Renfrewshire boys selected for Scottish Golf Academy

RENFREWSHIRE GOLF UNION PRESS RELEASE
TURNBERRY.DB@GMAIL.COM
Three boys from Renfrewshire, all 14 years and under, have been selected to join the Scottish Golf Union Academy programme. To get there, they had to go through a lengthy process which included being monitored by the professionals at Mearns Castle Golf Academy and then being picked out at a Talent Identification day at St Andrews.

The golf stars of the future are Kyle Turner, who plays at Cochrane Castle Golf Club, and Connor Toal, pictured right, and Ross Robertson, pictured left, both of whom are members of Old Course Ranfurly.
Graham McGee and Gary Havlin, boys’ conveners at Renfrewshire Golf Union, are delighted and will continue to provide support as the boys enter the national scheme which is a coaching programme tailored to the needs of the individual.
Their goal is inclusion in the boys’ squad from which national team players are selected.
Both Ross and Conor were picked to represent Renfrewshire in a county match against Dunbartonshire at their home course. Ross had a good win over Helensburgh’s Robert Johnston and Conor played well but lost his game against Cameron Kirkwood from Bearsden.
Congratulations and best wishes to all three boys.

NORTHERN OPEN HAS THE MAKINGS OF A CRACKING CONTEST

GREIG HUTCHEON BIDDING TO
BE FIRST MAN SINCE KEVIN
STABLES (1993-94) TO WIN
TITLE TWO YEARS IN A ROW

FROM THE PGA E-BULLETIN
with additional words by Colin Farquharson
Walker Cup team selection James Byrne from Banchory will tee up alongside his club's tour pro, defending champion Greig Hutcheon, pictured, in the Aberdeen Asset Management Northern Open at Meldrum House Country Hotel and Golf Course, Oldmeldrum in Aberdeenshire tomorrow morning.
Byrne, having played all four rounds of the European Tour event at Gleneagles at the weekend, is one of 15 amateurs joining the 90 qualifying professionals in the £25,000 tournament over 72 holes with the final two rounds on Friday after a cut at the end of 36 holes.
The Northern Open's leading amateur traditionally wins the Bookless Cup and this is arguably the strongest ever amateur field assembled for the North and North-east's premier pro championship.
The last amateur to win the Northern was Hazlehead's Sandy Pirie in 1970, three years after he played in the Walker Cup.
Banchory tour pro Hutcheon will be defending his title and believes that his failure to survive the halfway cut in the Johnnie Walker Championship at the weekend may have been a blessing in disguise in that it gave him a weekend off duty to recharge his batteries.
Prior to Gleneagles, Hutcheon had won three Tartan Tour 18-hole events in a span of four or five days.
The last man to win the Northern Open two years in a row was Elgin Golf Club pro Kevin Stables in 1993 and 1994.
Another Banchory man Scott Larkin, now a member at Royal Aberdeen GC, who finished runner-up to Hutcheon in last year’s rain-shortened event, is unable to take up the offer of a place in the field due to injury.
Rowallan Castle’s Graham Fox, an eight-time winner on the Tartan Tour this season, is the third player in the group which tees off at 9am.
Scottish amateur champion twice in the past three years, David Law, who narrowly missed out on Walker Cup selection, has the honour of getting play underway at 7.40am, playing in a three-ball which also includes former champion Peter Smith now flourishing among the over-50s and holding down a teaching post under Deeside Golf Club pro Frank Coutts.
Ross Kellet, second reserve behind Law for GB and I in the Royal Aberdeen event, is paired with current Scottish PGA champion, and two-time Northern Open winner Chris Doak, and the experienced Aberdonian Scott Henderson at 9.25am.
Stephen Gray (Hayston) and Paul McKechnie (Braid Hills Golf Range), currently second and third behind Hutcheon in the 2011 Scottish Money List, provide another attractive pairing, teeing off with Leven-based amateur James White at 8.50am.
This year the field for the Aberdeen Asset Management Northern Open includes two women, Michele Thompson, a former Scottish women's champion and 2008 Curtis Cup player at St Andrews, and Nicola Melville, who hope to upstage their male counterparts.
Revealing the draw, Michael MacDougall, PGA Scottish regional secretary, said: “Aberdeen Asset Management’s support has enabled us to assemble a very strong field.
“Meldrum House proved to be a very popular venue for the players last year and we are looking forward to returning there. We are anticipating a tremendous championship and it is very difficult to predict a winner.”
+Peter Smith's four-round total of 264 in winning the Northern Open at Murcar Links in 1994 still stands as the tournament record low and is believed to be the lowest total recorded for any 72-hole Tartan Tour event.

RYDER CUP POINTS RACE BEGINS ON THURSDAY IN SWITZERLAND

FROM THE BBC SPORT WEBSITE
Europe  team captain Jose Maria Olazabal says he is looking forward to watching the battle for Ryder Cup spots unfold as the first event in the race for 2012 qualification looms on the horizon.
The European Masters at Crans-sur-Sierre, Switzerland begins on Thursday with six of 2010's victorious team in the field.
"I'm excited the qualification period is starting. It will be interesting to see how the players perform," he said.
Ten players will qualify automatically, with Olazabal choosing two wild cards.
Lee Westwood, Rory McIlroy, Martin Kaymer, Miguel Angel Jimenez and brothers Edoardo and Francesco Molinari begin their campaigns in the Swiss Alps.
=====RYDER CUP RESULTS
2002: Europe 15.5 -12.5 US
2004: US 9.5 - 18.5 Europe
2006: Europe 18.5 - 9.5 US
2008: US 16.5 - 11.5 Europe
2010: Europe 14.5 -13.5 US
====================
Five players will qualify through the European Tour's points list, while the same number will be decided by the world rankings.
Luke Donald, Graeme McDowell, Ian Poulter and Padraig Harrington will be hoping to make fast starts to their own qualification campaigns in the latest round of the FedEx Cup play-offs in Boston on Friday.
"It is going to be very difficult to make the team - to be one of the top five on the European points list or the world points list is going to be tough," added Olazabal.
"The players will have to play really well to make it and I am sure they are preparing themselves to peak at the right times so that we can have the best chance to win."
The 2012 Ryder Cup takes place at the Medinah Country Club - a course originally designed by Aberdonian Tom Bendelow - in Illinois during the week September 25 to 30.

FIELD FOR OMEGA MISSION HILLS WORLD CUP CONFIRMED

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE EUROPEAN TOUR
The 18 exempt nations for the 2011 Omega Mission Hills World Cup have confirmed their pairings for this year’s star-studded event at Mission Hills Resort, Hainan Island, China, from November 24-27.
Five Major Champions – including current Masters Tournament winner Charl Schwartzel and US Open Champion Rory McIlroy – will represent their countries along with title holders Edoardo and Francesco Molinari of Italy.
Schwartzel is joined in a strong South African line-up by 2010 Open Champion Louis Oosthuizen while McIlroy will reprise his partnership with last year’s US Open Champion Graeme McDowell, a potent duo which earned them a share of second place behind the Italians in 2009.
Last year’s US PGA Champion Martin Kaymer of Germany will have Alex Cejka as his partner for the fourth successive time, the combination having finished sixth in 2007, fifth in 2008 and sixth in 2009. Meanwhile the United States will be represented by Matt Kuchar and his partner Gary Woodland. Both men recognise the honour and privilege of representing the Stars and Stripes.
Kuchar said. “It’s exciting to think about the World Cup and representing the United States. Any time you put on a uniform that has the Stars and Stripes on it gives any American player a special feeling and to be part of a two man team that represents the United States of America only once every two years is a fantastic opportunity and I am very much excited about being part of it.
Woodland said: “It means a lot to me to represent the United States. I do a lot with our military charities and getting a chance to play for the USA means more than I can describe. Matt is a very consistent player, always in play. Hopefully it pans out pretty well. I have a little length to add to it, so hopefully I can drive it out there, he can knock it close and we both get our putters going and we can make a lot of birdies.”
England’s Ian Poulter has named his close friend Justin Rose to fly the flag for England, four years after they finished fourth on their only appearance as a double act at the original Mission Hills Resort in Shenzen.
Poulter said: “I am very much looking forward to returning to the World Cup and representing my country once again. I’m a very patriotic guy and the chance to play for England on the world stage is one that I always relish.
“Everyone who knows me knows how much I enjoy the different aspect that team events bring to golf. I love the head-to-head element of The Ryder Cup but I also really enjoy the format of the World Cup.”
Rose is equally enthusiastic and commented: “Obviously I am really excited to play with ‘Poults’, As our friendship goes way back and we had good run in the World Cup once before.
“I think the World Cup would be a great tournament to have on your CV and we are going there to win it, no doubt about that. For me it is the kind of tournament that if you say you have won the World Cup it sounds prestigious – it is prestigious, and I think we have as good a shot as anybody in the competition.”
Robert Karlsson, a player with a powerful World Cup pedigree, returns to China with a new partner in Alex Noren, the recent winner of the Nordea Masters in his native Sweden. Karlsson, the former European Number One, captured the title with Henrik Stenson in 2008 and the same combination shared second place with Ireland two years ago.
Spain’s Alvaro Quiros has nominated the veteran Miguel Angel Jiménez as his ally with Martin Laird and Stephen Gallacher representing 2007 champions Scotland, and Jamie Donaldson and Rhys Davies linking up under the banner of Wales.
“I am very excited about the prospect of playing my first World Cup for Spain” declared Quiros. “To represent your country is a great honour and I did it as an amateur through the boys, youths and senior teams for Spain, now it is my turn to do it for the first time as a professional.
“I know I hit it further than Miguel but one of the main strengths of our team will be the fact that he is so consistent. That is a great thing to have in a partner and he is also so experienced. He has dealt with everything in his career and I will be looking for him to show me the way. For us to win the World Cup for Spain would be a huge deal for our country, a huge thing. There is no doubt that the words, ‘World Cup’ mean a lot in any sport and golf is no different.”
The Molinari siblings are joined in the field by another set of brothers, Camilo and Manuel Villegas from Colombia, while Denmark’s Anders Hansen, third in the recent US PGA Championship, has elected to play with Thomas Björn for Denmark.
In Asia, Japan’s Yuta Ikeda joins forces with Tetsuji Hiratsuka while Thongchai Jaidee competes for Thailand alongside Kiradech Aphibarnrat while China, as the host nation, also qualify automatically and will be represented on Hainan Island by Lian Wen-chong and Zhang Xin-jun.

Confirmed Exempt Nations:
Germany – Martin Kaymer and Alex Cejka
Ireland - Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell
United States – Matt Kuchar and Gary Woodland
South Africa – Charl Schwartzel and Louis Oosthuizen
England – Ian Poulter and Justin Rose
Sweden – Robert Karlsson and Alex Noren
