DICK TOP SCOT BEHIND WINNER WRIGHT AT WELSH OPEN STROKE

Darren Wright (Rowlands Castle), who played in the recent Walker Cup practice match at Royal Aberdeen, boosted his selection prospects for the September match against the Americans at Balgownie by winning the prestigious Welsh men's open amateur stroke play championship over 72 holes in rough weather at St Pierre, Chepstow.
Two men who did not play in the Walker Cup work-out, Ben Stow (Rushmere) and Ben Loughlrey (Wrag Barn), finished second and third.

Walker Cup captain Nigel Edwards. who played in four consecutive Walker Cup matches earlier this decade, tied for14th place on 302.
Top Scot was Kingsknowe's Allyn Dick who had a roller-coaster last round of 74 - including a hole

MICHAEL HOEY WINS MADEIRA ISLANDS OPEN

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Michael Hoey claimed his second European Tour/Challenge Tour title with a two-shot victory at the Madeira Islands Open today.
The 32 year old, whose previous win also came on Portuguese soil two years ago, fired a closing 71 to finish on ten-under-par278  for the week at the stunning Seve Ballesteros-designed Porto Santo Golfe.
The Northern Irishman started the day level with England's Jamie Elson, but used his experience to par the first seven holes before a first birdie of the day at the eighth.
Hoey finally dropped a shot at the 13th, but with Chris Gane closing in he kept his cool and a birdie at the next re-established his advantage.
Elson (73) and Gane (71) finished tied for second on eight under, while the home fans had reason to be delighted as two Portuguese players finished in the top ten.
José-Filipe Lima finished tied fourth with Lloyd Saltman and Federico Colombo after a four under par 68, while Ricardo Santos was tied tenth after a closing 73.
Earlier in the day Simon Wakefield broke the Porto Santo Golfe course record with a magnificent 63.
The Englishman briefly threatened the first 59 in European Tour history - but needing to pick up two shots in his last two holes he parred the 17th and double bogeyed the par five last.
"I've been threatening to play well for the last few weeks, then yesterday on the range I just found something I felt comfortable with, I had another good session on the range this morning, and took it out onto the course with me," said Wakefield.

POULTER BEATS DONALD IN FINAL TO DENY LUKE WORLD NO 1 RANK

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Ian Poulter denied Luke Donald the World Number One ranking as he beat him in the final of the Volvo World Match Play Championship in an all-English final in Spain this afternoon.
Donald was trying for an unprecedented match play double after taking the WGC-Accenture title in Arizona in February, but Poulter triumphed 2 and 1 at Finca Cortesin.
So Donald stays second behind Lee Westwood and Poulter celebrated his son Luke's seventh birthday in exactly the way he hoped - although not the moment when he fell down a bank trying to thrash his way out of a bush.
"Happy birthday, Luke," he said. "I thought it would be pretty special to win this today.
"I finally started holing some putts. I've been frustrated for a few months and you have to hole putts to win."
Donald commented: "It was disappointing - I ran out of steam a bit and didn't take the opportunities I had."
In the first all-English final since the event began at Wentworth in 1964, Poulter, last year's Tucson champion, was behind three times before levelling again with a 40 footer on the short 12th and then going ahead two holes later.
Helped by Donald three-putting the next, missing a three footer that would have taken the hole, Poulter went two up with an approach to two feet on the 464 yard 16th and a half on the next was good enough - although he had to make a seven footer for it.
It earned him €800,000, while Donald's compensation was a cheque for €420,000.
Now, though, he must try again to take the number one spot off Lee Westwood at Wentworth Club this coming week.
It was not only Donald who began the day with a chance to be number one. So did Kaymer, but in a repeat of the final in Tucson he came off a clear second best again in their semi-final.
In fact, he did not even take him as far. Their first clash ended 3 and 2 and this time Donald cruised through 5 and 3, never trailing from the moment Kaymer bogeyed the second.
By the time the German double-bogeyed the short tenth, finding sand and then going off the other side of the green, he was four down and he conceded after going in another bunker at the 15th.
"He played like a machine a little bit," stated Kaymer. "It was unbelievable - he hits the fairways, all the greens and he makes the putts.
"It was like a PlayStation. I thought there's maybe a little bit of a chance, but I just didn't see it.
"Luke never really opens the door for you and it felt a little bit impossible. He really deserves to become the number one."
The other match was heading the way of Colsaerts until he reached the same hole, but three-putting there and driving into the bushes on the 16th allowed Poulter to draw level.
The Brussels golfer, 108th in the world after winning his first European Tour title in China last month, holed from ten feet for a two on the next, but Poulter followed him in from nine.
Then at the last, with Colsaerts on in two, Poulter pitched to five feet, halved in birdie 4s and went through when his opponent fluffed a chip at the first extra hole and took a bogey 6.
"I just kind of hung in there and you just need a bit of momentum," said Poulter, who went to the final green in every one of his five matches en route to the final - including, of course, against Westwood at the last eight stage.
"I think experience was crucial. Nicolas had the upper hand with length (he was The European Tour's biggest hitter last season) and I just had to trust my short game.
"Being constantly out-driven by 30 yards or more was not something he had to worry about against Donald, but he commented: "He's in incredible form and he's a great player, so I'm going to have to play well."
It did not prove to be the case when they got under way, though. After going ahead with a par on the second Donald bogeyed the fourth and fifth, but then came back with a 25 footer at the sixth.
Back and forth it went after that, with Poulter's tumble on the eighth even leaving him without his lucky ball-marker until it was retrieved by a referee.
He levelled at the next and again with a 40 footer at the short 12th after bogeying the 226 yard tenth, then went ahead for the second time thanks to a pitch to three feet on the 14th.
Donald missed from three feet for a three-putt bogey and only a half on the next.

SUNDAY RESULTS
SEMI-FINALS
Luke Donald (England) bt Martin Kaymer (Germany) 5 and 3.
Ian Poulter (England) bt Nicolas Colsaerts (Belgium) at 19th.
FINAL
Poulter bt Donald 2 and 1.

DONALD v POULTER IN FINAL OF WORLD MATCH-PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
England's Luke Donald and Ian Poulter, the last two winners of the WGC-Accenture Match Play in Arizona, won through to face each other in the final of the Volvo World Match Play Champoionship in Spain.
Donald, who needs to take the title to become World Number One for the first time, repeated his victory over German Martin Kaymer in February's final at Dove Mountain - with an even bigger 5 and 3 margin this time.
In the other semi-final Poulter was two down with four to play, but Belgian Nicolas Colsaerts bogeyed the 15th and 16th and lost when he ran up a bogey six on the first extra hole.
Donald won three holes in a row from the second and, after running up a double bogey seven on the next, birdied the long eighth and then took the 226 yard tenth when Kaymer double bogeyed.
The next four were shared and Donald did not even have to putt at the 15th after his opponent found a greenside bunker.
Colsaerts chipped in at the second and went three up after seven, but then made a mess of the eighth and Poulter, conqueror of Westwood in the last 16, halved the next five.
Colsaerts remained two up with four to play, but three-putted the 15th and then had to take a penalty drop after a wild drive down the next. Poulter won it with a par four and was all square.
Colsaerts birdied the last two holes, but Poulter matched them with putts of nine and five feet to take the game into sudden death.
Poulter won at the first extra hole after Colsaerts, much the longer off the tee again, missed the green this time, fluffed a chip and ran up a bogey six.
Poulter bogeyed the second when the final began, but was back on terms after Donald's drive at the 334 yard fourth finished on the rocks by the green and he took a penalty drop.
Donald also bogeyed the long fifth - at least it was better than his seven there in the morning - but that put Poulter one up.Not for long, though. The World Number Two sank a 25 footer at the next to bring them back level.
Poulter was behind for the third time when he bogeyed the 10th, but a 40-footer two holes later and a pitch to three feet at the 14th took him in front for the second time - and now with only four to play.

Having covered the outward half in 33 in the morning, Fotheringham struggled in the afternoon rain and took 39 (five over par) to reach the turn. That opened the door to his challengers but he recovered with birdies at the 11th, 15th and 17th, and could afford to finish with a bogey for a 72.
The Under-21 youths' title was won by Rodger Clarke (Moray) with scores of 77 and 69 for 146, the same total as Scottish youths champion Lyle McAlpine (Royal Dornoch).
