BRITISH BOYS CHAMPIONSHIP DOWN TO LAST 32 at Burnham/Berrow

FROM THE R AND A WEBSITE
Leading qualifier, Kenny Subregis, is through to the third round of the 85th Boys Amateur Championship at Burnham & Berrow but the 15-year-old French international had to battle all the way before defeating England’s Toby Tree on the 19th hole in their tense second round encounter.
Subregis now goes on to play Boston’s Jordan Wrisdale in a last 32 which will comprise 11 Englishmen, six Germans, three Irishmen, two golfers from France, Spain, Italy and Denmark, and one apiece from Scotland, Poland, Belgium and Denmark.
The match between Subregis, winner of the recent European Young Masters tournament in Hungary, and English international Tree, from Worthing, always had the makings of a closely-contested encounter and so it proved on a day when the Somerset coast was battered by strong winds and intermittent showers.
Subregis won the first two holes with pars but the 17-year-old Englishman pulled level after birdies on both the 376-yard par-4 third and the 511-yard par-5 fourth. The Frenchman regained the initiative when he won both the fifth and sixth in somewhat scrappy fashion and he was still two up when he three-putted from six feet on the 192-yard 13th to let his English rival back into the game.
Thereafter, it turned into a classic match play encounter in which Tree briefly held the initiative after winning both the 14th and the 17th before the Frenchman levelled things up with a 35-foot birdie putt from the back of the 18th green. On the first extra hole Subregis hit his approach into 10-feet and then only had to watch as Tree failed to get-up-and-down from 10-yards short of the green.
“It was a tough game,” admitted the Frenchman, who fought through to the third round of the recent Amateur Championship at Hillside before losing to Englishman, Andy Sullivan. “I don’t think either of us played as well as we can. I’m just happy to get through.”
Subregis was later joined in the last 32 by compatriot Romain Langasque, who defeated Chevin’s Cameron Shaw by 2 holes. However, the day really belonged to the strong German contingent, who won all three of their first round matches and then six out of nine of their games in the afternoon.
The first to progress was Hurly Long who defeated Oxley Park’s Robert Burlison by 2&1 to earn a second round match against Samuel Edwards from Bigbury. The impressive Nicholas Inderthal defeated Delon Hau from the Vale Resort by 5&4 to set up a second round tie with Jimmy Mullen from North Devon, while Dominic Foos beat Spain’s Javier Sainz by 4&2 and went on to play Callum Mackay from Burhill.
In the second round, Jeremy Paul and Steffan Harm both kept the run going with victories over Sweden’s Robin Jonsson and England’s Jonathan Grey before 2011 runner-up, Maximilian Rottluff made it eight out of eight on the day by winning 3&2 against Italy’s Federico Zucchetti to set up a third round encounter against another Italian, Domineco Geminiani. Thereafter, Maximilian Mehles also won before the Germans suffered their first loss of the day when Nicolai Von Dellingshausen was defeated 5&3 by England’s Nathan Kimsey. After his morning’s exertions, Hurly Long also bowed out, losing 3&2 to Edwards, as did Dominic Foos, who succumbed 3&2 to Mackay, but Inderthal consolidated his reputation as one of the favourites, defeating Mullen by 3&2.
The home challenge going into the last 32 is headed by six English Internationals, Oliver Carr, Callum Shinkwin, Kimsey, Patrick Kelly, Max Orrin and Matthew Fitzpatrick, who were all part of the victorious English team at last week’s Boys Home Internationals at Royal St David’s Golf club in Wales.
Skinkwin, from Moor Park, who reached the semi-final of the recent English Amateur Championship at Woburn, was the first to win through, beating Scottish International Bradley Neil from Blairgowrie by two holes. Carr, who emerged with five and a half points out of six at Harlech, defeated Elland’s Nicholas Marsh by 5&4; Kimsey beat Von Dellingshausen by 5&3; Kelly secured a 1 hole victory over Austria’s Robin Goger; Orrin was too strong for Sweden’s Victor Tarnstrom; while Fitzpatrick prevailed against Frenchman, Victor Joffray.
The other Englishmen to make it through to the third round were Mackay, Wrisdale, Harrison Greenberry (Exeter), Samuel Edwards (Bigbury) and William Whiteoak (Bingley St Ives).
Three Irishmen, Keagan Cummings (Elm Park), John-Ross Galbraith (Whitehead) and Gary Hurley (West Waterford) qualified for the match play stage and all three made it into the third round. In the second round, Cummings beat Scot, Greig Marchbank, one of three players from Dumfries and County Golf Club who lost on the day, by 3&1. Galbraith defeated Spain’s Jon Rahm by 2&1, while Hurley overcame Victor Jaffrey from France by 3&2.
Grant Forrest, Craigielaw, who is about to start at the University of San Diego in a couple of week’s time, is the sole Scot left in the draw. He defeated Louis Birchall from Ingestre Park by 3&2.
“I played solidly without doing anything spectacular,” said the Scottish international. “I lost the first, won the second and was never behind after that. “It was tough there,” he added. “The conditions were tricky so it wasn’t easy to play good golf.”

CALLUM BEVERIDGE COMPETES AYRSHIRE BOYS' TITLE DOUBLE

Callum Beveridge (Troon Welbeck) became the 2011 Ayrshire Boys Matchplay Champion this evening when he defeated the defending champion and clubmate David Wilson by 2 and 1 in the final at Prestwick Golf Club.
Having won the Ayrshire Boys Championship just one week previously, Callum Beveridge became only the third player to win both the strokeplay and matchplay titles in the same year, after Hugh McKibbin in 1990 and Scott Brown in 2008, whilst also denying David Wilson the unique achievement of three successive titles.
Having endured terrible weather conditions in the semi finals on Wednesday, the players began in better, if not ideal, conditions in the final with light rain enduring off and on throughout the match.
Both players opened with pars at the first and second before David Wilson took the lead at the third with a birdie four, only to see the match squared again at the fourth when he could only manage a bogey five.
A par three at the Himalayas hole was sufficient for Wilson to restore his lead after five holes but again Beveridge levelled the match when Wilson double bogeyed the eighth hole and then took the lead for the first time when a par four was good enough to give hm the ninth hole.
Pars at the tenth and eleventh, where both players got up and down from greenside bunkers for their threes, kept Beveridge one hole ahead but he got into trouble at the twelfth and conceded the hole to Wilson to return the match to all square. A superb par four at the difficult thirteenth hole gave Beveridge the advantage again and with the fourteenth halved in par fours, the players entered the closing loop with Beveridge holding the slimmest of advantages.
At the fifteenth, Beveridge secured a regulation four whilst Wilson needed to hole a tricky five foot downhill putt to prevent falling two behind, which he did succesfully.

At the short par four sixteenth, Beveridge's tee shot pulled up just short of the green whilst Wilson's tee shot went right, finishing in heavy grass within the Cardinal bunker. To his credit, Wilson played his second just over the green and chipped up for a conceded par four, but Beveridge putted up to within a few inches of the hole and his birdie three was conceded, leaving him dormie two in the match.
At the 391 yard par four Alps hole, the penultimate hole of the course, both players found ideal position from the tee, and both played good second shots which found the putting surface within 20 feet of the hole.
Putting first, Wilson's effort for a birdie three just failed to drop and Callum Beveridge was left with the task of two putting for the championship. His birdie putt ran just past the hole but finished sufficiently close to ellicit a concession from David Wilson and Callum Beveridge became the new champion by a score of 2 and 1 in the final.
Ayrshire Golf Association President David Miller (Kilmarnock Barassie) presented vouchers to both finalists at the conclusion of the match before handing the trophy and commemmorative medal over to the 2011 winner.

LUKE GODDARD THREE CLEAR IN PGA EUROPRO TOUR EVENT

LUKE Goddard is closing in on his first victory on the PGA EuroPro Tour and holds a three-shot lead ahead of the final day.
Hendon-based Goddard, who finished tied second last week at Formby Hall in Merseyside, maintained his good form on day two of the Lingfield Park Championship 2011 in Surrey .
He began Thursday’s play joint second after an opening day round of -3 (68) but performed even better today with a score of 66 (-5) to move on to eight-under for the tournament.
A strong finish, which included birdies at five of the last six holes, left him with a three-shot advantage over Chris Hanson (Woodsome Hall, Huddersfield ).
Hanson, who is set to return to the top of the Order of Merit, has a chance of becoming the first golfer since 2007 to win three events in the same season.
He has already triumphed at Bovey Castle in Devon and Galgorm Castle in Ballymena , Northern Ireland and he registered the lowest score on Thursday.
His effort of 65 (-6) saw him enjoy a flawless round and end with birdies at both the 17th and 18th holes.
Elsewhere, a host of golfers are on -2, while Darryn Lloyd, James Watts ( East Herts ) and Tom Sherreard (Chart Hills) are all on -1.
Anthony McDonald (Coombe Wood, Surrey) enjoyed the best day of his season so far as his score of 69 (-2), which included a run of six birdies in ten holes, saw him make the cut for the first time in 2011.
The top 50 players plus ties have qualified for the third day where a final round will determine who collects the £10,000 first prize.
All of the action is being filmed by Matchroom Sport, who will produce a two-hour highlights package and this will be broadcast on Sky Sports on Wednesday, August 24.

POWERADE PGA ASSISTANTS CHAMPIONSHIP NEWS AND SCORES

FROM THE PGA WEBSITE
A quartet of players found the right notes to be in perfect harmony at the top of the leaderboard after the opening round of the Powerade PGA Assistants' Championship in association with FootJoy at East Sussex National.
Tournament first-timers Glyn Bateman (Eastbourne Golf Park), Paul Newman (East Berkshire) and Cennydd Mills (Ridgeway) plus St Mellion's Jack Stevenson, who is making a second successive appearance, carded a one-under-par 71 to draw first blood over the testing East Course.
They were the only players in the 120-strong field to shoot under-par in the £30,000 event, which carries a top prize of £5,000 and entry into the end-of-season Titleist PGA Play-Offs in Turkey, which offers the leading finishers European and Challenge Tour starts.
The early starters of Bateman, Newman and Stevenson, who could draw on having the played the course before, were the major beneficiaries of going out in the morning as the wind picked up in the afternoon.
Bateman, who has lived in the county all his life apart from three years to study in the US, admitted his knowledge of the course assisted him in setting the clubhouse target.
"I've played the course a lot and it normally gets the better of me but I am learning how to play it," said the 28-year-old first year assistant, who stood at four-under-par at one stage only to let his grip slip over his closing holes.
"In the pro-am, I played probably the best I have all year. I was quite confident that if I could keep that going I could shoot under par.
"I played great, was really solid and really happy with the way I hit the ball. I worked on my putting late last night hoping it was going to go well today as it's been a bit ropey recently, and it worked out as I holed out anything from within six feet, apart from one."
Cornishman Stevenson, who finished tied 18th last year, quickly joined Bateman and put his improvement on 12 months ago down to St Mellion head PGA professional Darren Gass.
"I'm lucky that my head pro at St Mellion, Darren Gass, is really good as he helps out with my coaching," he said.
"I've been working with him on my game which has paid dividends as I've been putting some good scores in.
"I'm definitely happy with my score. I played last year and had a steady start for a couple of rounds of 74 so it's nice to get under par."
Newman, winner of the South Region qualifier over the course just a month ago and from the same club as last year's champion Guy Woodman, showed a dogged spirit to join the leaders after a disastrous start, having started on the 10th.
He said: "I was really pleased with my score. I started off really badly as I was three-over through six holes but I managed to get a late eagle on the seventh, which gave me some confidence to roll the putter.
"It was a bit of a grind over my front nine but I managed to get it back in the end. It was tough out there with the wind.
"Having won the qualifier here I knew, despite the slow start, that I could make birdies, which I did late on. I just need a quicker start really."
Late finisher Mills, another to have tried his luck on the PGA Europro Tour and Challenge Tour, admitted turning his back on playing full-time to undergo his PGA training has improved his game - despite the constraints on his time.
He said: "I've been playing alright and I am just trying to enjoy it. I got bogged down trying to play too hard and playing full-time. It's a breath of fresh air this year.
"I came into the tournament playing decent but it is still all down to how you do on the day. I've not been able to practise as much as I would like due to work and studying so my form is a bit hit and miss.
"Today was a case of staying patient and plodding along. I could've been a couple more under but I just missed a few putts coming in, but I made a good par on the last so I was happy to come in under par."
Three players sit at level par, Birmingham-based Adam Norman, Christopher Cutchie (Colchester) and Malcolm Isaacs (Nairn Dunbar.)
Last year's runner-up Kevin Harper (Sidmouth), who qualified for the tournament at East Sussex National, found the going tougher as he posted a four-over-par 76 to lie in a share of 32nd place.
The top 40 and ties will make the cut for Friday's final round.

KENNY SUBREGIS OF FRANCE LEADING BRITISH BOYS QUALIFIER

FROM THE R AND A WEBSITE
Kenny Subregis heads the British Boys Amateur Championship going into the match play stages.
Kenny Subregis leads the qualifiers at the end of the stroke play stage of the 85th Boys Amateur Championship, staged at Burnham and Berrow and Enmore Park Golf Clubs in Somerset.
The 16-year-old French international will be the No. 1 seed for the match play stage which starts on Thursday after putting together rounds of 71 and 68 to finish on three-under-par 139 and with a three shot advantage over Callum Mackay from Burhill Golf Club in Surrey.
Mackay matched Subregis’ second round 68 to finish a single shot ahead of Bisbury’s Samuel Edwards while Richard Broadhurst from Italy, overnight leader Stefan Still from Germany, Guray Yuzici from Turkey, Jonathan Grey from Hever Castle, Italian Domenico Geminiani and Hallamshire Golf Club’s Matthew Fitzpatrick all shared fourth place on two-over-par 144.
One shot further back, English International Max Orrin, from North Foreland, carded a fine two-under-par 69 to haul himself up into a tie for tenth place alongside Paul Kinnear (Formby), Wiliam Whiteoak (Bingley St Ives), William Aldred (Brocket Hall), Patrick Kelly (Boston West) and Gianmaria Trinchero from Italy, while last year’s runner-up, Maximilian Rottluff from Germany scored his second successive 73 to share 16th place with Callum Shinkwin (Moor Park) and Nathan Kimsey (Woodhall Spa), Robin Jonsson (Sweden), Gary Hurley (West Waterford), Cameron Shaw (Chevin), Hugh Campbell (West Essex), Jon Rahm (Spain), Ryan Pope (Exeter) and Keagan Cummings (Elm Park) on 146.
Subregis came into the Boys Amateur Championship in a rich vein of form, having reached the third round of The Amateur Championship at Hillside before claiming an impressive seven shot victory in the European Young Masters tournament in Hungary, and he maintained his momentum despite blustery conditions that made scoring extremely difficult for the 252-strong multi-national field.
The Frenchman opened his account with a 71 at Burnham and Berrow and was still level par after nine holes at Enmore Park before carding birdies on the 471-yard par-4 11th, the 320-yard par-4 17th and the 496-yard par-5 18th to leave the rest of the qualifiers trailing in his wake.
Mackay posted a 74 during the opening round at Burnham and Berrow but got back to one-over-par with an eagle at Enmore Park’s 491-yard par-5 6th hole. He dropped a shot at the 385-yard par-4 8th and another at the 471-yard par-4 11th but then stormed home with three birdies over his closing three holes.
A total of 73 competitors from 13 countries made it through to the match play stage of the Championship. They include Oliver Carr, Matthew Fitzpatrick, Patrick Kelly, Nathan Kimsey, Paul Kinnear, Max Orrin, Callum Shinkwin and Toby Tree who were all members of the victorious English team at last week’s Boys Home internationals at Royal St David’s Golf Club in Harlech plus 65 other players from Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Spain, France, Germany, Austria, Turkey, Italy, Sweden, Belgium and Poland.
However, there were some notable casualties ahead of the match play stage that will identify the successor to Spain’s Adrian Otaegui, who defeated Rottluff by 4 and 3 in last year’s final at Kilmarnock Barassie.
Recent Carris Trophy winner, Harry Casey, from Enfield, was among the golfers who missed the cut which fell at nine-over-par 151. He added a 76 to his opening 79 to miss out by four shots.
The same fate befell Ewan Scott, from the St Andrews Club, who a couple of years ago became the first Scot to win the English Under-14 title. He played in the same group as Casey but finished on 158 after rounds of 81 and 77.
Scott’s fellow Scottish international, Joshua Jamieson, from the New Club, St Andrews, was also among those golfers who missed out on the match play stages. The reigning Scottish Boys Stroke Play champion began his tilt for the title with a ruinous 83 over Burnham and Berrow. He improved that score by ten shots at Enmore Park but still missed out by five shots.
However, it was not all doom and gloom for the Scottish entrants, particularly at one well-known club in the South West of the country. Incredibly, Dumfries & County will provide three of the 73 qualifiers for the match play stage after Greig Marchbank (73-76), Daniel McConnachie (71-78) and Liam Johnston (75-74) all finished on seven-over-par 149. Johnston, the last of the trio to complete his round, carded birdies on the last two holes to tie his team-mates.
The other Scottish qualifiers were Grant Forrest from Craigielaw (77-71-148), Bradley Neil from Blairgowrie (73-76-149) and Lawrence Allan from Alva (72-78-150).
