UNITED STATES DALLY OVER 2012 RYDER CUP CAPTAINCY

FROM THE DAILY TELEGRAPH WEBSITE
The Americans are taking their time over naming a successor to Corey Pavin as Ryder Cup captain.
No announcement is expected until the New Year, far later than has been the case in recent times.
Pavin was appointed in December two years ago, predecessors Paul Azinger and Tom Lehman in November and before them Hal Sutton, Curtis Strange and Ben Crenshaw were all unveiled only a month after the previous match.
Favourite to do the job at Medinah in Chicago in 2012 is Davis Love, one of Pavin’s assistants in the one-point defeat at Celtic Manor in October.
He said only a few days afterwards: “I definitely want to be a captain. If they (the PGA of America) talk to me about it I’ll be excited about it.
“If the players want me to be the captain then I want it. If I get a sense that they want somebody else, then I wouldn’t do it. That’s what it boils down to.
“If you asked me two months ago I’d have said ‘No, I don’t want to take any chance on screwing up playing’, but now I look at it I don’t want to take any chances on not getting to be the Ryder Cup captain.”
Love admits, though, that the speechmaking side of the role is not something he would relish.

“I’m good at crying when something’s special and I think it would be hard for me to handle the standing-up-in-front-of-people part of it.”
Jose Maria Olazabal is odds-on to take over from Colin Montgomerie, with the European Tour’s tournament committee meeting in Abu Dhabi next month to discuss the position.
The only slight question mark over the 44-year-old Spaniard, it seems, concerns his ongoing fight with rheumatic pains.
He made only one appearance on the European Tour in the first nine months of this year, but has played two more since

FOUR SCOTS SURVIVE TOUR SCHOOL FOUR-ROUND CUT

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Spaniard Alfredo Garcia-Heredia will lead the field into the final two days of the Qualifying School – Final Stage, when the fates of the 67 professionals and three amateurs who made the cut with four-round aggregates of 282 or better will be determined.
Despite dropping three shots in his last two holes on the Stadium Course in Girona, north-east Spain, Garcia-Heredia still tops the leaderboard on 14 under par, one shot clear of Finland’s Mikko Korhonen and England’s Steve Lewton and some 11 shots better than Sweden’s Fredrik Henge, who squeezed under the cut line with nothing to spare after a spectacular finish to his round.
Henge had looked likely to be catching an early flight home after a double bogey at the 15th hole on the Tour course moved him back to level par, but after closing with three successive birdies he is still in with an outside chance of claiming one of at least 30 European Tour cards on offer to the field.
The 70 hopefuls chasing the 30 golden tickets include three amateurs: the English trio of Chris Lloyd, Matthew Nixon and Matthew Southgate.
But it is seasoned professional Garcia-Heredia who leads the pack after carding his fourth sub-par round in a row.
Garcia-Heredia took the 32nd and final card at the 2008 Qualifying School – Final Stage, only to lose his playing privileges after a season of struggle in 2009, but having signed for a round of 69 he already has one foot in The 2011 Race to Dubai.
Thus, despite carding a double bogey at the 17th hole and a bogey at the last the 28 year old, who credits his regular sessions with a sports psychologist for improving his fortunes, was a picture of contentment.
He said: “It was quite hard with the wind blowing in so many directions. You had to be sure which way it was blowing when you had the club in your hand – that was the key. The last two holes were tough. We were playing into the wind on 17 and then downwind on 18, so it was changing at the end and confusing for choosing the right club.
"That’s golf though – sometimes it helps, other times it doesn’t. It hurt a little to finish like that, but it was still a very good day. I’m putting very well and the greens are fantastic, so I’m feeling good and I’m in a great position.”
Korhonen’s flawless round of 66 was the lowest of the day on the Stadium Course – Jamie Elson’s 63 came on the Tour Course – and the Finn has now set his sights on following in the spike marks of last year’s ‘head boy’, Simon Khan of England.
He said: “I’m playing well and had no mistakes today, no bogeys, which is pretty good. I holed a few putts and took advantage of the par fives. I hit almost every fairway and every green, and managed to hole a few putts, so overall I had a good day. The next couple of rounds I’ll just try to be as relaxed as I can and concentrate on getting inside that 30 mark. But my aim is to win it, of course.
“I’m feeling good – not too tired. I have a good caddie, and I do some good exercises every night which keeps me relaxed. I’m not doing much practice on the range because with this much golf you don’t need to – it’s more important to save energy for the rounds.”
Lewton’s round was a more mixed affair, with two bogeys and a double bogey marring an otherwise impressive round of 70.
But after tapping in for his sixth birdie of the day at the final hole, the Englishman remained upbeat about his prospects.
He said: “I played really well, except for the 16th and 17th. I misjudged the wind on 16 and made bogey, and on 17 I hit a poor tee shot which ended on the fairway – but then made double from the middle of the fairway. I missed the green right, which was dead – anywhere left was good – didn’t get it onto the green, then chipped up to three feet and missed the putt.
"But on 18 I hit it to a foot, which was nice. I played really well and was happy with the way I hit it, but just didn’t make any putts.
“I had lots of chances for eagles out there, but couldn’t convert them. I feel like I putted alright but I can’t get it in the hole. I’m just trying to plod along and keep shooting under par every day – that’s the main goal. If I keep doing that, I’ll be happy. The birdie on 18 keeps the momentum going. After going bogey-double it was a big finish, because it changes your mindset. I’m now going to bed happier than I was earlier.”
His compatriot Nixon was also all smiles after following yesterday’s stunning round of 65 on the Stadium Course with an equally impressive 64 on the Tour Course to climb to 12 under par.
The former British boys title winner at Royal Aberdeen said: “I’ve felt weirdly relaxed all week. Coming from amateur golf, I didn’t really know what to expect in terms of the standard. I’ve obviously played with a few pros in the past, but I didn’t really know what sort of standard it would be. I didn’t get my week off to the best of starts, but I’ve slowly managed to claw it back over the past couple of days.
“My last two rounds have been the best of my whole year, so I’ve picked the right time to come good! I wanted to come here and enjoy myself, and so far I’ve definitely managed to do that. I could definitely get used to life on Tour – there’s the Mizuno truck and the Race to Dubai physio unit, although I’ve not had the bottle to go in there yet!
"I felt a bit out of place at the start of the week, but I’ve slowly started to relax and enjoy it more. It’s helped that the weather’s been good for the last couple of days, and the courses are both in great nick.
“I played the Stadium Course really well yesterday, so it doesn’t hold any fears for me, even though it’s probably the harder of the two tracks. But golf’s a funny game – it has a funny habit of reminding you who’s the boss, when you least expect it.
"But I feel in control of the golf ball – if I can control my emotions too, then hopefully I’ll have a good chance of getting my card, which would be a huge bonus.”
Spaniard Carlos Del Moral, who finished in the unenviable position of 21st in the Challenge Tour Rankings, provided one of the highlights of the day with an albatross at the 533yd seventh hole.
He said: “It came at the perfect time for me because I was struggling a little bit. It was a four iron from 208 yards, up the hill. It’s the first time I’ve ever had an albatross and it was awesome. It was up the hill so I couldn’t see that it had gone in. I knew it was on the green and thought it had a chance to be close, but it was a great surprise when I walked onto the green and saw it in the hole.”

SCOTSWATCH: Only four of the 10 Scots in the field survived the 72-hole cut - the Saltman brothers, Lloyd (274) and Elliot (275), Chris Doak (277) and Jack Doherty (279). Eliminated were: former Ryder Cup player Andrew Coltart and Jamie McLeary (both two-under-par 282), Alastair Forsyth (286), Raymond Russell (286), Marc Warren (288) and former PGA Championship winner Scott Drummond (289).

Alastair Forsyth hits 'rock bottom' with early exit

FROM THE SPORT.SCOTSMAN.COM WEBSITE
By NICK RODGER
Alastair Forsyth last night admitted that he has reached rock bottom after the Paisley golfer made an early exit from the European Tour's qualifying school final at PGA Catalunya in north east Spain.
While Lloyd Saltman leads the home challenge in a share of eighth heading into the closing two rounds, Forsyth's wretched season plumbed new depths after a five-over 77 on the Stadium course left him five shots outside the cut mark with a two-over 72-hole tally of 286.
The 34-year-old, pictured, a winner in Malaysia and Madeira on the main circuit, missed 16 cuts from 31 events during a desperate campaign on the European stage in 2010 and is now facing the prospect of life on the second-tier Challenge Tour.
"This is as low as I've been in my career," revealed Forsyth, who suffered a crippling early blow when he racked up a triple-bogey 7 on his third hole. "The last 18 months have been rotten and it becomes very difficult when you are playing week in week out with no sign of improvement. I've worked harder on my game than ever before this year but I just can't find anything. There's no light at the end of the tunnel and my confidence is at rock bottom.

WELSH PAIR WIN PGA PRO-CAPTAIN CHALLENGE

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE PGA
Twelve months after seeing it snatched from his grasp, Welsh pro Richard Dinsdale was celebrating with his club captain Steve Hook after landing the prestigious PGA International Pro-Captain Challenge supported by BMW.

The Pare Golf Academy duo triumphed at Turkey’s Antalya Golf Club to cap an impressive season for Dinsdale who won the Welsh Open PGA Championship and also topped the PGA West Region Order of Merit.
But the ex-PGA Cup player, who was beaten by a shot in the same event 12 months ago, and his captain did it the hard way by overturning a four-shot lead held by rivals Darren Hopwood and Paul Carter from Penwortham Golf Club with five holes to play.
Both pairs started the final round of the 36-hole better-ball event level at five under par, following opening rounds of 66 but a birdie burst before the turn extended Penwortham’s advantage to three strokes.
And when Carter grabbed a net birdie on 12 they looked to have one hand on the trophy but there was a sting in the tale for the Lancashire duo waiting on 14.
Both found bunkers off the tee and by the time Hook got up and down from a bunker for a 4 net 3, Hopwood had double-bogeyed and the lead was cut to one.
Dinsdale then piled on the pressure on 16 with a birdie and when Carter, who again played through the pain barrier, courtesy of metal plates in his knee which will require further surgery in February, bogeyed the same hole the Welsh were one up with two to play and secured victory with a par on the last to sign for a one under 70 to their opponents' 71.
“They were playing so well but I said to Steve just to keep going because it’s such a difficult finish you never know what’s round the corner,” said Dinsdale who picked up a £2,250 winner’s cheque.
“I was hoping it was us turning it on but they had a bit of a bad couple of holes and Steve’s nett birdie on 14 was the killer blow and got us three strokes back on that hole so it was a big moment.”
He added: “I was runner-up last year and determined to go one better and it caps a great season.
“This is the first time I’ve been to Turkey and the PGA Sultan Course was absolutely stunning. There are no let-up holes. At every hole you’ve got to think about your tee shots and second shots – it’s a really difficult golf course, not like a typical modern course which is just a slog with a driver.”
Dinsdale also paid tribute to Hook, a business development manager with Aerospace, who admitted his nerves were jangling over the closing holes.
“His quote as he came off the last was ‘I’m never doing this again’ but he tried so hard and had a couple of moments of brilliance and I’m delighted he’s had his time in the limelight,” said Dinsdale.
Hook, who plays off seven, admitted it had been a memorable experience.
“I’ve won a few club competitions and cups but nothing compares to this,” he said.
“But there was a lot of stress, I’ve never felt pressure like that before. I think it’s because it’s Richard, it’s his job and you want to do well for him.”
Midland club Glen Gorse, represented by pro Dominic Fitzpatrick and Paul Wallace, clinched third place with a 70 to beat Norfolk’s Tony Varney and Iain Phillips by one stroke.
Final results:
1 136 (-6) Richard Dinsdale and Steven Hook (Pare GA) 66 70
2 137 (-5) Darren Hopwood and Paul Carter (Penwortham) 66 71
3 142 (Par) Dominic Fitzpatrick and Paul Wallace (Glen Gorse) 72 70
4 143 (+1) Tony Varney and Iain Phillips (Norfolk) 69 74
5 144 (+2) Patrick Gittens and Pat Comerford (Corrstown) 73 71
6 148 (+6) Stuart Syme and Ian McEwan (Dumfries and Co) 74 74
7= 153 (+11) Peter Rodgers and Murray Cook (Barton on Sea) 77 76,
John Dent and Feride Akkanat (Antalya) 77 76

Thomas, who with Peter Alliss designed The Belfry’s famous Brabazon Course, received a PGA Recognition Award for outstanding service to the game of golf and The Professional Golfers’ Association at a Manchester lunch at the Lowry Hotel.

Joining him at the occasion was his great friend Alliss and representatives from the PGA including chief executive Sandy Jones and PGA North Region secretary Graham Maly.

“Dave Thomas has enjoyed a career in golf spanning seven decades and which has seen him excel both as a player and as a highly respected golf course architect,” said Jones.

Thomas also met and played with some of the game’s greatest players including James Braid, Gene Sarazen and Walter Hagen and rates playing with Ben Hogan in the 1961 US Masters as one of his career highlights.

Others include playing in four Ryder Cups in 1959, ‘63, ’65 and ’67 before arthritis ended his playing career and Thomas immersed himself in his other great passion of golf course architecture.
