SCOTLAND BEAT WALES AS IRISH SENIORS WIN FOUR IN A ROW

Ireland secured their fourth successive Senior Home Internationals title in the sunshine on the final day at Woodhall Spa when they beat England 7-2, while Scotland consigned Wales to the wooden spoon with a 7½-1½ beating.
The victory not only maintained Ireland’s place as the strongest senior side but saw them gain revenge for their defeat by England in last year’s European Seniors Team Championship final at Fairhaven. It was a jubilant Irish captain Barry Doyle who accepted the trophy once again and said: “It was a fantastic performance. As usual we did a lot of sweating out there this afternoon but I feel the foundation was laid in the foursomes this morning.“To take two-and-a-half points was superb but after nine holes this afternoon England came back well. But we responded and ran out convincing winners.”Conversely it was a disappointed England captain Richard Palmer who said: “It wasn’t the result we wanted. It was a disappointing finish to the week but we let ourselves down in the foursomes. To take only half a point left us a lot to do against a team as strong as Ireland.
“But they played well and we congratulate them on another fine victory.”
As far as England were concerned, the damage was done in the morning when just half a point was secured from the three foursomes games.
It left them with an uphill task which they came close to surmounting but it the end proved too much of a deficit to overcome.
On a perfect day for golf with sunshine and little breeze, England looked to have a faint chance midway through the afternoon when they were down in only one game. But Ireland swiftly slammed the door and that chance was gone.
Only Roy Smethurst, at the tender age of 69, came up trumps with the only victory while Alan Squires gained a half but was disappointed to lose a 4-up lead with six to play.
Still with the previous day’s defeat by England in their minds, Scotland made sure Wales finished fourth by romping to an emphatic victory over the Red Dragon men.
Taking the foursomes 2-1, the Scots then turned up the heat by taking the top three singles through Robert Stewart and Ian Brotherston in the country while John Fraser went to the final green before completing a 2-hole victory.
That meant the Scots couldn’t lose but Fraser McCluskey added to the Welsh woes as did David Gardner while Nigel Evans prevented a Scottish clean sweep of the singles with a half against Gordon MacDonald.

SCOTT JAMIESON PLAYS PART AS GB AND I LEAD 4-1 IN FRANCE

Great Britain and Ireland dominated the opening day of the Vivendi Seve trophy as Paul McGinley’s side established a 4-1 advantage after the opening fourballs at St-Nom-La-Bretèche.
Continental Europe started the week as the bookies’ favourites to regain the trophy for the first time since 2000 – Great Britain & Ireland have won the last five contests - but Jean Van De Velde’s side will need to produce a strong fightback if they are to lift the trophy on Sunday.
“It's important to pace ourselves,” said McGinley. “We have had a great start - a brilliant start - but there's a long, long way to go, a lot of points to be played for yet.
“It's a very, very strong European Team and we certainly will not be underestimating them. We played really good golf today, but if we are going to win this, we have to keep on playing to that standard because they are going to come back, there's nothing surer than that.”
Ross Fisher and rookie Scott Jamieson led the way for Great Britain and Ireland, beating Swede Peter Hanson and Frenchman Raphaël Jacquelin 6 and 4.
Last week’s KLM Open champion Simon Dyson partnered Welshman Jamie Donaldson to a 2 and 1 victory in the top game against Spanish pair Miguel Angel Jiménez and Pablo Larrazabal.
Robert Rock holed a string of putts as he partnered Ian Poulter to a 5 and 3 win in the last game out, before Francesco Molinari held his nerve on the final green.
The Italian was one up with Anders Hansen coming down the last, butt Lee Westwood holed a 20 foot putt which looked to have salvaged a half for the World Number Two and Mark Foster.
But the Ryder Cup star converted an eight footer before Darren Clarke and David Horsey held on for a one up victory over rookie pairing Nicolas Colsaerts and Matteo Manassero.
Former Volvo World Match Play champion Fisher again demonstrated his liking of the format with two birdies in the first four holes and a winning par at the fifth.
That run, allied with Jamieson’s birdie at the par three third after a tee shot to six feet, put the pair three up.
Jacquelin birdied the second from five feet and won the sixth with a par to remain in contention, but Fisher and Jamieson birdied four out of five holes from the tenth to seal victory.
Donaldson birdied the first two to go two up with Dyson before Jiménez - given the honour of hitting the opening shot in memory of his friend Ballesteros – birdied the fourth.
And his compatriot Larrazabal splashed out to three feet to make it all square with a birdie at the par five seventh.
But Dyson’s first birdie at the eighth gave the initiative back to Great Britain and Ireland, who sealed victory when the impressive Donaldson birdied the 16th and 17th.
“We played really well and gelled really well,” said Donaldson. “When it wasn't Dys birdieing it was me birdieing - we gelled perfectly in the end.
“Like Dys said we were very tough to beat. I think we were nine under better ball for no drops for the holes we played.”
Westwood showed his class with a tee shot to five feet at the third and three wood to six feet at the seventh which set up an eagle.
Hansen, who holed a bunker shot on the fourth only for Westwood to sink a 20 foot putt to halve the hole, birdied the sixth and tenth.
Molinari won the 15th with a birdie and The Ryder Cup star remained composed to match Westwood’s closing birdie to at least give Continental Europe some blue on the board.
Like Donaldson before him, Horsey began with consecutive birdies to give McGinley’s side an early edge in game four.
Colsaerts responded with birdies at the fifth and eighth, but he and Manassero were two down with five to play as Clarke won the sixth and 12th with birdies – the latter from 20 feet.
Big-hitting Colsaerts pulled a shot back at the 14th but Horsey’s birdie at the 17th put the Great Britain and Ireland pair dormie two and although Colsaerts won the 17th there was to be no recovery.
Rock was in sensational form with six birdies in 15 holes, although it was Poulter who confirmed the win in game five when he birdied the par five 15th.
“I seemed to find a bit of rhythm with the putter after a few holes, and we got around nicely,” said Rock.
Poulter added: “It's always nice to play a match play format, the team environment is great. It was great to play with Rocky today - we got off to a nice start, and saw the lines on the greens fairly early.
Rocky holed a couple of lovely putts, and we both dovetailed pretty nicely for the whole day.”
Van De Velde paid tribute to Great Britain & Ireland’s putting, but insists there is plenty to play for in Friday’s fourballs.
And he could well be right – Continental Europe led 4-1 after the opening day in 2005 and lost 16 1/2-11 ½.
“I didn't see too many missed putts by them to be frankly honest,” he said. “They seemed to find the groove.
“At the end of the day, you can only ask the guy to do their best and try to play their best. There is no doubt that from looking at those numbers, they are going to have to raise their level of play or, equally, maybe Great Britain and Ireland can lower it down a little bit. I would really like that actually!”
McGinley has stuck with the same five pairings for Friday – Dyson and Donaldson face Björn and Jacquelin in game one, before Rock and Poulter take on Swedish pair Hanson and Noren.
Jamieson and Fisher will face Colsaerts and Manassero, Foster and Westwood have a chance for revenge over Hansen and Molinari and Clarke and Horsey will face Larrazabal and Jiménez.

HOME-COURSE WINNER KENNY CORRECTS PGA WEBSITE FIGUREFS

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Every golf club professional worth his salt likes to think he could beat all-comers over his home course - and Downfield's Kenny Hutton lived the pipedream today  when he beat a fair section of the top Tartan Tour pros in the RBS Discovery pro-am.
Hutton shot an four-under-par 69 which was not so eventful as the PGA Scotland website figures made it out to be.
Kenny was good enough to E-mail his correct figures to http://www.scottishgolfview.com/.
"It was actually quite an uneventful round," he said. "I birdied the second, seventh, ninth, 16th and 18th and had one bogey, at the 12th."
The PGA Scotland website credits the Downfield pro with seven birdies, a double bogey at the short 11th and a bogey at the 14th. "Not so," says Kenny. However he put it together, it was still a very good round - too good for the opposition on the day.
Hutton's round was almost out of the textbook, but runner-up Paul Wardell  had a distinct touch of variety about his.
The Whitekirk pro had an eagle, six birdies, a double bogey and three bogeys in compiling a three-under 70, one short of sharing the honours with local hero Hutton.
Wardell's consolation prize was £670.

LOUIS LEE v PHILIP PLEAT IN US SENIOR MEN'S AMATEUR FINAL

FROM THE UNITED STATES GOLF ASSOCIATION WEBSITE
By Michael Trostel, USGA
Manakin-Sabot, Virginia – Louis Lee, 55, of Heber Springs, Arkansas, and Philip Pleat, 55, of Nashua, New Hampshire, each won twice on Wednesday to advance to the championship match of the 2011 USGA Senior Amateur, being conducted at 6,829-yard, par-72 Kinloch Golf Club in Manakin-Sabot, Va.
After an emotional morning in which Lee defeated his brother, Stanford, in what is believed to be the first match between two brothers in USGA history, Louis Lee dug deep and eliminated William Thomas Doughtie, 58, of Amarillo, Texas, 5 and 4, in the afternoon.
With his brother serving as his caddie, Louis Lee started quickly against Doughtie, birdieing two of his first three holes to grab an early 2-up lead. He made the turn at 3-up and continued to pour it on, birdieing holes No. 11, 12 and 13 to seal the match.
Prior to this year’s Senior Amateur, Lee had not played a single competitive event in more than 25 years. Yet he is now just one win away from joining his brother as a USGA champion.
“It’s surreal,” said Louis Lee, who said he was “way out of his comfort zone” playing on the big stage of a USGA championship. But being close to Stanford, the 2007 Senior Amateur champion, has made the week much easier.
“There’s no one in the world I’d rather be on the golf course with than him,” said Louis Lee, of his brother. “And I think he’d say the same thing about me. Having him on the bag gives me more confidence. I mean who wouldn’t want to have an All-American, ex-Tour pro, ex-Senior Amateur champion on the bag? I’ll take that. And by the way, he’s free!”
While playing against Stanford in the morning, Louis Lee built a 2-up lead through 15 holes, but was forced to extra holes when his brother stuck his approach shot on No. 18 within 2 feet of the hole for a conceded birdie.
On the first playoff hole, Louis Lee drained a 20-foot birdie putt to win the match, prompting a pat on the back and hearty embrace from his 59-year-old brother. Lee won the first hole all three times he played it on Wednesday.
“In one way it was the most fun round and in the other way it was the most difficult round I’ve ever played,” said Louis Lee, who drove to Virginia all the way from Arkansas with Stanford and their wives. “You want to play good, you want to win, but it’s OK if you don’t win. That’s a strange sensation in golf. You could not have scripted it any better.”
Though he wasn’t able to make another run at the title, Stanford concurred with Louis.
“I think this has been the best day of golf I’ve ever had. I got to play with my little brother this morning and caddie for him in the afternoon. That’s darn pretty special. Regardless how he plays tomorrow, it’s been a great week.”
Louis Lee will face fellow 55-year-old Philip Pleat, of Nashua, N.H., in the championship final. The Granite State native was rock solid in his two matches on Wednesday, turning back two of the most recognizable names on the senior amateur circuit – Paul Simson and Chip Lutz.
Pleat never trailed on Wednesday, but was pushed to the 18th hole in both his quarterfinal and semifinal matches. He needed his best golf to advance and dug deep, making 13 birdies with normal match-play concessions.
“It’s pretty unbelievable,” said Pleat, who rolled in a 15-foot birdie putt on the final hole to beat Lutz and book his spot in the final. “I was up against two great players and I knew I needed to be on my game. I’m ecstatic.”
While Simson and Lutz were looking to rewrite the record books, Pleat let his putter do the talking, dropping several mid-range putts to hold off late charges by both players. Simson, 60, of Raleigh, N.C., was looking to become the first player to defend his Senior Amateur title in over 30 years while Lutz, 56, of Reading, Pa., was hoping to equal Simson’s feat from 2010 when the North Carolina native won the senior amateur championships of Canada, Britain and the United States in the same season.
“I hit some good shots coming in and made some nice putts, but I missed the one that was probably the easiest,” said Lutz of his 6-foot birdie bid on the 18th that slid by the left edge. “[Pleat] played so nicely that I can’t be disappointed, but when you get this close, you hope to close. But I’ve had a wonderful year.”
Pleat’s performance continued a strong showing by New Hampshire natives in USGA championships this season. Keene, N.H., resident Chelso Barrett was the runner-up to Jordan Spieth at the 2011 U.S. Junior Amateur at Gold Mountain Golf Club. Pleat played against Barrett’s father, Hugh, in the final of the 1981 New Hampshire Amateur.
Thursday’s championship match between 55-year-olds Lee and Pleat will be the first time two Senior Amateur “rookies” have faced each other in the final since 1993 when Joe Ungvary defeated Jerry Nelson.
With their semifinal victories, both Lee and Pleat will be exempt into next week’s U.S. Mid-Amateur at Shadow Hawk Golf Club in Houston, Texas. All semifinalists will be exempt into the 2012 and 2013 Senior Amateurs.

SPAGNUOLO SETS PACE IN PENULTIMATE PGA EUROPRO EVENT

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY PGA EUROPRO TOUR
John Spagnuolo looks to have timed his form perfectly as he leads the penultimate PGA EuroPro Tour event of the season by one stroke after the opening round at Hunley Hall in North Yorkshire.
Spagnuolo (The Sports Academy) started the Integral Collection Classic five places outside the top 60 places on the Order of Merit but a four-under par round of 68 sees him lead on day one.
Only the top 60 will make it to the 888poker.com Tour Championship at Mar Menor in Murcia, Spain on October 5-7, and Spagnuolo gave his chances a huge boost, kicking off on the back nine with three birdies through his first six holes.
A dropped shot at the seventh halted his charge but he roared down his back nine with birdies at four, six and seven before a bogey at the ninth and last took the gloss off an otherwise great day’s work.
Steve Uzzell is just on the right side of the top 60 in 54th spot and he trails Spagnuolo by one stroke after an eagle on par-five third helped him fire a round of 69. Uzzell (Hornsea Golf Club) is joined in a tie for second spot by Shaun Mills (Orsett GC) who picked up three birdies on his back nine to post his three-under par round.
A grandstand finish for Duncan McCarthy sees him head a pack of six players at two-under par. McCarthy (Moortown GC) looked to be heading for a two-over round after 15 holes on the opening day, but a brilliant birdie-eagle-birdie finish sees him right in the mix.
American Dodge Kenner had the same run from the second hole – his 11th – to shoot 70, while Kevin Harper (East Devon Golf Club) and Jon White (Saunton Golf Club) both picked up four birdies in their two-under par rounds. A double-bogey five at the 13th robbed Toby Burden of a four-under par round and Michael Hempstock completes the sextet at two-under par.
Order of Merit leader Chris Hanson (Woodsome Hall Golf Club) was level par going into the final three holes but a double-bogey, birdie and bogey to the 18th saw the winner of three tournaments on this year’s tour finish on two-over par.
The second round of the Integral Collection Classic from Hunley Hall in North Yorkshire begins at 7.30am with live scoring available at http://www.europrotour.com/
