REPORT, RESULTS FROM ANGUS v NORTH BOYS AT MONIFIETH

There were mixed fortunes for Angus boys in their annual fixture against the North at Monifieth today. For the under-18s in the morning foursomes the only success came from Callum Rennie (making his county debut) in partnership with Ewen Matthew.
In the afternoon singles, only Monifieth's Calum McKay could manage a half point against a very strong North team. Downfield's 15 year old seven-handicapper Josh McKenna deserves a special mention for coming in as a late reserve and on his county debut, taking the experienced Jordan Shaw all the way to the 17th.
The Angus under-16s had their first success for three seasons with a comprehensive win over their North counterparts. Downfield's Scott Grant and Kirriemuir's Ross Dallas had a 100% record for the day and Caird Park's Connar Cook had a fine singles win over the highly-rated Andrew Burgess.
The Angus under-14s also had their first success for three seasons with an excellent victory over the North under-14s with most of the boys contributing to the points tally. Sean Colvin of Ballumbie deserves a special mention for his 8 and 7 singles win on his county debut.
County Junior Convenor Alex McKay puts the turn around in fortunes from past seasons down to a new county talent ID initiative and all the hard work the boys have put in during the winter months with coaches Karyn Dallas and Gordon McLeod.

FUND-RAISING TOPS £30,000 AT CASTLE STUART GOLF LINKS

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE EUROPEAN TOURFund-raising efforts at Castle Stuart Golf Links last week saw more than £30,000 raised for Action for Children, Scotland, the Official Charity of The 2011 Barclays Scottish Open.
Spearheading the fund-raising was the Barclays Birdie Pledge, with Barclays Capital pledging £10 for every birdie, £50 for every eagle and £100 for every albatross scored during the tournament.
The pledge was supported by the Tour Players Foundation, the charitable arm of The European Tour, with nearly £24,000 raised as a result of the 1,608 birdies and 54 eagles scored on the course by the star-studded field of professionals.
That figure was supplemented by donations made by the spectators through collections in the tented village and a silent auction in the hospitality units, featuring a wide variety of sports and entertainment lots donated by the event’s sponsors and partners, which added more than £6,000 to the money raised during the week, taking the overall total to £30,770.67.
Ann Darlington, Group Manager of Children’s Services, Scotland, said: “We would like to thank Barclays Capital, The European Tour and the players for raising such a fantastic total, which we are extremely grateful for and will use to further our work with the vulnerable and neglected children of Scotland.”
Peter Adams, Barclays Scottish Open Championship Director, said: “The birdie pledge led by Barclays is a true example of what golf can do for such a good cause as Action for Children and, combined with the other activity that took place on site, everyone involved can be rightly proud of the amount raised.”
Simon Eaton, Managing Director, Barclays Capital, said: “We are delighted that the Barclays Scottish Open raised more than £30,000 for Action for Children, Scotland. This money was raised by a very successful Barclays Birdie Pledge, despite the tournament being shortened to 54 holes, combined with generous donations from The European Tour, the Tour Players Foundation and spectators. The Barclays Scottish Open, in partnership with Action for Children, will now help fund a number of local initiatives, supporting some of the most vulnerable and neglected children in the Highlands of Scotland.”
Action for Children works with vulnerable, disadvantaged, abused, neglected children, young people and their families. In the Highlands alone, they have ten services running concurrently in Inverness (two), Nairn, Forres, Alness and Dingwall, Elgin, Lochaber, Buckie and Aberdeen.

FOUR SCOTS MAKE THE CUT IN CHALLENGE TOUR SWISS EVENT

From Challenge Tour Press Officer Paul Symes
Ian Keenan signed for a sparkling round of 64 at the Credit Suisse Challenge to join rising star Andrea Pavan at the top of the leaderboard at the midway stage of the €150,000 Challenge Tour event.
Keenan, who graduated from the EuroPro Tour last year, has struggled to make an impact in his first full season on the Challenge Tour, having missed the cut in eight of the 11 events in which he has competed. But the 35 year old from Liverpool banished the disappointment with six birdies and an eagle to move to nine under par at Golf Sempachersee near Lucerne, Switzerland.
Keenan credited a holed wedge shot for an eagle two on the ninth hole as the spark that ignited his round, which bettered his previous lowest round on the Challenge Tour by two strokes – albeit with preferred lies in operation.
He said: “I had a great time out there today, and I just continued where I left off yesterday really. I made good birdies on the first, fifth and seventh holes, so I got off to a good start. I then found the semi-rough on the ninth, and wasn’t really thinking about anything else but finding the middle of the green, and walking away with a par. But I hit the perfect wedge, and in she went.
"I haven’t holed a long shot like that for a few years, so it was a massive bonus and all of a sudden I started thinking it might be my day. Everything I did after that was positive, except for the bogey on the 15th, where I got what I deserved after a poor tee shot.
"But to hit straight back with a birdie on the 16th was huge for my confidence and my momentum, so that was probably shot of the day.
“I’m just happy to be in contention, because it’s been a terrible year so far. I expected a lot more from myself after playing well on the EuroPro Tour last year, but for whatever reason it just hasn’t happened for me this year. But sometimes you only need one good week to kick-start your season, and I’m hoping this week is that week. We’ll just have to wait and see what the next two days bring.”
Pavan enhanced his burgeoning reputation with a round of 67 which would have been even lower but for a funny turn in the middle of his round.
The Italian, who turned professional at the start of the year, opened his account with a gain at the ninth hole, and duly reeled off four straight birdies from the 12th – where he chipped in – to the 15th hole – where he sunk a huge putt – to surge clear of the chasing pack.
After finding the middle of the 17th fairway, Pavan had designs on carding his fifth birdie of the day, only to mishit his approach and take three putts for an untidy bogey. To compound the error he again three-putted the next green, this time for a double bogey, to undo all his hard work.
But Pavan regained his poise in impressive fashion to register three birdies on the way home for a four under par round of 67.
He said: “I played pretty well, although I still don’t feel I’m right at the top of my game. I don’t know what happened on the 17th and 18th – it was weird. I was in the middle of the fairway both times and ended up making bogey-double bogey. I didn’t hit especially bad approach shots, but I got a little bit unlucky and then three-putted both greens. So from going along nicely, suddenly I’d dropped three shots out of nowhere. It was like the lights had gone out. It could’ve had a snowball effect, but I was very happy with the way I handled it, because I played very well on my back nine.”
Argentina’s Pablo del Grosso currently shares third place on eight under par alongside Frenchman Benjamin Hebert, Denmark’s Daniel Lokke and home favourite Nicolas Sulzer.

DONALD, WESTWOOD, HARRINGTON, McDOWELL MISS OPEN CUT

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
It's still anybody's Open - there are only seven shots between the joint leaders on four-under-par 136 and the limit qualifying mark of three-over 143.
Darren Clarke, as proud as anyone about what is already a golden era for Irish golf, has the chance this weekend to add another chapter to the remarkable story.
Three weeks after he was present to celebrate Rory McIlroy's runaway US Open Championship win, the 42 year old shares the halfway lead in The Open Championship with American Lucas Glover.
Clarke has not had a top-ten finish in a Major for a decade, but a second successive 68 at Royal St George's takes him into the weekend on four under par.
And with the two first day pacesetters, English amateur Tom Lewis and Dane Thomas Björn, having rounds of 74 and 72 respectively, it is the hero of the 2006 Ryder Cup who will occupy centre stage when he tees off on Saturday.
Clarke was unbeaten that week at The K Club in a match played just six weeks after his wife Heather lost her fight with breast cancer.
Now engaged to a former Miss Northern Ireland, Alison Campbell, and back living in Portrush rather than Surrey, the father of two is old enough not to get carried away with the position he finds himself in.
Fourteen years on from his runner-up finish at Royal Troon, he said after sinking a 20 foot birdie putt on the last: "Obviously this is only after two rounds - there is an awful long way to go yet.
"And I believe the forecast for the weekend is very, very poor. I quite look forward to that, but the course is going to play very, very tough.
"If that's the case, then the tournament is still wide open for an awful lot of players and will be."
The fact remains, however, that he is two rounds from possibly joining a major club that now includes not only McIlroy, but also their fellow Northern Irishman Graeme McDowell and Dubliner Padraig Harrington, the man who got the ball rolling when he had back-to-back Opens and then a US PGA Championship as well.
Clarke's round began with laughter.
"That was somebody whistling at me when I was bending over stretching," he explained.
"I said 'I hope that was a lady', but he whistled again, same guy. I'm doing something all wrong."
Not in his personal life, though.
"I've got a wonderful fiancee. Alison is a great girl and instrumental in my getting my life back on track," he added.
Clarke, lucky to be out in the calmer conditions on day two, owes his place in his 20th Open to taking the 30th and last exempt spot off last year's Race to Dubai by less than €2,000.
A double bogey on the fourth, where a chip came back down a steep slope, was cancelled out by an eagle putt of around 80 feet just three holes later.
Four birdies and three bogeys followed, but he had the lead in the clubhouse on his own for a mere ten minutes. Glover was in the following group.
Lewis saw 61 year old playing partner Tom Watson hole-in-one at the sixth in the day's most electrifying moment, but by scoring nine more than his lowest-ever round by an amateur in the event the 20 year old from Welwyn Garden City dropped out of the top ten.
Björn is now joint third with Spain's Miguel Angel Jiménez, German Martin Kaymer and American Chad Campbell.
Most early eyes had been on Young Tom and Old Tom - Lewis and five-time champion Watson.
Watson's ace with a four iron was the 15th hole-in-one of his life, his four iron hopping in on the first bounce.
The 2009 runner-up - he would have been the oldest Major Champion by 11 years if only he had parred the final hole at Turnberry - continued to amaze with a 70. On two over he made his 24th Open cut and extended his own record as the oldest man to play all four rounds.
Lewis had a television camera in his face the moment he left the practice putting green and, not surprisingly in the circumstances, could not repeat his first-day heroics.
He bogeyed the final two holes, avoiding going out of bounds on the last only by hitting a post, but he is still in the title hunt.
"I think if you asked me that two days ago I would have taken it, but at this moment it doesn't feel so good," he said.
Björn did well to limit the damage after a hat-trick of bogeys from the second.
"It wasn't the prettiest of days golf-wise, but I'll take where I stand in the championship right now," he commented.
McIlroy remains a threat at level par after a 69, but World Number One Luke Donald bogeyed the last four holes and missed the cut on six over.

Second-ranked Lee Westwood and former champion Harrington joined him in an early exit on four over - one shot too many.
1999 Open champion Paul Lawrie was one past Claret Jug winner who did make it through to the weekend action. He had a 70 for 143 - the limit mark for qualifying.
The only other Scot to get through was Stephen Gallacher on 141 (70-71). Martin Laird, Peter Whiteford, Scott Jamieson and Sandy Lyle were all counted out.
Apart from Lawrie, past Open champions who beat the cut are Stewart Cink (14), defending champion Louis Oosthuizen (142) and  the evergreen Tom Watson (142).
Nine past Open champions were eliminated - Harrington, Lyle, John Daly, Mark Calcavecchia, Ernie Els, Ben Curtis, Mark O'Meara, David Duval and Todd Hamilton.
The clubhouse target was set at four under par 136 by Glover and Clarke, trying to take his own ride on the wave of Irish success in golf these last few years.

Fourteen years on from his runner-up finish at Royal Troon and a decade on from his last top-ten finish in any of the Majors, the 42 year old Ulsterman sank a 20 foot birdie putt on the last for his second successive 68.Five years after losing his wife Heather to breast cancer he is engaged to Alison Campbell, a former Miss Northern Ireland he met in a blind date set up by compatriot Graeme McDowell."I've got a wonderful fiancée. Alison is a great girl and instrumental in my getting my life back on track."
Clarke owes his place in his 20th Open to taking the 30th and last exempt spot off last year's Race to Dubai by less than €2,000.
After practising first with Westwood and then with new US Open Champion Rory McIlroy - he stood level par with five holes to play - Clarke went about showing he still has what it takes, although his second circuit of the Kent course was a real roller-coaster.
A double bogey on the fourth, where a chip came back down a steep slope, was cancelled out by an eagle putt of around 80 feet just three holes later.
Four birdies and three bogeys followed, but he had the lead in the clubhoue on his own for a mere ten minutes.
In the following group America's 2009 US Open Champion Glover, without a top-20 finish in five previous trips to the event, parred the last eight holes for a 70.
Most early eyes had been on Young Tom and Old Tom – 20 year old Lewis and five-time champion Watson.
Watson's ace with a four iron was the 15th hole-in-one of his life, his four iron hopping in on the first bounce.
The 2009 runner-up - he would have been the oldest Major Champion by 11 years if only he had parred the final hole at Turnberry - continued to amaze with a 70 to make his 24th Open cut and extend his own record as the oldest man to play all four rounds.
Lewis had a television camera in his face the moment he left the practice putting green and, not surprisingly in the circumstances, could not repeat his first day heroics.
He bogeyed the final two holes, avoiding going out of bounds on the last only by hitting a post, and the Welwyn Garden City player is still in the title hunt.
"I think if you asked me that two days ago I would have taken it, but at this moment it doesn't feel so good," he said.

Lewis has only one rival for the Silver Medal that goes to the leading amateur who completes four rounds. Mind you, Peter Uihlein is quite a formidable opponent. The American has been ranked World 1 amateur. He is currently No 2 while Lewis is No 13. Lewis is tied 14th (the same mark as Phil Mickelson) on 139 (65-75); Uihlein tied 45th with a pair of 71s for 142.
Björn did well to limit the damage after a hat-trick of bogeys from the second.
"It wasn't the prettiest of days golf-wise, but I'll take where I stand in the championship right now," he commented.
McIlroy birdied the 13th and 14th, but bogeyed the next before getting up and down from a plugged lie in a bunker on the last for a 69 and level par aggregate of 140, only four shots off the pace in joint 19th position.
World No 1 Donald, though, was in desperate trouble. Three successive bogeys from the 15th left him needing a birdie at the last just to retain any hope of surviving the cut on four over. He bogeyed it so the Englishmen had gone from the sublime (winner of the Barclays Scottish Open last Sunday) to the ridiculous (failing to qualify for the last two rounds of the Open, perhaps not so ridiculous!).

Tarland-based Daniel Thompsett, a junior member of Aboyne Golf Club, completed the Paul Lawrie North-east boys’ stroke-play and match-play titles double at Westhill Golf Club today.
Thompsett, who will enrol at  Rocky Mountain College, Montana next month (he will be 18 on August 24), won the stroke play title for the second year in a row by the runaway margin of 11 shots with rounds of 69 and 65 for four-under-par total of 134. Runner-up was Newmachar’s Chris Lamb with 73 and 72 for 145.
Paul Lawrie’s two sons, Craig and Michael, tied for third place with Andrew Carrell (Peterculter) on 148. A card countback went against Michael Lawrie in deciding the four leading players to contest the match-play title for the Bill Brown Trophy
In the semi-finals, Thompsett beat Carrell 4 and 3, while Lamb beat Craig Lawrie by one hole.
In a very good final, in which the contestants completed 20 holes in little over three hours, Thompsett beat Lamb with a birdie 2 at the short second extra hole. Lamb, two down after eight, won the ninth, 11th and 13th with a two-under-par run, to go one up on the 14th tee. He was still one up on the 18th tee but Thompsett rose to the pressure by birdieing that hole to square the final and take it into extra holes.
