JAMES WHITE WINS SGU ORDER OF MERIT

James
By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com White did not play in the weekend's last event of the 2011 Scottish Golf Union Order of Merit circuit, the Edward Trophy at Glasgow Gailes, but he still won the  season-long points title by a considerable margin.
The Lundin Golf Club member was the only player to win two domestic 72-hole tournaments during the season, the Tennant Cup and and North of Scotland open amateur stroke-play.
He finished with a total of 879.93pt from 12 events – more than 100pt ahead of runner-up Graeme Robertson (Glenbervie) who won the South-east District Open and finished with 768.23pt from 13 outings.
Scott Crichton (Aberdour) was third with 448.55pt from 15 events.
The top 12 in the final table were (number of events played in brackets):
1 James White (Lundin) 879.93
2 Graeme Robertson (Glenbervie) (13) 768.23.
3 Scott Crichton (Aberdour) (15) 448.55
4 Paul Shields (Kirkhill) (15) 414.00
5 Greg Paterson (St Andrews New) (6) 384.10
6 David Law (Hazlehead) (7) 382.50
7 Peter Latimer (St Andrews New) (15) 370.00
8 Adam Dunton (McDonald Ellon) (13) 365.00
T9 Fraser McKenna (Balmore) (14) 345.00
T9 Philip McLean (Peterhead) (11) 345.00
11 Daniel Kay (Dunbar) (11) 334.35
12 James Ross (Royal Burgess) (7) 307.50.

Edinburgh player Graham Robertson (Silverknowes) emulated his Glenbervie namesake by recording a first Order of Merit 72-hole success with victory in the Edward Trophy at Glasgow Gailes on Sunday.
The 34-year-old, last season's Lothians Order of Merit winner, put together three steady rounds of 72, 71, 71 and and then burst clear of the field with a closing round of 67 for a 281 aggregate and a two-shot win in Ayrshire from East Renfrewshire's former British amateur champion, Craig Watson (East Renfrewshire).
Peter Latimer (St Andrews New), who led going into the final round after a second-round 66, had to settle for third on 284 after a closing 73, with fellow Fifer Scott Crichton (Aberdour) sharing fourth with Kilmacolm's Matthew Clark on 288.
Robertson, an Edinburgh-based mechanical engineer, trailed Latimer by three shots after 54 holes but "got off to a flyer" in his final round. He started with a birdie then picked up a second shot at the par-5 fifth.
The pivotal moment came at the ninth, where Robertson, who tied for seventh in the Tennant Cup earlier in the year, decided not to take on a tricky pin position and was aiming for the middle of the green with his approach.
"But I pushed it to four feet and made birdie, which was a bit fortunate," he admitted of a shot that earned him a tie for the lead.
Despite feeling "every shot felt under pressure" on the back nine, Robertson held his game together remarkably well as he went on to record a notable victory.
"Never in my wildest dreams did I think I can pull off a win like this," he said. "Even if I had come up just short it would have been great experience for me.
"But it was nice that I managed to bring every part of my game together over four rounds. I holed some clutch putts at times and that was very pleasing.
"The Edward Trophy is an old event and it's fantastic for me to follow Philip McLean as the winner. It's a brilliant end to the season."
Colville Park's Ross Kellett shared sixth place with Lanarkshire team-mate Steven Rennie on 289, whille defending champion Philip McLean was a further four shots back in ninth spot.
Robertson's namesake - the only difference is that the Stirling University student spells his christian name as Graeme - won the previous weekend's counting event, the South-East District Open at Musselburgh.
He didn't play at Glasgow Gailes, having left with the Stirling University squad for Slovenia where this week's 2nd European universities golf team championships are being held.

HUGH HUNTER'S CLACKMANNAN C0UNTY NEWS

BUSY TIME FOR COUNTY GOLFERS

Local golfers will be in action at the end of this week, when several competitions are being held. Top Boys event is the GARY HARVEY TROPHY at Braehead where teams of 8 boys representing Clackmannan, Fife, Angus and Perth& Kinross will be competing against each other for the 2011 trophy. Each team plays three matches ( one on Saturday 10th and two on Sunday 11th). The Clackmannan team for each match will be selected from the following boys representing four out of the six Golf Clubs in Clackmannan County.
Lawrence Allan , Reyner Kennedy (both Alva) Rikky Alexander, Scott Beattie, Grant Murray ( all Braehead) Ryan Miller (Alloa), Steven Watson, Kevin Ross, Grant Carmichael (all Tillicoultry).

The MIDLAND TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP also takes place this coming weekend over 36 holes at the Lansdowne Course at Blairgowrie where teams of eight golfers representing the same four Areas as in the Boys event at Braehead will be in action.
Representing Clackmannanshire will be Jamie Aitken (Alloa—Captain), Ross Benvie, Scott Moffat (Braehead) Scott Borrowman, Darren Hulston (Dollar) John Maxwell (Tulliallan), Steve McIvor, Michael Robertson (Alva).
Jamie is confident the team will put up a good show—“Clackmannan are the holders of the Championship, but will be tested over the 6900 yard layout where hitting fairways and avoiding the trees is essential to a good score”
Tulliallan’s Bob Stewart as mentioned last week will also be playing over the Lansdowne course in the SCOTTISH SENIORS GOLFING SOCIETY FINALS on Thursday. Bob had a good warm up for the event recently in the Seniors Open at Buchanan Castle where he scored 68 which was the best scratch score by four shots and tied the top handicap score.

On Monday, the SCOTTISH SCHOOLS INTERNATIONAL MATCH against England will be played (foursomes and singles) at Kilmarnock Barassie and Lawrence Allan (Alva Academy) will captain the Scottish team.
Later next week from Tuesday 13th till Thursday 15th, Bob Stewart (Tulliallan) will represent Scotland against teams from the other Home Nations in the SENIOR HOME INTERNATIONALS.
Local golfers will of course hope that Bob will find good golfing form over the Woodhall Spa course in Lincolnshire
Clackmannanshire should be proud of its elite golfers, all of them making their mark on the Scottish golfing scene.
Also on this weekend is the WALKER CUP match played between Great Britain and Ireland and United States……. but no County golfers will be playing in that!

MIDLAND ALLIANCE
Local golfers continue to make their mark in the new season--- at Ballumbie Castle two weeks ago, Chris Westland (Alloa) tied for second place in the handicap section and last week, Alloa’s Hugh Hunter was in a five way tie for the first handicap place on a net score of 72 while Braehead professional Jamie Stevenson took the runner up scratch prize with a 73—Bob Stewart just finished in the top ten with a 78.
EDWARD TROPHY

In the last Scottish Golf |Union Order of Merit event, Alva’s :Lawrence Allan made the 36 hole cut and compiled four steady rounds (75,73,76,72) putting him in 15th place with an aggregate of 296 and quite close to many of the top Scottish elite golfers. The winning score was 281.

WORLD AMATEUR GOLF RANKINGS

With points gained by both players at the South East District Championship, Scott Borrowman (Dollar) has seen his ranking improve by 115 places to 1976, and Alva’s Lawrence Allan has dropped slightly to 1785.

Chris Hamilton kept hopes up for Caldwell with a 1 hole victory over Harry Paton but Cameron McLellan played some great golf and his 3 and 2 win over Brian Coulston meant that the cup was returning to Greenock for the first time since 1993.

Jordan Milne set the pace for the North over the shorter but tricky Ashludie course in the morning, opening with an eagle 2 at the first and holding on for a best of the morning 3 under round of 65 to help the North lead North East by 15 strokes at halfway.
The score of the day came from Paul Lawrie's son Craig representing the North East. He scoring a magnificent, five under par 66 on the tough Medal course in the afternoon, the best score by SEVEN strokes!

ENGLAND'S GARY CHRISTIAN WINS US NATIONWIDE TOUR EVENT

FROM THE GOLF.COM WEBSITE
CANONSBURG, Pennsylvania -- It's not official yet, but England's Gary Christian appears to be headed to the US PGA Tour. Finally.
Christian fired a 4-under 67 in Sunday's final round of the Mylan Classic to finish at 17-under 267 and beat Californian John Mallinger (68) by one stroke.
There are still seven events on the 2011 Nationwide Tour schedule but the 40-year old from England picked up a check for $108,000 and moved from No. 27 to No. 4 on the money list. Heady stuff for someone who has yet to tee it up in a TOUR event.
"I'm biting my lip a little bit and I might be struggling. I'm not usually at a loss for words but this might be one of those rare occasions," said an emotional Christian after being told he may have finally punched his ticket to the TOUR. "It's like a dream come true."
Craig Bowden (66) and Scott Brown (67) tied for third place at 15-under 269. J.J. Killeen (63), Billy Hurley (69) and defending champion Kevin Kisner (70) shared fifth place, three shots back.
"I think it was meant to be this week," said Christian, who was never far from the lead. "Walking down the fairway today I was thinking it's just my time."
Christian, Mallinger and Kisner began the final round at the Southpointe Golf Club, about 15 miles south of downtown Pittsburgh, tied for the lead at 13-under. Battling some early jitters, Christian popped in three birdies on his first five holes and took sole possession of the lead.
"My hands felt a bit nervy but I kept knocking it close the first few holes so I didn't have to battle it too bad," he said. "I trusted my hands would get it to the hole."
Christian's lone poor shot of the day came with an errant tee shot on the long, par-4, 6th hole where he made bogey. The Auburn graduate then put the club back in the bag for the day and relied on a steady 3-wood off the tee the rest of the way.
"I was hitting it good all day. I managed my game and never really put myself in any real danger after that," he said.
Playing partners Mallinger and Kisner, along with several others continued to apply pressure but Christian never folded his tent.
He came close on the par-3, 14thwhen a bad 8-iron and a flubbed chip left him staring at a possible bogey.
"Under the situation it was one of those that you'd be happy just to get it up and down," said Christian, who proceeded to knock it in to stay at 17-under and maintain his lead.
"I was thinking a two-shot swing there, maybe three," said Kisner. "That was probably the pivotal point."
All three players then birdied the short, par-4, 15th hole, leaving Christian up by one over Mallinger and two over Kisner.
Mallinger bogeyed No. 17 to fall two off the lead as they approached the 447-yard 18th.
Kisner, then Mallinger hit their tee shots into the heavy rough down the right side. Christian, though he doesn't look at scoreboards, figured he had a two-shot lead when the pair "hit it in the vegetables."
However, it wasn't over yet.
The "Barman from Wallington" -- as Christian was known during his amateur days in England -- also knocked it down the right side and into a hazard that runs alongside the fairway.
"It's amazing what adrenaline will do. I hit a 3-wood about 300 yards there," he said. "It was in the hazard and probably six to eight inches from toppling over into the creek, which would have made for a different story but those are the breaks you need to win sometimes."
Mallinger came up short from the rough and Kisner's gnarly lie produced a second shot that found the hazard in front of the green.
Christian muscled out a wedge to the right side of the green and was about 40 feet from the pin. When Mallinger's flop shot didn't go in, Christian had the breathing room he needed.
His putt from the fringe stopped four feet away and when his fourth shot lipped the hole, he still had only a six-inch tap-in for the win, the second of his Nationwide Tour career.
"It hasn't sunk in yet," said Christian, who also held a job in pension administration while tending bar in South London. "The journey has been tougher. It might mean more to me, having left my country and my friends."
• Gary Christian's win was his second in the state of Pennsylvania. His first came at the 2009 Northeast Pennsylvania Classic near Scranton. In that event, Christian prevailed in a Tour record-tying 9-hole playoff against Mathias Gronberg.
• Rahil Gangjee of India became the third player in Nationwide Tour history to make a hole-in-one on a par-4 holewhen he used a driver to ace the 316-yard, 15th hole. Gangjee joined Chip Beck (2003 Omaha Classic) and Richard Johnson (2009 Michael Hill New Zealand Open) as the only others to accomplish the feat on Tour.
"I was just trying to get it on the green, that was it. When it's a drivable hole, you think you can get it close and maybe make eagle, but a hole-in-one, nobody thinks about that."
The ace was the fourth of Gangjee's career and his second in competition.

BUBBA WATSON LEADS DEUTSCHE BANK CHAMPIONSHIP BY ONE

FROM THE BBC SPORT WEBSITE
American Bubba Watson holds a one-shot lead going into Monday's final round of the Deutsche Bank Championship in Boston.
Watson had been in a three-way share of the lead with Adam Scott and Charles Schwartzel but they fell a stroke and two shots behind respectively.
The American left-hander carded a one-under round of 70 to move to 11 under overall, hitting five birdies and four bogeys.
There is a five-way tie on 10 under while England's Luke Donald is two shots off the lead on nine under.
World No 1 Donald hit a three-under round of 68, with an eagle on the par five second aiding his challenge.
Watson had begun well with four birdies in his opening nine holes but a disastrous run of three bogeys in five holes, as well as a missed opportunity on the relatively easy par five 18th, meant his lead was not as significant as it could have been going into the final day's play.
"I gave away some shots today but made some putts," said Watson.
"I'll just go out tomorrow [Monday] and do what I've been doing. It's about staying focused, not worrying if a putt doesn't fall or somebody else starts really hot.
"If I was a couple back in the logjam I'd want to change something and step on the gas, but I'll just see what the course gives me and try to shoot lower than anyone else."
Scott was inches away from sharing his overnight lead after an outrageous 76-foot eagle putt at the last just slipped by and he had to settle for birdie and 10 under.
The group on that score also includes Scott's fellow Australian Jason Day, who rattled in an 18-foot birdie putt at the last for a 67 which was highlighted by an eagle at the second.
Brendan Steele eagled the last to match that round, and tidy 68s left Chez Reavie and Jerry Kelly level with the trio in second.
Scott added: "You've just got to see how it goes, hopefully get some momentum early on and you can ride it all the way round. Someone's going to have a low score out of this group near the top."
American Phil Mickelson shot 63 in the morning and is only four shots back and cannot be discounted.

NOW KAYMER PULLS OUT OF SEVE TROPHY MATCH

FROM THE GOLF.COM WEBSITE
Germany's Martin Kaymer has joined US Open champion Rory McIlroy in withdrawing from this month's Seve Trophy in France.
World No 5 Kaymer was set to be the leading player in captain Jean van de Velde's Continental team.
The biennial team match-play competition, named in Seve Ballesteros' honour, sees Continental Europe play Great Britain and Ireland over four days.
McIlroy withdrew saying he needed two weeks rest from his schedule.
Kaymer said he was feeling the effects of a head cold and he wanted a rest ahead of the Alfred Dunhill Links in Scotland which starts on 29 September.
"I'm defending the KLM Open in Holland this week and I really need a week off after that to get myself fully fit to be able to prepare properly for the Alfred Dunhill Links," he said after finishing runner-up in the European Masters in Switzerland.
"Also I just need to win again. I won earlier this year but I haven't won since so I will try to win again in Holland this week and then try and do the same in Scotland."
The Vivendi Seve trophy is being played at the St-Nom-la-Breteche course, west of Paris, from 15 September. The 10 players on each team are decided by the official world rankings and the Race to Dubai order of merit.
Kaymer is the leading player for Continental Europe in both categories.
After McIlroy's withdrawal from the Great Britain and Ireland team last week, the tournament was given a boost when world number two Lee Westwood and Open champion Darren Clarke committed to playing.
Graeme McDowell and Luke Donald are likely to miss the team event because of their continued participation in the FedEx Cup play-offs on the PGA Tour in the United States.
Paul Casey and Ian Poulter did not progress beyond the second of the four FedEx Cup tournaments and therefore could be available for the Seve Trophy.
The Great Britain and Ireland team will be captained for a second time by Ireland's Paul McGinley, who masterminded a win by five points over Continental Europe in 2009, also at the St-Nom-la-Breteche course.
