BIG GUNS FIRING AT ABERDEEN LINKS CHAMPIONSHIP

The big guns put on a fine display of golfing prowess in the second round of the Aberdeen Links championship at the Kings Links tonight.
With the wind not as bad as Monday's opening round and the course softer under foot after heavy overnight rain, there were birdies and eagles galore. The top tie between Bon-Accord's Barrie Edmond and Caley's Adrian Styles set the tone with Edmond delivering six under par figures to run out a 4 and 2 winner.
Barrie will face Maitland Shield partner Neil Mitchell in Friday's quarter final as Neil dispatched Caley's Roy Pirie 3 and 2.
Matthew Greig was four under par in beating Bon-Accord clubmate Ian Welsh 6 and 5. Caley's Barry Reid signed off with a superb eagle 3 on 15 to be five under in defeating Northern's Ally Fiddes.
Two former winners were also under par for their rounds as Caley's Alec Cruickshank and Stewart Finnie recorded 7 and 6 and 5 and 4 victories. Ross Young needed to go to the 19th hole against Northern's Ronnie Evett to prevail and Ronnie's clubmate Stewart Slessor got the better of Caley's Lee Morrice at the 22nd

SCOTLAND BOYS TEAM FOR SIR HENRY COOPER MASTERS NAMED

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE SCOTTISH GOLF UNIONLiberton’s Anthony Blaney and Cawder’s Jamie Savage have both been rewarded for their impressive performances at the Scottish Boys Area Team Championship with selection for the Scotland team to compete in the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters (June 16 to 19).
Blaney, playing the anchor role for Lothians, guided his side to their tenth championship victory in the last weekend’s area team event at Hayston with a fine one-under par 69, while Savage won the Niagara Cup for the best individual performance with an excellent two-under par 68 in difficult scoring conditions.
David Wilson (Troon Welbeck), whose spectacular comeback to win the Scottish Boys Championship final at Dunbar in April caught the eye of the selectors, also earns his opportunity to represent the Scotland Boys team for the first time.
Dumfries and Galloway’s Greig Marchbank, a quarter-finalist in the national match play championship, is also picked for the six-man team, alongside St Andrews youngster Ewan Scott, winner of the opening SGU Junior Tour event of the season at Arbroath earlier this year.
Bradley Neil, the 15-year-old rising star from Blairgowrie and winner of both the Scottish and English Under-14s championships last season, completes the line-up.
One of the highest profile junior golf events in the Europe, the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters was first played for in 1998 and is now a qualifying event for both GB and I boys’ selection and the World Amateur Golf Rankings.
The event is being played over 72-holes for the first time and Teams will compete for the Nations Trophy over the opening two days with the leading 36 individuals and ties qualifying for the final two rounds of stroke play.
This year’s event will be particularly poignant following the death of Sir Henry Cooper, an avid supporter of junior golf, last month at the age of 76. The Junior Masters takes place at Nizels Golf Club near Sevenoaks in Kent.
Scotland Boys Team:
1. Anthony Blaney (Liberton)
2. Greig Marchbank (Dumfries & Galloway)
3. Bradley Neil (Blairgowrie)
4. Jamie Savage (Cawder)
5. Ewan Scott (St Andrews)
6. David Wilson (Troon Welbeck)

The Scotland Boys’ team is sponsored by Aberdeen Asset Management and TaylorMade-adidas Golf.
