SEVEN TIE FOR LEAD AFTER WINDY DAY AT TEXAS OPEN

FROM THE GOLF.COM WEBSITE
SAN ANTONIO (AP) — US PGA Tour rookie Brendan Steele wrangled the winds and nearly emerged at the Texas Open solely atop the leaderboard.
But on the tour's toughest day in years, no one got off that easy.
Steele carried the lead before double-bogeying on the par-4 15th, then blew a chance to reclaim it by missing a 6-footer for birdie on the final hole, keeping him in a rare seven-way tie atop the leaderboard at 3 under Friday.
That is tied for the second-most crowded leaderboard in the PGA Tour after 36 holes since 1970. Strong winds prevented anyone from breaking out, and Friday's average round of 75.289 was the highest on the tour since the 2008 British Open.
"I got pretty beat up out there," Steele said. "I think we all kind of did."
After missing what would've been his fifth birdie, Steele tapped in No. 18 to finish at par-72. He shared the lead with Geoff Ogilvy (72), Rich Beem (70), Kevin Sutherland (70), Charley Hoffman (73), Brandt Snedeker (72), and Kevin Chappell (73).
A day that began with five-under-par leading the pace was undone by winds that whipped higher than 30 mph. Players helplessly watched tee shots sail into the woods, and just 13 players shot under par Friday after there 50 sub-par scores in the opening round.
Defending champion Adam Scott followed his opening-round 68 with a 74. But on a day like this, 2 over was good enough to leave the Masters runner-up and three others just a stroke back.
"I can't imagine anyone really running away with it," Scott said.
A seven-way tie after 36 holes hasn't been seen on the tour since the 1977 Westchester. The record was an eight-way tie at the 2001 Greater Hartford Open.
"It was blowing when it was dark this morning. It's more like windy Texas days," Ogilvy said. "Happy to get out of it with no damage done and still looking forward to the weekend."
Beem, playing the tour on a major medical extension, had not only a share of the lead but made his first cut since the Houston Open last year. He missed the next six months after undergoing surgery for a bulging disc in his neck.
Beem, whose home in Austin is just north of TPC San Antonio, bogeyed just one hole and finished his final nine shooting par or better.
"This golf course kind of captures your attention," Beem said. "You have to focus on every single hole and every single shot."
The cut was set at 4-over 148, tied for second highest on the tour this season. Among those cut was Kevin Na, who in the windy conditions never stood a chance at overcoming his 16-stroke meltdown on No. 9 in the first round. He finished at 13 over.
<The par-4 ninth also claimed another victim Friday: Richard Johnson, who withdrew after needing nine strokes to get through the hole. He then hopped on his Twitter account and wrote his shoulder was still feeling sore.
"Had a little Kevin Na hole on 9. Made a nice 9," he wrote.
Garth Mulroy also didn't make it through No. 9 - but for an entirely different reason. He was 2 over when he withdrew because his wife went into labour.

LIAM JOHNSTON v DAVID WILSON IN BOYS' 36-HOLE FINAL

FROM THE SGU WEBSITE
Dumfries and County’s Liam Johnston will play Troon Welbeck’s David Wilson in tomorrow’s Scottish boys' championship 36-hole final after both players stormed to victories this afternoon at Dunbar.
Johnston, runner-up in last year’s SGU Boys Order of Merit, proved to be too strong for North Berwick youngster Calum Hill as he racked up an impressive 6 and 5 semi-final win.
Wilson, aiming to becoming the second Troon Welbeck player to win the trophy in the space of four years, overcame the challenge of St Andrews’ Benjamin Kinsley to earn his place in the final with a 3 and 2 victory.
It was Johnston who came out of the blocks quickly in his match, winning the opening two holes with a par and a birdie although a rare mistake at the short third allowed Hill to pull him back to one.
Johnston pulled four holes clear with a par at the fourth and an excellent birdie two at the fifth before Hill hit back with his first birdie of the afternoon at the seventh.
Hill’s challenge came unstuck as a double-bogey at the tenth put Johnston four up again and the Scotland boys' international clinched the match in style with a birdie three at the thirteenth to become the first South golfer to reach the boys final since John Hempstock’s title win at West Kilbride in 2002.
“I didn’t expect to be in the final at the start of the week but I’m happy to be here,” said a delighted Johnston after his round. “My coach Brian Gemmell told me that I had a good enough game to go all the way but also just to go out and enjoy myself.”

“My game plan was to keep the pressure on when I got in front, hit greens and make my opponents work and that’s what I’ve done in both matches today. It was a tougher match than the score suggests and Calum (Hill) has a good future ahead of him with a few more chances in this event,” he added.

Wilson, the Ayrshire boys' match-play champion for the past two years, bogeyed the par five first hole but levelled the match with an excellent two-putt par from long range at the third. He moved to one up when Kinsley found trouble at the sixth and the Troon 16-year-old never looked back from there, producing two more birdies and a run of consistent golf to close out the match with two holes to go.

“I’d been playing really solid golf coming into this week so I expected to do well here at Dunbar. I thought if I could play to my potential I could come good eventually,” admitted Wilson, a one-handicapper. “It would be pretty special to get my name on the trophy as the Scottish Boys Championship is such a big event.

Wilson, a pupil at Marr College, will be aiming to become the second Troon Welbeck player to win the title at Dunbar after Andrew McQueen, who tasted victory on the famous East Lothian links back in 1985.

The final will take place tomorrow over 36 holes with the opening tee-shots at 8.30am and the second round commencing at 1pm. Spectators are encouraged to come along and watch two of Scotland’s finest junior golfers in action.

McILROY AND NOREN SHARE HALFWAY LEAD AT MALAYSIAN OPEN

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Rory McIlroy charged into a share of the second round lead alongside Alex Noren at the Maybank Malaysian Open today - and the Northern Irishman is determined to complete the job this week.
The 21 year old led for 63 holes of last week's Masters Tournament, but came unstuck on the back nine at Augusta National as Charl Schwartzel walked away with the Green Jacket.

"I was in this position last week - leading going into the weekend - and I've led going into a few weekends this year and haven't quite got the win so hopefully this will be the week to get it," said the World Number Nine.

"If I can win then hopefully it will be the springboard to more victories this year."

McIlroy matched Noren's opening eight under par 64 on day two at Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club to join the Swede on 11 under par, while a delay of over two and a half hours because of lightning left half the field unable to complete their second rounds.

They will resume on Saturday morning and the third round will then not commence before 1100 once the cut is made.

The third round will be a two-tee start, looped draw, with the leaders teeing off last from the first tee.

McIlroy's round was highlighted by a string of his trademark pinpoint approach shots, his bogey-free round all the more remarkable considering he has flown halfway across the globe since the Masters Tournament and was unable to practise before his first round after his clubs arrived late.

McIlroy had suggested after his opening 69 that others were more upset about his disappointing final round in Georgia than he was.

And he certainly didn't seem too hung up as he reeled off three birdies in his first four holes after teeing off at the tenth.

He added back-to-back gains at the 16th and 17th, the first from 12 feet, to turn in a five under 31, and three more birdies on the way in completed a bogey-free round.

"I went out and played well," said McIlroy. "I have done for a couple of days but the difference was I holed a couple of putts.

"It feels good - I've got my swing in a nice groove. I feel comfortable shaping it both ways. I've been driving the ball pretty good which you need to around here. It's been really good, I've not missed many shots.

"I'm feeling good. I played well last week and I've continued that on to this week."

Asked whether he needed to prove a point by winning the former Omega Dubai Desert Classic winner added: "It would show more to everyone else other than myself that last week didn't set me back. I've started this week off great but I need to keep going and making birdies and shooting low scores if I want to win.

"Eleven under after two days here is a great effort considering I've travelled so far and not seeing the course. I'm happy with how I played."

Former Omega European Masters champion Noren mixed four birdies with a solitary dropped shot in his three under par effort - the highlight an approach to five feet at the fifth.

Like McIlroy, England's Simon Dyson signed for a 64 which left him one off the pace in the clubhouse.

The top three had opened up a sizeable lead over the rest of the field - Australian Brett Rumford and Scotland's Stephen Gallacher tied for fourth on seven under.

World Number One Martin Kaymer had a one under 71 to be three under at the halfway stage, while on the course golf's newest Major Champion Schwartzel was just inside the projected cutline.

The South African was one under for his round with five left to play to sit alongside Open Champion Louis Oosthuizen on level par.

Italian Matteo Manassero, who turns 18 on Tuesday, was level par for his round with five to play and alongside Australian Scott Barr the best placed of those still on the course - both six under and five off the pace.

SECOND-ROUND SCOREBOARD 133 Rory McIlroy (N Ireland) 69 64, Alexander Noren (Sweden) 64 69.
134 Simon Dyson (England) 70 64.

143 Alastair Forsyth 72 71.

PROJECTED CUT (144 or better to qualify)
153 Ross Bain 77 76.

Following a suspension of play for two hours and 40 minutes in the afternoon due to a lightning storm, none of the afternoon session players completed their rounds. A total of 77 players will resume play at 7.40am tomorrow.
