WESTWOOD SAYS CONSISTENCY HAS MADE HIM No 1 AGAIN

FROM THE DAILY TELEGRAPH WEBSITE
Lee Westwood insists he is worthy of the world No 1 spot and said he was sick of being asked about failing to win a Major, after some experts queried his right to the top ranking.
The Englishman moved back to pro golf's No 1 spot by winning the Indonesian Masters on Sunday, although he had to rely on countryman Luke Donald's stumble at the US PGA Heritage Tournament.
Westwood has been one of the game's more consistent performers in recent years but a Major title – the professional golfer's holy grail – has so far eluded him.
Some American columnists – along with England's six-time Major-winner and ex-world number one Nick Faldo – have queried the ranking system as Westwood and Donald, neither of whom have won a Major, vie for the top slot.
But Westwood, who is in the field for this week's $3.2 million Ballantine's Championship at Blackstone Golf Club near Seoul, said he was tired of justifying his position.
"The only thing that gets to me about answering that question is the amount of times I have to answer it, it gets on my nerves," Westwood said.
"This might be the very last time I answer this question – it could become 'no comment' after this. The world rankings and the Major championships are two completely separate things.
"I've had a lot of chances to win Majors recently and it just hasn't happened. The world rankings are about consistency and playing well week-in, week-out, which I tend to do." However, Westwood also said the venues for this year's remaining Majors – the US Open at Congressional Country Club, Maryland, the Open at Royal St George's and the US PGA at Atlanta Athletic Club, Georgia – would suit him.
"I'm particularly good tee-to-green and at Major championships you tend to have a big advantage if you hit a lot of greens," he said.
The 38-year-old was number one for 17 weeks before losing top spot to Germany's Martin Kaymer in February after what was, by his own admission, a poor run of form.
"It was nice to get back to number one but to be honest I hadn't played the first part of the year like the world number one and the world rankings are reflective of how you played," he said.
Westwood admitted the added demands put on him as No 1 had left him struggling to balance his schedule.
"Obviously with being world number one there's a lot more responsibility, so you have a lot more things to do, more media commitments," he said.
"People want a lot more of your time so it becomes sometimes a bit difficult to cram everything in and leave time for practising golf – what got you where you are. That's the toughest part."
Westwood now heads a world top 10 that features six Europeans including five from Britain and Northern Ireland, and he said the current standard of golf meant there was little room for error.
"There are a lot of very good players in the world, so you can't afford to have any weaknesses," he said. "The secret to being world number one is consistency – all parts of your game have to be good."
Since Tiger Woods' epic 281-week reign as number one came to an end after a lurid sex scandal last year, golf fans have been gripped by the fierce tussle for the rankings crown.
While Westwood and Kaymer have traded the top slot, Phil Mickelson, Graeme McDowell and Donald have all been within striking distance, while a winless Woods has slipped back to sixth as he struggles for consistency.

MASTERS TOOK ITS TOLL ON TIGER - HE IS OUT FOR A FEW WEEKS

FROM THE DAILY TELEGRAPH WEBSITE
Tiger Woods will be out of action for ''a few weeks'' after medical tests revealed he suffered a double injury setback during the Masters earlier this month.
The American sprained the medial collateral ligament in his left knee and also strained his left Achilles while playing a difficult stroke on the 17th hole of his third round at Augusta National.
Woods was able to complete the first major championship of the season - eventually finishing in a tie for fourth place, four strokes behind winner Charl Schwartzel - but subsequently elected to seek a medical evaluation.
A statement on his personal website read: ''Doctors have advised rest and cold-water therapy, and soft tissue treatment will also occur later this week.
''There is no definitive time frame for healing, but Woods hopes to be back in a few weeks.''
Woods was next due in action at the Wells Fargo Championship at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte from May 5-8 but has confirmed he will now miss the tournament.

NORTH-EAST MAKE TWO CHANGES FOR SCOTTISH TITLE DEFENCE

Adam Dunton (McDonald Ellon), named in North-east team for title defence at Prestwick (image by Cal Carson Golf Agency).

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Title-holders North-east have made two changes in last year's winning line-up for the defence of the Moneygate Scottish men's area team championship at Prestwick and Prestwick St Nicholas on May 14 and 15.
The team, captained by Paul Gallacher, is:

ADAM DUNTON (McDonald Ellon)
JORDAN FINDLAY (Fraserburgh)
SCOTT LARKIN (Royal Aberdeen)
DAVID LAW (Hazlehead)
PHILIP McLEAN (Peterhead)
KRIS NICOL (Fraserburgh)

Dunton and Findlay replace Anthony Bews, runner-up to Jordan Findlay in the Scottish Alliance championship last October, and former Scotland cap Bryan Innes, both Murcar Links Golf Club members.
After the North-east success at Kinross last May, Findlay, pictured by Cal Carson Golf Agency, recaptured the form that saw him reach two British boys' championship finals, winning in 2004 and losing in 2005, by reaching the final of the Scottish amateur championship at Gullane and later winning the Scottish Alliance championship at Murcar Links in the autumn.
Dunton has moved into the front rank of North-east amateur golf over the past couple of years and is one of the leading players on the North-east Alliance winter circuit.
Team captain Paul Gallacher explained:
"The North-east selection committee had a very difficult choice to make as we have a number of very good players in the district at the minute, a nice problem to have but still a difficult decision to make.
"As the area team championship comes at a very early point in the year it is difficult to get a clear view of players in form so we have two or three squad sessions in the winter, the last of which was at Royal Aberdeen on April 14.
"We then take into account results from the competitions up to and including the district's 36-hole Phillips Trophy. The other factor, which admittedly doesn’t help Brian Innes or Anthony Bews is that the six guys picked are full time golfers which gives them a fair bit of an advantage when it comes to showing consistency this early in the season.
"So, to sum up, Jordan Findlay has been picked because he’s a member of the Scottish Elite squad and shown  excellent form both throughout the winter and since coming back from South Africa and Adam has had a good string of results-  a top 20 finish at Craigmillar Park Open, beaten for first place on a countback at the Phillips Tropy at the weekend, had a good showing at the squad sessions and he is someone we’ve had our eye on for a while."

In last year's Scottish area team championship, the first to be played under a new format of 36-holes' stroke-play from which the top four teams qualify for the match-play stages, North-east beat Renfrewshire 4 1/2-1/2 in the final and Lothians beat Ayrshire 4 1/2-1/2 in the play-off for third place.

GREIG STEWART WINS P AND K BOYS' MATCH-PLAY TITLE

Left to right: Greig Stewart, match referee Gordon Arthur, Bradley Neil.

Greig Stewart (Crieff) is the Perth and Kinross county boys' match-play champion for 2011. He beat Bradley Neil (Blairgowrie) by 3 and 2 in Sunday's final at Crieff Golf Club.
Bradley won the first with a solid par after Greig failed to get up and down from the greenside bunker. Second was halved in 4s but a stone dead pitch from below the green at the third levelled the match when Bradley could not follow from a similar position.
The fourth was halved and then Bradley, unfortunate to roll into the fairway bunker at the fifth, could not match Greig's birdie 4.
Greig went further ahead at the seventh with a chip and single putt 4, after a poor approach shot. Bradley, also being short in two, was unable to get up and down, so falling two down. Greg turned three up after a birdie 4 at the ninth, again secured with an excellent chip and single putt on this long par 5.
Holes 10, 11 and 12 were all halved, the latter with two excellent par 4s, both just missing from around 10 feet with their birdie putts.
Bradley won the 13th with a solid tee shot and two putts to reduce his arrears to two holes.
However, at the 14th, Bradley three-putted from above the hole and this put Greig three up with four to play.
Bradley bravely halved the 15th with a good second putt but Greig closed it out at the next hole with another excellent, stone-dead pitch from below the green, to secure his 4, Brad missed his birdie putt for the win which would have kept it alive.
