Blow to Westwood, calf injury puts him out for weeks

Lee Westwood has pulled out of the remainder of the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and next week's USPGA Championship because of a badly swollen right calf.
The world No 3 has been hampered by the injury since before the start of last month's French Open.

"I will be out for as long as it takes to get better," Westwood said after carding a six-over-par 76 in the second round at Firestone Country Club.

"I am just hoping that it will be in time for me to play in the Ryder Cup."

Westwood has played in six consecutive editions of the biennial Europe v United States event, which takes place this year at Celtic Manor in Wales from 1-3 October.

He ruptured the plantaris muscle in his right calf at the French Open but managed to be fit enough to play in the Open at St Andrews, where he finished a distant but creditable second behind Louis Oosthuizen.

Westwood, 37, went into the World Golf Championship series tournament in Ohio with a chance of supplanting Tiger Woods as world number one.

He shot a one over par first-round 71 in Ohio to be seven shots off leader Bubba Watson, and his 76 on Friday left him well out of contention.

Afterwards he said of his injury: "It just seems to be getting worse.

"There's no strength in [the leg]. I don't have a deal of confidence in it, and then on the way down [in his swing] I'm finding it hard to hold my weight on it and then push off."
Asked what else he could do to aid his ankle's recovery, he replied: "Sit on my backside for six weeks like they keep telling me.
"It's the only way to improve it. I'd like to be working out but I can't put any weight on it in the gym, so my legs feel weak."
The USPGA Championship tees off on Thursday 12 August, at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wisconsin.

SCOTT HENRY PIPPED IN EUROPRO TOUR

 PLAY-OFF BUT POCKETS £5,000

NICK McCarthy has claimed his first victory on the PGA EuroPro Tour after edging out Scott Henry in the second extra hole of a play-off.
McCarthy (Moortown) and Henry (The Carrick on Loch Lomond ) had both finished on ten-under after three rounds at the Formby Hall Classic in Merseyside.
But McCarthy triumphed to collect the £10,000 winner’s prize and move a step closer to advancing to the Challenge Tour.
“I’m a bit shocked and don’t know what to do but it just feels fantastic,” said 22-year-old McCarthy.
“I had a game plan for the week, stuck to it and that got me through.
“I came up here a few days before the tournament and had played Formby Hall last year so knew there were holes when you could attack and holes you had to settle for par.
“At the beginning of the year I had a target to be in the top five and this has just boosted me and brought me closer.
“There are four tournaments left and then the Tour Championships so I’m hoping for a good finish to the season.
“I’ve won £13,000 from the Tour so far this year and if I can get it to £20,000 that should be enough.”
Leeds-based McCarthy has played on the Tour since April 2009 and hopes to follow in the footsteps of former members Louis Oosthuizen and Ross Fisher, who recently won the Open and the Irish Open respectively.
McCarthy’s previous best finish came in August 2009 when he came tied fourth at Wychwood Park in Cheshire, although he had threatened to beat that earlier this campaign.
He had led going into the final day at Longhirst Hall, Northumberland but eventually finished sixth before he finished in the same position a week later at Bovey Castle , Devon .
“It makes a big difference moving from amateur golf to the EuroPro Tour and on the Tour you learn how to shoot low numbers,” added McCarthy.
“A couple of times in the past I have been in contention but not been able to finish it off.
“But winning this gives me a lot of confidence and then you look at the big names who have played on the Tour. You think if they can do it then why can’t I?”
Henry, who had a stellar career in Scotland as an amateur but whose pro career has hardly got him out of the starting blocks, picks up £5,000 for his second place, while Order of Merit leader Daniel Gaunt has extended his lead at the top of the money list after he came third.
Matt Allen finished fourth with four players – Matthew Baldwin (Royal Birkdale), Ian Keenan (Royal Liverpool), Graeme Clark (Doncaster GC) and Steve Uzzell (Hornsea GC) - all in tied fifth place.

BANCHORY MAKE BYRNE AN HONORARY MEMBER

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Banchory have made James Byrne , Scotland ’s highest world ranked amateur golfer, an honorary member at the age of 21.
Club captain Rod Dallas explained that it was for James' outstanding achievements in amateur golf and for being such a fine young man and a credit to the Banchory Golf Club.
Byrne, a student at Arizona State University and currently playing in the European individual amateur championship in Finland , said by E-mail:
“It is perhaps uncommon for a 21 year old to be presented with an honorary membership, so to receive such an award at this stage in my career is a great honour. The Banchory Golf Club members have always been extremely supportive of me and I consider myself lucky to have grown up playing golf with the support and encouragement of so many people.
“The ceremony last week was well attended and I received an amazing reception from those present. As I mentioned that night, I am very thankful for the support of the Banchory membership and I hope to be a good ambassador for the club both now and in the future.”
Banchory Golf Club's list of honorary members of note includes Paul Lawrie and Harry Bannerman, both Ryder Cup players, Greig Hutcheon and Bruce Davidson for his continuing efforts in the Grampian Houston Trips for youngsters. Greig and Bruce were both junior members of the club.

252 PLAYERS FROM 20 COUNTRIES READY TO CONTEST

 BOYS' AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP IN AYRSHIRE

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE RandA
A total of 252 of the world’s best players, aged 18 or under, are arriving on the west coast of Scotland ahead of the 2010 Boys Amateur Championship, which begins next Tuesday 10 August at Kilmarnock (Barassie) and Dundonald Links. 20 nations, including Israel, Hungary, Nigeria, Korea and New Zealand, will be represented at the six-day event.
In the field is Italian Domenico Geminiani, who, in May, became the youngest player ever to compete in a European Tour event, at the BMW Italian Open. The Florida-based 14-year-old plays off a handicap of +3.6.
2010 Scottish Boys Champion Grant Forrest leads a strong home contingent of 47 players, including Barassie member Jack McDonald, who are attempting to become the first Scot to win the title on home soil since Steven O’Hara won at Ladybank in 1998.
“Barassie is a course where it’s important to have local knowledge,” explained McDonald. “I’ve played at Barassie loads of times and I’ve played Dundonald a lot, too, so that will be an advantage at the Boys Amateur. I’m feeling pretty confident going into it.”
In a change to the event, the Boys Amateur will now mirror the format of the Amateur Championship. 36 holes of stroke play qualifying will be played over two days, 18 holes at both Kilmarnock and Dundonald, before four days of match play take place solely at Barassie.
Kilmarnock (Barassie) started its association with R and A championships in 1948, when it welcomed the Boys Amateur for the first time. Since then, it has staged five Boys Home Internationals, two Jacques Leglise Trophy matches, stroke play qualifying for the 2001 Amateur Championship, and a further four Boys Amateurs, two of which were won by Howard Clark and Ronan Rafferty in 1971 and 1979, respectively.
It has also acted as a final qualifying venue when The Open has been staged at Royal Troon or Turnberry.
Despite only having opened for play in 2003, Dundonald has already hosted the Duke of York Young Champions Trophy event, as well as qualifying for The Senior Open Championship and a stage of European Tour Qualifying School. The Boys Amateur, past winners of which include Sir Michael Bonallack, Jose Maria Olazabal, Sergio Garcia and Rhys Davies, is the first R&A Championship to be hosted by Dundonald.
The 2010 Boys Amateur Championship begins on Tuesday 10 August, with the 36-hole final taking place the following Sunday. The winner will receive an exemption into the 2011 Amateur Championship, which will be held at Hillside and Hesketh.
The full list of competitors can be found on RandA.org.
Scores and stories will appear on RandA.org throughout the competition.
