Lara wins Austrian Open and saves

his Tour card

FROM THE AOL GOLF NEWS SERVICE
Spain's Jose Manuel Lara won his second European Tour title and saved his tour card after getting the better of England's David Lynn in a play-off at the Austrian Open today.
Lara had missed nine successive cuts before finishing fourth at last week's KLM Open, and the confidence he gleaned from that performance carried him to an emotional triumph in Atzenbrugg.
The 33-year-old surged up the leaderboard from eighth place overnight after recording 10 birdies and two bogeys in his eight-under-par round of 64. That meant he finished tied on 17-under 271 for the tournament with Stoke-based Lynn, who carded 68, as the pair overtook overnight leader Danny Willett who finished with three successive bogeys.
The leading pair both returned to the 18th tee to decide the victor, and Lynn put himself in trouble on the par-four hole by finding rough on the right, behind a grass bank and almost in a bunker. From there could only trundle the ball halfway to the green.
Lara's tee shot was not perfect, finding light rough on the left, but he was able to find the putting surface with his second shot.

Lynn pitched his third shot to around 15 feet, but Lara then putted to four feet. The pressure was on the 37-year-old Englishman and he failed to hole his testing putt, allowing Lara to step forward and find the heart of the hole to take victory with a par.

Willett, the 22-year-old from Yorkshire, had to settle for a share of third place on 14 under par, alongside Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell and Alexander Noren of Sweden.

Lara won his only previous European Tour title outside of Europe, prevailing at the Hong Kong Open in November 2006. He celebrated with his caddie, embraced runner-up Lynn, and was then chased around the green by Champagne-spraying players including his fellow Spaniard Miguel Angel Jimenez.
Lara had plenty of reason to be satisfied, not least the cheque for 125,000 euros (£104,000) which was his reward. He came into the tournament at a lowly 130th in the Race to Dubai, and was in danger of having to go to the qualifying school to earn his card for next season.
Victory solves that problem though, guaranteeing him a place on the tour for 2011.

CHALLENGE TOUR SCOREBOARD

McLeary is caught over final round in Russia

From Challenge Tour Press Officer Paul Symes
Spaniard Carlos del Moral captured his second Challenge Tour title by a single stroke after a stunning closing round of 66 at the M2M Russian Challenge Cup.
The Spaniard fell five strokes behind overnight leader Jamie McLeary after bogeying the third hole at Tseleevo Golf and Polo Club, but blitzed through the field with seven birdies to take the title by one shot from the English duo of Tommy Fleetwood and Matt Ford, and Denmark’s Thorbjørn Olesen.
Ford’s round of 66 was the joint lowest of the day, one shot better than his compatriot Fleetwood, who now has two runner-up finishes to his name in just three Challenge Tour appearances.
Fleetwood, just 19, had a birdie chance from eight feet on the last hole to match playing partner Del Moral’s 11 under par aggregate total, but his firmly-struck putt shaved the hole to leave Olesen – playing in the group behind – as the only man standing between the Spaniard and victory.
The Dane, who now also has two runner-up finishes to his name in his debut season, gave himself every opportunity to force a play-off with an approach to six feet on the 18th hole, but subsequently misread the line of his putt to hand the title to Del Moral. His winner’s cheque for €28,000 moved the 25 year old to 19th place in the Rankings, and within sight of a return to The European Tour.
Del Moral, whose only previous victory came at the 2006 Texbond Open, said: “It’s been the best week of my life. The golf course couldn’t be in better condition or any prettier, and I play one of the best rounds of my life to win. I started off a little shaky – it was quite chilly and also a little windy when we teed off this morning. But then it warmed up a little, and my round caught fire from the fourth hole.
"I told myself after that just to let things happen and not force it, especially with my putts. The greens here are so good, all you need is to give your putts a good roll and there’s a fair chance they’ll go in. I made great putts for birdie on the 12th and 14th holes, then made a huge par putt on the 16th and got up and down on the last to win.
“It’s a great feeling, and luckily I’ve now got a week off to celebrate. I’ve been trying not to think too much about the Rankings, and I’m not going to start now! I’ve got four more tournaments to get my card back, and hopefully I’m good enough.
"These two weeks off now will definitely help, because I’ve been playing the last five weeks straight. But I don’t feel tired – I could go and play another 18 holes, no problem! I’ve worked hard on my fitness recently, and it’s really started paying off. Now it’s party time!”
Fleetwood’s runner-up finish moves the talented teenager up to 55th in the Rankings after just two events as a professional, and guarantees him a category on the Challenge Tour in 2011 and a place in the field for the next event, the ALLIANZ Golf Open du Grand Toulouse.
As he was after his appearance as an amateur at the English Challenge earlier in the season, where a costly bogey on the last handed the title to Daniel Gaunt, Fleetwood was keen to take the positives from a week which saw him enhance his reputation as one to watch in the future.
He said: “I played really well, and hardly put a foot wrong all day. My only bogey was on the 12th, which is probably the hardest hole on the course. I stood on the 14th tee and though I’d need to get to 11 or 12 under to win, and I gave it a good go by holing some clutch putts on the way in. The putt on the last was a bit too firm – I still though it was in, but it just slipped past as it did at the English Challenge.
“But I can still take a lot of positives from the week. I came so close to winning again, and hopefully if I can keep banging on the door, it’ll open sooner or later. Since I’ve turned pro my results have got better with every tournament, so if that trend continues it’s looking pretty good for my next event in Toulouse!
"I’m feeling more and more comfortable all the time, and if I keep giving myself chances, hopefully I’ll be able to take one of them sooner or later. And at least I’ve now secured a Challenge Tour category for next season, so I’ll have somewhere to play if I don’t make it through Q School.”
Fellow Englishman Ford has also secured his playing privileges for next season’s Challenge Tour after moving up to 53rd in the Rankings. Ford flew out of the blocks with an outbound nine of 33, and came home in the same score to record the highest finish of his Challenge Tour career.
Olesen, in contrast, was disappointed to have missed out on a second title of the season, but could console himself with a cheque for €18,000 which moved him up to third place in the Rankings.
After a bright start McLeary’s round unravelled with four bogeys in seven holes from the sixth, and despite a late rally he was unable to finish any higher than fifth.

The Wonder of Wolstenholme: Winner of second senior event

From Michael Gibbons, European Tour Press Office
Gary Wolstenholme completed a brilliant wire-to-wire victory at the Casa Serena Open to secure his golfing future in just his second start on the European Senior Tour.
The 50-year-old Englishman, picured by Cal Carson Golf Agency, took home the €90,000 first prize on offer at Casa Serena Golf in the Czech Republic after a commanding final round performance that saw him post a four-under-par 67 for a winning total of 13 under 201 and a three-stroke victory over Scotland’s Gordon Brand junior
Wolstenholme, who enjoyed a glittering amateur career before turning professional at the age of 48, has now secured his playing rights for the next two years on the Senior Tour.
“It’s a dream come true to have done what I have in the space of two events,” said Wolstenholme as he cradled his trophy and the biggest pay cheque of his career.
“To come out of the blocks so quickly is extraordinary and I will tell you right now that I did a lot of praying on this one! I didn’t really know what to expect today and I knew that Gordon in particular would really come at me because he is a fierce competitor.
“I just did what I always do – I am a bit of a grinder, a bit of a golfing Steve Davis in the sense that it is never really spectacular but I get the job done.
“This win will open a lot of doors for me, I hope, but I just want to start taking it all in because it means so much. I know my mum back home will be jumping for joy and this is for her more than anyone.
“The money makes things a lot easier as well and winning will hopefully allow me to fulfil the rest of my golfing ambitions because there is still so much that I want to do in the game.”
Wolstenholme performed brilliantly throughout the week at Casa Serena Golf and held off strong challenges from both Brand Jnr and third-placed Mark Belsham of England.
It was Belsham who applied the early final round pressure with two front nine birdies but Wolstenholme stood strong before Belsham dropped out of the battle on the back nine. Cue Brand Jnr, a man of vast experience and a 2010 Senior Tour winner, but again Wolstenholme withstood the challenge to complete a well deserved win.
While Wolstenholme celebrated his maiden Senior victory, Brand Jnr and Belsham of England also left the Czech Republic in good spirits, with the Scot climbing to sixth place on the Order of Merit and Belsham moving to 32nd and securing his card for 2011 in the process.
Wolstenholme’s 13th place on the Order of Merit, with earnings of €109,181, is a phenomenal achievement in two events and is the clearest indication that the Englishman’s first Senior Tour win will not be his last.
If Gary's father Guy, a successful tour pro in his day, were still alive, he would me mighty proud of the chip off the old block.

UP FOR THE CUP! Newmachar's winning quartet in the Northern Counties Cup - (left to right) Chris Simpson, Mark McKechnic, John Duff and Richard Barr (Image by Robin Wilson).
Newmachar win Northern Counties Cup at Royal Dornoch

By ROBIN WILSON
Newmachar Golf Club, relative newcomers to the Northern Counties Cup and only once previous winners since the club's formation in 1990, won for a second time at Royal Dornoch on Saturday, beating eleven times previous winners and holders, Nairn, in the final by two holes.

Newmachar's winning team 13 years ago at Peterhead was Craig Thomson, Alister Crombie, Jim Hardie and John Cramond and at Dornoch the cup and gold medals were won by Chris Simpson (38), Mark McKechnic (27), John Duff (21) and Richard Barr (33).

Barr nearly missed playing after he was struck on the back of his head by a golf ball driven from the eighth tee during Wednesday's practice rounds which left him nursing a sore bump for the rest of the week. But it did not prevent him playing his part in a final, where Nairn, the favourites, did not produce the form of their earlier rounds which had seen them put out three former winners in defence of the cup.

In the double foursomes match-play format, that has stood the test of time since the first competition in 1900 at Royal Aberdeen, Nairn have won on the competition's last two visits to Royal Dornoch and by reaching the final once again with a semi final win over the Inverness second team they were firmly lodged as favourites to continue their Dornoch run.

Newmachar's first couple Simpson and McKechnic made a birdie from 9 feet on the final green to sink Moray in the semi final and produced the same type of form in the final.
At a crucial stage they birdied the 12th, won the 14th with par, then birdied 15th to go from two behind against Nairn's Fraser Fotheringham and Steven MacDonald to one ahead.
Then, at the 17th hole, the Newmachar pair, after being bunkered from the tee, got down in two from 140 yards to win the hole and go two ahead after Fotheringham, from MacDonald's drive, was unable to find the green from a horrid lie in the rough.
In the game following between the Duff/Barr partnership against the formidable Neil Hampton and Robert Smith, who were attempting to win their fifth individual gold medal with Nairn, the Newmachar couple were always in front due to some slack play from their opponents.
Duff and Barr turned two in front but, bunkered at the 11th, were cut back to one up and still fighting. Hampton holed a valuable par putt on the14th green to level and increase the pressure on their less experienced opponents.
Then it was the fully recovered Barr who found the cup. His approach to the 17th pin was an almost conceded birdie and the holed putt put the second pair one up and a team aggregate three holes ahead with only the 18th hole remaining to play.
Simpson and McKechnic lost the final hole for the final result of two holes up for Newmachar.
Semi finalists Moray can look forward to next year when the event visits their Lossiemouth links in September.

Taipei, September 19:Thailand’s Thaworn Wiratchant was declared the winner of the inaugural Yeangder Tournament Players Championship (TPC) after it was reduced to a 54-stroke play tournament due to Typhoon Fanapi which hit Taipei on Sunday.
With the dangerous storm packing winds of up to 162 kilometres per hour, play for the final round at the Linkou International Golf Club was unplayable and officials had no choice but to shorten the inaugural event to three rounds.
“The threat of Typhoon Fanapi today was a very serious one and it would be very dangerous if we allowed play to continue. We had no choice but to cancel the final round and reduce the tournament to 54 holes,” said Wanchai Meechai, Asian Tour’s Tournament Director for the Yeangder TPC.
The Yeangder TPC is the second event on the Asian Tour Schedule to be reduced to 54-holes after the Ballantine’s Championship in Korea this season.
Thaworn now holds the joint record of 12 Asian Tour victories alongside compatriot and reigning Order of Merit winner Thongchai Jaidee after winning the US$300,000 full field Asian Tour event.
The 43-year-old posted a two-under-par 70 to take the third round lead and win his 12th Asian Tour title with a three-day total of 10-under-par 206.
“I’m happy to have won my 12th Asian Tour title this week. It does not really matter whether I won it after 54 or 72 holes. As long as I did it, I’m happy,” said Thaworn.
“Now that I’ve won my 12th title, I’m looking forward to extending my winning record on the Asian Tour,” added the Thai.
Compatriot Chinnarat Phadungsil carded rounds of 70,70 and 67 to take second place on 207 while Malaysia’s Iain Steel took third place with his three day scores of 68,69 and 71.
Australia’s David Gleeson and American Ben Fix took a share of fourth place on 209 total.
