Ireland Power to Senior Homes Hat-trick at Crail

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE IRISH GOLF UNION
A rampant Ireland Seniors team made it a record three Home Internationals titles in a row with an emphatic 7.5 – 1.5 win over Scotland today on the Craighead course at Crail.
The Irish maintained their 100% record for the week to record a ‘triple crown’ and with it clinched their third successive title as the host nation Scotland were eft to pick up the wooden spoon.
Victory was all but confirmed by Barry Doyle’s side – runners up to England at the recent European Senior Team Championship – as they powered to a three nil morning foursomes lead, before wins in the top three games for Maurice Kelly, Garth McGimpsey and Adrian Morrow sealed a glorious week in the East Neuk for the Irish.
Tom Cleary added to the margin of victory with a 2 and 1 win over Colin Christy, while John McDonald bagged Scotland’s only point of the day with a hard fought one hole win over Billy Donlon. In the final match, Ireland’s Michael Quirke missed out on his own 100% record with a half against Ian Taylor.
McGimpsey shone on his Seniors Home Internationals debut with six points out of six and the former Walker Cup player and captain was delighted with his team’s performance:
“I’m absolutely thrilled. It’s been a great week for me and the team. We’ve performed really well from start to finish and to make it three in a row is fantastic. The team spirit has been excellent and the captain mixed it up well. I hadn’t been playing much competitive golf in recent years so it’s nice to make such a big impact on the seniors’ scene.”
“I thoroughly enjoyed the course and the more we played it the better it became. The wind obviously played a huge part in the challenge but its set up great for match play and a good test of golf. I put myself under a bit of pressure to win the last match and David (Gardner) gave me a great game, so it was nice to finish with six points and the trophy for the team.” added the 55-year-old.
European champions England finished in second spot with a 5.5 – 3.5 victory over Wales, with comprehensive wins for Alan Squires, Doug Arnold and the veteran Roy Smethurst in the singles seeing them edge past the Welsh after the morning foursomes finished all square.
Ian Dickson, Club Captain of the host club Crail Golfing Society, said:
“We are delighted that our investment in the club over the past few years has played its part in the success of the tournament. We have forged close bonds with the SGU and look forward to working with them again in the future.
“Tribute must go to course architect Gil Hanse who designed the Craighead course, which has presented a wonderful challenge to the teams this week. Gil has gone on to co-design Castle Stuart to great acclaim and we are delighted with our association with him.”

Top prize was a cheque for £1000 and a Skycaddie SGX.

Stirling University golf post for Dean Robertson

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE PGA
Former European Tour Pro Dean Robertson believes his old team-mate Colin Montgomerie has a welcome selection headache when the Ryder Cup gets underway in Wales.
Robertson, who partnered Montgomerie at the 1999 World Cup, has plenty of selection experience himself, having been Head Coach of the European Palmer Cup team - student golf's equivalent of the Ryder Cup - for the past two years.
And the Paisley-born player, who has just been appointed as the High Performance Golf coach at the University of Stirling, reckons European captain Monty might actually have an easier task than him.
"Monty has the luxury of dropping people whereas in the Palmer Cup, the team consists of only eight players so you can't drop anyone or chop and change between the foursomes, fourballs and singles," said Robertson.
"Europe has a plethora of options and I am pretty sure he will play everyone at least once on the first day. The biggest challenge he is going to have is his lynchpin player; Lee Westwood is carrying an injury. So while in the past, he has been asked to play a full series of matches, I just can't see him playing them all."
Robertson, 40, enjoyed a glittering amateur career which included competing in the Eisenhower Trophy and Walker Cup before 10 years on the European Tour, where he won the 1999 Italian Open and recorded successive top 100 Order of Merit finishes.
He has since moved into Performance Coaching and occupies the role of Head Coach for the Scottish Junior Golf Tour (SJGT) and Lothians while also working closely with the English Golf Union, Swedish Golf Federation and coaching across the South of Scotland.
In his new position at Stirling, Scotland's University for Sporting Excellence, Robertson hopes to shape the nation's best young players - without need for them to move to the USA as he did.
Robertson added: "Golf is a game to be learned - not a subject to be taught - and Stirling is the perfect learning environment. It's got brilliant facilities, the stunning backdrop of the Ochil hills and an excellent reputation, having supported players like Richie Ramsay and Catriona Matthew.
"The main difference between here and the USA for a golf scholarship is the coaches. Without being disrespectful, most of the coaches in the States are team managers whose role is to organise events; most are not experienced coaches with a pedigree in playing top-level golf.
"It's now up to me to take the Stirling programme up another notch and hopefully the talented young players here can tap into my experiences of playing at the highest level."
The University's men's team are the current British Universities strokeplay and matchplay team champions. Last week, a five-man team of Bobby Rushford, Alexander Culverwell, David Booth, Jack Macdonald and Graeme Robertson were crowned the 2010 International Collegiate Invitational team champions, surging to a 12-shot victory at Fairmont, St Andrews.
As the scholars return to their studies this week, Robertson is more than ready to help them improve even further. "For the commitment they show me, I will meet them head-to-head. Growing up, my whole life was given to the game of golf, but they should think themselves fortunate they don't have to stare at the bottom of a swimming pool for 20 hours a week - they get to combine developing in the sport they love with a University degree."
University of Stirling Sports Performance Manager Raleigh Gowrie welcomed the new addition to the International Sports Scholarship Programme.
He said: "Dean holds impressive playing records in both amateur and professional golf and is fast developing an excellent reputation as an innovative coach with fresh ideas to help develop players' games. I'm sure he will add value to our very successful golf scholarship programme operating at Scotland's University for Sporting Excellence."

Ryder Cup Director Richard Hills said: “We are truly honoured that The Prince of Wales is to visit The Celtic Manor Resort during the week of The Ryder Cup. Xltec PRO GOLF TOUR AT THE ROXBURGHE

October 11-12

FROM CHRIS TURNER
We are now accepting entries for the final Xltec Pro Golf Tour event for 2010. This will take place at The Roxburghe in the Scottish Borders on Monday 11th and Tuesday 12th October.
Given the venue and the time of year, play will begin at 10.30am on both days.
As we had to cancel the last event at Mar Hall due to low entries and late withdrawals , we have put a closing date on The Roxburghe at midday on Friday 1st October.
This will allow The Roxburghe to release the tee times back to their business should we not receive enough entries. There will be absolutely no late entries accepted after 12 noon on the 1st October as we have an obligation that day to give to The Roxburghe, as to whether the event will be going ahead or not.
I do hope to see you there and we can finish off the season with one more successful event.
Please contact me should you wish to enter.

WALLACE BOOTH TO THE FORE AT DUNDONALD

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
The opening round of the First Qualifying Stage – Section C finally got completed after the weather delays of the first day with Scot Wallace Booth leading the way at Dundonald Links.
Booth, who turned professional during the 2009 Alfred Dunhill Championship, is making his first appearance since recovering from a shoulder injury that has limited his play this year and shot a two over par 74 in strong winds to lead by one from fellow Scot Chris Kelly and English Amateur Billy Hemstock.

Play had been disrupted in Scotland throughout the morning with play only getting underway at midday when the wind had dropped from gusts of 40mph to a more manageable 17 mph average, but still with gusts of 22mph. Birdies at the seventh and 11th helped take Booth into the lead.

The weather was similarly disruptive at Fleesensee in Germany with round two suspended at 19.20 due to darkness with a restart at 8am on Thursday after the heavy rain on day one and overnight had delayed proceedings.

When round one was finally completed, four players shared the lead on four under par 68. Home favourite Max Glauert of Germany was among them, along with Jerome Theunis of Belgium, Ben Jones of England and Canadian Matthew Bliss.
