PETERHEAD'S PETER McLEAN IS IN THE AMATEUR Q ROUND 1 MIX

FROM THE R AND A WEBSITE
Spain's Adrian Otaegui, winner of the 2010 Boys Amateur Championship, produced the round-of-the-day at Hesketh Golf Club to finish on three-under-par, one shot behind Hillside leader Landyn Edwards of New Zealand, at the half-way stage of the stroke play qualifying stage of the 2011 Amateur Championship. Both players signed for 68s.
Eighteen-year-old Otaegui was the only man to break 70 on a difficult opening day at Hesketh. With 64 and ties after 36 holes progressing to the next stage, the Spaniard looks certain to take his place in the match play draw on Tuesday evening.
I played well today, but it doesn’t mean anything yet,” said Otaegui, who followed in the footsteps of former Boys Amateur Champions Sergio Garcia and Jose Maria Olazabal, both of whom went on to win the Amateur. “I need to forger what I did today and go out tomorrow and try to do my best.

“The Amateur is an event I would love to win – I like the history and the tradition.”

Otaegui travelled down to England’s north west after the St Andrews Links Trophy, to give himself a week to get used to two of the areas most challenging layouts.

“I played two rounds at Hillside and two at Hesketh because I wanted to get used to them before today,” he added.

It is 2011 Rotorua Open Champion Edwards, however, who tops the leaderboard after a four-under-par 68, which featured three birdies and a bogey on both the outward and inward half. Two under after 16, the Kiwi made successive birdies at the 547-yard, par-five 17th and the437-yard, par-four 18th to take the lead.

The second-best round of the day at Hillside was signed for by England’s Gregory Eason. The only player, apart from Edwards, to break par at a course described by Greg Norman as having the best back nine in Britain, Eason made 10 consecutive pars, before birdies at 11 and 17, and a bogey at the 12th took him to his one-under-par total of 71.

Back at Hesketh, three players finished with one-under-par rounds of 70. Englishmen Neil Raymond and Garrick Porteous, and Peterhead’s Philip McLean are currently tied with Eason for second place; something that didn’t come as a surprise to 24-year-old McLean.

“To be honest, it didn’t come as a surprise when I found out that 70 was right up there,” he said. “It’s firm out there – pretty tough, but the greens are receptive, so there’s always an opportunity to get close and make birdie.”

Best of the rest at Hillside were Alastair Jones of Wales, the Netherlands’ Dylan Boshart, Jason Timms of England, and Scots Greg Paterson and Walker Cup squad member Michael Stewart, each of whom recorded scores of 72.
“This, along with the US Amateur, is the biggest event of the year,” said Stewart. “But I’m just trying to enjoy it – in fact I’ve written that on my stroke saver. The conditions are so tough, but you’ve just got to grind it out and have fun.”

WHINHILLGOLFER WINS RENFREWSHIRE YOUTHS TITLE

Picture shows Kenneth Beacom, Renfrew Golf Club Captain and Anton with the trophy.RENFREWSHIRE GOLF UNION PRESS RELEASE
Donbremner@ranfurly9.freeserve.co.uk
Alex Ferguson from Paisley Golf Club and Whinhill Golf Club’s Anton O’Donnell were the finalists in the battle for the Duncan Trophy, Renfrewshire Golf Union’s Youth Match Play Championship.

In perfect conditions at Renfrew Golf Club, Anton had shown that he was on top form in the semi final when he got to the turn seven up on his opponent, Stephen Mullan from Greenock Golf Club. He then hit the pin at the short tenth but lost the hole when his ball bounced off the pin into a difficult position and he lost the hole. This merely postponed the inevitable and he recorded a 7 and 6 win.

Meanwhile, Alex was in trouble in his match against David Docherty from Bonnyton Golf Club. David was three up at the turn but Alex fought back and was all square as they played the eighteenth which Alex won for a one up victory.

It appeared that that tough battle had sapped Alex’s energy when Anton birdied the eighth and won the ninth to go two up. There was going to be no second recovery and Anton emerged as Junior Match Play Champion winning 5 and 4.

Freedman Trophy finalists JOHN SCOTT WINS BOYS’ MATCH PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP

The semi finals and final of the Freedman Trophy were played at Kilmacolm Golf Club. In the first semi final, John Scott from East Renfrewshire faced Ranfurly Castle’s Andrew Cunningham. Having been 2 down with 4 to play, John once again did his Lazarus act with birdies at the fifteenth and sixteenth to take the match all the way to the twentieth where a birdie saw him through to the final.
The second semi final was much less dramatic with Lochwinnoch’s Paul Reilly being one over par when he recorded a victory over Stuart Watt (Old Ranfurly) at the sixteenth by 4 and 2.
Both finalists have had a solid start to the season. John made it through to the last eight at the Scottish Boys at Dunbar and finished third in the County Stroke Play competition. He was third at the recent Scottish Boys Area Team Championship scoring 70 over the tough Hayston course.
Paul is the 2011 Renfrewshire Champion of Champions and also represented Renfrewshire at the Boys Area Team Championship.
In the final, John was never behind. He took the lead at the first and, despite Paul's best efforts; he was 4 up after fourteen holes. Paul fought back with a great birdie at the fifteenth but John stuck to his task and recorded a 4 and 2 victory to become champion.

HUGH HUNTER'S CLACKMANNAN COUNTY NEWS

STYLISH SCOTT TAKES MATCH PLAY TITLE

With a display of awesome power from the tee coupled with a deft touch from short range, Braehead’s Scott Moffat won the 2011 County Match Play Championship against fellow Club golfer Ross Benvie over Tillicoultry last week.  Scott won the first two holes, and although Ross cut his lead to one hole by the 5th. Ross’s tee shot to a few inches at the short sixth was neutralised by a long putt and a half in two and from the 7th, Scott quickly won the last two holes on the outward nine putting him 3 up. Consecutive birdies at the 13th and 14th by Scott  were enough for a 5/4 win. Over 20 spectators were treated to a quality golfing display by both players over the tidy layout, with several memorable shots. County President George Kay was highly impressed “ Scott has considerable potential which if developed could make a mark on top level golf”

The semi-finals were both Alloa v Braehead matches, but the Alloa players Ian Guthrie and David Milloy could not make use of home advantage, and both lost narrowly .

RESULTS
 Semi Finals
Scott Moffat bt Ian Guthrie 2 and 1.
Ross Benvie bt David Milloy 2 and 1.
 Final
 Moffat beat Benvie 5/4.

Scott Moffat will now take his place in the 2012 Champion of Champions at Leven.

                            COUNTY SENIOR GOLFERS IN ACTION

In the East of Scotland Seniors at Kinross, it was Tulliallan’s Phil Dempsey who outscored top local senior Bob Stewart. With rounds of 80 and 71, Phil finished in 3rd place; Bob with rounds of 78 and 77 finished in the top ten… well just.  This week these two will be joined by County President George Kay in the Central Scotland seniors at Glenbervie, and at the end of the month, Bob will play at Irvine in the Scottish Seniors Championship—a title he won a few years back.

                              AND JUNIOR GOLFERS AS WELL
In the latest Junior Tour event at Cardrona near Peebles, Alva’s Lawrence Allan finished just above the middle of the field at 14th place with rounds of 78,74,74,76, and finishing ahead of some of the elite boys.
In the Under 16’s draw, Braehead’s Rikky Alexander  is 3rd reserve for the event to be held at Forfar at the beginning of July. Out of the field of 120 no fewer than 53 (just under 50%) play their golf outwith Scotland--- a fact that should cause some concern since that’s 17 more than last year.

                                       PAY DAY FOR CALLUM

With his best performance for some time, Tulliallan’s Callum Macaulay finished in 8th equal position in the Challenge tour event held in France. Callum scored 279 (67,69,68,75) and could have been a bit better as he dropped 4 shots in the last 6 holes. Par 5’s have given him a bit of trouble in the past---no problem this time—the two par fives yielded 1 eagle, 4 birdies, 2 pars and a bogey. His confidence must be increasing and his welcome return to form is in time for the Hydro Challenge coming up soon.

MARK WIEBE SCORES FIRST US SENIORS TOUR WIN SINCE 2008

CONOVER, North Carolina (AP) -- Mark Wiebe parred the third play-off hole following a weather delay and won the Greater Hickory Classic at Rock Barn on Sunday when James Mason missed a four-foot par putt.
Wiebe earned his first Champions Tour title since 2008 in a bizarre finish that included a delay following the first extra hole at Rock Barn. Mason, a Monday qualifier, three-putted from 20 feet to end his chances of earning a one-year playing exemption.
In a tournament played in intense heat that yielded a 54-hole Champions Tour record 1,147 birdies, both players birdied the 18th in regulation to finish at a tournament-best 19 under. That move them past clubhouse leader Fred Funk, who shot 62 and finished in a share of third with Chip Beck.
The 53-year-old Wiebe, who shot a 7-under 65 in regulation, ended a 77-tournament winless streak.
For the 60-year-old Mason, it was heartbreak finish to what was nearly a career-changing week.
Mason, whose last win came in 2002, was playing in his first Champions Tour event of the year. He had lost his playing privileges and was 0 for 5 in qualifiers until he shot 62 on Monday, including an ace, to get into the field.
"A win would have meant everything. It would have been the culmination of my career," said Mason, who shot a 65 on Sunday. "That probably would have given me another year and a half out here. I still get a nice check, but a win would have been a total redo of my career again. But hopefully I'll get one."
Loren Roberts (65) and Nick Price (66) were equal fifth, two shots back. Jeff Sluman (67) finished alone in seventh, three back.
Bob Tway, who led by one shot after the first and second rounds, faded after a double-bogey on the sixth. He shot 71 and fell back to eighth place.
Wiebe and Mason both made nearly identical 15-foot birdie putts on the first playoff hole at No. 18. Immediately after Mason's putt, a storm moved into the area and play was delayed for just over an hour.
For a while, the two golfers sat in their carts near the clubhouse chatting before a break in the weather had the players hustling back to the 18th tee.
Wiebe then missed a birdie putt from 15 feet to send the players back to No. 17.
Wiebe's tee shot on the par-3 landed 40 feet left of the hole. His first putt ran five feet by, but he curled in the par putt. Mason sent his birdie putt past the hole, then missed the next putt for his first bogey of the day.
"I feel for James," Wiebe said. "I'm tickled to have won this tournament, beside myself, so happy. I'm sorry for James that's the way it happened for him. He played great this week."
Funk's 62 ended a wild week which began when he earned a spot in next week's U.S. Open in sectional qualifying. Two days later he injured his left thumb when he hit a railing with his club on the deck during a warmup swing.
He got a cortisone shot Thursday night and said he felt better Sunday. He then took the outright lead with a birdie on 16 and faced the prospect with a birdie-eagle finish of recording the Champions Tour's first 59.
"It did enter my mind," Funk said.
But Funk narrowly left a birdie putt short on 17 and his approach shot to 18 from 65 yards came up well short of the hole. He then missed the long birdie putt and could only watch as Wiebe and Mason moved past him

FRAZAR BEATS KARLSSON IN PLAY-OFF AT ST JUDE CLASSIC

FROM THE GOLF.COM WEBSITE
MEMPHIS, Tennessee (AP) — Harrison Frazar knows he's supposed to act as if he's won before. Turns out it's really tough the first time around, especially for someone who thought he'd missed his chance.
On Sunday Frazar won his first US PGA Tour title in his 355th tournament, beating Robert Karlsson with a par on the third hole of a sudden-death play-off at the St. Jude Classic. He won a month before turning 40 when Karlsson pushed a par-saving putt 3 feet past the hole.
"It was a whirlwind there. This was the first time," Frazar said. "I don't know if I'm supposed to keep the seersucker jacket. I don't know if I'm supposed to carry the trophy. You don't know who you're supposed to talk to. I felt bad. I didn't thank the sponsors. I didn't thank FedEx. I didn't thank the volunteers. I was not quite sure really what was happening right then.
"The only tournament that I won in Q-school, you walked in, signed your card in the scoring trailer, and they gave you a pat on the back, 'Good job.' You walked out the door. There was nobody there."
And Frazar had been so ready to quit golf he had plans lined up for a new job at the end of the year.
He turns 40 on July 29, misses his family back in Texas, and is playing this year on a major medical exemption after separate surgeries on his hip and shoulder last summer. Memphis is just the fourth cut he's made in 10 events, though he just qualified for the upcoming U.S. Open at Congressional.
Now Frazar has the biggest pay cheque pf his career, taking home $1,008,000. He knows he'll be playing at least a couple more years now he has a slot in the Tournament of Champions in Maui in January and in Augusta next April for his first Masters.
"It just shows you how sometimes when you let your guard down or let your expectations soften, you can free yourself up," Frazar said.
Frazar hadn't had a chance to share the news with his wife and three children when he talked with reporters. He said his wife likely was stuck in the Dallas airport, flying to meet him at Congressional.
"I'm assuming her phone is either blown up, or she's trying to get through the airport with three screaming kids," Frazar said.
Frazar missed a chance to win on the 72nd hole when he made his first bogey of the day. He shot a 3-under 67 to match Karlsson (68) at 13 under. He became the seventh first-time winner on tour this year and the first to win his first title in Memphis since Dicky Pride in 1994.
"I just wanted to make it interesting," Frazar joked. "I felt bad for Robert."
Karlsson led after the second and third rounds, and he has shot below par on his past eight rounds here. Now the Swede has lost in a play-off at the TPC Southwind course for a second straight year, though he said he couldn't have done much more in what he called a great match.
"He played great, and I played good as well," Karlsson said. "It's one of those days where I think most of us had a lot of fun out there. I congratulate him on a great win. He played great in the last round after sort of being injured and stuff like that. He played really well."
Camilo Villegas (64) tied for third with Tim Herron, Ryuji Imada, Charles Howell and Retief Goosen. Lee Westwood, the 2010 champion here, tied for 11th.
"It's pretty cool," Frazar said.
This final round turned into a two-man play-off almost from the opening hole with no one closer than three strokes early, a margin that expanded to six.
Frazar kept catching Karlsson atop the leaderboard, finally getting the lead to himself when Karlsson bogeyed No. 17 after yanking a 3-wood way left off the tee. Frazar promptly gave the stroke back on the 72nd hole when his second shot landed near the green and dribbled into the water.
Karlsson stroked in an 8-foot par putt to set up his second straight playoff in Memphis.
In the play-off, Frazar had a 17-footer for birdie and the win on the first hole at No. 18 where he had just bogeyed. But he pushed his putt a foot past. Karlsson had an 18-foot birdie putt for the win on the par-3 11th only to just miss right, while Frazar two-putted from 45 feet.
Frazar had a nice drive on the third hole, the par-4 12th, that left him 93 yards to the pin. He hit his approach to 22 feet and two-putted.
Karlsson had to chip onto the green, and the ball sped past 11 feet past the hole. Needing to hole out to extend the playoff, Karlsson missed his par putt left.
Frazar tied Karlsson at 12 under through three, at 13 under through eight and at 14 under when he stuck his tee shot on the par-3 No. 11 6 feet from the pin for his fourth birdie of the round. With nobody else closer than six strokes, the men matched par for par over the next five holes.
Frazar had birdie putts of 4 feet and 15 feet to take the lead on Nos. 16 and 17 but couldn't knock them in.
Still sharing the lead, Karlsson yanked his tee shot on the par-4 No. 17 way into the rough. His 8-iron came up 42 yards short of the pin, leaving him a 6-footer for par. He started it left of the hole, and it never moved off the line rolling 4 feet past the pin.
Frazar gave it right back on 18, taking his drop and knocking his ball to 2 feet to salvage bogey after Karlsson's par putt from 8 feet.
"Felt more like 12 for me," Karlsson said. "Really, really big 8 feet. I know that's a putt to get into the playoff. So you ... pick your shot and try to hit it there. Scary thing was I had quite a big spike mark right in the way, but you can't clip it. That's the way it is. You take your spot and try to hit it as good as you can, and it went in. It was great."

GREIG HUTCHEON'S BACK-TO-BACK KEMNAY PRO-AM VICTORIES

By DAVID BROWN, Kemnay GC professional
I would like to give Scottishgolfview.com readers some information from Saturday's pro-am which I run.
Firstly, the weather was dreadful all day but this did not affect Greig Hutcheon winning with a score of six-under-par 65, the same as he shot last year. So back-to-back wins for him at the Kemnay pro-am.
Can i also highlight that we managed to raise £5,030 for our chosen charity, Clan. We raised this money through a raffle and a charity auction. This now means we have raised over £10,000 in three years for Clan from the Kemnay pro-am.
Also, we have Paul Lawrie coming to the club on Monday to open our new six- hole course and practice range. This is to boost our junior development through club golf and junior coaching run by myself.
