PLANS TO PUT TAYMOUTH CASTLE ON THE WORLD GOLFING MAP

NEWS RELEASEPlans for a new world-class golf and sporting estate at Taymouth Castle, Perthshire, featuring a restored James Braid designed golf course, have been approved.
The decision by Perth and Kinross Council means extensive work can now begin on renovating and remodelling the course, which opened in 1923, as part of a landmark project led by Meteor Asset Management to transform the spectacular Taymouth Castle estate, just 40 miles north of Gleneagles, into a luxury boutique hotel and collection of private residences.
Golf course architects Weller Designs, in association with Scotland’s number-one home-based professional golfer, Stephen Gallacher, has been appointed to oversee the work, which includes a significant rerouting of the course, two new holes close to the River Tay, nine new greens, 18 new tees, restoration of all bunkers and the lengthening of the course to just over 7,000-yards.
Bruce Weller, principal course architect on the project, said: “While we are restoring a James Braid design, the remodelled course will certainly be long enough for championship golf and will be an unforgettable experience for the amateur golfer.
“The landscape is breathtaking and will play a huge part in the enjoyment of the experience. That’s why we’re excited the rerouting of the course has enabled us to create two new holes close to the River Tay, which will make for a spectacular backdrop.”
The site of Taymouth Castle has been the ancestral home of The Earls of Breadalbane and the Campbell Clan since the 1550s, and was visited by Queen Victoria in 1842 (The Castle doubled for Balmoral in the 1996 Queen Victoria film, "Mrs Brown")
However, after the 7th Earl of Breadalbane, Gavin Campbell, gambled away his entire Scottish estate, including Taymouth Castle, in the casinos of Monte Carlo, the castle was sold and converted into a fashionable hotel and a luxury retreat for the 1920s elite, with five-time Open Champion James Braid designing the original 12-hole layout.
A further six holes were added in 1948, but by this time the hotel had been requisitioned by the Government as a convalescence home for soldiers, eventually becoming a boarding school for the children of American servicemen in the 1970s. The castle then fell into disrepair in the 1990s.
It’s Braid’s classic design features – raised greens, pot bunkers and strategic dogleg holes – that Weller is now putting back into the golf course.
“In Braid’s time, the bunkers would have been deep, but due to poor maintenance over many years, they had become flattened out and uninteresting,” continued Weller.
“To make the bunkers a feature of the course again, and to add definition to individual holes, we have created steep grass-faced bunkers, which are dramatic and integral to the course strategy.
“In terms of the raised green complexes, Stephen Gallacher has played an active role in their remodeling. He was keen to have running approaches to force short-game skills to come into play. He also wanted to include slopes and swales around the greens, to test shot-making. The result will be very exciting.”
Stephen Gallacher said: “This is the first golf course design project I have been involved with and my role has been to advise on the positioning of bunkers, tees and greens to make it a championship course from the professional tees. At just over 7,000 yards, it may not be as long as many modern championship courses, but there are plenty of strategic challenges to make the course demanding, with a tough start and finish.
“To my mind, good golf course design is about creating a course that is enjoyable and fair for all, and I believe that is what we have achieved at Taymouth Castle.”
With the restoration of the main castle and East Wing to provide hotel accommodation, restaurant and spa, Taymouth Castle will benefit the surrounding community by bringing significant investment to the area and create a unique sporting destination.
Tourism professor John Lennon predicted that over 300 jobs will be created and £30 million injected into the local economy annually.
Martin Mortimer, Development Manager for Taymouth Castle Estate, said: “Our vision is to make Taymouth Castle a world-class golf and sporting estate. The conversion of part of the castle into a clubhouse with spike bar and changing rooms is nearly complete, while the restoration and remodelling of the golf course will continue over the winter and spring of 2012, with the course ready to play by July 2012.
“The staging of the Ryder Cup in Scotland in 2014 will be an important time for
Taymouth Castle and we will be looking to optimise those opportunities.”

GLENEAGLES' ADMISSION PRICE CUT TO £5 FOR FRIDAY VISIT

NEWS RELEASE
As the players begin to arrive at Gleneagles for this week’s Johnnie Walker Championship, former Ryder Cup captain and championship chairman Colin Montgomerie is encouraging all golf spectators to head to Perthshire on Friday and take advantage of the first "£5 Friday."
As the venue for the Johnnie Walker Championship and the host venue for the 2014 Ryder Cup, The Gleneagles Hotel is one of the strongest supporters of golf in Scotland. That support is being increased this year with the introduction of ‘£5 Friday’ during the week of the Johnnie Walker Championship.
Gleneagles will donate all the revenue from on-the-day ticket sales to clubgolf – Scotland’s junior golf development programme.
Colin Montgomerie said: ‘ “It’s gives me great pleasure to see an initiative that not only allows fans to watch a full day of golf for just £5 but that aids the growth of the junior game in Scotland the ‘Home of Golf’. It is a fantastic opportunity for Scottish golf spectators and much credit goes to The Johnnie Walker Championship for dreaming up this opportunity.”
Patrick Elsmie, Managing Director of the AA Five Star resort, said: “We regularly welcome golfers of all levels to Gleneagles, including aspiring junior players. It is important to us that, as a high profile golfing venue in the home of golf and the host venue for the 2014 Ryder Cup, we help to create opportunities for the next generation of players and this support for clubgolf allows us to do that.
“The Johnnie Walker Championship is a tremendous tournament and enjoys great support from players and spectators alike. By taking this initiative with the ticket price we hope that many more spectators will come to the event, enjoy a great golfing spectacle and the magnificent setting here in Perthshire while supporting the development of the game in Scotland.”
Tickets are available at the course and at www.europeantourtickets.com Parking is free. For full details on the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles visit

RENFREWSHIRE GOLF UNION PRESS RELEASE

Chris Mooney (Gourock) beat Alan Kelly (Cochrane Castle) by 3 and 2 in the final of the Renfrewshire match-play championship at Gourock Golf Club.

LOCAL MAN WINS MATCH-PLAY

CHAMPIONSHIP AT GOUROCK

 Turnberry.db@gmail.com
Having fought their way through the 80 plus entrants, the four semi finalists for the Renfrewshire Match Play Championship arrived at Gourock Golf Club to do final battle.
The first semi final was between Lee Jenkins (Elderslie), the Stroke Play Champion, and Chris Mooney, the 31 year old from the local club.  Turning all square at the ninth, Chris put on the pressure by winning the tenth and birdieing the eleventh to go two up.  Lee fought back at thirteen to bring it back to one down but a birdie at the fifteenth restored the lead which enabled Chris to win the match 2 and 1 by halving the next two holes.
The second semi final featured another local member, Ross Campbell, who had to cope with an in form Alan Kelly from Cochrane Castle.  There were not many golfers who could have lived with Alan as he reached the turn in 32 strokes and went on to record his fifth birdie of the morning at the tenth before shaking hands at the twelfth.
In perfect conditions, the final started out cautiously with pars at the first two holes before Alan laid down the challenge with a win at the third to go one up.  Chris hit back at the fifth and went one up with a birdie at the sixth but Alan fought back and restored his narrow lead with a birdie 2 at the seventh and another one at the par five eighth which he carried through the turn.
Chris went all square at the tenth and with the spectators settling in for a drawn out affair, he went in to overdrive with birdies at 13, 14 and 16 to win the match 3 and 2 and take the Match Play Championship to the trophy cabinet at Gourock Golf Club.

J B HOLMES TO HAVE BRAIN SURGERY TO CURE VERTIGO ATTACKS

FROM THE SKY SPORTS WEBSITE
American J B Holmes will miss the rest of the season as he prepares to undergo brain surgery next month.
Holmes, a member of the US 2008 Ryder Cup team, has been suffering vertigo-type symptoms since the Players Championship in May.
He has since been diagnosed with Chiari malformations, structural defects in the part of the brain which controls balance, and will undergo surgery on September 1.
"It's just such a relief to know that there's a name for what I've been going through these past few months and that I have a good chance of getting back to golf and to my regular life," Holmes said in a statement.
"This is a relatively low-risk surgery and only takes about an hour and a half. Best of all, there's a very high success rate in fixing the condition."
The big-hitting Holmes recorded four top-10s in his first 10 US PGA Tour starts this season before his form sharply declined after the Players Championship.
In his last three appearances, the 29-year-old has missed two cuts and withdrew after the opening round of the USPGA Championship at Atlanta Athletic Club, citing illness.
