AYRSHIRE MATCH-PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP AT TROON PORTLAND

The Ayrshire match-play championship began over the Troon Portland course this evening. Three times former title-winner Alex Gourlay (Irvine) claimed a place in the quarter-finals with a 2 and 1 win over Jamie Mackay (Kilmarnock Barassie), the new Ayrshire stroke-play champion.
In the round of the last eight Gourlay will face 2007 title winner Stephen Murray (Troon Welbeck) who defeated Euan Walker (Kilmarnock Barassie) by 3 and 2.
Defending champion Euan Brown (Kilmarnock Barassie) beat Tommy McInally (Loudoun), a former county stroke-play winner, by 5 and 4.
In the quarter finals Brown will play 2001 stroke-play champion Gary Bryden (Girvan) after the Turnberry greenkeeper beat 2009 semi finalist Stephen Spence (Irvine) at the 19th.
Michael Smyth (Royal Troon) used local knowledge to good effect with a comfortable 6 and 5 win over Colin Gray (Irvine) and now faces a tie against Ayrshire Order Of Merit winner Keith Hamilton (Ayr Belleisle).
Hamilton beat Malcolm Pennycott (Whiting Bay) 3 and 1.
Marc Smith (Troon Welbeck) was a late replacement in the championship as first reserve, and he took full advantage of his opportunity, beating John Haggarty (Loudoun) by 4 and 2.
In the quarter-finals Smith will play clubmate and new Scottish boys champion David Wilson (Troon Welbeck), who had to go to the 19th to take the measure of David McLellan (Largs).
The quarter final matches take place on Tuesday evening, again at Troon Portland, with the semi finals on Wednesday and the final match on Thursday.

TUESDAY TIES
17.00 - ALEX GOURLAY (Irvine) v STEPHEN MURRAY (Troon Welbeck)
17.10 - EUAN BROWN (Kilmarnock Barassie) v GARY BRYDEN (Girvan)
17.20 - MICHAEL SMYTH (Royal Troon) v KEITH HAMILTON (Ayr Belleisle)

OOSTHUIZEN, SCHWARTZEL BOUND FOR CASTLE STUART

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
The Barclays Scottish Open will play host to Major Champions Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel at Castle Stuart Golf Links in Inverness from July 7-10, the week before Oosthuizen defends his Open Championship title at Royal St George's, Kent.
The South African pair, who have been friends since their days playing junior golf together, joined golf’s most exclusive club of Major winners in the last nine months following Oosthuizen’s crushing victory in The Open at St Andrews last summer and, of course, Schwartzel’s unforgettable Masters triumph at Augusta three weeks ago.
They will join current US Open Champion and 2008 Barclays Scottish Open winner Graeme McDowell, Padraig Harrington, Phil Mickelson and defending champion Edoardo Molinari at Castle Stuart in July, with more of the world’s elite players expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
For Oosthuizen, the move from Loch Lomond Golf Club to the links of Castle Stuart will provide the perfect setting in which to prepare for his defence of The Open at Royal St George’s the following week, and the 28 year old would like nothing more than to head south with the Barclays Scottish Open trophy next to the Claret Jug in his suitcase.
“The fact that the Barclays Scottish Open is being played over a links course this year is really good news for me,” confirmed Oosthuizen. “Playing on a links course will help me better prepare to defend The Open as I will be able to work on a lot of the shots I’ll require to do well at Royal St George’s.
“Obviously the perfect preparation would be to win at Castle Stuart – whoever wins the Barclays Scottish Open this year will have to be considered a big favourite for The Open because their links game will be in great shape.”
Schwartzel, meanwhile, will arrive on the Moray Firth – one of Scotland’s most beautiful locations – with the swagger of a man who has beaten the world’s best following his stunning Masters success.
The 26 year old – the third South African after Gary Player and Trevor Immelman to own a Green Jacket – produced one of the great Augusta finishes by becoming the first player to birdie the last four holes in the final round and win the Masters, a fact he is slowly but surely coming to terms with.
“The last two weeks have been a real rollercoaster for me and I am starting to understand what it means to be a Major Champion,” said Schwartzel. “It will be a real honour to be introduced onto the first tee at the Barclays Scottish Open as the Masters Champion and I hope I can perform at my best and try to contend for the title.
“The Barclays Scottish Open has always been a big week on Tour because it is the week before The Open and it now has an extra edge because it’s being played on a links course at Castle Stuart.”
All four days of the Barclays Scottish Open will be broadcast live on both BBC Television (July 9 and 10) and Sky Sports (July 7 and 8) with extensive highlights on both channels.
Advance tickets are now on sale for the 2011 Barclays Scottish Open – for full details of ticket offers and other events on The European Tour, please visit www.europeantourtickets.com or telephone the Ticket Hotline: +44 (0) 800 023 2557; fax +44 141 887 0223. PAUL REILLY IS RENFREWSHIRE BOYS' CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY RENFREWSHIRE GOLF UNION
Don Bremner: e-mail- donbremner@ranfurly9.freeserve.co.uk
The final of the 2011 Renfrewshire Golf Union Boys’ Champion of Champions took place at Paisley Golf Club between Alasdair McDougall (Elderslie Golf Club), on left in picture, and Paul Reilly (Lochwinnoch Golf Club), on right.
Alasdair had faced Gourock’s David Slack in the semi-final and won 2 and 1. Paul’s semi-final opponent was Josh Bogle of Ranfurly Castle and that contest ended with Paul 2 up.
In a keenly-contested match played in tricky windy conditions Paul defeated Alasdair by 3 and 1. Alasdair opened brightly and was two up after three holes. However a mixture of mistakes by Alasdair and birdies by Paul saw Paul one up on the ninth tee. The hole was birdied by Alasdair and the game was all square at the turn.
The 13th and 14th holes were to prove decisive as Paul’s par and birdie put him two up with four to play. The 15th was halved in par and both players had fine birdies on the 16th. Alasdair could not fight back and the game ended on the 17th green.
The game was played in great spirit with Paul being one under par for the round. Both boys are a credit to Renfrewshire Golf and we shall certainly hear more of both of them in the future.

STEPHEN SIMANTS IS LOTHIANS CHAMPIONSHIP LEADING QUALIFIER

FROM THE LOTHIANS GOLF ASSOCIATION WEBSITE
Stephen Simants, a semi-finalist at Craigielaw two years ago, led the qualifiers for this year's Lothians Championship at Broomieknowe.
The 25-year-old claimed the Stuart Cup as he finished two shots clear of the field after rounds of 68 and 70 at Craigmillar Park and Lothianburn respectively.
It was a sweet success for Simants, who was pipped for the same prize on a countback by Silverknowes star Graham Robertson at Castle Park and Royal Musselburgh 12 months ago.
Simants, who lost to eventual winner Keith Nicholson in the last four in 2009, was delighted to finish top of the pile on a testing day at both courses for the qualifying.
"I was solid rather than spectacular but managed to holes a few putts in both rounds," he said of a two-shot triumph over Craigielaw's Ross Noon.
"To be honest, I hadn't made a great start to the season and was struggling with my putter in particular.
"But I've been working hard on my game over the past few weeks and, thankfully, it has come to fruition.
"It is nice to have won the Stuart Cup after being pipped for that last year and my confidence is certainly high for my bid to do the double in the match-play phase."
Noon, the son of former pro Jim, who now caddies for Sam Torrance, shot rounds of 69 and 71 - the better of the two coming at Lothianburn - as he finished a shot ahead of third-placed Stephen Smith (Dalmahoy).
Three players tied for fourth on 144, including four-time champion Nicholson, whose afternoon 69 at Lothianburn included a triple-bogey 7 at the last, and the aforementioned Robertson, last year's Lothians Order of Merit winner.
Craigmillar Park's Richard Gill, the other player on 144, was unavailable for the match-play phase along with Alan Crawford of Deer Park.
Alongside Carrickvale's Simon Hermiston on 145 were Craig Galloway (Harburn), Jamie McIntosh (Broomieknowe), Willem Kerr (Craigielaw), Alan Anderson (Bruntsfield Links) and Malcolm Campbell (Swanston New).
Galloway's morning 67 at Craigmillar Park was the best effort at either course and contained six birdies and a back nine of 30.
McIntosh, who had earlier missed a "tiddler" at the last in his 68 on the same course, admitted the chance of a tilt at the title this week on home soil had "definitely given me an extra incentive to qualify".
Duddingston's four-time winner Stuart Smith, who eagled the 14th at Craigmillar Park, qualified comfortably on 146, as did 2000 champion and current Lothians captain Mark Timmins.
Alongside the Pumpherston player on 147 was West Linton's Scott Walker, who lost to Smith in the final in 1995 - the last time Broomieknowe stayed the match-play stage.
Other qualifiers included former Lothians Champion of Champions winners Brian Erskine (Merchants) and Graham Davidson (Winterfield) as well as rising Royal Burgess star Varun Varadharajan.
Playing in the event for the first time, the 19-year-old Heriot Watt student sealed his spot with two 74s, finishing at Lothianburn with three birdies in the last four holes.
"The success enjoyed by the Royal Burgess team over the last few years has been a real inspiration to me and it's great that I am now starting to creep into that side," said the four-handicapper.
Dunbar's Stephen Neilson, a Scottish Amateur semi-finalist last summer, headed a long list of surprising non-qualifiers.
They also included Gary Corrigan and Keith Reilly, the latter not being able to recover from the 11 he ran up at his first hole of the day at Lothianburn.
Former winners Kevin Hastings, David Warner and Steven Armstrong missed out as well after second-round NRs, as did 2009 runner-up Kevin Messer.

HUGH HUNTER'S CLACKMANNAN COUNTY NEWS

GOLFING SUCCESS FOR BOB…..EVEN MORE FOR LAWRENCE!
While golfing success eluded the Clackmannan county team recently in the Provan Salver, the disappointment was more than made up by the top County Senior and Junior golfers.
First up was Tulliallan’s Bob Stewart who took the South of Scotland Seniors title at Powfoot at the weekend, thus continuing his run of good scores in Midland Alliance events.
His two round aggregate of 145 (74, 71) led a trio of players two shots back… while his scores in each round were bettered by others, it was only Bob that showed the consistency in both rounds, and the result is a clear indication that Bob intends to press for a return to International recognition in 2011.
Alva’s Lawrence Allan went even better in the 72 hole Fairhaven Trophy event as part of a 12 strong Scottish squad competing there. Over the first 36 holes, Scotland won the Nations cup, and Lawrence was one of the three nominated players in the Scottish team. ----pleasing to note they beat the English team by one shot. Only 5 Scots made the 36 hole cut and it was Lawrence who finished top Scot at the end of the tournament with a 12th equal finish on 312 (78,77,74,83) in difficult windy conditions.
His finish was ahead of some experienced Scottish players and (like Bob), a few more performances along the same lines must give him a chance for Scottish selection.
Lawrence will have another chance this weekend when he competes in the 72 hole Scottish Youths Championship to be held at Paisley.

BUSY TIME FOR COUNTY GOLFERS

It’s a busy two weeks on the county golfing scene with the Boys Match play events ( Tulliallan, Braehead, Dollar) and the County Club Foursomes Championship being held at Dollar It will give the County players a chance to sharpen their games for the National events later--- the Scottish Area Team Championship and the Boys Area Team Championship.
Tillicoultry hosts its Open events this weekend with the scratch to 12 Division being held on Saturday and the 13-28 Division on Sunday. Hopefully Tillicoultry will take late entries---the smaller County Golf Clubs always welcome a boost in numbers----so if anyone is interested then maybe just contact the golf club.
