SCOTT AND NEIL CLEAR FIRST HURDLES AT SCOTTISH BOYS

FROM THE SCOTTISH GOLF UNION WEBSITE
Elderslie’s Alasdair McDougall, a quarter-finalist last year, got off to a flying start at Dunbar this afternoon with an eagle three at the opening hole on his way to a 3 and 2 win over George Burns on day one of the Scottish Boys Championship.
The 16-year-old Castle Head High School pupil clattered the pin with his approach shot to the par five first hole to set the tone for his round, although his younger opponent from Williamwood in Glasgow put up a good battle before McDougall closed out the match at the 16th.
McDougall, who also reached the fourth round of the Scottish Amateur Championship at Gullane last summer, was pleased to progress to the next stage:
“It was nice to get off to such a good start with my eagle at the first and unlike Luke Donald last night the ball stayed on the green after hitting the flag! I’ve played a few practice rounds here at Dunbar and really like the course so hopefully I can keep it going,” he said.
“My short game’s really improved since West Kilbride last year and it’ll have to be sharp this week with the wind being strong. I got a couple of good up and downs at crucial times today however which is good for my confidence and obviously vital for match play.” he added.
Ewan Scott, winner of the recent SGU Junior Tour event at Arbroath, made light work of his opening match with a 5 and 4 win over Glenn Fotheringham (Falkirk Tryst), while fellow 15-year-old Bradley Neil, the reigning Scottish and English Boys under-14s champion, fought hard to win 3 and 2 against Andrew Whyte (St Andrews New).
Peebles youngster Craig Howie, a member of the Scotland boys’ squad, admitted the course was playing very differently to his recent practice at Dunbar after earning a 4 and 2 win in his first round match against Cowglen’s Alan Waugh.
“It was really tough out there especially on the back nine and it was just a question of trying to score one less than your opponent,” said Howie. “The wind really got up and having practiced here in calm conditions it was playing like a totally different golf course. It’s good to get past the first round and I’m looking forward to getting back out on Wednesday morning.”
Greg McLellan (Callander) was the biggest winner of the opening round with a convincing 8 and 6 victory over Milnathort’s Peter Henderson, while Angus Carrick – son of former Scottish Amateur Champion David – powered to a 7 and 5 win against Russell Malcolm.
The Kilmarnock (Barassie) contingent, who with seven players in the Championship had more representation that any other club, got their campaign off to a good start with Callum Gorrie, Euan Walker and Blair Gavin all winning through to the second round.
