ROOKIE KIRK WINS US PGA TOUR'S VIKING CLASSIC

FROM THE GOLF.COM WEBSITE
MADISON, Miss. -- Chris Kirk won his first US PGA Tour event with a one-stroke victory in the Viking Classic, shooting a 4-under 68 to beat Tom Pernice Jr. and George McNeill by one stroke.
The 26-year-old rookie tied the tournament record with a 22-under performance over four rounds, taking advantage of Annandale Golf Club's soft greens and fairway. He broke a tie with McNeill on No. 17, hitting a 140-yard approach over water to within five feet of the hole for an easy birdie putt.
The 51-year-old Pernice fell just short in his attempt to become the second-oldest winner in tour history, missing a birdie putt on No. 18.
Kirk is the fifth rookie to win this season -- only the second time that's happened since 1970.

RUSSELL KNOX WINS $99,000 FOR FIRST NATIONWIDE TOUR VICTORY

OPPORTUNITY KNOX! Russell Knox has the best Sunday of his golfing career. Picture by courtesy of Getty Images (c).

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Inverness-born Russell Knox tried in vain to get an invitation to the recent Barclays Scottish Open at Castle Stuart. Apparently, he didn't have enough on his US pro golf CV to swing a place on the European Tour event.
He does now!
Today, Knox won in only his ninth event on American's No 2 pro circuit, the Nationwide Tour.
The 26-year-old former Scotland youth cap did it with brilliant scoring - a 25 under par total of 263 to win the Chiquita Classic at TPC Rivers Bend, Cincinnati, Ohio.
Knox's cash prize was his highest ever, $99,000 to add to the $70,947 he had won from his first eight events on the Nationwide Tour after several years of money-making on the Hooters Tour.
Knox had 28 birdies and only three bogeys over the 54 holes with rounds of 68, 66, 63 and 66 over a par-72 lay-out.
He won by three shots from American Billy Hurley (67-65-70-64).
Englishman Greg Owen, who lost his US PGA Tour card at the end of last season, tied for third place on 268 with rounds of 67, 70, 64 and 67.
Another Englishman in the field, Gary Christian, tied for 27th place on 275 with scores of 70, 69, 67 and 69.
Knox's stats in the event were impressive. He was only 41st in the driving table but still average 300yd off the tee. He led the way in hitting greens in regulation with an 84.50% average and he was also No in in restricting his putts per green hit in regulation to 1.550.
Russell's family home was quite close to where they have built the Castle Stuart course. He left - and didn't come back - to go to America and spent four successful years (in the company of Duncan Stewart of Grantown on Spey) on the US college golf circuit as a student at Jacksonville University, Florida.
He stayed on at Jacksonville Beach after graduating and turned pro over there, becoming one of the most consistent money-winners on the Hooters Tour, one of America's leading satellite circuits.
Earlier this season he won a place in a Nationwide Tour event through the Monday qualifying system - and finished second, winning a big enough cheque to earn him a regular place on American's No 2 pro circuit.
As far as playing in the Barclays Scottish Open at Castle Stuart is concerned, Russell told Scottishgolfview.com:
"I did send a letter and E-mail this year but no luck. I would love nothing better than to play in that event now that it has moved to Castle Stuart which is only a 10 min drive from my old house."

ALLYN DICK'S REPEAT WIN IN LANARK'S NEWLANDS TROPHY

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Kingsknowe's Allyn Dick won the SGU Order of Merit's Newlands Trophy 72-hole event at Lanark Golf Club today for the second year in a row.
Dick, pictured by Cal Carson Golf Agency,had scores 68, 66, 71 and 70 for a total of five-under-par 275.
He won by one stroke from James White (Lundin), the 2006 Scottish boys match-play champion and winner of the Tennant Cup last month.
Ross Noon (Craigielaw) was third on 277 (70-71-68-68) while Graeme Robertson (Glenbervie) had yet another top-5 finish, tieing with Sam Binning (Ranfurly Castle) on 278 for joint fourth place.
Dick, twice Scottish mid-amateur champion before he gained his first cap for Scotland in last year's home internationals, took lead by three shots at half way but White produced a great third-round 66 to Dick's 71 to share the lead, three strokes clear of the field, going into the final round.
Dick edged out his rival over the last 18 holes with a par-matching 70 to the Fifer's 71.
Dick has strong ties to Lanarkshire. He has been Shotts club champion for the past seven years and is a former West of Scotland champion.

OPEN CHAMPION CLARKE JOINS NORTHERN IRELAND MAJOR CLUB

AT 42, DARREN'S  THE OLDEST

CLARET JUG WINNER SINCE 1967

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Darren Clarke today became the oldest Open Champion since 1967 and sparked yet another party across Northern Ireland.
Just a month after Rory McIlroy became the youngest US Open winner since 1933 and a year after Graeme McDowell's triumph in the same event, Clarke joined his fellow Ulstermen in the Major club with an astonishing performance at Sandwich.
The 42 year old, 111th in the Official World Golf Ranking, lifted the Claret Jug at his 20th attempt.
He did so by three shots from Americans Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson, extending The European Tour’s record winning streak in the four Majors to six going back to Mickelson's victory in last year's Masters Tournament.
"It's incredible - it really is," said Clarke (picture above from the R and A website, becoming emotional when mention was made of his two sons, left motherless in 2006 when his wife Heather died of breast cancer.
"It's for the kids," he added.
Nobody has ever waited so long and then won The Open, yet with a closing 70 in more wind and rain Clarke finished his 54th Major with a five under par total of 275.
The former Ryder Cup star - hero of the 2006 victory six weeks after he lost his wife - could even enjoy the walk up the final fairway knowing the job was done.
He had just dropped a shot on the 17th and could even afford to three-putt the last for another bogey.
With that Clarke, with his two sons at home in Portrush, punched the air repeatedly, took his cap off and waved it to all parts and hugged caddie John Mulrooney.
Dane Thomas Bjorn, fourth this time, failed to hang on to a three shot lead with four to play on the course in 2003, but Clarke never looked like tossing away a four shot lead handed to him when Johnson went out of bounds on the 14th and Mickelson ran up four bogeys in six holes.
"I'm a bit speechless," Clarke stated. "The last couple of holes I was trying not to make stupid mistakes and just play really careful."
Mickelson, who like Clarke made his debut in 1991, had earlier charged into the joint lead by playing the first seven in an incredible five under par, but he came home in 38 and had to settle for improving his previous best Open finish of third at Royal Troon seven years ago.
Only two players have ever won their first Major when older than Clarke – 45 year old Jerry Barber at the 1961 US PGA Championship and 44 year old Roberto De Vicenzo at the 1967 Open.
And in The Open alone only three champions have been older than Clarke - De Vicenzo, Harry Vardon and Old Tom Morris.
Not that Clarke is the lowest-ranked player to triumph at Royal St George's, however. Ben Curtis was 396th eight years ago.
Clarke had the vital initial boost of a 15 foot par putt on the first, then went two ahead with a five footer on the next and three in front when he saved par on the difficult short third from nine feet and Johnson missed from six.
A drive into rough on the fourth - the hardest hole on the course all week - led to his first bogey of the day, but he could never have expected that as he parred the next he would be caught by Mickelson.
Plenty had birdied the second, but when he added another from 14 feet for only the second one all weekend on the fourth the charge was on.
Mickelson went to three under for the day by finding the target from almost 30 feet on the short sixth, then hit his second to 25 feet at the 564 yard next and eagled it to go joint top.
The weather was starting to turn nasty at that stage, but Clarke has often prospered in such conditions in the past and he did again when he answered Mickelson's eagle with one of his own from slightly shorter range.
Two in front again as a result, he stayed there with a real "luck of the Irish" moment at the 412 yard ninth when his low recovery from the left rough skipped over a bunker and found the green.
His par there took him to the turn in 33, brilliant in its own right but outshone by Mickelson's remarkable best-of-the-week 30 - and that he had missed ten foot chances at the eighth and ninth.
There was one between them when the American made an 18 footer on the next, but he missed a three foot par attempt on the next, a six footer at the 13th, had another bogey after driving into sand two holes later and three-putted the 16th.
Johnson was four back at the turn, birdied the tenth and 12th to move into second place, but then hit his second shot out of bounds down the long 14th - the hole where Swede Henrik Stenson had taken 11 earlier in the day.
His double bogey 7 gave Clarke an even bigger cushion than Bjorn had had in 2003. Bjorn could not complete the task, but Clarke did - and let the party begin.
He had just become £900,000 richer and at a stroke - or rather 275 of them - had moved back into the game's top 30.

Open Silver Medal amateur Lewis plays at Balgownie this midweek

FROM THE GOLF.COM WEBSITE
Tom Lewis has won the Silver Medal for the Open Championship's best amateur player after finishing three shots clear of American rival, World No 2 amateur Peter Uihlein.
The 20-year-old from Hertfordshire had been blown off course by the wind and rain on Saturday when he slumped to a third round 76 to stand five over.
But Lewis, pictured right when he was first at Balgownie in May for a Walker Cup practice, showed spirit to recover well on Sunday with a 74, blighted only by a triple-bogey eight at the long 14th.
He said: "It has been an amazing Open. I couldn't have asked for more."
Lewis added: "The first day was wonderful. It's just a shame [that during] the last three days I haven't played anywhere near as well as I'd hoped."
He admitted that his tough weekend experience had helped made up his mind about not yet turning professional. As a result, he will be eligible to play in September's Walker Cup.
Lewis can be seen in action - free of charge - at Royal Aberdeen's Balgownie Links on the GB and I Walker Cup practice squad's three-day session (Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday) this week.
The young amateur explained: "After the first round, I thought of possibly turning pro and becoming a millionaire. But that's not going to happen now.
Continue reading the main story I was just happy to play with Tom Watson and Henrik Stenson, and Phil Mickelson too. And I hope I can maybe one day come back and win
"I've got things to learn, as I've lost by about 20 shots this week."If you're going to play with the best players in the world, you have to chip and putt like they do.

"Hopefully I can just play well in the coming weeks and we'll see what happens.

"I'd love to play in the Walker Cup in September. I've made every team possible as an amateur, so Walker Cup would be excellent."

After two days in the inspiring presence of Tom Watson, Lewis was on Saturday paired with another multiple major winner, Phil Mickelson.

Lewis said: "I feel like I'm ready in certain areas, but playing with Phil Mickelson made me feel terrible around the greens."

He began the final round of his first Open with a bogey but immediately made amends with a birdie at the second before sinking a 35-foot eagle putt at the long seventh.

He was back to level for the round again when he ran up a double-bogey at the ninth, but managed to birdie the 10th.

Things went downhill from there, though, with five dropped shots over the final seven holes, including that triple-bogey at 14 when he put his second shot, a three-wood, out of bounds.

But that negative was not enough to spoil a memorable week for Lewis.

He said: "I was just happy to play with Tom Watson and Henrik Stenson, and Phil Mickelson too.

"And I hope I can maybe one day come back and win."
