COOK AND SANDELAR RETIRE FROM LEGENDS BETTER-BALL

FROM THE GOLF.COM WEBSITE
SAVANNAH, Georgia (AP) — The team of John Cook and Joey Sindelar withdrew today from the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf better-ball pairs tournament because Sindelar has a bad back.
Sindelar, who injured his back last week in a Champions Tour event in Tampa, felt well enough to start the 54-hole event with his old Ohio State teammate on Friday.
However, he felt pain again and came off the Savannah Harbor course after four holes.
Cook played the last 14 holes alone and had the team just three strokes off the lead with a 7-under 65. After the round, Sindelar indicated he might be able to play again, perhaps on Sunday. But he changed his mind early Saturday.
Cook said he would have played on as a single for Saturday's round, but didn't feel it was fair to finish the tournament that way.

COLSAERTS LEADS VOLVO CHINA OPEN INTO FINAL ROUND

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Nicolas Colsaerts will take a one shot lead into the final round of the Volvo China Open as the Belgian seeks a first European Tour title at Luxehills International Country Club.
The big-hitting 28 year old produced a third round 66 to reach 18 under par in Chengdu, one stroke clear of Han Cheng-won.

Colsaerts was the second youngest player ever to come through The European Tour Qualifying School when he graduated on his 18th birthday in 2000, but he struggled to establish himself at the top level until last year – when he managed five top-ten finishes and finished 67th on The Race to Dubai.

He was also the longest hitter on Tour in 2010, out-driving the likes of Alvaro Quiros, and his power was on display in Chengdu as he played the four par fives in five under par courtesy of an eagle at the first and three birdies.

“An eagle on the first was the best start I could have hoped for,” said the World Number 175. “I’m not sure if I’m the only one but I hit driver over the river and tried to give myself the shortest line in.

“I holed from 25 feet and it was the best start. On 18 I probably hit the best drive of the day - it was a bit down and went off to the left.

“I hit it good and my caddy said it went 380 yards. That was a bonus because it is a bit of a daunting second shot to go over the water, it is difficult, especially when you get towards the end of the day.
“I hit a seven iron onto the green and two putted so I’m quite happy to finish like that and make four.
“The wind changed the course dramatically today. You had to think more about certain tee shots.
“The other days you could pretty much go at every pin and the ball would stop where it landed. With these greens you always want to be on the right side but it was harder with it being dry.
“I’ve been looking for a win for a couple of years but I’ve put myself in contention a few times and I know if I don’t win here it will come one day. I was a bit itchy today and managed alright. I hope tomorrow I’ll manage the same.”
Han led after day one when he opened with a 64 but a second round 70 had dropped him out of the top ten.
The former Asian Amateur Champion was in top form once again though as he birdied five of his first seven holes en route to a best-of-the-day 65.
The 19 year old, playing only his second event as a professional, was delighted with his efforts.
“I played perfectly today – some good shots and good putts,” he said.

“I took confidence from my putting today. When I missed shots I made the putts, that helped my round.

“This is the best I have played as a professional. I have some experience of big tournaments from when I was an amateur and that experience is helping me now. I’m not nervous - I believe in myself.”

Ireland's Peter Lawrie and France’s Grégory Havret, who unlike the leading pair have both won on The European Tour, are tied for third after both carded 68s to advance to 16 under.

Overnight leader Jamie Donaldson failed to capitalise on his sparkling 61 as the Welshman slipped to fifth with a 70, but 22 players are within six shots of lead on what promises to be an exciting final day.

LEE WESTWOOD GOES FIVE CLEAR IN INDONESIAN MASTERS

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY ASIAN TOURJakarta , April 23: Lee Westwood dashed towards the finishing line of the US$750,000 Indonesian Masters, shooting a brilliant six-under-par 66 in the third round on Saturday.
Despite bogeying the last hole, the Englishman still held a distant five-shot lead on 16-under-par 200 to put himself in prime position of celebrating his 38th birthday with a victory at the Royale Jakarta Golf Club.
Westwood was the world number one for 17 weeks before being replaced by Martin Kaymer in February and is in the running of regaining the top spot if he wins this week and Luke Donald does not in the United States .
Asian Tour rookie Park Hyun-bin of Korea , who has only one bogey (second round) in his campaign so far, fired a 70 to share second place with Thitiphun Chuayprakong of Thailand on a 205 total in the inaugural event.
Thailand ’s Prayad Marksaeng fired a 69, courtesy of an eagle three on the 12th hole to lie in fourth place while Bangladeshi Siddikur, Filipino Antonio Lascuna and Thai duo Prom Meesawat and Thongchai Jaidee are a stroke back.
Westwood, who returned Saturday morning to complete two holes of the second round, said reverting to the conventional putter from the belly putter worked wonders for him as he shot two hat-tricks of birdies from holes one and nine.
“It feels much better using the conventional putter because every decent putt seems to go in and that made me more comfortable. I’ve been in this position before and I’ll try not to get ahead of myself,” said the Englishman, who has won over 30 titles in his stellar career.
Westwood said he was focused on winning the Indonesian Masters. “I’m here to win a tournament. World rankings seem to take care of themselves,” added Westwood, Europe ’s number one in 2000 and 2009.
Little known Thitiphun, who won an event in China last week, admitted to feeling nervous but regained confidence when he sank a huge 18 feet birdie putt on the second hole.
“I kept to my game plan of not being too greedy. You can’t get birdies all the time. My putting has been excellent this week and that has been pulling my game up,” said the 18-year-old.
The ever smiling Thai, who earned his Asian Tour card at Qualifying School in Thailand earlier this year, was relishing the opportunity of playing with Westwood in the final round.
“You won’t get much opportunities of playing with one of the world’s best golfer. I’m really looking forward to it. It won’t be easy to win though because I think I’ll be very nervous,” added the Thai.
Park saved numerous pars in a round of two birdies and was delighted with his putting and accurate iron play.
“My putting has been very solid. I managed to save many pars. I wished I could make more birdies but overall, I’m happy with what I shot,” said the 24-year-old.

KITE-MORGAN, SCHULZ-HALLBERG SHARE US SENIORS' LEAD

FROM THE GOLF.COM WEBSITE
SAVANNAH, Georgia. (AP) — Tom Kite and Gil Morgan shot a 10-under 62 in better-ball play Friday for a share of the first-round lead with Ted Schulz and Gary Hallberg in the Champions Tour's Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf.
Kite and Morgan birdied their first five holes, while Schulz and Hallberg shot a 30 on the back nine at The Club at Savannah Harbor, an island layout in the Savannah River.
The teams of Scott Hoch and Kenny Perry, Hal Sutton and Larry Mize, David Frost and Michael Allen, and Sandy Lyle and Peter Senior opened with 63s.
Kite credited Morgan's putting.
"Doc putted brilliantly today," Kite said. "I had a few balls inside his, but he made those putts and we didn't need mine."
None was bigger perhaps than Morgan's 30-footer to save par on No. 18, after he drove into tall marsh grass and needed two shots to get out and on the green.
"I think we only made one mistake," Morgan said. "We didn't birdie the (par-5) 11th like we probably should have."
They did, however, birdie the first five holes.
"That was probably the key," Kite said. "In the past, we've been slow starters."
Putting was key for Schulz and Hallberg, too.
Hallberg rolled in an 80-footer for birdie at the par-3 17th.
"We hung in there," Hallberg said. "I was a little off, early, but I found my rhythm and I putted well."
Hoch eagled the par-4 10th from 87 yards with a sand wedge.
"Kenny's ball was only an inch from the cup, and I told my caddie I was going to try to get inside him," Hoch said. "It rolled right past his ball, never touched it, and went in."
Defending champions Mark O'Meara and Nick Price had a 64. Tom Lehman, a two-time winner this year, teamed with Corey Pavin to also shot a 64. John Cook, coming off his second victory of the year last week at TPC Tampa Bay, and Joey Sindelar had a 65.
Cook played the final 14 holes alone after Sindelar hurt his back. Sindelar said he might try to rejoin Cook, probably in the final round Sunday.
Sindelar said he felt pain in his lower back on his second shot on the first hole. Sindelar played through the fourth hole, which he birdied, then walked off for treatment while Cook played on alone.
"I told him I'd try to hold the fort down," Cook said. "I told Joey not to jeopardize the rest of the year just to play with me today."
The team of Ben Crenshaw and Curtis Strange shot a 63 to take a one-stroke lead over three teams in the Raphael Division, a 36-hole event for generally older players who eschew the 54-hole Legends Division. Raphael play concludes Saturday.

LEE WESTWOOD LEADS AFTER ROUND 2 OF INDONESIAN MASTERS

FROM THE GOLF.COM WEBSITE
JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Lee Westwood birdied the final hole for a 6-under 66 and a one-stroke lead Saturday after the completion of the suspended second round of the Indonesian Masters.
The second-ranked Westwood had two holes left when the round was suspended Friday because of thunder and lightning at Royale Jakarta Golf Club. Westwood had a 10-under total in the Asian Tour event.
Malaysia's Shaaban Hussin (67) and South Korea's Park Hyun-Bin (68) were tied for second.

Westwood will reclaim the top spot in the world from Martin Kaymer with a victory if Luke Donald fails to win The Heritage in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Donald also had a one-stroke lead after 36 holes.
