par-five 18th, which would have put two strokes between himself and Chris Currie from Caldwell.
McKinnon credits Strathaven pro Stuart Kerr for the improvements to his game this year. “I haven’t seen Stuart since the beginning of last month, but he’s been very helpful. My game’s been very solid recently”
Currie’s fairy-tale challenge continued. Having begun his PGA training as a 25-year-old four years ago, he now considers himself free to concentrate on playing now that exams are over. And another sub-par show, this time a two-under 69, keeps him snapping at McKinnon’s heels from only a one-shot gap.
Alone in third place, Ladybank’s Alan Lockhart had no bogeys and three birdies – he made the point that his three-ball had only one bogey among them – and he would dearly love to add the national title to the under-25 title he picked up six years ago at Forres.
The North-east challenge gathered momentum when both Greig Hutcheon (Banchory) and Scott Henderson (King’s Links) burnished their prospects with fine sub-par rounds.
Former champion Hutcheon could scarcely have got off to a worse start – dropping shots at the second and third holes – but a scintillating run of birdies at six, seven, eight, and 10, and the par-five last, plus pars elsewhere had him signing for a three-under 68 and an aggregate of 208, just three shy of McKinnon.
Henderson, by dint of a super 67 – five birdies and a bogey – matched the aggregate of Hutcheon, his playing partner, and with just three players ahead of them can still have a chance of taking the title north.
Overnight leader Mark Kerr (Murrayfield) ran up a disastrous 7 at the par-four fourth, but was two-under for the closing 11 holes for a 74, three off the pace.

MACAULAY GOING FOR BROKE IN ROMA CHALLENGE

By MICHAEL GIBBONS
Deputy Chief Press Officer, European Tour
In need of at least a top three finish to qualify for the Challenge Tour Grand Final in two weeks’ time, Callum Macaulay will bring nothing but aggression to the Olgiata Golf Club at this week’s Roma Golf Challenge.
The Scot from Tulliallan, currently 61st in the Challenge Tour Rankings, needs to earn at least €10,000 this week to burst into the all-important top 45 who will then move forward to the Grand Final in search of one of the 20 available European Tour cards on offer through the final Rankings.
“The only thing that I am going for this week is absolutely everything,” said Macaulay, pictured by Cal Carson Golf Agency.
“The way I see it I have nothing to lose: my Challenge Tour card for next year is secure and I am in the second stage of Tour School so the worst thing that can happen this week is that I miss the cut.
“Nothing will change with regard to next year or Tour School if that happens but if I go for everything and it goes my way then everything will change for the better. I have nothing to lose so there is no pressure on me as far as I am concerned.
“I haven’t had a great year but things have been getting better and better as it has gone on and I have been doing a lot of work recently on the mental approach to the game, working on trying to play more instinctively rather than over-thinking everything.
“This week will be a good test of that – it will be the first time this season where I feel that I can just go out and attack the golf course from the first tee shot and that is what I want to do. That is how I played as an amateur when I would shoot a lot of very low scores. There have been signs of that lately so I am just going to go for it this week and see what happens.”
As the penultimate event of the 2011 Challenge Tour season, almost every player in the field has something to play for, including the six of the seven other Scots in the field.
Craig Lee, currently 11th in the Rankings, is looking to push into the top ten in order to secure the best possible category on Tour next year while Chris Doak, in 34th spot, is hoping to continue the fine form he displayed in finishing fourth in Lyon last week as he bids to join Lee in the elite top 20 at the conclusion of the Grand Final.
While Raymond Russell will continue his return from long-term injury in Rome, the rest of the Challenge Tour’s Scottish contingent – Gavin Dear, Jack Doherty, Jamie McLeary and Elliot Saltman – are all looking for the big result that will guarantee a Challenge Tor card for next season, as well as place at Stage Two of the European Tour Qualifying School.
