FORMER BOY WONDER LIAW NOW WORKS WITH SCOT MARK LAMB

FROM USGA WEBSITE
Beaumont, California – Henry Liaw was a can't-miss kid who appeared destined for stardom. He was all of 15 years old when he won the 2001 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship at Oak Hills Country Club in San Antonio, Texas, and the following year he advanced to the quarter-finals of the U.S. Amateur, where he lost to Hunter Mahan
But a funny thing happened on the way to fame and fortune. Henry never made it on the US PGA Tour and struggled for several years in Europe, China, Japan and Korea before settling into his current role as head professional at Morongo Golf Club at Tukwet Canyon, located in this Riverside County community about 80 miles east of Los Angeles.
Though his career in golf didn't turn out exactly the way he had planned, he is happy with what he is doing. To a point.

"I miss playing a lot," he said, "especially when you watch guys you grew up with, like Anthony Kim, doing as well as they are. You see that and you're like, ‘Man, I want to go out there.’ This is different, but it's fun, too."
Liaw, who turns 26 in September, works with juniors at an academy he runs at the club with former Scottish boys open stroke-play champion MARK LAMB, and he is an assistant coach for the women's team at the University of Redlands, an NCAA Division III program that just enjoyed the best season in its five-year history.

Redlands’ top player, junior Tracy Saracino of Englewood, Colo., who has been ranked as high as eighth nationally in Division III, said she had not heard of Liaw before he started working with the team, and it was only after doing some research that she discovered he not only won the U.S. Junior Amateur but once shot a 58 at Alhambra (Calif.) Municipal Golf Course when he was 13 years old.

"My jaw just kind of dropped open," Saracino recalled. "I was amazed at what he had done. I was so excited because our program was kind of new and I thought this was going to be great for Redlands, having such an amazing addition."

Head women's coach Art Salvesen said the impact Liaw has had on the team is hard to describe.

"His professionalism and the way he is around the girls really impressed me," Salvesen said. "The short-game lessons we got with him are phenomenal. His name is also a draw. We're starting to build a women's program and of the six new recruits about half of them brought up Henry's name.
"They know what he did."
But Liaw still has regrets over what he didn't do.
"My goal was to always play here in the U.S., but I couldn't break through," he said of trying to make the PGA Tour. "Each year you go to [qualifying] school and you're missing it. After a while it takes a toll. You hear about guys like Mac O'Grady trying 17 times; are you kidding me? I'd rather use that money on my kids' education or something.
"I just got kind of burned out a little bit."

It was late in 2009 when he said he "decided to start over." He had grown tired of constant traveling and not seeing his wife, Meggie, for more than two months out of the year.

But he never grew tired of the memories, particularly those from 10 years ago at the 54th U.S. Junior Amateur. He defeated Richard Scott of Canada, 2 and 1, in a final that ended a gruelling week in which Liaw fell four holes shy of the Junior Amateur record for most match-play holes needed to win a championship. Liaw played 104 holes in six rounds, including a 22-hole victory over Ryan Cochran, son of former PGA Tour pro/current Champions Tour player Russ Cochran, in the second round.

Liaw says he might pull out pictures of that championship from time to time, but he doesn't talk about it much unless someone asks him what he did for a living before he arrived at Morongo Golf Club. If you're looking for awards or other mementos from his highly successful junior days, you'll have to visit his parents' home in Rowland Heights, Calif., more than an hour's drive west.
"My mom (Cindy) has every trophy," he said.

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Team captain Nigel Edwards and his 18-strong squad of potential members of the Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup squad to play the Americans at Royal Aberdeen on September 10-11 will spend tomorrow (Wednesday) morning  walking over the Balgownie links.
"We couldn't really get anything done today (Tuesday) because all the players had not arrived but they will all have checked in by the morning and I plan take them over the course, hole by hole, before lunchtime on Wednesday" said Welshman Edwards, pictured, who played in four Walker Cup matches and is now employed by the Welsh Golf Union.
Of the 18 players, Scottish champion Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck), Scottish open stroke-play champion Andy Sullivan (Nuneaton), Banchory's James Byrne and Welshman Alastair Jones (Radyr) missed the initital Walker Cup practice squad get-together at Balgownie in May for one reason or another.
"We'll play a Stableford in the afternoon and then foursomes and singles on Thursday," said Edwards who says he would be delighted if spectators came along.
Entry to the course for this week's practice is free of charge and car parking is also free.
For the Walker Cup match itself, the tickets cost £25 per day.
The players walking the Balgownie links this morning (Wed) will include Tom Lewis, the Englishman who shared the first-round lead in the Open and who eventually won the Silver Medal as leading amateur.
The players at Balgownie will be:
Tom Lewis (Welwyn Garden City), Paul Cutler (Portstewart), Jack Senior (Heysham), Steven Brown (Wentworth), Rhys Pugh (Vale of Glamorgan), Kevin Phelan (Waterford), Kris Nicol (Fraserburgh), Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck), Andy Sullivan (Nuneaton), James Byrne (Banchory), Alastair Jones (Radyr), Stiggy Hodgson (Sunningdale), Tyrrell Hatton (Harleyford), Rhys Enoch (Truro), Ross Kellett (Colville Park), Oliver Farr (Ludlow), Darren Wright (Rowlands Castle), Alan Dunbar (Rathmore).

JACK McDONALD, WINNER IN 2009, LEADS SCOTTISH BOYS' FIELD

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Jack McDonald, the 2009 title-winner from Kilmarnock Barassie, is on the trail of Stephen Gallacher's double-whammy success in the Scottish Under-18 boys' amateur open stroke-play golf championship at Nairn Dunbar Golf Club.
Gallacher, now a successful European Tour pro, won the boys' stroke-play crown in back-to-back years: 1991 and 1992.
He was the last player to win this title twice.
McDonald, pictured right in 2009 with his haul of trophies, cannot obviously duplicate Gallacher's two-in-a-row feat but a two-under-par 70 to lead the first round at Nairn Dunbar is a great start to follow up his success of two years ago over four rounds at Ladybank.
McDonald had a little bit of a wobble just after the turn, having covered the first nine holes in a best of the day three-under-par 32 with birdies at the second, fifth and sixth.
Bogeys at the short 11th and 12th threatened to derail his effort but he covered the last six holes in one under par, thanks to a birdie at the long 16th.
Four players are breathing down his neck on the 71 mark, including Nairn's Sean Burgess who won the North District boys' title earlier this month and knows the Nairn Dunbar course almost as well as his home links.
Sean was struggling a bit with bogeys at the fifth and short eighth but he stopped the rote and covered the remaining holes in three under par with birdies at three par-5s: the ninth, 13th and 16th.
Also on 71 is Danile Hendry, all the way from the United Arab Emirates. He had more birdies than anyone - five in all, at the short third, short sixth, long ninth, long 16th and long 18th ... but he had to make up for a double bogey 6 at the seventh and single shots dropped at the 10th and short 15th.

SCOTT LITTLE, GARY THOMSON SET PACE AT LOSSIEMOUTH

Two-under-par 68s led the way after Day 1 of the 106th Moray Open at Lossiemouth.
Scott Little and Gary Thomson of the host club shared the honours by one stroke from Malcolm L Macleman - also a Moray Golf Club member.
Scott opened badly with a double bogey 6 then birdied four of the next five holes. Gary played more steadily with three birdies against a solitary bogey, also at the first.

Shot of the day was at the 11th hole of the New Course where Alex. W Mair, partnered by William Stewart and John Meichan, holed his his tee shot at the 151yd par-3 hole, using a 9 iron.

John Meichan comfortably led the handicap section with a net 63 off a 7 handicap. He birdied his last two holes to finish with a level par 70.

DARREN CLARKE ALMOST QUIT GOLF AFTER AN 81 IN MOROCCO

FROM THE BELFAST TELEGRAPH WEBSITE
Darren Clarke's agent has claimed that the Northern Irishman almost quit golf just months before his stunning success at The Open last weekend.
The 42-year-old secured his first major title with a nerveless final-round display to beat Americans Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson by three strokes. The celebrations that followed were, however, a far cry from Clarke's state of mind in April after he apparently contemplated giving the sport away after a poor run of form culminated in a round of 81 in Morocco.
Clarke's agent, and friend, Andrew Chandler has revealed he convinced the Irishman to instead take a short break from the game - advice that has proved astute as he returned to win in Mallorca before his Open triumph.
"He was so low he thought about giving it up," Chandler was reported as saying in The Guardian.
"It was the lowest I have ever seen him. He wasn't hitting the ball like he used to in Morocco, so I told him to take extra holiday.
"He went away for three weeks and came back refreshed."
