TIGER WOODS PULLS OUT OF NEXT WEEK'S UNITED STATES OPEN

FROM THE DAILY TELEGRAPH WEBSITE
By OLIVER BROWN
Tiger Woods’ injury concerns deepened tonight as the problems in his left leg forced him to withdraw from next week’s US Open at Congressional, casting serious doubt over when he could continue his quest to emulate Jack Nicklaus’s 18 major titles.
It marks the first time the tormented former world No 1 has had to miss the US Open since 1994, when he had just graduated from high school. Such has been the upheaval in his personal and professional life over the last three years that the Masters stands as the sole major he has not missed.

“I am extremely disappointed that I won’t be playing in the US Open, but it’s time for me to listen to my doctors and focus on the future,” Woods said. “I was hopeful that I could play, but if I did, I risk further damage to my left leg. My knee and Achilles tendon are not fully healed.”

Woods identified the AT and T National event, beginning on May 30 at Aronomink, Pennsylvania, for his potential return. He added that he hoped to be fit for the season’s two remaining majors, including the Open at Royal St George’s, where he finished fourth in 2003. But he had made a similarly positive statement only last month about the US Open.

“We’re very disappointed that he won’t be playing in the National Open,” said Mike Davis, executive director of the United States Golf Association. “The event is bigger than one player, but he certainly will be missed.”

Woods sank this week to No 15 in the world rankings, his lowest position since the spring of 1997. He announced on Twitter: “Not playing in US Open. Very disappointed. Short-term frustration for long-term gain.”

Such a sanguine attitude masks mounting uncertainty. Woods has been experiencing severe pain from his troublesome left knee ligaments, even though the left Achilles is understood to be causing him the greater concern. It is doubtful the left knee would benefit from further surgery. The most recent of four operations was performed in the week after the 2008 US Open at Torrey Pines.

EDMOND BROTHERS' MIXED LUCK IN ABERDEEN LINKS

While holder and leading qualifier Barrie was easing to a 4 and 3 victory over Bon-Accord clubmate Willie Smith, it was his brother Matthew who was giving a former champion problems.
Two up after six holes against Caley stalwart Alex Cruickshank, Matthew arrived on the 14th tee still one to the good. Alex, however, drew on all his experience to fire three birdies in a row to be one up on the 17th tee and a par 4 was good enough to see him progress to Wednesdays second round. Elsewhere there were wins for former champions Adrian Styles (Caledonian), Ronnie Evett (Northern), Stewart Finnie (Caledonian) and Gordon Grimmer (Caledonian)
